TOOL Ends Five-Year Drought With '10,000 Days'
- May 2, 2006
|
|
|
Launch Radio Networks has issued the following report: Today (Tuesday, May 2) is a big day for TOOL as the band releases its first album in five years, called "10,000 Days", and begins a North American tour in Seattle, Washington. The group's first opportunity to play some new material live came this past Sunday (April 30) at the Coachella festival. Drummer Danny Carey told Launch that the band usually figures out its new songs on the fly. "We've never been fortunate enough to perform our material live before we recorded it, so some of the songs we almost actually had to learn how to play live, you know, before we went out, and that was interesting," he said. "It always is, though. We've kind of stuck to the similar processes along the way, so we're used to it."
TOOL's performance on Sunday was the quartet's first U.S. show in four years and first Coachella appearance since playing at the debut festival in 1999.
The group's jam-heavy set featured a dose of tunes from "10,000 Days" in addition to favorites like "Stinkfist", "Aenima" and "Sober".
TOOL's 15-date mini-tour will finish up on May 22 in Boston. Singer Maynard James Keenan posted a message at the band's web site last week promising that the group would be back in the fall for fans who didn't get tickets to this month's shows.

10,000 days between this album and the last? I doubt that. I believe the title comes from Maynard's mother. Not the days between albums. I don't think 365.242375 or a day less or more in the 300 range would ever come out 10,000 over a five year period. It would be in 1,800 range. Now I am prone to being mathmatically retarded, and if someone would like to correct me I would appreciate any form of clarification on this.

10,000 Days is 27+ years, obviously nothing to do with the time between records, or Maynard's mother.
If you listen to the lyrics of 10,000 days. it implies what I would think, some kind of war. But since I've only heard the album once this morning, out of respect for TOOL, I'll study it further
And TOOL better be coming back in the Fall. Riots started in Toronto cuz tickets went so fast

Coming together every few or 5 years to put out a record keeps them from getting stale and oversaturated with their fans as well as relieving the burnout factor. Actually not a APC (Tool, Jr) comes across as mundane and uninspiring. Can't figure it out. Even went to an APC show and was bored out of my skull. However, Tool just has this magic that is undeniable. 10K Days is just so deep. One pass so far but there is so much going on and is so thick, it all might make sense after several more passes. Love the freaky packaging too, real psychedelic but could give you a headache if you don't do it right.

it took me a little longer to warm up to this album, but its definatly good. Tool is one of the few bands that can keep their sound, but make every album it's own without rehashing the same shit. that in my book makes a band great. also Maynard keeps the vocals fresh once again and Danny Carey seals his status as a drum god.
on the song 10,000 days he mentions his mother's name and ive even read in interviews that he wrote it for his mother. oh wait i forgot TubbusMaximus you seem to know all his intentions by listening to the song once.
wasn't crazy about the cover art for this one, but the inside art was a very cool treat.
2006 has been a kickass year for music.

I am going to make the following statement and expect someone to fire back. If you are aware of what real music is, then you know Tool is the originator. Their sound needs no explanation and they don't need to try. What are they? Metal? no. Rock? no. Thrash/Speed/Grind/Metalcore/Nu-Metal/Fashioncore/Hardcore or any other label slapped on music these days? No. They are FUCKING TOOL and they will always be FUCKING TOOL. They will continue to do whatever they want, whenever they want, to whoever the want. Instead of labeling your music, listen to it for the value. Fuck your T-Shirts and patches, little fashion fairies only good for ruining the scene.

I think people are a little too hard on Tool. most of the skeptics don't really understand them or what they're trying to accomplish with their music. they're the same idiots that want Tool to keep making Undertow over and over again. I have alot of respect for bands that continue to keep challenging themselves by evolving with each album. come on, you neandrethals. there's alot more to good music than just the heavy parts. to all the people that gave 10,000 Days bad reviews: here's what you should do... listen to it again, and again, and again.

My friend Colleen produced a joint to pass the time with, but you said "hold on a sec," pulled a huge joint out of your backpack, and told us it was a "blunt." Neither Colleen nor I had never heard of a blunt until that day.

The song is about his Mom, you're either lying about hearing it or didn't even listen to the lyrics. She was paralyzed from a stroke when she was 27 and Maynard was 11 and she died in 203, roughly 10,000 Days later. 10,000 Days old to 10,000 Days of suffering. Listen to it again.

The comments of another Tool fan with a misplaced superiority complex. You seem to have it in your heads that just because its long then its good? Is is that it?
Its not the size, its how you use it. Dream Theater, Opeth, and other bands who frequent the long-from song style know how to use it. Tool songs are long for the sake of being long, not for the sake of music.

I mean this, I have NEVER liked these dudes. Even the NAME is stupid. The singer runs a vinyard up the road from where I live. Apparently his heart is in wine, not music. His music is not what folks want to hear. RATT and other bands like BLS and Van Halen are the heart and soul of music. Tool just has scary videos and strange words. SOBER was the first song I heard. It is NOTHING compared to great songs like ICARUS DREAM SUITE by Yngwie Malmsteen. OIL is 74 dollars a barrell and TOOL has $259 tickets to the show. Obviously MAYNARD is a President BUSH FAN!!

