DAVID LEE ROTH Threatened With 'Disciplinary Action' Over Morning-Show Format

FMQB.com is reporting that former VAN HALEN frontman David Lee Roth was back on the air this morning after being pulled by CBS Radio for the past two mornings. Well, " Dave" Roth was back, with some noticeable changes including the disappearance of his sidekicks and the over 40 different music beds that would rotate during his program. "Actually, it's Dave Roth," the rock star-turned-radio morning man explained today (March 31) on his program. "There's a variation here. [I'm] no longer D Ro. We've been asked to get rid of the loops and the music and the general gang here." Down to just his board-op Hutch as the only other person in the studio, Roth said he was facing "disciplinary action" if he didn't adhere to new "an entirely new format" set forth in a four page letter issued by CBS Radio, which included talk without music beds, more discussion of currents news items, and the introduction of sports as a topic of conversation. Roth said he would be fired if he continued to do his program as he had been and that CBS Radio would not be obligated to pay out the remainder of his contract. "I wouldn't be surprised if they bring in a gal to read the weather or read the traffic," Roth suggested. "If I didn't know any better I would say they are trying to sabotage the deal, but I know they fully support and love me." He later added, "[ CBS Radio CEO/President] Joel Hollander did tell me I needed to be flexible, but I didn't know he meant I would need a lubricant." Read more at FMQB.com.

I admit, I listened to the show today, just to hear the train wreck. And I was not disappointed. Dave has lost all confidence. Hopefully, he'll get back on the road soon, and not as an EMT.

If you think VH would have been as successful without Roth, I disagree. He was the prototype lead man back then.
Also, what happened to VH when he left? Oh yeah, they became a pop group. He is the one who told Ed to stay off the keyboards and stick to the guitar. But we know how things ended up - suckville.

Thats a good point. Dave DID tell Ed to lay off the keys and from the point where Dave left, VH was really boring in my opinion. He should have stuck to the guitar like Vai and Satch and every other great guitarist out there. He could at least act like he still plays and do a solo album. Vinnie Paul could do drums.

I hated Howard Stern and still do but I think satellite is a good place for him to do what he wants. DLR should do the same unless he wants corporate bigwigs meddling in his show all the time. I think it's ridiculous that they want him to talk about sports...if people want to hear about sports, there are tons of sports talk stations out there. It would be nice if they would just lay the FCC laws out there clear, and say, you're the host of the show, as long as you don't outright violate any laws, it's in your hands, do what you want. I have never listened to DLR on the radio nor do I plan to since I don't dig that kind of stuff, but I do think it's sad that everytime someone goes on the radio they have someone telling them what they can play, what topics they have to talk about, etc. I worked in radio for a year, mostly doing ads and news because there just wasn't a place for creativity as a live personality. That's the cesspool that radio is becoming. Furthermore, I make more money operating a cash register than I did in radio, which I got a college degree in. Explain that to me.

booker? give me a break... he tried doing a morning show with his girlfriend, j.lo's sister, about a year or two ago on some new poppy station and failed miserably... i tried to tune in for 5 minutes and never went back to it again...
dlr sounded very dejected this morning... it was sad... i actually enjoyed his concept... hell, what kind of format did cbs expect when they went and hired a guy whose whole career is based on being colorful, different and out there? the added bonus was that he sounded half-intelligent doing the show...
the station provided him with no guests for the first couple of weeks and he had to resort to bringing in family members to mimic having guests in...
the stupid letter of directives that they gave him (he read parts of it on the air) amounted to what is cbs covering their legal asses... it basically read like someone getting "written up" in the office for the purpose of documenting discipline with H.R.... i am betting that they are trying to develop a case where they can later fire him and not owe him the balance of his contract due to insubordination... very weak and short-term minded of cbs...
instead of helping to prop up dlr and supporting his show, they are taking a record label mentality to the whole thing... it's like when a new band on a major label doesn't go gold or platinum on their first record and they subsequently get dropped... dlr hasn't gotten the ratings yet but they yet expect to see something comparable to stern (like asking for a double-diamond album from a new band)...
fuck cbs! they ruined the station by eliminating music during the week, and they are now on their way to taking away my last reason to tune into the station altogether!

I saw an ad for DLR's show on the internet but never got round to listening to it, given that I'm in shitty England. Dave's always been a standup guy and played a big part (with EVH) in the genesis of metal and heavier rock, so it's a shame he's being treated like a bitch. I can think of a lot more less interesting people I'd rather see hung out to dry, give the man credit for his history at the very least.

First off, If you think he's so bad why are you listening? I tuned in on his first day and listened for about 10 minutes before I turned it off and I never tuned back. DLR and Van Halen really need to get seriously crackin' on this reunion, before people stop caring. Put your differences aside and put out a record. I don't even care if you tour or not, a new record would suffice.
Btw, all Radio stations suck. Everything they play is terrible and they shove the same shit down your throat a millions times a day. The FCC and the Religious Right is fucking things up for us normal people. I find about good music through reading shit, mostly on the internet not on the radio.

I wouldn't say it's over yet. If this little news piece had two comments I wouldn't argue with you "sceptics". But every time there is a story about Dave or Ed on Blabbermouth it stirs peoples emotions up.
