ALICE IN CHAINS Promise 'A Few Surprises' On Upcoming Tour

ALICE IN CHAINS manager Susan Silver has confirmed to Launch Radio Networks that the band have selected William DuVall to sing lead vocals with the group on their upcoming European tour (as first reported by BLABBERMOUTH.NET yesterday), adding that there will also be "a few surprises." DuVall performed two songs with the reunited ALICE IN CHAINS last month in New Jersey at a taping of the VH1 Classic series "Decades Rock Live!". Guitarist Jerry Cantrell told Launch that he'd also like to see other musicians perform with the reactivated group, who are touring in honor of late singer Layne Staley. "The door's open to invite anybody," he said. We'd like anybody to be a part of it. There's tons of guys that we love and that Layne loved, you know, that we'd love to be a part of this on a part-time basis." DuVall, who sings and plays guitar in COMES WITH THE FALL, has also sung ALICE IN CHAINS material as part of Cantrell's solo touring band. Guest singers who have jammed with the members of ALICE IN CHAINS during the past year include TOOL's Maynard James Keenan and former PANTERA frontman Philip Anselmo. Yesterday (Wednesday, April 5) marked the fourth anniversary of Staley's death. The band will begin its European tour on May 26 in Lisbon, Portugal. i loved Alice in Chains. great band. i just can't see anyone other than Layne or Jerry doing the vocals.. i mean its cool to have Phil Anselmo and Maynard do it, but it can't be the same.. i dunno.. i think they should just continue on as a 3-piece. Jerry has a good enough voice.

Yes Layne was amazing and personified much of the lyrics. Jerry Cantrell, in my opinion was the biggest musical force in the band. He sang on most every song, lead vocals on quite a few. On top of that he wrote almost all the music and a surprisingly (unless you pay attention to this stuff) wrote a lot of the lyrics, even ones which Layne sang. So, while Layne was the frontman and the one on which the spotloght shone brightest, give Cantrell is due. If him and the other guys want to play music, there is no reason I can think of not too. At the absolute most, you can say they should change their name, but I say KEEP ROCKING.

I think Layne Staley was one of the finest singers of his generation and for you to desecrate that accomplishment by attempting to define him by one of his flaws . . . well, I just hope you are never held to the same standard.

a lot of immaturity on this site. Fuck the lot of you. I'm glad the AIC guys are out playing music together again. I'd rather they'd tour as a 3-piece because I wasn't that hot on Duvall's vocals, but that's alot to lay on Jerry's shoulders. It would be tough for Jerry to tackle some of the songs that Layne made his own.
Jerry wrote most of the music and lyrics for the band and was forced to step up to the plate vocally due to Layne's problems.
You gotta respect the man.

And anyone who thinks different needs to experience it live. As for Jerry singing the parts himself - he CAN'T - because THAT would sound like SHIT. Not because Jerry isn't a fantastic singer, but because, if you listen to all of the old AIC stuff, it's harmonies, which Jerry and Layne were amazing for - but neither of them could do it solo.
It's also why so many of the Mad Season songs featured Layne double-tracked.

Lemme tell ya, that is grunge at it's most absurd.
