METALLICA's ULRICH: We Don't Need To Make Another 'St. Anger' - Apr. 17, 2006
METALLICA's Lars Ulrich has exclusively revealed to Kerrang! magazine that the band's new material has an "old-school" METALLICA flavor.

The metal legends are currently working on the follow-up to 2003's "St. Anger" in their own studio at METALLICA HQ in San Rafael, California.

"The last album was an unusual METALLICA album in that no one brought ideas into the studio. Everything you hear on that album was given birth to in the studio," the drummer notes. "This time around we've each brought in ideas as we used to — as well as working on some jams we had from from two summers ago — and James [Hetfield] and I are sorting through our CDs of riffs to put together stuff as we did back in the day.

"The new stuff is much more organic, more old school. It certainly doesn't feel like 'St. Anger' Part Two," Ulrich adds. "When we were rehearsing for our South African shows and started playing the 'St. Anger' stuff, it definitely felt very different to the rest of the set because of how the songs were put together. It was really important to make that record in the way we did because of the chaotic internal vibe at that time: 'St. Anger' was a statement, 55 minutes of brutality packed onto a CD, proving to ourselves that we still had the spark. 'St. Anger' was fun but we don't need to make that album again."

Ulrich says that the band have six or seven songs nearing completion, minus vocals and they are using producer Rick Rubin, famed for his work with RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS, SYSTEM OF A DOWN and SLAYER, for the first time. This collaboration marks the end of the quartet's 15-year relationship with producer Bob Rock, but Ulrich insists the split was drama free.

"We had a great time with Bob," he admits. "But it seemed that after 15 years it was time to try some different things and get a different perspective. As you get older you get set in your ways and get very fucking spoilt. It was important for as to not get stuck. Rick makes everything — he sees the big picture and has big ideas. It's working out great. We're excited hearing shit come together!"

METALLICA's as-yet-untitled album is expected in early 2007.

Still have the spark? Please, that album was shit. Tell Rick Rubin to start off by doubling James' vocals like Flemming did back in the day. It would be a good start, his voice is so fucking annoying. Personally, I think you have put out too many crap records to ever be taken seriously again. But if anyone can do it, maybe Rubin can. Or get Rasmussen back on the next one. Either way, I won't be buying that shit. Metallica sucked from the Black album on and in my belief will never be able to repair it. Enough said.

I hope the new stuff more old school. I would be cool if they still drop tune though.

is going to be in ensuring that the production is decent. The guitars should have much more in the way of presence / bite (bringing up treble combined with the proper type/level of distortion) - this means that the guitar sound from St. Anger (so muddy and incoherent that it was reminiscent of a grease rag from a homeless shelter's kitchen being drug through a Louisiana bog) must be exorcised before anything else worth hearing can be accomplished. Where's the traditional Mesa bite? Muddy tones only serve the purpose of hiding sloppiness (see Nu-Metal).

Only through a crisp, crunchy distortion may Metallica find salvation...

P.S. It wasn't really even necessary to mention that Lars has to stop playing on the Wal-Mart opening price point cookware set, but I might as well...

Actually, with the direction MetallicA was taking, St. Anger was a good thing. Their material was going in such a total wrong direction, getting worse and worse until it hit (St. Anger) rock bottom. Now, they see this and are working to correct it, hopefully. Canning Bob Rock and getting Rick Rubin involved as the first step. Maybe the next will be the 80's style thrash that made them?

I agree with you dude. I'm a fan of E-flat myself. Was exaggerating to make my point. St. Anger seemed like they got their feet stuck in the bottom end and forgot to listen to whether the songs were any good or not (with exceptions... there are some cool parts hidden here and there).

It used to be that the song would dictate the tuning, like a particularly cool riff might gain a little more oomph! from a drop D (or even C... I've used both on occasion) instead of just drop-D'ing it and one-fingering your way to a Grammy.

I used to defend this band left and right, because even though St Anger was crap, they at least did what THEY wanted to do... instead of what they were told to do.

In the interviews prior to St Anger, the album was marketed as a return to old-school Metallica. Now, because it didn't sell, they're calling it "different", and that the NEXT album will be old-school Metallica.

And if THAT one sucks, they'll call it "different", and hail the 2010 album as the REAL old-school Metallica album everyone's been asking for.

I hate to say it, but I was wrong. These guys ARE sell-outs, in every sense of the word. They can't even commit to how they hyped up St Anger before realizing no one liked it.

St Anger was hyped as old-school Metallica.

But it doesn't count anymore since no one liked it.

Very, very disappointing on Lars' part.

Unfortunately, since they haven't put out a decent record in, yes count them, 17 years, it's not going to be easy to believe that any of the crap that's been released is just an ugly bump in the road.

