AC/DC, METALLICA, PANTERA Featured On 'Monsters in Moscow' DVD - Apr. 11, 2006
AC/DC, METALLICA, THE BLACK CROWES, PANTERA and E.S.T. made metal history when they performed at the very first open-air rock festival to be held in the former Soviet Union. Captured on film, "For Those About To Rock... We Salute You: Monsters in Moscow" presents a concert feature signalling the arrival of a new political order, demanded by the people and heralded in by the sounds of some of the biggest names in rock music. Warner Home Video will debut the title on DVD on June 5.

In September 1991, only a few days after an attempted military coup failed to restore Communism to the newly democratic Russia and its affiliated nations, 500,000 rock music fans converged in Moscow to enjoy the very first open-air rock concert.

The evening kicked off with PANTERA taking to the stage. Phil Anselmo did his very best to get the crowd going, but it seemed that the fans required little encouragement and obviously years of living in rock denial sent some into overdrive. Russian band E.S.T. was next up, but the evening really took shape with the arrival of THE BLACK CROWES.

A phenomenal performance from metal gods METALLICA is another high-point of this concert. Old-school classics "Enter Sandman", "Creeping Death" and "Fade To Black" deliver an eardrum battering and by the time the legendary AC/DC take centre stage, the evening has already cemented its place in rock history.

"For Those About To Rock…We Salute You: Monsters in Moscow" also offers a look at the efforts of the Russian Army to try and postpone the concert.

Pantera was "so-so" because the engineers were doing a sound check during (!) their set. E.S.T. got really lucky. They had some obvious pulling there, because they are not even Metal but rather Punk, and there were many legendary Russian metal bands wanting to get that slot.
Black Crows were also disliked; apparently some booing and throwing stuff on stage was involved.

Now, when the Metallica started their sound check, the whole crowd became alert and wild. Most of the people were there to see Metallica.

AC/DC was good too, but nothing exceptional.
Metallica stole the show.
Lots of people left after Metallica finished their set.

End of the story.
Thanks for reading.

I am sure they played more than 13 tunes. They should have extended it into at least 20 (the length of a full single concert).

The Moscow '91 version of Creeping Death is probably the best performance of that song EVER!

It's just incredible... and the vocals are definately the best ever too!

Wish I had been old enough to gone to the Black Album shows...

Can't wait for the new Metalli-material!

Have this on bootleg, Pantera, as blackviolin said were good but not great. Metallica's set was fucking devastating! Get it to see their rendition of Creeping Death! Seriously!

500k Ruskis shouting "Die!" is quite a sight.
Metallica should take a look at this and witness how cool they use to be (and by Metallica I mean Hetfield).

It said "first open-air rock festival to be held in the former Soviet Union." The FORMER Soviet Union. I am pretty sure it fell in 1991. In 1989, Russia was still called the Soviet Union.

That entire concert is already on the internet. Was an awesome show but the video kinda sucked in parts...like Pantera's set was all in black and white, kinda shitty quality too. Here I'll even give you the link to it so you can judge for yourselves:
