GODSMACK Frontman Gets Defensive Over Band's Alleged 'Pro-Military' Stance
- May 4, 2006
|
|
Jay Babcock of Arthur magazine conducted an interview with GODSMACK frontman Sully Erna on Monday, May 1. What follows is a transcript of the conversation, as posted on the Arthur web site: Arthur: Alright, let me get the tape rolling here. How are you doing? Sully: "I'm good! Arthur: How was the "Jimmy Kimmel" show on Friday? you were outside playing, right? Sully: "Yeah, it's always cool to do that because it's so set up for musicians, you know?! Big stage, live crowd. It's not so like indoors with a camera rehearsals. It's a lot easier." Arthur: Yeah. So you got to be back out in front of your fans. Sully: "Yeah. It was good. It was fun." Arthur: What kind of people listen to your music, do you think? Sully: "Ummm… I've seen em range as young as 8 and as old as 68. [chuckles]" Arthur: Yup. Sully: "So it's..." Arthur: Well, you've seen a lot more of 'em than I have, and I'm trying to get an idea of what it feels like when you're out there — to you, on the stage. Do you think like there's a lot of teenagers in the audience? A lot of guys in their 20s? Chicks? Sully: "Ah, you know—" Arthur: Is it a dude audience? Sully: "I would say, if I had to guess what our age group is, it's probably between …18 and 40." Arthur: Oh, yeah? Sully: "I would have to say that's kind of where we're at, maybe more, majority would be 18-30? But I, we definitely, we recruited a lot of new fans off of that acoustic record—" Arthur: That did it, huh? Sully: "—an older audience. And this record seems to be drawing in a different kind of audience as well, so. You know we're just trying to continue to expand and not have a ceiling over our heads." Arthur: Right. You guys are still having a good time making music after all these years…? Sully: "Of course. We're musicians, that's what we do. It may not always be great music, but we love making it! [laughs]" Arthur: 'Cause music has a power…? Sully: "Mmm hmm. It's a universal language." Arthur: So what you say with it, and what you do with it, has an effect…? Sully: "Of course." Arthur: Right? Sully: "Of course." Arthur: So I notice you guys have been really involved with promoting the military. Sully: "Well, they actually came to us, believe it or not. Somebody in the Navy loves this band, because they used 'Awake' for three years and then they came to us and re-upped the contract for another three years for 'Sick of Life'. So, I don't know. They just feel like that music, [laughs] someone in that place thinks that the music is very motivating for recruit commercials I guess. And hey, I'm an American boy so it's not… I'm proud of it." Arthur: You're proud of recruiting your fans into the military? Sully: "Well, no. [laughs, then jokingly] Don't be turning my fucking words around, you!" Arthur: Well, tell me what you mean. You said your music is powerful, it's got an effect, like you said, and you're letting the military use it. The military, who are they recruiting? 18 to 30-year olds, right? Sully: "I guess… I don't know what their recruit age is. I know it's at least 18." Arthur: Yeah, they go down in to the high schools now. Sully: "My thing is… Listen, here's my thing with the military. I'm not saying our government is perfect. Because I know that we make some mistakes and we do shitty things BUT, BUT. You wouldn't have your job, and we wouldn't have our lives, if we weren't out there protecting this country so we could lead a free life. So there's kind of a ying and a yang to that. Sometimes it's not always the best choices that we make, or we stick our noses in other people's shit, but at the same time, we protect this place enough that we're able to like pursue careers and do what a lot of people in other countries aren't able to do. They're kind of picked and they're chosen to be whatever they become… I'm, I'm, I'm proud to be an American, I'll tell you that." Arthur: So your country, right or wrong? Sully: "Uh, no. Not right or wrong. But I'm proud to be an American. I love my country. I've seen the depressions and how people live in other countries and how they're told what to be, and they don't have the choices that we have. I do love that about our country. So, you know… And I actually sympathize with a lot of the soliders, and the military in general, that are trained to go out and protect FOR us, and what they have to go through, it's really kind of shitty in a sense that these young kids have to go over there and die, sometimes, for something that isn't our fucking problem. And that kind of sucks. So what I have to do is at least support them, because they don't have the choice that we do." Arthur: They don't have the choice because…? Sully: "Because they've decided to fight for our country." Arthur: And they decided to do that because…? Sully: "[laughs]…" Arthur: …of your song…? Sully: "Aw, come on. It's not like that." Arthur: Well, I have a quote from you here: "We've always been supportive of our country and our President, whereas a lot of people I thought" — and you said this in 2003 to MTV News, you said — "a lot of people I thought lashed out pretty quickly at what we did and i thought the government did everything pretty cleanly and publicly as possible." Sully: "Yeah…?" Arthur: Well, what are you talking about? Sully: "That was my opinion at the time. The whole war thing, and trying to keep us up to date like… If you remember, back in other wars, we didn't have the opportunity to follow it through the media, and CNN, and the news — live updates and that kind of thing. And I thought that for the most part you know we were allowed to follow it as best we could through the media sources that were feeding us information." Arthur: [incredulous] You didn't think the media was being controlled by the military?!? Sully: "Well, it could be. I don't know." Arthur: You didn't look into it? Sully: "Listen. Are you a fucking government expert?" Arthur: I'm not telling people to go join the military and then not knowing what the military is doing. Sully: "I don't tell people to go join the military!!" Arthur: You don't think using your songs — the power of your music, which you were talking about — has an effect on the people that hear it when it goes with the visuals that the best P.R. people in the world use?! Sully: "Oh man, are you like one of those guys that agrees with some kid that fuckin' tied a noose around his neck because JUDAS PRIEST lyrics told him to? Arthur: You were telling me how powerful your music was, and what age the people are that listen to it. And you must have thought, "Well the Navy sure thought it was useful." So you tell me. Sully: "Hey, listen... The Navy thought…. It's the same reason why wrestlers work out to the music, and extreme motorcross riders listen to the music and do what they do. It's ENERGETIC music. It's very ATHLETIC. People feel that they get an adrenaline rush out of it or whatever, so, it goes with whatever's an extreme situation. But I doubt very seriously that a kid is going to join the Marines or the U.S. Navy because he heard GODSMACK as the underlying bed music in the commercial. They're gonna go and join the Navy because they want to jump out of helicopters and fuckin' shoot people! Or protect the country or whatever it is, and look at the cool infra-red goggles." Arthur: You said to MTV, "We're not a very political band but we're supportive of the U.S. military and how they approach things." Sully: "Listen. Someone turned that around. I never said 'and how they approach things.'" Arthur: Okay. So that's a misquote. Or something. Sully: "Wow, what—" Arthur: What about this: In 2003 you did a show that started with video footage of Apache helicopters honing in on a desert target interspersed with the words "We Will Prevail/Stronger Than Them All.” Sully: "Say that again?" Arthur: I'm reading from a Boston Globe review of a show you did at the Tweeter Center. Sully: "Yeah." Arthur: In front of 13,000 people on May 22, 2003. Sully: "Yeah, but tell me what it said again." Arthur: Yes sir. It said, " GODSMACK's ferociously high-energy 90-minute set started with video footage of Apache helicopters honing in on a desert target, interspersed with the words 'We Will Prevail/Stronger Than Them All.'" Sully: "Yeah…?" Arthur: So you're using military imagery with your music at your concerts? Sully: "First of all, it was a COMPUTER image, a computer-animated helicopter that didn't… There was no scene of a desert in there. It was a helicopter that rose up from the screen and scanned the audience. It was an EFFECT. And then it shot out missiles that hit the stage." Arthur: Uh huh… Sully: "Because the intro to 'Straight out of Line' has the sounds of like, a war thing going on." Arthur: Oh, I see. So it's just sort of a concept thing. [pause] Well, you've done a lot to help out the guys who are in the military, who are stuck there now. Whether they chose to be there or they got hoodwinked into being there, for whatever reason, they're in the military. And they're doing their job. You guys did a show for them at Camp Pendleton— Sully: "Yup." Arthur: —called "Rockin' the Corps". And so you've been doing a lot of benefit shows— Sully: "[interrupting] Well, like I said... Listen, you know, there's a lot of young kids that die for our country, man, and they don't have the choice once they're in there." Arthur: That's right. Sully: "So I just feel... well, you know, whatever we can do to say 'Thank you for protecting our country' is what we try to do. I'm not trying to make this a big political issue." Arthur: Okay. have you done anything to prevent people from joining the military? Sully: "No." Arthur: To maybe educate them as to what's in store for them? Sully: "I don't have enough education in the military to educate them in anything." Arthur: Would you let your music be used for anti-military recruiting advertisements? Sully: "I don't know, I'd have to see what that was about." Arthur: But you'd be open to it? Sully: "We're open to whatever, as long as it's not a Maybelline commercial." Arthur: [laughs] Maybelline's more offensive than the military…? Sully: "No. That doesn't quite go with what we do. Arthur: But the military does?!? Sully: "Listen. Where are we going with this thing? Is this interview about the government?" Arthur: Well, I've never seen such a pro-military— Sully: "Sounds like this is a personal attack or whatever." Arthur: Well, I've never seen such a pro-military band as you guys. Sully: "But we're not! I think [chuckling] you're making us out to be a little bit more. When we're asked about something, we just answer the question. We don't go spend 23 hours out of our day supporting the military and what they do." Arthur: Uh hmm. Sully: "We just simply, an opportunity came up, they wanted to use some music for a recruit commercial. What are we gonna say, no?" Arthur: Yeah. how hard is it to say "no?" Sully: "Why would we, though?!?" Arthur: Because— Sully: "Is it because you don't feel the same way about the government that we do, makes you right and us wrong?" Arthur: Yeah. What do you feel about the government? Tell me what— Sully: "Aw, that's crazy, man! That's just an OPINION." Arthur: I can back my opinion up from here to tomorrow if you would like to talk to me all day long. Sully: "Well, obviously you've done a lot of research and you've—" Arthur: That's right, because— Sully: "—got a different opinion. We don't know that stuff that you know, so—" Arthur: Why don't you do some research before you get involved with these sorts of things? You're talking about young kids' lives. You're talking about kids— Sully: "[yelling] Would you rather not have us be protected so they can come and overrun our country?!?" Arthur: Do you know what a "fool's errand" is? Sully: "I'm asking you a question!" Arthur: No one is threatening— Sully: "Would you rather us not be protected?!?" Arthur: You know what I'd like, Sully? A department of defense. Not a department of offense that attacks other countries — sovereign nations — who do things in a different way than us, who we have no right to go over and invade and change their governments. Would we want someone else to do that to us?" Sully: "I'm not saying—" Arthur: How hard is that to think about? Sully: "I'm not saying that we were right on every war that we've created. I know that we've been damn wrong at times about stuff—" Arthur: When have we been wrong? Sully: "[yelling] but they have also been wrong too!" Arthur: When have— Sully: "I don't trust someone like fuckin' Saddam and Osama to come in here and try to control—" Arthur: [incredulous] When did Saddam try to come in here and control our country? Sully: "Dude, [yelling] WHY DON'T YOU GO LIVE IN IRAQ THEN IF YOU HAVE SUCH A PROBLEM WITH AMERICA? Why are you here? Arthur: Why am I here?!? This is the top country in the world, my friend! Sully: "Well, why do you think so? Because it's PROTECTED." Arthur: No, it's not because it's— Sully: "—ruled our country." Arthur: No one is attacking us, my friend, certainly not Iraq. Every first world nation suffers terrorist attacks. Get used to it. Sully: "I am used to it. I don't have a problem—" Arthur: Get used to it. Sully: "[laughs] Sounds like you do." Arthur: You're the one that's saying it's alright to not know about stuff and then to send other people to die in our name. Sully: "I never said that! Don't put fuckin' words in my mouth." Arthur: I've got it on tape, bro. Sully: "You've got in on tape, bro?!?" Arthur: Yeah. Sully: "You got me saying it's okay for us to attack other countries?" Arthur: I got you on tape saying they're protecting us by attacking, by going over there and taking out people. Sully: "Listen, don't fuckin' turn my words around to make it to what you want it to be! That's not what I meant and you know that." Arthur: Okay, I'm sorry, then tell me what you meant. Sully: "Listen, I'm not gonna get into a political fuckin' conversation with you. This was supposed to be an interview about the band. Where is this going?" Arthur: We're talking about the power of your music and what you're using it for?" Sully: "What is this for anyway? Who are you working with? Arthur: I'm working for my own magazine, my friend. Sully: "What's it called?" Arthur: [laughing in disbelief] What do you mean, what's it called? Are you serious? Sully: "Yeah, what's the magazine called?" Arthur: It's called Arthur magazine. You guys are the ones that set this up. Sully: "Hey, I was just told to do press today, man." Arthur: Hey, man, you guys— Sully: "I got a checklist in front of me, and I don't have time for a lot of this bullshit." Arthur: Oh, yeah? Sully: "So write whatever the fuck you wanna write, because your magazine obviously is that popular." Arthur: It's doing pretty good— Sully: "Yeah I'm sure it is. All three thousand copies of it—" Arthur: On our own, without any corporate support. Sully: "I wish you the best of—… Why would you waste your time calling a band like us when you don't even give a fuck?!?" Arthur: I certainly do give a fuck. 'Cause you know what? Sully: "What is this about?!?" Arthur: Because listen, man! You know, there's 2,800 people, my brothers and sisters, have died over in Iraq? Sully: "Yeah?" Arthur: You know 30,000 Iraqi humans who never did shit to us have died because of the attacks we've made over there? Sully: "[in disbelief] And that's GODSMACK's fault?" Arthur: Did you know that 78% of women in the military report cases of sexual harassment? Sully: "[sarcastic] And that's GODSMACK's fault. Arthur: No, man— Sully: "[sarcastic] That has to do with our new record." Arthur: Okay, let's talk about your new record. Sully: "I can't believe this. This is [inaudible]" Arthur: Let's talk about that new record, my friend. Sully: "Get a life." [hangs up]

