PAUL STANLEY's Lead Guitarist Talks About KISS Frontman's New Solo CD - Apr. 10, 2006
Thomas S. Orwat, Jr. of Glam-Metal.com recently conducted an interview with guitarist Brad Fernquist, who performed most of the lead guitar on the new solo album from KISS frontman Paul Stanley. An excerpt from the chat follows:

Glam-Metal.com: Another one of my favorite artists that you have worked with is Paul Stanley of KISS. You worked with him on his soon-to-be-released solo record, right?

Fernquist: "Yes, I did. I played almost all the leads on his record. I also played some rhythm guitar. That was a really great experience. He was totally fun to hang out with and he was funny. I meet him before briefly but never spent any time with him, so I didn't know what he was like or what to expect. But he turned out to be a great guy to be around. And the music is very cool."

Glam-Metal.com: What does it sound like?

Fernquist: "Well, I'm younger, so I think that he brought me in because he wanted it to sound more like modern rock. If it does sound like KISS, it's because it's Paul Stanley. But it's modern rock, it does have some heavy tunes and a couple of laid back ballads. But overall it sounds very modern."

Glam-Metal.com: Did you co-write any of the material with him?

Fernquist: "No, no definitely not. Basically what happened is I worked for an artist that Doc McGee managed and he called me in and Paul liked my playing and from there it just worked out."

Glam-Metal.com: Wow, what a great gig that must have been. There are probably 30 million guitarists out there that would have killed for the chance to play on Paul Stanley's new upcoming release.

Fernquist: "Yeah, it was pretty cool. To be honest because I'm younger, I kind of missed out on the whole KISS thing. I knew the obvious songs and hits and stuff like that, but I kind of missed the whole big KISS thing. But even so, I still knew who KISS and Paul Stanley were, but I didn't grow up learning Ace Frehley riffs or anything like that. But don't get me wrong, it was definitely cool working with him, I had to pinch myself a few times to prove that I wasn't dreaming. It was fun. He was a very cool guy to work with."

Glam-Metal.com: Do you consider yourself a Kiss fan now after working with him?

Fernquist: "Definitely. I actually had a chance, because I was out on the road touring, and got a chance to see my first KISS show a couple summers ago in either Houston or Dallas. And I totally got it. I was like 'Wow, this is like the biggest show I've ever seen.' And I've been to a lot of big shows. It had you interested from the beginning to the end. The guys in the GOO GOO DOLLS are big KISS fans as well and I've learned a lot about KISS through those guys. But, after seeing their show, I would buy tickets in a second to watch them play again."

There's a certain magic within KI$$. Outside of that the only member to write good rock is Ace Frehley. I'll wait for it in the bargain bin.

WILL receieve a blow job from paul--thats how bad this disc is going to be. in fact, its going to be so bad, that it will be able to qualify as a modern art masterpiece. even the dada's, if still functioning, would reject it.

you can probably give a guitar to a deaf mute and bongos to a paraplegic--and they would still make something more modren sounding. but thats ok. we know at least one copy will be sold when kissrules is the first in line to buy this steaming pile of shit

Is this guy 12-years-old or something? How can you possibly miss the "big Kiss thing" if you count the persisent "reunion tour" and Psycho Circus (yes, I know it sucked)? Granted, it wasn't 1977 all over again, but you still had to be living in a cave if you missed any of that.

KI$$ has been a joke since, what- 1975?

Let's play disco.
Let's flood the market with crappy merch.
Let's force record stores to take obscene numbers of our 4 lame solo albums.
Let's do a concept record so bad it puts Spinal Tap to shame.
Let's get a shredder.
Let's get outside songwriters to help with our lame ballads.
Let's get poofy hair and Bon Jovi boots.
Let's go grunge.
Let's do the reunion/farewell/reunion/farewell/reunion.
Let's play with an orchestra.

Come on, these guys have sucked for a long time.... the last time they were relevant, Foghat was headlining arenas and Ford was president.

I miss KI$$. The real KI$$. The mighty KI$$. KI$$ is dead. Sorry. I have my memories...

1975,but i gotta agree that they seem to forget it should be about the music and not selling coffins, coffee mugs, colonge, and anything they can stick their name on.It just goes to show the more money you make the more money you want. They already have enough money so they should either try and make kick ass music again or give it up.

Granted, KISS became a shell of their former selves years ago, but I gotta believe that Paul is going to put out a good record. He's always been the better songwriter of the bunch (along with Ace of course). I'm not expecting anything life-changing, but I'm sure there will be some good tunes and some kick-ass vocals from one of the most underappreciated frontmen in rock history.

I'm a huge Kiss fan. They've been my favorite band since I first saw them in 2004. Yeah, I know, Tommy was there- but it was still freakin' amazing.

The fact that Kiss is so musically diverse is one of my favorite things about them. I like all eras of the band, except for the current one. I'm truly dissapointed in the lack of new music from the band that is now a nostalgia act. But they do deserve credit for what they have done.

Kiss had 6 years of great music that changed rock and roll. 1973-1978 (up to Alive II), you have to admit Kiss rocked. I've heard comments about them not deserving to be in the rock hall because they only have 6 years of good music. If you count Creatures of the Night and Revenge as good music (which you should), then that totals up to 8 years. Well, then that hack Jimi Hendrix dosn't deserve jack.

Kiss are a great band. Yeah, right now they need to get off their asses, gain some new integrity and make a new Kiss album, but at least Paul is creating new music. His 1978 solo was good, his songs in Kiss are good. He is the main force that drives Kiss, so maybe after his solo is put out there he might record a new Kiss record.

I'm concerned about the "modern" sound, with modern being "emo". I hate emo with a passion. I might hate the guitar playing, but I can at least count on Paul for good songwriting and vocals.

I just need to count on him getting the thing released. I think he's looking for a record company that will push the record, not just release it. He wants it to be successful, and is looking for a company that'll help him. Can't say I blame him, but in today's market, it'll be hard to find another Casablanca (especially since modern day Casablanca sucks).
