BLACK SABBATH's 'Iron Man' Tops VH1 List As the Greatest Metal Song of All Time - May 3, 2006
BLACK SABBATH's "Iron Man" reigns as the #1 song in the definitive metal count down "40 Greatest Metal Songs" airing on VH1. The countdown, which began Monday, May 1 will culminate on Thursday, May 4 at 11 p.m., with the top ten songs of all time. Hosted by Sebastian Bach (who can be seen on VH1's "SuperGroup" beginning May 21 at 10 p.m.), "40 Greatest Metal Songs" kicks off its metal month and brings you the 40 most notable metal songs of all time in four rockin' half hour episodes. Whether epic, political, scary or downright silly, these tunes have one thing in common: they will rock your friggin' socks off.

Each half-hour episode of "40 Greatest Metal Songs" will feature VH1's panel of rock scholars and metal all-stars like Lars Ulrich, Scott Ian, Jerry Cantrell, Ronnie James Dio, Toni Iommi, Dave Mustaine, Lemmy Kilmister, David Draiman of DISTURBED, Frank Bello, Riki Rachtman, Jacoby Shaddix of PAPA ROACH, Evan Seinfeld of BIOHAZARD, Tera Patrick, Chris Jericho, Doro Pesch, Dee Snider and many more who will weigh in on this definitive list of the greatest metal music the world has ever known. ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian steps up to the metal month plate by writing and recording the show's original theme music, which is a first in VH1 history. Never before has an artist written and recorded the music for a VH1 show that they also appear in.

The top 10 greatest metal songs of all time are:

01. BLACK SABBATH - "Iron Man" (1971)
02. GUNS N' ROSES - "Welcome to the Jungle" (1987)
03. METALLICA - "Master of Puppets" (1986)
04. AC/DC - "Back in Black" (1980)
05. JUDAS PRIEST - "You've Got Another Thing Coming" (1982)
06. KISS - 'Detroit Rock City" (1976)
07. IRON MAIDEN - "The Number of the Beast" (1982)
08. SLAYER - 'Raining Blood" (1986)
09. OZZY OSBOURNE - "Crazy Train" (1980)
10. MOTÖRHEAD - "Ace Of Spades" (1980)

Children Of The Grave - that's the ultimate, metal, Sabbath song...IMHO

The rest aren't that bad - although this is VH1 we're talkin' about here, I'm not surprised at that list. If I could make my own it would be:

Slayer - Reign In Blood
Metallica - Damage Inc.
Bolt Thrower - Into The Eye Of Terror
Massacre - Dawn Of Eternity
Sodom - Agent Orange
Onslaught - Death Metal
Incubus - Serpent Temptation
Entombed - Revel In Flesh
Sepultura - Subtraction
Nocturnus - BC/AD

Honorable mention:

Megadeth - Hook In Mouth
Sacred Reich - Surf Nicaragua
Annihilator - Alice In Hell
Ministry - One Fix
Dark Angel - Death Is Certain (Life Is Not)
Testament - Over The Wall
Exodus - Til Death Do Us Part
Death - Zombie Ritual

I really could go on and on with this...

'Welcome to the Jungle' and 'Back in Black' are not metal songs to me. Those bands are hard rock bands that appeal to a lot of metal fans. I like about four GNR songs otherwise they don't do much for me but AC/DC has classics up the wazoo. Kiss has some metal songs but are not a metal band either. "Detroit Rock City' is borderline metal to my ears. The intro riff is metal, the guitar and drum tone and beat are metal, the verses and chorus are more hard rock. The interlude melody is more characteristic of metal. These are just my observations when putting under a microscope. It's still a good song.

VH1 does not have much credibility regarding metal but this is good list for having been compiled by metal-hating weasels.

The king of overrated songs on this list is 'Number of the Beast'. They only included that because of the satanism controversy at the time. That song wouldn't even be in the Maiden top 20. In fact, it's the worst song on that album or tied with '22 Acacia Avenue'. Ironically, I think the greatest metal song of all time is "Hallowed Be Thy Name".

There will never be a consensus on THE Top Ten best Metal songs of all time. Make up your own, be happy with it and be able to intelligently defend your list. Then and only then will your Top Tep be relevant. This Top Ten list can only be defended by a vote of people who may or may not be qualified to pick a top ten list and since some of them aren't, this is all done in the name of ratings which translates to $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

All of this that you say is "NOT METAL".... what classifies Metal? If Paranoid is a Metal song, so is Welcome to the Jungle. WTTJ is heavier than Paranoid, yet it's "not metal?"

