Report: Reflections On Heavy Metal Fashion
- Mar. 24, 2006
|
|
The Canadian, Canada's new socially progressive and cross-cultural national newspaper, has published an article on "heavy metal fashion" — described as "the style of dress, body modification, make-up, hairstyle, and so on, affected by many fans of heavy metal, or, as they are often called, metalheads." The article continues: "To those with informed heavy metal fashion sensibilities, and with particular reference to those people within the metal subculture, relatively subtle differences in clothing can speak volumes about a person's tastes and, more critically, show whether or not they are a 'poseur.' "Origins: The clothing associated with heavy metal has its roots firmly ensconced within the clothing adopted by biker culture, and even earlier the clothing commonly worn by the rockers of the sixties. The bikers legacy to the modern metalhead is their affinity for leather jackets, heavy boots (often work boots or combat boots, distinct from the long steel-toed boots worn by skinheads or the ornate footwear favoured by goths), jeans and denim jackets or waistcoats, often adorned with badges and patches and a peculiar fascination with the imagery of Nazi Germany, often to shock (It must be noted that the swastika is normally avoided: the iron cross however, is particularly popular. See MOTÖRHEAD). However, the iron cross could also be traced back to the Crusades-era middle ages, a symbol of the Knights Templar. Metalheads have also been known to wear military clothing like field jackets and bits of camouflage uniforms like shirts and/or trousers to wear alongside their black T-shirts and black combat boots." You can't be metal without a goatee!
"A goatee is a beard formed by a tuft of hair on the chin resembling that of a billy goat. The goatee underwent a renaissance in the 1990s, when a close-cropped variant with an integrated moustache was popularized by the musicians. In satirical fiction, the goatee is often a symbol of a character's evil twin. This may be due to historical portrayals of the devil."

"There is a strong stigma against bands who wear their own T-shirts"
WTF? Except Bruce and Adrian everyother band members wear Maiden t-shirts. I've never seen a live show where Dave and Janick are not wearing Maiden t-shirts.
The article looks like a question answer in an exam or something:
'Discuss the dress trends commonly found among the clan of metal music fans with elaborating their origin.'
All I do that can be seen as metal dressup is wearing my Iron Maiden/sepultura t shirts sometimes. According to this article we are supposed to wear these all the time. What a dumb ass. Fuck off..
anyway check this out.....

--Power Metal fans and bands have also adopted a variation on the long haired style that involves hair even longer than the metal norm, often curled -- so they have perms? heh.
and they are dead fucking wrong about dreadlocks. Dreadlocks are not metal. There are always a few jackasses though...

Yet another article of great insight written by the clueless and so obviously gay new breed of journalist.
Like where's the back-bacon helmets? You call yourselves Canadian? What about vambraces made out of 750ml Molson cans, and shin guards out of the 950's.
Just as I thought - you know nothing.

Huh? F that, poison sucked back then and they suck now. No self respecting metalhead EVER listened to Poison, Jon BonBlowme, Warrant, Winger or any of the countless other glamfag "hair metal" bands. That's not metal, it was Pop music like 'lica.

heavy metal isnt what you fucking look like, its almost more of a state of mind, wearing metal clothes is just a form of showing people what you like, anyone who takes it to seriously is retarded. i work for aliving and I cant be wearing my opeth and slayer shirts all the time but does that make me any less of a metalhead? fuck no

Hey Biofreeze...why are you using my name? I'm not for everyone...lol.
I agree that clothing isn't what makes a metalhead, it's who you are. Anymore I see guys in suits that just got off work at shows right next to the kid with hair down to his ass - both headbang and throw up some horns...now that's metal!
I am glad the 80s are over...I remember the days of shredded jeans, bandanas, and my black leather jacket worn under a jean jacket with no sleeves and a Slayer patch on the back...ahhhh, the good old days....

there is "subculture fashion" if you like and you can´t deny that. That Rocker/Metalhead attire has been featured in publication about subculture clothing styles and fashion already. There is a dutch book, I thnk it is called "Dressed to kill" on uniforms in fashion and music, starting with the Beatles (Sgt Pepper) going till the early/mid nineties.
And: Metal (as music, way of life and also "fashion") is a classic and a winner! Basically that classic style is a round since the late 60ies with little modifications. It is more or less solid in itself, therefore it is not really interesting for the trendy and the fashion victims looking for the flavour of the month.

What you dress like shouldn't matter much. As long as you're knowledgeable and passionate about the music, you're not a poser.
You'd be surprised at the people who wear the clothes and have the tats and piercings. They have all of that yet they own about 5 cd's. Dumb.
I have no tats or piercings and seldom wear metal shirts. Yet I've been listening to the music for about 20 years. I used to have long hair, but now I shave my head. Hey, it looks better than having a skullet.
And yeah when I was a kid I had the long hair and denim jacket.