Jay Babcock is a douchenozzle. What an asshole. He turns what is supposed to be an interview about the band and their music into his own political agenda. Lame.
And Godsmack owns.

I think Arthur brought up a very valid point that Godsmack went and tossed their songs in a commercial of importance without even looking at what their music was gonna be associated with.
All Sully had to say was that they did it for the cash.

What the fuck was BabCOCK's problem?
I'm not even a fan of GodSmack, but Sully got grilled for no reason.
I didn't know that supporting our military and our troops makes you an advocate for invading every country we don't like.
This jackass gives credence to Republicans when they say that there is a faction of the Democratic Party who don't support our troops and hate America.
Anybody who joins the military these days knows EXACTLY what they are getting into. We've been at war for almost five years now.
If you have no clue what is going on in the world these days, then you have no business joining the military in the first place.

The name says it all. As much as I was against the war even before it started, this is still a free country; if Godsmack wants to support the war or be against it, it's their choice.
In fact, if by lending their song to military recruitment commercials they're showing their support, it's probably as understated as you can get. Aside from this, I don't think that they've ever really said much else about this subject; unlike other celebrities, they haven't been obnoxious about their position.
Jay Babcock is a total cock!!

That was the best story I've ever read on Blabbermouth. It had it all: a protagonist, an antagonist, an agenda, a theme, a narrative, dramatic tension, conflicting opinions, human nature/ignorance, zero objectivity...
In other words, it wasn't journalism. Entertaining though. I think Godsmack suck and Sully is an idiot, but I'd hate it if that guy went after somebody I like that way. There's no way to win in a situation like that:
Arthur: Tom Araya, in your song "War Ensemble" you sing "Sport the war, war support, The sport is war, total war." So you think supporting sports wars is totally a game?
Tom: Uh, what?

"-Iraq has nothing to do with them attacking us, you fuckin retarded brainwashed asshole."
What the fuck are you talking about? We were worried about them having "Weapons of Mass Destruction" and we were doing a "preemptive strike." Preemptive means that you're acting first, in self-defense. That means that we were anticipating Iraq attacking us. Also, it's a lot more than 30,000 Iraqi civilians that have died, but even just using the government total (30,000) is a pretty big number. How many years was Saddam in power? 10x that for the length of his reign doesn't back up your point at all.

Nothing more than a publicity stunt for a fledgling magazine, which worked to perfection. This guy had his agenda set out waaay ahead of time and knew exactly where this interview was gonna go long before Sully even picked the phone up. He knew he was dealing with an opportunistic rock star and treated him as such. And Sully let himself be led on like a chump, which is pretty hilarious.

No wonder Godsmack allowed the recruitment commercial to use their music - they need the money.
"Arthur" must not be making shit, so Jay has to resort to doing a "Rosie" on Sully.
Sounds like both are selling out. -g-

First of all, I joined the service in 1992. The military came to my high school on career day. That was was 14 years ago! I volunteered to join the military, the draft ended a long time ago, nobody is forced to join the military. Sure, recruiters show you the benefits of joining, but it is a decision that is made soley by the person that raises their right hand and swears themselves into it. As far as "Arthur" magazine. That was a cheap way of boxing a not so very bright person into a corner. The conversation was completely manipulated. The interview was probably done by some guy in a Starbucks cafe while he was sipping on his $8 Latte. He obviously has no opinions of his own, all of his beliefs come from smoking weed and taking notes while watching CNN. I have never been a big Godsmack fan, but I don't dislike them either. I though Sully did okay, considering he was blindsided by some want-to-be hippie. So what if he sold a song to the military? Moby sells songs to commercials constantly, does that mean he is forced to stand behind the product as gospel? That fuckin' reported needs his fuckin' ass kicked.