So what is Metal, you geniuses? Does it HAVE to have dark, often Satan inspired lyrics? Does it have to talk about death, destruction or disembowelment? To me, Metal is heavy guitars, pounding bass, awesome drums, meaningful lyrics that influence thought.

I don't think this episode has aired yet, so thanks for ruining it. Truthfully, I am not surprised of the top 10 songs. Although, they are all great some of them are so overplayed and overrated especially Crazy Train...if I hear it one more time I'm going to slit my wrist. I will say that every metal or non-metal fan knows these songs in one form or another; I guess that is the point of the show. You know what is so funny back in the day when some of these songs first came out. People condemned them and thought of these songs as noise or garbage. I grew up and live in Brooklyn N.Y. and we have people here that we call guido's, and they hated metal in those days and now they embrace it cause Ozzy's cool and funny...thanks Mtv.

For the people who may not know what a Guido is let me enlighten you. A Guido or Guidette is a person who listens to dance, freestyle or techno music and is usually Italian, Greek or Irish. They usually drive their fathers luxury car with the bass turned up to 10 at all hours of the night. They were thick gold chains, gold rings, Jesus tattoos, tight shirts and think they are part of the mob. Guidettes are real high maintenance if you don't work out (take steroids), drive a BMW and buy them gifts every other day you have no shot. These girls are daddy's little princess and get whatever they want. Most of them have rocks for brains and are clueless about social and current events...they pretty much live in a bubble. They get their nails and hair done EVERY week so they look good drinking their Martini's at the dance club. There is a lot more about these people but that pretty much sums it up. However, do you know what is worse than a Guido? A Metal Guido...oh they exist.

You have to think of the songs in terms of popularity on a worldwide scale and songs fans of other music can most get into as well.

The greatest song should be one that everybody knows, not like something off At The Gates- Slaughter of the Soull or something like that(although that is a great cd and at the gates are cool)

I agree with the list except....
01. BLACK SABBATH - "Iron Man" (1971) (too overrated get sabbath bloody sabbath on here or something)
02. GUNS N' ROSES - "Welcome to the Jungle" (1987) Should be more like 10 on the list)

Have you ever heard Vinnie and Dimebag in an interview they always praise Priest and Maiden and always Kiss as influences...they're at-least in their late 30's who else would they mention. Think about it, those 2 songs are the very first songs almost everyone learns playing when they first pick up a guitar.

Atleast when they set the standard with iron man first you just can't leave out smoke on the water as second.

VH1 is guilty of a rather stupid inconsistancy.
When I saw their special on the most Awesomely Bad metal songs of all time, i often found myself thinking "WTF? That song should be on a list of BEST metal songs of all time!"
Well, low and behold, it actually happened. Balls to the Wall is on BOTH countdowns. What the fuck, VH1? What the fuck? Make up your damn mind. Better yet, take it off the "bad" countdown, because Balls to the Wall pwns!

Oh man you're so metal dude!!!!
Yet you listen to corporate country rock like tallica!

So AC/DC is considered metal but Guns 'n roses isn't?
What a load of crap!

Where's "Shout at the devil" btw?

I think everyone has to realize that these songs were considered metal at the time of their release. Also just because you're sick of a song from hearing it too many times doesn't make it a bad song or overrated.

We are still hearing these songs today which says they stood the test of time. For a list like this the songs have to have been heard by most people and serve to influence others.

I think Iron Man is a great choice for #1 as it has influenced metal more than any of their other songs(although it also is not my favourite song of theirs).

...blabbermouth really is a circus full of idiots eh...

Anyway, while Sabbath may deserve the #1 spot, Iron Man doesn't. I'd pick Paranoid since that song was more influential. And Enter Sandman rather than MOP since Sandman made more metalheads than MOP ever did (even if MOP is a much much better song altogether)...and kick GnR out of that top 3 please!

Fair enough but, as you say, people are netitled to their own opinions, so dont knock people that like pop, just because you dont like it. There's no reason why we shouldnt have "Top Whatever" polls like this for metal, although i do agree that most of this particular list is shite (as much as i love Black sabbath, there are much better songs than Iron Man, and ethe less said about Guns n Roses the better)
