DEEP PURPLE Frontman IAN GILLAN: 'Gillan's In' Details Revealed - Mar. 8, 2006
The complete track listing has been released for DEEP PURPLE frontman Ian Gillan's upcoming album "Gillan's Inn" — a celebration of Ian's 40th year on the road, featuring remakes of tracks spanning Ian's entire career.

As previously reported, "Gillan's Inn" will be made available on the new DualDisc format; regular stereo CD on one side, DVD on the other. Gillan has used this to allow listeners to choose from four different guitar solos on the remake of "Smoke on the Water".

In a recent interview with Rockdetector.com, Gillan spoke about the "Smoke on the Water" remake that appears on the upcoming CD: "'Smoke on the Water' is a big, big part of my history and a big part of why I'm here and able to do what I do," he said. "I couldn't really ignore that, but at the same time, you have to recognize that a lot of those songs, [like] 'Smoke…', 'Child In Time', 'Highway Star', etc. are snapshots in time and cannot be improved. They are what they are. It would be foolish to try and recapture that magic, because you can't. So, what I did with 'Smoke on the Water' was to treat it respectfully, it's a fairly regular version, but use it as a showcase for some of the guitarists to work with. On there you have Jeff Healey, Steve Morse, Joe Satriani… The talent there is incredible."

Among the other guest musicians slated to appear on the record are BLACK SABBATH guitarist Tony Iommi, fellow DEEP PURPLE members Ian Paice (drums) and Roger Glover (bass), Jon Lord, Don Airey, Joe Satriani, Jeff Healey, Janick Gers, Michael Lee, Johnny Rzeznik, Robby Takac and Redd Volkeart.

Gillans voice has been in steady decline for years, yes he's a legend, yes I'm a fan but I won't be buying this. I'll stick to the originals thanks.

I would like to see the videos of Ian fronting Black Sabbath......

Although I agree with what Ian said himself, that he was not a good fit,
I personally enjoy the album he did with Sabbath a lot.......

Gee, imagine that, a guy with one of the widest vocal ranges in rock history's voice isn't quite what it used to be after 40 years. The man still sounds a hell of a lot better than most rock singers. this will be an instant purchase for me.

This will be a pretty cool buy! With all the digiatl Mastering, I'm sure they can make Ian's voice sound good enough! His voice is close to done, BUT he was great! Born Again killed his voice, Disturbing the Priest, but Child in Time didn't help either, though when in his prime that song is AWESOME!

Plus the BEST vocalist EVER ronnie James Dio is on the cd, worth it right there!

When I hear the recent performances of frontmen I grew up idolizing a small part of me dies -

Geoff Tate - no more high notes, cotton wool in his mouth
David Coverdale - now sings in a bizzare high squawk
Rob Halford - Never holds notes, high range shot. Painkiller is now painful.
Eric Adams - makes crowd sing the high bits
Brain Johnson - looks like he's about to die every time he wheezes a note out
Gillan - Can't sing Child in Time.

Yeah I'm sure I'll get bashed for this post but I'm not bashing these guys, they are all favourite singers of mine but I would rather listen to them in their prime belting it out than on some new DVD no matter how high a resolution its got.

Dickinson and Dio have interestingly both adapted the same vocal techniques in recent years to save their voices by eliminating any throaty growls and singing smoothly, hence their continuing high standards.

fucking heavy song with an evil vibe and an equally fucked up video. Born again is right up there with mob rules and heaven and hell.

No of course I don't think singers should retire after their peak. To be fair many singers adapt their failing voices in order to sing older numbers, in many cases very effectively (Geoff Tate is prettty good at this).

However I believe that they should be made to take a test (devised by me) to determine how well they sing compared to earlier in their career.

If they fail they will be shot with a gun with a barrel in the shape of a singing mouth. Ironic eh?

I agree with you man. I love Priest and Halford can still wail away on the recent studio stuff but in concert it's a whole other story. Dickinson and Dio are still killer in concert, Ian Gillan is perhaps better now then 10 years ago but just don't do Child in Time. Coverdale does sound kinda funny on the new Wsnake DVD and the phelm in his throat doesnt help either. Another amazing vocalist who still has it live is TOny Harnell. This guy is like Dickinson, just gets better with age.

Gillan is still the best hard Rock singer on the planet, if you are slagging him you have not seen him live lately. He is still dead on, sure the screams are not always there for him now but if anything his non-falsetto voice is deeper and richer. Gillan is a god among insects. I cannot wait to hear the tracks with Uli Roth, Ive always felt that Deep Purple shouldve replaced Blackmore with Roth instead of Morse who is more of a blues/southern rock player than a progressive european style player.

Cant wait for this album to hit the market.

just look at it this way, look how long he's been singing and how old he is his voice is still amazing. i wish i had half the talent this man has. i just wish all the old metal singers still had the range he has have you listened to Brian Johnson"s voice lately he sound"s like Gonzo from the muppets "hey Kermit I'm thunderstrucked" now don't get me wrong, i like ac/dc just saying his voice is shot. We have to be happy they are still out there putting on a good show because when there done and gone what are we left with avenged sevenfold etc. the nu metal scene sucks so just be happy there still out there.
