BLACK SABBATH Drummer 'Curses' Upcoming MARK CHAPMAN Movie

BLACK SABBATH drummer Bill Ward has issued the following statement via his official web site: "Just got the shit news that there's going to be a movie about the asshole who shot John Lennon. As a Lennon fan [and] admirer, I can't believe that this film is coming out on general release. I object completely that we have available to us a movie about a guy who robbed millions of people of so much, who stamped out a brilliant mind, and who broke apart a family. When John Lennon died, my heart broke, and I've never gotten over his death, and I know that millions of other people got hurt also. "Whoever is responsible for this movie, the money, the producers, the cast, the music, I fail to see how you can participate in anything that could bring more infamy to an already infamous murderer, robber and pain-bringer. I curse this movie, and hope that it rots in hell. I hope it's an utter failure. "For me personally, it feels like another kick in the balls. It still hurts. He's been dead now for awhile, but it still hurts. This movie can only open up old wounds. For the sake of what? Truth? I think not." According to Roger Friedman of FoxNews.com, the basic story of "Chapter 27" casts Jared Leto as the odious Mark David Chapman and Lindsay Lohan as a minor character named Jude. It follows Chapman's activities leading up to the killing, painting him as a jolly fan who is obsessed with "The Catcher in the Rye". The web site for Peace Arch Films describes it as thus: "The story portrays Chapman's mental collapse, which is played out through his obsession with J.D. Salinger's classic novel 'The Catcher in the Rye', as Chapman's demons win over and persuade him to shoot Lennon on the steps of Lennon's apartment building, The Dakota." Read more at FoxNews.com.

out of almost every single quote and comment i read on here made by a lot of band members these days, this would actually have to be one of the most logical and fair statement made. Anyone else agree? I think he's absolutely right in what he says, there is nothing that can come of this movie other then taking a heartbreaking story and trying to make money from it.

What was Lennon supposed to do? Turn down all the money? From what I have read about the man he did help alot of people. The song
has alot more meaning than just "Imagine no possessions..." Actually listening to the song might help.

It's like saying that any movie about a serial killer shouldn't be made, much like NeroKalem said in one of the above posts.
"Monster" was probably one of my favorite movies of the last 5-10 years. I'm pretty sure that didn't put any money in the pockets of the estate of Eileen Wurnos.

I believe that John Lennon hired Mark Chapman to kill him so he could get away from Yoko. John knew that divorce wouldn't work because he'd still have to deal with her. The only solution was to put a hit out on himself. Knowing how crazy Yoko is, it makes sense.

I don't see how this could effect too much on people considering theres already been movies like this out take for instance Saleena who was killed at a young age yet no one really remembers that now now do they. Yes it sucks ass that shit happend, yes its sad that producers make money off these musicians and yes its offending but no one can stop it it doesnt matter, hell they are making a movie on Kurt Cobains life theres no difference so anyone who is so offended by this... get over it... just dont watch the movie when it comes out.

Ward's quote isn't about restricting free speech or expression...it's about taste! I'll probably see the movie because I'm a huge Lennon fan and am interested to see how they tell the story, but you can't knock Ward for showing disdain and disgust over a movie that will basically make money over Lennon's death. We can't judge it until its release, but his comments appear very sincere if arguably ignorant for not having seen it yet.
And Lennon was an asshole. A cheating, abusive asshole. But he laid his faults out for anyone to see, and made some of the best music of the last century. And more than anyone he realized that "Imagine" was a hopeless dream of a world that will never exist. And outside of Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) he's one of the few song writers that can give me chills listening to certain tracks over and over again.

Sure, that's fine, but if you go about stopping releases because of opinions about "bad taste", a whole lot of music out there would not be available. You could say Paranoid is in bad taste because it's about someone with a mental disorder. You could say that Suicide Solution is in bad taste because Bon Scott died as a result of alcohol. Since Slayer was mentioned, you could say that Slayer is in bad taste because there have been so many people affected directly by serial killers over the years.
As the saying goes, Bill Ward's opinions are like assholes - everybody's got one. Do I agree with his opinions about the movie? Yeah. But these people have every right to put it out the same as Bill Ward has a right to rake in royalties off of Sabbath albums. Expression is expression, regardless of who agrees with you.
Lennon's entire life was based on his ability to express his thoughts and ideas. And to say that the people involved in this movie don't have the same rights? Ridiculous.