But that interviewer was clearly just starting shit with the guy so he could sell some mags. Just because the band allowed the US Military to use their music, does not make anyone in Godsmack a fucking expert on everything to do with it. The guy said he supports the troops of his country no matter what, leave it at that. That interviewer is a fucking jerkoff.

Hindsight is always 20/20. After 9/11 everybody was ready to kick ass, regardless of who's ass it was. The same happened again a few years later when the Iraq thing began. So now its not going perfectly and everybody suddenly pretends like they never supported it. Give me a break. This is the same kind of crap that happens with Pop music. One year NSYNC sells millions and millions of records, the next year the people who bought them have moved onto the next big thing. This week the big thing happens to be bashing the war in Iraq.
I don't know about you, but if you fight a war and only a couple thousand people from your army die in the span of 3 years then thats pretty damn successful. How many tens of thousands of US soldiers died and Nam? I'd say that in comparison Iraq is doing pretty damn good.
In a couple more years, when Iraq is a stable ally, where people live free like they do here, people will change their minds again and pretend that they never had any doubt.
If Godsmack wants to support our military then thats their own fucking business. Last time i checked being a patriot is a good thing, not a bad one. Don't agree? Move to a different country. America is a free country, but nobody has the right to take away those freedoms.

The final verdict:
Jay Babcock is a total idiot. His goal was to get attention for his magazine, so he twisted Sully's words around and decided to turn the interview into an attack instead.
I'd say that he reached his goal, wouldn't you? Now at least 100,000 people who'd never heard of Arthur magazine, and probably never would have had this "interview" not taken place, are aware of its existence. Nice publicity stunt, dumb ass.

Sully should have proudly owned up to using their song in military commercials. If that's how he feels, he shouldn't back down to some wussy little journalist who has to use some passive-aggressive lecturing technique diguised as an interview to get accross his own point of view.
Again, Sully should have said, "Yeah, we did it because we support our military" which he was alluding to before he made himself look silly by back-peddling. Afterwhich, he should have laughed and hung up because you KNOW that little thick-rimmed glasses-wearing, veggie-eating, "intellectual", buddy-holly look-alike would not have dropped it (as you could tell by the interview).
What a wuss. The both of them.

Jezus.. What is wrong with that guy. They put their song in the commercial because they probably thought is was cool that the army chose them. They didn't agree with anything he stated in any way by doing that. Godsmack didn't particually do it for political reasons, can't the guy just understand that. Maybe they thought it was a good opportunity to promote the music or whatever.
Btw, anyone that joins the army because they liked the song in the commercial is pretty retarted I think.
Interviewing Sully like that and disrespecting his opinion in such a retarted way is a pretty arrogant action. I'm surprised how long Sully put up with his crap. Good thing he talked about the topic and then hang up, that guy isn't worth shit.

People can rip on Godsmack all you want but at least Sully spoke his mind. Arthur from "Arthur Magazine" is a typical flaming lib who has nothing better to do with his time then criitcize the US and its policies. The US is not perfect but I would rather live hear than anywhere else in the world. Since, when is it a crime to support your home country. Who cares if Sully supports the US, (I think it's great) what does that have to do with their music. You think Sully got owned in the interview, what a joke! I am surprised he even stayed on the phone that long to talk with some ignorant, supposive interviewer. He's supposed to be asking the questions but in turn twists everything around and gets political instead of talking about the album. Pa"fucking"thetic. Grow up libs and get a life or pack your shit up and get the fuck out of the US. Peace

use godsmack as a recruiting tool is horrible. sully, you are a dumb-ass motherfucking douche weasel.
i dont see how are dogs of war who willingly joined the military were "hoodwinkled" into going into combat. futhermore, there is no war. congress has not declared war, and dubya has not invoked the 90 days clause which allows war to be waged w/o congress approving.---read up on it babcock
and sully, by allowing your music, if you can call that drivel music, to be used in a military commercial means you advocate our youth signing a potential death warrent. our blabber brothers and sisters would call you A SELL OUT. its one thing to support our troops. but allowing your music to be used as a recruiting tool means that you support whatever action our military takes.
sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout sellout
sellout of the worst kind. kiddies, time to dump all your godsmack cds to the used cd store. if you support the trops, use the money you make from selling your godsmack cds and send a care package to one of the troops. include real metal discs, terrorizer, snacks.