How are you, my good buddy? Nice to see you again.
To answer your question, I am actually distantly related to Maynard. He's my sister's husband's grandmother's cousin's neighbor's teacher's nephew.
True story. He even sang "Stinkfist" at our last family reunion. Fucking badass.

Tool is the shit. I saw their live show in California and they were aww inspiring.
The song I've heard on the radio does closely resemble some of their old shit, but what the fuck do you think is going to happen when you put out like 6 albums in the same key with the same tuning-you're playing the same notes in a different order.
I don't give a fuck if it is EXACTLY like their old shit. In fact, I think I'll go buy another copy of Ainema (J/K). But seriously, if you're a fan of Tool then you have to go and get the album. I'm there after work today.
Oah yah, Benjamin III, you need to go and get a myspace page because you are like me and enjoy conversation on the net a lot. Check my band out at myspace.com/digitalcancer

I just checked that shit out, General Ceel really is a little bitch, and a fucking troll. I can understand people's extreme love for bands, but extreme hate for bands just doesn't make sense, just don't listen. And I've always wondered how one who hates a particular band so much acts like they are so familiar with the sound of that band. Do people torture themselves by listening and analyzing a band that they hate? How well are you able to criticize a band if you have barely heard them?

regarding this being the gap between last album and this album, I think it works out to 10,000 days if you figure it out in dog years. Love how quick everybody bashes a group that doesn't put out the same album over and over. Give it a chance, stretch a bit. I just got it today. I have to admit it wasn't exactly what I expected or wanted, but I'm willing to take the journey with the group, WTF.

I've heard this album today. I've listened to it maybe 5 times in the raw... it's that good.
I recommend it to you. Forget the trends - it's just good music, very meditative and mature.
This album made me interested in their back catalogue. I mean, I've heard them before but wasn't really impressed. I always thought that Tool was not heavy enough for me. Well, guess what - this album kicks ass. Smart, heavy and fun to listen to. Undoubtedly Metal.

I like speed (generally). From what I've heard of Tool, they were never fast enough for me.
Still, I don't MIND them. The same way I don't mind death metal. Please don't confuse my affinity for speed with a fondness for death metal-type speed. Thrash and power metal speed usually cures what ails me.

I understand perfectly.
I mostly listened to Speed and Power Metal in my teens and early twenties, and I still do as you know, but I guess with age come a certain ability to comprehend music better. Or maybe it's not it, but the fact that I spent couple of years in the recording studio and that I’ve listened to tens of thousands albums over the years and my ears got trained to distinguish quality in most styles of music and styles.
If you will have a chance - just listen to 10 000 nights - you might like it. It's pretty technical, and I know you like the dramatic stuff! :-)

i like knifehitmaster's bill up there. if we reform The Crown and add them in there somewhere, too....that'd just be godly. if a bill like that ever came to Michigan and i was able to get a ticket to something like that...i'd probably shit myself.
and if anyone hasn't noticed..the whole thing by _TEAPOT_ is his thing, kinda like my Meshuggah thing, and T-Boner.com's ramblings, and the signature posts by a bunch of others and so on....if you don't get that that's his own personal over-the-top style...relax.
for the record _TEAPOT_...i'm on your side, it kicks ass, it's awesome. keep it up. things are tending to get a little stale on this site at times anymore, your postings are a shot in the arm on this site. keep it up, and don't get banned, man!
...and also, i haven't heard the new Tool yet. i won't be able to get it for about a week or so, don't have the time to get it this week with finals and some good friend's graduating from college and so on...money needs to go elsewhere, like booze to celebrate and all that good shit.....maybe i'll cash a bunch of cans and bottles after the weekend and pick it up before i start my summer job.

Is half kick ass "rockin" and half sort of experiMENTAL ranting, seemingly going nowhere, the opening song "Vicarious" almost sounds just like...................
You've heard it already, and It's true, This stuff is VERY derivative of earlier material.
I find it hard to take in the whole CD as one composition, rather it seems this release is more fragmented than anything else, kinda like two different personalities.
Don't fuckin get you're shit in a bunch cuz I said so, Tool IS overrated in only the fact that the die hards will always rate every Tool release higher because iy's TOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

i would go as far as saying that thats the masterpiece for this album. all other tool albums have that one great epic song that defines the feel for the album. lateralus had parabol/parabola and aenima had eulogy. 10,000 is a great album and thats my favorite song of the album, and im listening to it right now. fantastic packaging to, the art's incredible but the glasses are kind of annoying after a while, but still a great release... the missing link between aenima and lateralus

SameInTheEnd...Overall...this may not be everyone's favorite Tool album. But musically, this is their best release ever. The most complicated muisc of theirs i have ever heard. I think i remember some guy posting back on one of the other Tool news updates saying something like..."Any good musician can imitate Tool". That's a load of shit. Some songs aren't hard to imitate...bur overall I don't believe ANYONE can imitate that band. They are genius's in what they do. Lyrics, vocals and the music. I'm 100% convinced this is their best release musically. If you disagree...that's cool but...i'm convinced.
