Exclusive: CANDLEMASS Frontman MESSIAH Quits Band
- Apr. 28, 2006
|
|
|
CANDLEMASS vocalist Messiah Marcolin contacted BLABBERMOUTH.NET today (April 28) to reveal that he has left the Swedish doomsters and that it's 100 percent definite that he will not return. "We could not agree on how to do the new album," he said, but would not further elaborate on his sudden departure.
Marcolin spent the early months of 2006 recovering from an infection of the vocal cords and was ordered by his doctor to wait until this summer before resuming singing.
CANDLEMASS recorded four new songs with producer Andy Sneap (NEVERMORE, ARCH ENEMY, MACHINE HEAD) in late February at the new Polar studios in Stockholm, Sweden. At the time, the group's bassist/songwriter Leif Edling said of the material, "The songs are pretty much in the same vein as the stuff on the [self-titled 2005] reunion album, maybe a bit darker."
CANDLEMASS won a Swedish "Grammy" award in February in the "Best Hard Rock" category, beating out the likes of HAMMERFALL, HARDCORE SUPERSTAR, MESHUGGAH and OPETH. The Swedish doom legends were honored for the "Candlemass" opus, which is available on Nuclear Blast Records. Five back-catalog items from the band — "Epicus Doomicus Metallicus", "Ancient Dreams", "Doomed for Live", "Nightfall", and "Essential Doom" — were issued in the U.S. via Candlelight in February.

This is a big blow to the band. The vocals made them utterly unique and Messiah is pretty much irreplacable.

bullshit on this one. This sounds like the prank of some little 14 year old, who knows that blabbermouth would run with something dumb like this. Dont you think that if Messiah were to quit, he'd tell people through some other media, other than blabbershit?

I saw Candlemass for the first time last year and every time Messiah sang my balls crept up into my stomach. Fucking amazing band, I wish them all the best but I just don't see Candlemass surviving without that voice. A sad day indeed.
Oh, and Curt Sibling, your sacrelige will not go unpunished.

Messiah was a great singer and a great live performer. he will be missed. However, Leif Edling is writing all the music and I think he has done a great job on every Candlemass album, even the ones without Messiah. This band is not gone because Messiah is.

he is like the 10th or so singer this year that doctors ordered to stop singing. What the hell? Why are all these singers getting "broke"? Not enough conditioning or what. BTW, it is sad cause the last album was indeed very good.

They broke up, reformed, broke up again, reformed again...I was so stoked about this new album. "Candlemass" was an awesome comeback record (and I'll provoke debate by saying it was at least as good as "Nightfall") and then they were recording with Andy Sneap for the latest...how fucking cool was that???
And now this...SHIT!!!
To all above who say Candlemass are overrated...well, you know what you can do.

A great band releases a killer album. It gets great reviews. The band then goes on successful tours. But, just when the band is getting things rolling when recording a new album, a band member decides, "I don't wanna do this anymore."
1. Into Eternity begins working on their follow-up to "Buried In Oblivion," when suddenly Adam, the band's touring drummer, quits. 2. Mercenary starts recording their follow-up to "11 Dreams" when suddenly Kral, the band's bassist and founding member, quits. 3. Candlemass begins the process of recording their follow-up to their brilliant, self-titled comeback album when suddenly Messiah Marcolin, quite possibly the best frontman Candlemass ever had, quits.
It's just a never-ending story here.
The two bands that I know of so far who have yet to have a line-up change are Susperia and Biomechanical.

...Leif is an atheist, whilst Messiah is a recent covert to beleiving in God. He does not write any lyrics by the way. Doom and indeed Metal has always had religious imagery and references in whether the band follow a religion or not.
Personally I thought Messiah has a great voice and a great stage presence as well. I hope its not the last we hear of him.