He did not produce it and did not want his name on it until it started selling big time; what a fucking bearded piece of shite.

They need to give the Metallicats as few tracks to work with as possible, ditch any thing that involves more than 4 layers, and remove all keyboards or string sections.

People here says that Lars is "hyping" up the album as "old school" just so it will sell more. WELL, why do you call Metallica sell outs when they dont release "Old school" albums like Master of puppets today? If Metallica would be sell outs they would release albums people want, like the old albums. I have always respected Metallica for doing what they want and not giving a shit what people think. THAT has always been Metallica for me. If Metallica wants to write another Master of puppets they will, but they will not follow all the ignorant, snotnosed kids on boards like this.

Whatever Metallica will do, there will always be dickheads calling Metallica sell outs or whatever. Why? Because some people are stupid and cant accept bands changing. Metallica will always write what they want, and they will not "give people what they want", because that is selling out.

"Sellouts" is a term used when a band tries to go after the radio accepted sound you total idiotic people who continue to say that selling out means that Metallica would write like the old shit. It does not mean that St. Anger was not a sellout album. Everything since after And Justice has been geared at the "commercial radio engine". How do you call that "Not selling out". Whatever. My opinion, If they continued to write like the Justice album, they would have sold just as many albums as the radio garbage because their style was accepted. Now they are only accepted by the "fake music listener who has no idea about metal". This means that your idea of music is what the radio tells you to listen to. Use your own brains and chose the real metal that is alive and kickin, and support the bands that play it. The world would be a better place???

I would imagine that I have an equal if not greater amount of experience in comparison to yours (in other words, none whatsoever). It appears that you missed the point. What I'm saying is that the production of St. Anger was so abysmal that it did not allow for anything else to shine through. I've always been a fan of Metallica - due to that reason, I think that due to the fact that they have talent, production / engineering should maximize the clarity of each particular instrument - this allows the end result (the overall mix) to convey the idea that they're trying to get across musically.

Excessively greasy or muddy tones too easily blend together; the guitars, bass, voices and some of the percussion blend together into a muddy warble. Hope this isn't excessively confusing to you, Beavis...

i agree the dropped-D has been overdone... i tune all my guitars to E-flat or D, makes it easier to bend the strings, and easier for the singer's vocal range

If you can't bend your strings tuned to A 440, you need lighter strings. If you use 10s use 9s instead. Not everyone can manage .011s it takes strong hands...and 22 years of practice.

If you're vocalist can't hang with A 440 tuning, you need a new vocalist.
My vocalist has no problem, sure, it helps she's a woman and has a higher range, but still.

now THAT would be the old school Metallica I was looking for.

I will then proceed to go to the bar, play this new one on the PA system there and wake EVERY sleeping drunk in the venue up and we can all drink beers and shots saying "METALLICA is back"

I am REALLY hoping this day comes but I'm not holding the gun in my hand and ready to shoot up the store out of excitement that it will.

As long as they can make a 65-70 minute album with shear kickass riffs and mind blowing solos and some real great OLD school Metallica lyrics I'll be extremely happy to call myself a Metallica fan again.

Rubin-Trujillo-Hefield-Ulrich & maybe Hammett

The team could be a MURDEROUSLY great metal club as long as Metallica sticks to its promise.

gayest band on the planet fuck you lar$ go sue some more people, and think of another really gay sound for the new metallisuck album, the trash can snare was hilarious!!!!!

As for the guitar tuning debate going on...
Standard or dropped b - d or any tuning doesnt fully show your talent. Just cause you play in dropped tuning doesnt mean you cant play guitar, although many gay bands do write some pathetic 4 chord songs. I have 6 guitars all tuned differently, because playing in the same tuning all the time is fucking gay, and lacks originality.

Here's my suggestions:
Let's get Jamez to sing like he did on the first three albums instead of this hillbilly Johnny Cash impression.

Second, let's make sure there's no psychologists anywhere near these guys asking them how they feel - that bleeds the rage. The stuff has to be kept under hot pressure to make it explosive.

Third, Rubin should hire somebody to really piss of Metallica, like some UFC champion or something to kick them all in the nads and hit them where it hurts. He should slash Lars' art, burn down Kirks' stupid gay dude ranch, slap a bottle of bacardi in James' hand and high five trujillo for staying sane this long.

For some reason I still hold on to the hope that there will be another Metallica album that is kick ass. I know its as useless as trying to piss on the sun but I still always have hope in the back of my head. What if they really did come out with a brutal album? Would the haters shut the fuck up? Would they keep whinning? WOuld there be a new breed of people who think it was too heavy?

I can garunteee one thing...... no matter what they put out...... someone on blabbermouth will shit on it.

