KORN Guitarist MUNKY To Release Instrumental Solo Album - Mar. 30, 2006
Ultimate-Guitar.com recently conducted an interview with KORN guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer. An excerpt from the chat follows:

Ultimate-Guitar.com: Ever thought of doing a solo album to give these shredding tendencies of yours an outlet?

Munky: "Absolutely, and it's going to happen. At the moment I'm kind of going with the concept of what it is going to sound like. It's going to be an instrumental record and it's going to have a lot of atmospheric and ambient guitar textures and a lot of open cut spaces. But there won't be too much shredding but just enough to get the point across. That is the concept I have about it right now. I'm going to start working on the record after once we get back from an Australian tour in late April."

Ultimate-Guitar.com: One of your distinct characteristics of your playing style is the way you bend the strings and then slowly release them to create the effect of a guitar going out of tune, how did that technique evolve?

Munky: "It was something I came up with around 1992. If you've ever heard an orchestra tuning up, it sounds really eerie and when I first heard it on a sample that a DJ friend had of an orchestra tuning up, I thought it was the scariest thing I ever heard. So I wanted to emulate that on that on my guitar and that is how it came out."

Ultimate-Guitar.com: In regards to your guitar playing and approach to it, who do you class as being the cornerstone musical influence on it?

Munky: "I would definitely say Steve Vai had a big influence and remains my main influence. I mean that is the reason why I went out and bought a seven string guitar in the first place. He had come out with a record called 'Passion and Warfare' and it just blew my mind. So he's always and will always be an influence and an inspiration. He's always pushing the envelope and I respect that, so I try to incorporate that into what we do as a band and in regards to pushing ourselves. I harness the same ambition that he has, for us too."

Believe it or not, on the current tour, there is a 7 minute space for Munky alone to do a solo and he shreds. The solo is actually surprisingly lyrical and unexpected as it shows off that he's so much more capable then people who are fans of the band, and especially people on this site know. But naysayers will be naysayers. Don't give anything a chance. Just keep listening to your shitty obscure "troo" metal bands....

whatever

You know, I heard "Heads" solo, and it's wasn't very good.
I doubt that Monky's is much better.

As far as Korn goes, I bet everything Head said about Korn was right.

Like Sadistic Turtle said, Munky has a solo every night. I seen it on Tuesday night and I was saying to myself...I bet these people standing here don't understand how much time it takes to learn a skill like that. Munky is a great showman, I'm interested in what he will show us on this solo project.

One thing, or the only thing, i admired bout munky and heads guitaring was there use of there effects. They could pull out sum SICK as effects. But as shredders, naw I've seen better.

How do you know the extent of his guitaring ability? Have you spoke with him personally? Has he himself played for you personally?

What I'm saying is, how do you know whether he can shred or not?

Ok CircleOvZaphyan you're an idiot. You may of heard KoRn before, but not Munky playing a solo you retard.
Nu metal wanksta? Yeah you're cool for stating that. Like the 1000's of others who say shit about KoRn being nu metal.
Their Nu metal, God.. Get over it.

And truthbetold, KoRn sales have gone down since Head left? Haha, they were so dieing with Head in the band. When he left, that's when KoRn had made the most sales they have had in a long time.

Don't say shit about Munky unless you've heard him play his solo. And judging from the people that have seen Munky play his solo and have posted so far... Majority of them have said he rocked. So just shut the fuck up all you dicks who just say shit about him when you know nothing.

Can't wait to hear what Munky's capible of in his CD. I'm sure he will blow us away.

......I saw them at the end of last year at a KROQ show and Munky seemed to be struggling with that "Another Brick in the Wall" solo......it seemed pretty awkward......(and that's a really simple solo).

Not trying to be a "hater"......I hope he proves me wrong!

truth be told... truthbetold is full of it.
Head left cuz he wasn't happy "worshipping money" sound like a payroll problem? i don't think so. pllus he was messed up on drugs for a long time, and he felt like his personal values didn't mesh with the way Korn is presented. he's gone off to get his life together. and Korn has never been better.
have you listened to the new album? i think not. it's above and beyond anything they've done so far. once again, Korn pushing the standards. drop in sales? wtf? Other Side was platinum in like 3 weeks! reason? cuz it truly rocks!

to ripurfuckinfaceoff77, Pestilence, \m/'.'\m/:
anyone who's heard Munky's solo on the current tour would have no doubts that his solo project will be just as righteous. the man's got skills! always has. and he's finally getting a chance to show them off!

Korn seems to ride a thin edge with "hard music" fans just because they make no compromizes on style and they play what THEY want to play. you can't keep the same fans forever with a tough standard like that. they have my admiration, for staying true to what they want Korn to be, not what the label or the fans or the media wants them to be.

Hydra: if you can't appreciate Korn for what they are, it's time for you to move on. cuz standing there pitching your little fit at a band you can't enjoy is just childish.

peace

They're a boy band with "heavy" guitars.
Munky sucks even if he can shred because he can't write good songs, and that's what being a musician is all about. It's not about "shredding".

The reason I went was because I wanted to see Mudvayne (and I got the tickets for free) but when Korn came on, there was a part in between the set where Munky played a long solo. I was actually suprised by how well he plays lead. I mean, he's no Steve Vai and he wasn't sweeping all over the place, but he played some pretty heartfelt guitar licks that were very complicated. I hope if Korn makes another album, he does some soloing on it, because he's a very underrated guitarist.

I went to this tour about a month ago, Munky does about 7 minute long solo and it is fucking amazing, too bad he never did this before. Solos don't really seem to fit with Korn's earlier stuff anyway, atleast I think.
