KISS Guitarist TOMMY THAYER Defends His Right To Wear SPACEMAN Makeup

KISS's official web site has been updated with a new question-and-answer session with guitarist Tommy Thayer. It follows here in its entirety:
Q: Being a KISS fan yourself, what do you think of the "The Elder" album?
Tommy: "I was never a fan of 'The Elder'. To be honest, by the time 'Dynasty' and 'Unmasked' had came out I had lost interest in KISS. And then I was watching TV I guess around 1982 and I saw them on a late-night TV show called 'Fridays' playing 'The Oath' (from 'The Elder') and I thought, 'This is cool.' It was stripped down, Marshalls, black and silver outfits, raw and LIVE and ROCKIN'. The only downfall was they all had short hair, but that was OK, they were back on the right track! Next thing you know 'Creatures of the Night' comes out and that was great, I really like that album. It's funny, but in recent years I have a new appreciation for all of those late-'70s, early-'80s KISS albums."
Q: I know you've played many shows with KISS already but what do you think when you look around during a show and see Gene and Paul in makeup? It must be so strange to be up there playing with legends you grew up loving as fan?
Tommy: "Sure, there's something to that. When I was growing up in the early '70s, it was a magical time, my first concerts, learning to play guitar, discovering great bands like KISS and a slew of other great early-'70s hard rock, but that was over 30 years ago! A lot has happened since then. I've known Paul and Gene for over 20 years and a lot has transpired in those years. It's been a very gradual transition from the days of opening for KISS with my band BLACK 'N BLUE (in 1985) all the way up to being a member of KISS in 2006."
Q: Some fans will never accept you wearing Ace's makeup. What do you say to a fan who has that opinion?
Tommy: "If anybody else out there was asked to play guitar in KISS and wear the Spaceman makeup, but out of respect decided to decline the offer, I'd say you're the most dishonest person that ever walked the earth."
Q: What music do you listen to these days? What newer bands do you like?
Tommy: "Everything. I just downloaded about five days of music onto my iPod last week. New bands? How about AVENGED SEVENFOLD, they're gonna be huge."
Q: I read Peter said some negative things about you after the AEROSMITH tour was over. Do the comments bother you more as a KISS member or as his friend?
Tommy: "Peter's a great guy and I have nothing bad to say about him at all. My memories with Peter are all good, hanging out having fun, going out on the town for a great dinner. I remember a couple occasions, once in Montreal, one time in Prague and another in Paris checking out a fine French or Italian restaurant and doing some sight-seeing, shopping, having good times. So I was surprised what he said, but maybe he had a bad day or something. One rumor I want to dispel and set the record straight — I never got Peter spaghetti after a show, but many a night when we were heading back to the hotel, he asked me to call ahead and order him milk and cookies, which I did of course."

I saw him play in Columbus 2 years ago, and he plays Ace's shit better than Ace himself plays it. If Ace and Peter would have pulled their own weight and done what needed done, they would still be in Kiss. They only have themselves to blame, and there's no reason Kiss should have to stop because one guy can't stay sober and the other guy doesn't have the chops he used to.

Tommy Thayer is a nice guy, in a difficult position. Bruce Kulick wouldn't wear the Ace makeup, Tommy chose to.
Whenever I feel like dissing Tommy, I ask myself, "What would I do?"
I have to confess, that given the situation of getting up there, playing to millions, making millions of dollars playing some of the greatest rock music of our time with two of the biggest icons of rock AND my favourite drummer (Singer, not Criss), I would do it too.
Condemn him if you want, I don't blame you. But I would fucking do it too. I'd be up there in the Ace makeup doing it too.
Problem is, I play for shit.

I think he's saying that because millions of us would KILL to be able to do it. And as I said in my post above, I am one of them, admittedly. If I think about it, yeah, fuck I'd do it.
Thayer chose a poor way to word it, which in his business is never a wise thing to do.

Thayer sucks. He's the worst KISS guitarist they've ever had, and not because he wears ACE's makeup. It's because while he plays the riffs right - he plays them without feeling. Even Bruce knew you had to put something into it to have it really work for you and be effective. Thyer is like ACE light, and that just doesn't cut it. The last time KISS were good was in 1996 when they ahd to be good. Once they got rich again they slowly slid downhill.

You're right - millions of people would wear the makeup to get the gig. That doesn't answer my (and Bunghole's) question at all.
How is someone who refuses the gig (with its conditions) out of respect for Ace being dishonest?

I was very excited about the reunion tour, but let's face it. The band was a bit sloppy BECAUSE of Ace and Peter. I hate to admit it because
I love the original KISS lineup.
KISS now sounds better than ever. Fact.

There is only one ACE Frehley. If he wants to live Ace's life.. he is fucked.. Bruce Kullick is way better player than this guy and Black n' Blue really sucks ass..

They have always tried to be fresh and have a little controversy. And it works everytime they still have the trump card of Ace and or Peter in the sidelines. In the mean time they continue (in makeup and to decent crowds unlike when they unmasked) and they still make money and the casual fans stillsupport it, unlike the non make up years where only the die hards stood by them. For a band that is supposedly so well hated they seem to be doing okay. This one is better than that one, plays better than this one balh blah blah. WHO CARES? Its cartoon rock always has been and always will be. If you want to debate the musicallity aspect of rock join the Queensryche/Dream Theatre/Rush fan clubs.

Shouldn't someone hear their talent to know if someone is good? Shouldn't we, the people, judge how he plays on his own merit? If he's trying to homage Ace, then let it be a homage. Shouldn't we also hear how he can replicate Ace? Anybody could get on stage and sound like shit. But to homage Ace, That will take some talent of some sort. Does that have any merit? Not what kind of make-up someone wears on stage? How does the make-up or character make him better? Does he have put different make-up on and suddenly he can play guitar? That's the way you are coming across, to me.
I mean the way you talk the world should just stop! If someone decided not to work for a company any more. That person must stay and can never leave if they wanted to. You talk like the company shouldn't fill that position or replace the person because that person who left was the best, absolut perfection. He's not the original member... (I see someone standing on a pedistal with a halo and wings for some dumb reason) It's blasphmy!!! ACE has to stay in the band!!! It has to stay pure and whole... Because I say so, and that's the way it's going to be. And because the new guy isn't the original member, that makes him a scab. Do you know how many jobs open up every day, because it's to replace someone who wanted to leave? You would make a great Tyrant as a supervisor or King. Or a very bad religious bible thumper! Which ever is better, take your pick.
By the way, a scab, for those that don't know, is a person who crosses a picket line of a strike to do the work that needs to get done. And usally the workers are on strike because of unfair treatment on the job... Who, from the band, is protesting here or on strike!? Other than you? And you don't work for the company...Oddly enough.
