LED ZEPPELIN, VAN HALEN, GUNS N' ROSES Top Guitar Solo Poll - Mar. 26, 2006
Britain's Telegraph.co.uk is reporting that LED ZEPPELIN's "Stairway to Heaven" has been voted the best guitar solo of all time.

The anthem beat the likes of GUNS N' ROSES' "Paradise City" and JIMI HENDRIX's "Voodoo Child" to best air guitar moment.

Despite never being released as a single, the 1971 song remains one of the most-played rock songs ever, and has been covered by everyone by artists from DOLLY PARTON to ROLF HARRIS.

Other tracks in the top 10 include THE EAGLES' "Hotel California", CREAM's "Crossroads", OZZY OSBOURNE's "Crazy Train" and QUEEN's "Bohemian Rhapsody".

Almost 2,000 readers of Total Guitar magazine, including music teachers and professional guitarists, voted in the poll.

The magazine's editor Stephen Lawson said: "I'm not surprised that 'Stairway to Heaven' is number one - not only is Jimmy Page's solo incredibly ballsy and a little bit flash, but it is also brilliantly structured."

Top 10 guitar solos, according to readers of Total Guitar magazine:

01. LED ZEPPELIN – "Stairway to Heaven"
02. VAN HALEN - "Eruption"
03. GUNS N' ROSES - "Paradise City"
04. THE EAGLES - "Hotel California"
05. METALLICA - "Enter Sandman"
06. CREAM - "Crossroads"
07. JIMI HENDRIX - "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)"
08. OZZY OSBOURNE - "Crazy Train"
09. FREE - "All Right Now"
10. QUEEN - "Bohemian Rhapsody"

great tunes, but in most cases the solos aren't the most memorable part. Hangar 18 has to be up there somewhere...Friedman can burn the fretboard. So, so many Stevie Ray Vaughn songs kick the shit out of these (except for EVH of course).

isn't his name Jimmy Paige. Well I guess that one got under the radar
it's kinda sad how the bands and songs they put up are so well known and over rated. There was a lot of bands that had really well thought out solo's, but since not to many people have heard of them they will cease to exist to most people.

Of course none of the choices are going to be metal. The poll is more of a top 40 (most popular) songs. I am surprised one song is not up there, Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb. I think David Gilmour's phrasing and use of tone makes the song what it is. Much better solo than everything up there and yet it was in the top 40 and all the classic rocks stations.

One more solo should be mentioned is Gary Moore's "Still Got the Blues for you". That would not make it because it was a minor hit. To me, those two solos I mentioned is two of the best solos ever.

My top 10 (not in any order)..

The Scorpions - The Sails of Charon
Gary Moore - Still Got the Blues
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Queen - These Are the Days of Our Lives
Dream Theater - Under a Glass Moon
Any Randy Rhoads solo (I just can't pick)
UFO - Rock Bottom (Strangers in the Night live CD)
Eric Johnson - Cliffs of Dover
Dokken - Tooth and Nail (I know... it is Dokken and I am
running out of ideas. Still a great solo)
Twisted Sister - We're Not Gonna Take It

No enter sandman shouldnt be on that list but have a listen to solo in Struggle Within, thats a kick ass solo (and on the black album). As for Stairway, that solo is priceless because it was essentially improvised. Page did 2 takes and that was it. Absolutely brilliant.

These things are never ever the greatest Guitar solos ever. Eruption is much better then any of the songs on their. Enter Sandman isnt a great solo either, Metallica have much better ones, but no 1 has heard of those songs so theyre not put on. HANGER 18 should be on their, its insane. So for that matter should loads of other megadeth songs. No Iron Maiden or Judas Priest Solos either.

well im not surprised stairway one. it is probably the greatest and what they said about the structure is true. id love to there the other 2 takes he took on it they're both completely different.

wuts up with the gnr though. theres way better solos than the 1 in that tune. the opening melody lick is awesome but as far as solos i think nightrain is far superior or even sweet child, welcome to the jungle, and it's so easy have better ones.

as for metallica. i have no idea how any of that guys solos get on any fuckin list. even before the wah pedal "which he's really been using since kill 'em all but he likes to say he discoverd it during the black album sessions) his solos sucked. allways the same rerun shit with nervous bends all over the place.

Whoever conducted this poll obviously don't know shit about rock guitar solo's. IMO, Eruption should be # 1 always until someone can do something better, which noone has even came close! Cream-Crossroads? How the fuck did Eric Clapton get crowned as a guitar gunslinger? Stevie Ray Vaughn's guitar playing mops the deck with anything that dweeb has ever done!

Metallica's best solo is definately NOT Enter Sandman. And Guns N' Roses best solo is definately debateable.

Ride the Lightning or One- Metallica
Floods- Pantera
November Rain or Sweet Child O' Mine- Guns N' Roses
Free Bird- Lynyrd Skynyrd
Tornado of Souls- Megadeth
Starla or Here is No Why or Cherub Rock- the Smashing Pumpkins (Billy Corgan and James Iha are very underrated guitarists)
The Hive- In Flames
Painkiller- Judas Priest

Raining Blood or some "screaming demon" Slayer solo should be on there too. And one of my favorite air guitar moments that I will get laughed at is "Nothin' but a Good Time"- Poison. And another thing you hardcore kids will hate is the fact that I think Trivium is awesome and I would watch them for some great solo potential.

It says "guitar solo", NOT "fastest guitar solo". Speed and flash is easy; making a statement that takes the song higher is not...and WAY too many metal players are guilty of confusing the two. The reason you always see Page and Clapton placing highly in polls like these is because they almost never make that mistake. Any one of you could pick up a guitar today and play faster than Page or Clapton in 2 years - it wouldn't make anything you have to play worth hearing.

blessed be.

If this poll was by guitar teachers, then they are a bunch of boring traditionalists with no imagination or courage.

That's very 'rock n roll', isn't it.

When I have taught guitar, I have taught songs by Carcass, Morbid Angel and Johny Cash. Now that's great guitar work ... especially the Johny Cash

Professional guitarists and music teachers are only able to name radio hits for a guitar solo poll? This would be a top 10 compiled by asking random people off the street in the age range of 15-65. You can't blame a random boob selected from the general public for not having knowledge of good music but professionals and educators coming up with Enter Sandman and Paradise City? Good God.
