DAVE MUSTAINE: 'I Don't Want To Have Any Part Of METALLICA Feud Anymore' - Apr. 10, 2006
Jeb Wright of Classic Rock Revisited recently conducted a short interview with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:

Classic Rock Revisited: As you watch the finished ["The Arsenal of Megadeth" DVD], what do you feel? You have had some good and some bad in your life, as we all know.

Dave: "We all have good and bad things in our life. Because I am a public figure, people tend to take sides. What do I have now in my life that causes me problems? I have the ongoing feud with METALLICA that I don't want to have any part of anymore. I have come to terms with all of that and I would like to consider them friends. I also have a feud with Kerry King of SLAYER. I have no idea what that is even about as I have nothing against Kerry. In my entire life, I have two problems. How many people do you know that only have two problems in their life? The sad thing about it is that it is publicized."

Classic Rock Revisited: You do tend to get made into the bad guy...

Dave: "It is quite comical. We were all friends, and deep down inside, we are probably all still friends. The problems we have are very controversial and there is always some journalist that wants to stir shit up. I won't be part of it anymore. I respect them and I would like to keep it that way."

Classic Rock Revisited: In the media you are often portrayed as an angry person but in interviews you usually come across as a cool dude. Your music is full of angst. I want to know if you used your anger to propel your success?

Dave: "Certainly I did. Anger is a terrible motivator for most areas in a human beings life. When it comes to picking up a guitar and channeling your anger through it, angst is much more healthy. You have to remember that there was a time in this society when people like Lenny Bruce went to prison for saying fuck on stage. Now you are not considered any good unless you say fuck!"

Classic Rock Revisited: Is your [arm] injury completely healed and if so how far back to 100% are you playing-wise?

Dave: "It is 100% fine. Actually, because I had to re-learn how to play I have overcame a lot of crutches that I used to use. I am actually playing better than I was before. Some of the songs I relearned and kind of cheated but now I have gone back and cleaned them up a lot. I am playing with a group of people that I love playing with."

For fucks sake give it a rest already. Mustaine has never recorded an album with Metallica, he's on their demo "No Life Till Leather" which was recorded in 1982! It's not like Mustaine never moved on with his life, he went on to form his own band that released a slew of albums with great success. Sure he may never reach the status or make the kind of money Metallica has but, Mustaine's not starving. All the money he made in his career went into his body in the form of drugs and alcohol...so if he's broke he has no one to blame but himself. 99% of every Mustaine interview I've read mentions Metallica...fucking shit happened 24 years ago. If a journalist asks about the so-called fued just avoid the question and move on. Another problem is that little fuck Lars eggs him on and he falls for it. The scene in Some Kind Of Monster with the shrink was fucking embarrassing for Mustaine, what was he thinking when he agreed to that crap. These are successful rich grown men acting like schoolyard girls...give me a break.

Kerry King may be a good guitar player, but I don't think he is very innovative.
I think he has always been the weakest link in Slayer. His solos are...how should I put it?.....Boring.

When is this year's Gigantour going to be announced? Also, I don't think that any of these "feuds" really matter, as long as everyone continues to put out music (and the case of these people - music that stands up to their legacies). Megadeth, Metallica and Slayer are all obviously of extreme importance to Thrash - it's all good.

Dave uses Johnson and Johnson's 'No more tears' Baby Shampoo.

Not only does it keep his blonde hair pretty and shiny, but it also keeps his eyes nice and dry. Unless he thinks about the pain james and lars caused him on that horrible day, over 20 years ago. Then not even the shampoo can stop the flood of tears.

Lars has severe Napoleon complex and continues to run his mouth whenever possible. He's been fueling the fued for press for years. How can Dave get passed it when the leprechaun keeps chiding him at every turn.

Metallica continues to lift riffs from Dave all the time including the Lord's prayer, let's not forget that little diddy.