In fact I can say to this day that there isn't a single band on blabbermouth that has not been criticized. SOMEONE always shits on a band. SHows the large diversity of taste but no matter how weak or brutal, underground or sold out, feminine or masculine, someone on the blabb will always shit on a band.

If you want to see if you'r band is good or bad you can get the brutally honest truth here. But no matter what ythere will be at least a few people that shit on it no matter what.

When metallica performed in toronto 2004 for ST anger Tour, 90 per cent of the audience were old school fans with avg age of 28-35 years old and wearing old school t shirts..When they performed blackened, disposable heroes and creeping death, people were yelling the backing vocals.

But when they performed Fratic and St Anger, JAmes had hard time getting the audience in Toronto to sing along.

Metallica should realize that their old fans regardless they like the new stuff or hate them still attend their shows. Metallica probably buried their teen fan base with going against Napster or Metallica is not trendy anymore for teens.

If they want to still fill arenas and sell more than St Anger did, they better put up a decent metal/rock album that will satisfy their fans of their early stuff.
If metallica puts up crap, their sales will be less than ST Anger and i am sure less concert attendance in N America and risk being considered irrelevant or low priority band by their record label.

I agree with you to an extent but as long as Metallica is an active band and they continue to tour even if this album is GREAT or a GREAT disappointment they will ALWAYS fill the seats in North American venues, with each old school fan that disappears it makes room for one of those who ain't ever heard a note off the classic four and jumped on after Black hit stores.

They are not the TOP selling act and CREAM of the crop as far as Heavy Metal goes for no particular reason other than that they continue to be one of the greatest live bands to play on this planet and not many sane fans of metal or music in general will ever safely argue it.

M"etallica are paper-thin poseurs, and if that is not obvious to everyone then follow the herd, you're just another sheep."

Paper Thin posers?,they were never really a thrash band. They were labeled a thrash band by the media in the beginning because nobody had a true clue what thrash was.

Exodus was releasing thrash,Testament was doing the same as was Slayer and so on but Metallica released Kill Em' All and then Ride the Lightning which by all accounts was not a real thrash album neither would the follow up to that which would be Master of Puppets. All of the albums had songs that were thrashy but Metallica was not a true thrash metal band nor did they ever try to be so I'd suggest you actually look up your facts before sounding off on an argument that has no base to it.

How can anyone have a good feeling about this? Lars said that they don't need to make another St. Anger, an album he reffered to as 55 minutes of brutality. Is the good feeling about the "old school" approach to songwriting, please remember it was this same "old school" approach that created Load, Re-Load, and every other pile of poo with the Metallica stamp on it.

This is pathetic, people move on with your lives. Either you like the direction the band has taken in the past 10 years or you don't. There is NO RETURN to the pre-Black album Metallica accept it.

About all this E tuning talk, Any tuning is cool but i play a 7 string tuned to B flat and it sounds as tight as can be. It's not the tuning that makes your sound saggy, it's your amp, cab, speakers, tubes, mics, mic placement, cables, string, pickups, picks, EQ, and picking that make your tone tight or not.

St. Anger would have turned a lot more heads if the production wasn't so shitty. Theres a lot of times when I listen to that album that Lars' drum sound would sound more, and I say this loosely, "brutal" if the snare sound wasn't so fucked up and if you could actual hear the parts where double bass is present and if they spent more time on getting the vocals right. I think it's a step in the right direction...

If you look at all that Rik Rubin has done its really incredible, I mean, he did Produce such classics as Reign in Blood, Danzig, and Blood Sugar, Sex, Magik. I don't know...I think I trust him to get this whole thing turned around. Not being sure how much he would contribute to songwriting, but thats not really the producers job...I think he is probably one of the most MUSICAL people in music.

Also love the comment about the vocal changes, thats probably the biggest thing, you'll never be able to have the classic metallica sound without that voice, and that voice my friends is long gone.

I seriously hope someone has this page bookmarked and reads this. They will never make another Master of Puppets so shut the fuck up. Remember that James blew out his vocal cords, so his voice will never be the same. And also try to remember that they are in their 40's now and that stuff is difficult to play. You guys are all bitter because they shut down Napster. That's all your anger is about. Get over yourselves. Metallica always will be one of the best bands around. If you think they suck, don't buy their next album. I plan on buying it, because I thought St.Anger would have been good, had the production been better. The sound on it was bad, thats all. When you hear the songs off that album live, they sound awesome. You won't believe it because you are all living in the 1980's still. As for Megadeath, I like them too, but their latest album was SHIT. They had 2 songs on there that rocked, but the rest were drab. All in all, you have to listen to the new song to see that this album is going to kick ass. The sound quality on the camcorder isn't that good but this is going to be a kick ass album.
