SOUNDSCAN Report: SEPULTURA, BLACK SABBATH, DARKTHRONE

SEPULTURA's latest album, "Dante XXI", has sold just under 2,300 copies during its first week of release in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. This figure is a bit more than half the 4,000+ first-week sales tally of the group's last CD, "Roorback", and significantly lower than the 10,000+ first-week number recorded by 2001's "Nation" (the band's 1998 effort, "Against", sold 18,000+ copies in its first week of release).
The following are some of the other notable heavy metal/hard rock U.S. sales debuts for the week ending March 19, 2006, as reported by Nielsen SoundScan (All figures are rounded to the nearest thousand, except numbers under 2,000, which are rounded to the nearest hundred; The Billboard 200 chart position included, where applicable):
JOE SATRIANI - "Super Colossal": 12,000 (#86)
BLACK SABBATH - "Greatest Hits 1970-78": 11,000 (#96)
DARKTHRONE - "The Cult Is Alive": 400

for an awesome album like Dante, thats really sad. I havent had a chance to pick it up, but Ive heard the thing already, its easily one of my favorite albums of all time

wow, that is a little dissapointing for Sepultura. Especially considering just how good the new album really is. I think it may have something to do with the fact that sepultura hasnt toured the states properly since 2001. they only did 20 or so shows in n. america for revolusongs. I've been incredibly happy with dante xxi, i'd recommend anyone to buy it. the cd is in a nice package with the booklet too, its really worth owning.

It's the nature of the beast. Sucks, but it's true. Look at what happned to bands like Warrant & Ratt. They're playing pizza parlors and BarMitzvahs now. It's the fucking knuckleheads that are downloading the music for free and not supporting the bands by buying their music (Sorry for the Lars-like rant). It's cool to download a couple of tunes to see if you like it and then go buy the disc. This is how you support your favorite bands so they can still be around for your kids....Heaven forbid some of you are breeding. The plus side to declining sales is you get to see bands in smaller venues.

They don't need huge sales to be good. They themselves wouldn't want to sell tons and tons of records. After all these years, I commend Darkthrone for still remaining true to what Black Metal is all about.

Most metalhead don't buy their music from Best Buy and Hot Topic where Soundscan is used... most of us by our music through mailorder and indie stores, which do not use Soundscan.
These figures don't mean shit.

For being one of the few people on here who understand how it fucking works. How many mall stores carry Dark Throne cds? How many people actually go to the mall stores to purchase Dark Throne cds? That's how Soundscan works, at those larger retailers who participate in the system. If this cd sold 3000 copies in the U.S. through smaller shops and mail-order, it wouldn't be reflected in Soundscan numbers accurately.

1.Staind dropping off the map.
-There singles are still regulars on rock radio and their latest went Gold so they are not as popular as they were but they have not dropped off the map.
2.Darkthrone would not want to sell that many records.
-Black Metal fans have the best excuses for poor record sales. This one is unfortunate though because Darkthrone is a great band.
3. Satriani.
Congrats!!! From what I saw he had very little commercail support but still did good!

Caught a rare live/in-store deally last week. New tunes sound great and Joe's a great guy as well as the best rock/metal guitar player out there. Vai is awesome. Between them, they fill the gap that the late GREAT Randy Rhoads left. But Yngwie can suck a dick. Just can't stand him. Too many meaningless notes. Plays for the sake of the note not the feel. Joe and Steve just seem to grasp melodic texture like very few others.

I read a lot of your reviews in treehouse of death (great site by the way!) And I completely agree with you on this. I haven't heard this Darkthrone yet. But I love ALL of their CD's so there is no doubt I will buy this before hearing it, as I am an anal completist with some bands. So do you think BEST BUY carries this bitch? ha ha. All of our Indie CD stores have gone bye bye. So I can't support any local people only the corporate giants or online sales.

Bands of all sizes make the bulk of their money on the road. Album sales account for little revenue for the band. It all goes to the label and all of the lawyers and managers involved.
So if they dont sell any albums the label cant/wont give them any tour support (cash to hit the road). But if you dont tour, you wont sell any albums... so its a pretty nasty cycle that has ended many bands.

I heard it. It's very boring, soul less, and the only good tracks of it are the thrash ones (i think 2 of the full album?) So what's the big deal? In fact, Soulfly stills get considerated like a nu-metal band but is light years above the shit that Sepultura is puttin out through the time.
Sad but true.

Sepultura's new album is the best they released since Arise (and is 10x's better than anything Max "Jump da fuck up" Cavallera has done the past 10 years).
And the new Darkthrone is a top album of the year contender.

Probably didn't sell shit because they're pressing plant went out of business and only so many were printed. This isn't an effort to be kvlt or anything though, because contrary to the press that their semi-moron low-standard hack metal fans believe, Dorkthrone is one of the trendiest bands in metal. I am sure they moved a couple thousand through distros, but if you can't find a copy, simply plug your shittiest guitar into your cheapest amp and play the first 3 riffs you ever wrote when you were 13 while someone hits a radiator with a fork in the next room to get the same result. Then shoot yourself.

DANTE XXI is a excellent album, is a different idea, is heavy, fast and dirty. The lyrics are dark, is a great work for the band. Sepultura is fuckin'all in Europe tour. When Sepultura comes to US.
