MASTODON: Cover Of METALLICA's 'Orion' Posted Online
- Apr. 12, 2006
|
|
MASTODON's cover of METALLICA's "Orion", which was recorded for the recently released Kerrang! magazine tribute to the METALLICA album "Master of Puppets", has been posted online at www.myspace.com/mastodon. Also available at the same location are pictures and videos from the recording sessions for MASTODON's new album, "Blood Mountain", tentatively due in August via Warner Bros. As previously reported, "Remastered" was packaged with a special issue of Kerrang! commemorating the 20th anniversary of "Master of Puppets". Other bands contributing to the CD include MACHINE HEAD ("Battery"), TRIVIUM ("Master Of Puppets"), MENDEED ("The Thing That Should Not Be"), BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE ("Welcome Home (Sanitarium)"), CHIMAIRA ("Disposable Heroes"), FIGHTSTAR ("Leper Messiah"), and FUNERAL FOR A FRIEND ("Damage, Inc."). Check out the "Remastered" cover artwork at this location. MASTODON's third album, "Blood Mountain", is being recorded with Seattle-based producer Matt Bayles ( ISIS, HORSE THE BAND). The CD will be mixed later in the month in New York by Rich Costey ( AUDIOSLAVE, MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE). Songtitles set to appear on the follow-up to 2004's "Leviathan" include "Circle of Cysquatch", "Hunters of the Sky", "The Sleeping Giant", "Bladecatcher", "The Colony of Birchmen", "Pendulous Skin", "The Siberian Divide", "Capillarian Crest", "Hand of Stone", "Crystal Skull", "The Wolf Is Loose" and "This Mortal Soil". In a recent interview with MTV.com, drummer Bränn Dailor said about the upcoming CD, "It's hard to be inside something and talk to people about it. And it's kind of a cliché that the people in the band think that what they're working on at the moment is the best stuff they've ever done. But I guess that's the way that we feel. It's just more intense, more — I mean I like everything we've ever done. But at the moment, I'm really digging on this stuff. It's hard for me to put into words what's different about it. It's just better." "I hope we can start a prog revolution, because the timing's right," he added. "You've got a TOOL record that's coming out, an Isis record that's coming out, a MARS VOLTA record that's coming out, a MASTODON record that's coming out, and I hope that converges into something really awesome for music where it doesn't become pop, but there's a little more sharing of the pie. It would be cool if you had kids in their bedrooms not trying to learn LINKIN PARK songs, but they're trying to learn MASTODON songs. It's cool music that's honest and from the heart, and it's technically challenging." Read more at MTV.com.

Does anyone else think this mix is very flat? Especially the drums. In fact, I think at least one of the guitars is out of tune. I mean, I thought 20 years later, technology would have provided some improvement in the sound. C'mon Mastadon, you can do better!

They play the main riff incorrectly. The least they could have done would have been to take the time to learn it properly.
Guitars sound like crap, although this is a compressed audio track.

This guy nailed it, it's Mastodon tuning and didn't need to butcher it by changing a classic song. It's completely true to the original but in their tuning

Although the album is not what it could have been. Machine Head and Mastodon delivers fine versions of the songs. It sounds like Machine Head and Mastodon but without doing it too different. Also the Trivium version is interensting for the way they've done the vocals. The rest of the bands do the first misstake in coveringing a song - trying to sound like the original version. Why bother?

I don't know what you guys are talking about, I thought this was played a little too close to the original. As for the sound, what a shock...it sounds like Mastodon instead of Metallica. I can't believe Mastodon sound like Mastodon! Where's the justice in that!
Anyway, I would have preferred to see Dailor just flat out own Lars Ulrich on this song. His style of fills would have worked well in this song, and they could have had some fun with time signatures especially in the mid section. I don't know if he held back out of respect or what, but to me its just a missed opportunity.
Finally, its illogical to bash someone for not sounding like Cliff Burton. If it was that easy to sound like Cliff Burton, nobody would remember who Cliff Burton was 20 years after we last heard from the guy.

Haha, its great how all of you are ripping the shit outta metallica one moment then saying how nothing can beat them the next.
This cover is pretty damn good I think, apart from the melow bit before the main solo kicks in, but I like their spins on the solos, and the drumming isn't bad either. Sure, the production is a bit crappy, but that doesn't stop this from being a good cover.
Battery by MH was fucking awesome, the highlight of the covers, triviums wasn't too bad considering I think most of their stuff is balls. Chimaira were alright too, but I'm sure a lot of you will complain about the vocals on it. Its just a shame all the rest of the bands were sub-par at best. Only funeral for a friend's cover was abysmal.

They could have done much more with Orion. It's like they just called each other and said "Dude, we gotta record that shit tomorrow! Do you even know the song?!".... It is obvious that they could have put a little more effort into it.
They missed on the oportunity to make an amazing cover with all the talent that Mastodon has, and how great the original Orion is. I am especially disappointed with Mastodon's drummer, he usually plays really excentric stuff and this time, he just didn't do anything espectacular.
This is just what happens to good bands, anyway. They raise the bar so much, and afterwards, it cannot be reached even by them. This happened to METALLICA, and is probably happening to TOOL, too.
It's not completely unenjoyable either!

What is thought to be the final mastered version of Mastodon's cover of Metallica's "Orion" has been posted online here. The version of the track which was included on "Remastered", the recently released Kerrang! backed 20th anniversary tribute to Metallica's "Master Of Puppets", was said to be an unmastered version and was apparently put on the disc by mistake. Mastodon expect to release their new album "Blood Mountain" through Warner in August.

I hope that's really not the final version. Sounds like a demo or a rehearsal or something, and you get the feeling that it's causing the drummer actual physical pain to just keep playing a simple Lars beat for eight minutes, without doing a drum fill every four seconds, like he usually does. Mastodon can do a LOT better than that. Of the two tracks I've heard from this, between Mastodon half-assing it, and Trivium ruining their otherwise decent cover with pseudo pop-punk vocals, this is not looking good at all.