The major difference in the music is that Megadeth as constantly has put out meaningful compelling metal the entire span of their existance whereas MyTurdLicker hasn't put out a decent record in 15 years. C'mon there's, Load (get it, kind of like the one I let loose just before getting online, sorry sewage system), ReLoad, St Inker, an orchestra couldn't even help them and a repackaging of substandard covers which any decent garage tribute band could do in their sleep. Met lovers give them way too much credit just because they had the Warner Bros label family money to promote the shit out of them. Megadeth did not. MD went with smaller labels in exchange for artistic freedom and now no one owns Dave's soul whereas Met signed up with a big conglom and their music and soul are forever entrenched in big business. Sure, they have more money but at a significant cost to musical integrity and purity that they are lost when it comes to song writing and recording and are forced to use crappy producers. Now Rick (Def Jam) Rubin comes in, albeit at a very high fee, to try and save them from the commercial soulless abysee. Rick is great. No denying that. He's become a latter day George Martin but if the talent and drive isn't there, can he even save what was once a very long time ago a metal band? Most of us would like to believe so. I would. As much as despise the last 15 years of Met's existance I want to see them come back but not hold my breathe. I am however very much looking forward to Megadeth and the new life and drive that the Drovers will bring to the band. Dave's vision has a new set of teeth to gnaw with and I can't wait. Just like seeing and waiting for the next installment of Gigantour. Dave's taking a fresh take and giving the people what they want, pure molten metal. Not like that other lame ass regurgitated tour that is past it's prime.

Megadeth is undoubtedly IMO the best metal band of all time simply for the fact it has never had to comprimise at the expense of musical integrity. Slayer, Priest, Maiden are also bands that have been blessed with those attributes as well. When you have something great and you don't have to fuck with it too much then it will last. Unfortunately, Metallica got in bed with money and lots of it and it's forever tarnished any gains they may have made. It's gotta be tiring to have to regain respect where other bands immediately command it.

Er, no I really don;t think so .. In MY opinion (only) you really can't alledge that Youthanasia is a 'good' or 'uncompromising' metal album.

That fact alone and the stigma attached to it will take a looooong time to erase from most people's minds.

Slayer, on the other hand personify NO COMPROMISE.
That's nto what it takes to become great tho.
Sabbath are great.

I agree that it must be mad for some to have to earn respect, btu no one ouwld try if it were otherwise.

Very well put thoughts tho dude, very good indeed.

Funny how Dave is friendly w/ Metallica until he has an album coming out, or a failed tour to go on. Then he has no issue bringing up their name because like it or not, mentioning Metallica gets you a boat load of press.

He knows very well that the mainstream press would have totally ignored him if he simply was out to promote the album/tour last time around, so he beat a dead horse - again.

I like Dave and think it would be cool if he, Lars, and James would just end the bitching rather than use it when it's convenient for them.

In their prime Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer made some of the best metal of all time. I don`t see the point in taking sides just because of any spats the bands may have had. As a fan I love Master of Puppets, Rust in Peace and Reign in Blood. Couldn`t give a fuck what the band members think of each other. I`ve never met any of them personally and don`t like to form opinions of someone based on snippets of interviews.

Actually,dumbass.

James never had a crack addict and claims he never tried it while Dave later developed one.

James did develop a very serious drinking problem which escalated YEARS after Dave was kicked from the band and entered rehab to save his marriage and essentially Metallica from complete destruction and has remained sober for 5 years.

Dave slipped up shortly after James celebrated his one year mark of sobriety and ended Megadeth as a result of injuries sustained only to later reactivate the band and the thing is he continues to drink (not as hard as he used to) while James can actually say he has avoided slipping back into the habit.

Sure,it might not seem like all that much but eventually when you "slip up once it becomes two, three, four, five and you drink yourself or drug yourself into the cycle again and for James to stay clean while Dave slips up (and he admitting to drinking again in a previous interview) is alot more positive on Metallica's end than it would be for Dave.