It makes perfect sense. The kind of people that listen to pop music are the same people that have fickle stances on everything in the world. Their "opinions" always match the crowd, and are directly influenced by the media. When the media turned against the war, so did the dumb masses.

maybe if you quit your job at mcdonald's and got out of your mother's basement, and got a talent, you could become half as succesful as godsmack has.
and as for for jay babcocksucker,
he probably made up this whole interview.
if not, he obviously changed sully's words around even during it, if it is real.
donating your song to the military DOES NOT equal sending people to get killed.

As much as the interviewer is right it should be aboput the music rather than trying to put into a politicial debate. Even if the navy uses Godsmacks music and Godsmack supports our military, it doesn't make a differance whats so ever. And if there are kids that hear a godsmack song off of a military commercial that gets them to want to join, that is their fault. They should open their eyes and educate themselves, not the band allowing them to use their music.

Does anyone else see the irony in the military using a song called "Sick Of Life" as a recruitment song?
This Sully guy is apparently an idiot- he blathers on and on about "protecting our country" but didn't seem to get the memo that the rest of us out here in reality did- we're currently involved in a war with a country that didn't and couldn't threaten the US while bin Ladne runs free.
"I don't know where bin Laden is. I have no idea and really don't care. It's not that important. It's not our priority." - G.W. Bush, 3/13/02

When you sell your music to War Pigs it sort of makes you guilty by association. If Sully didn't understand how his music was, which I seriously doubt, then he should have said No. Since the music and ads are rather powerful and glorifying the military then one must assume guilt in this case since our national defensive systems are on quite the offensive lately. Truth is, we've elected people who've lost perspective of what this country is about and anyone associated with it will get a black eye. Sorry Sully, you've waded in hip deep, maybe without thinking but claiming ignorance makes you look twice as bad.

Okay, if you use your song in a commercial, and I don't care what you are selling, you should be prepared to defend the use of it. It could be for the money or whatever. That being said thoough, it looks quite obvious the guy had other plans for Sully before the interview even began and for that I am on Sully's side. You'd all be up in arms if it was your fav band or one you liked. Hell, lots of people on here even hate Godsmack but are defending him. That's what I like to see for once. Have the balls to stand by what you beleive in or do. Do I like Godsmack? They are okay I guess, yes I listen to a few tunes here and there. Do I give a fuck, not really. Music is music man, just enjoy the shit you like and fuck the rest of the world.

The reporter had no hidden agenda on his interview to Sully. He´s just a little frustrated about the fact that our beloved music is used to recruit people into the Army.
Now, it is obvious that Sully did it for the cash. There is nothing more to it. Sully does not "support the troops", or however you brainwashed fucks call it nowadays. He probably does not care at all, cuz he knows that he is not being recruited, and he is makin a profit from his song.
Now, stop it with the stupid "support the troops" brainwash slogan, you morons! There were massive demonstrations before this "support the troops" campaign began, all over the States. Now, how did everyone change their minds overnight? You were brainwashed, you fucks. You are just too proud to admit it.

The following verse is taken from the Quran, the Islamic holy book: "For it is written that a son of Arabia would awaken a fearsome Eagle. The wrath of the Eagle would be felt throughout the lands of Allah and lo, while some of the people trembled in despair still more rejoiced: for the wrath of the Eagle cleansed the lands of Allah and there was peace."

while, i wont say any names, but a few people here have to resort to name calling and "im with your mom right now", etc to get their point across.
why did godsmack go to iraq to play a concert if they are only in it for the money? they could probably make a lot more $ in a US city, or any other city for that matter, than going to play for the troops (if they got payed at all).
about sick of life- they dont have any of the words on the commercial. they might have sully's growl/scream at the end but i think its just the opening intrumental. and it is there because its a good song to get the blood flowing, its an exciting song. the navy picked it themselves, godsmack didnt go and ask them if they wanted to use sick of life.
and i hope a lot of you people who whine about the government or use screen names of serial killers, i hope you know that without our government and without our troops from the past and present, you wouldnt be allowed to say what you do. there wouldnt be message boards such as this one, you wouldnt have freedom of speech, there wouldnt be a minimun wage (i know that applies to a lot of you), and jay bab-cockrubber wouldnt be able to say what he does and run his stupid little magazine. hell, there wouldnt be bands that can speak out against the government...nothing like you have today.
so quit bitching about everything.

Yeah, you know, because Sully had prior knowledge that this Arthur character was going to make the review based entirely on Godsmack's supposed "pro-war" stance.
So, yes, he did make Sully look like a jerk, when he gave him no prior knowledge what the interview was going to be regarding -- obviously that was not the point of the interview, and Sully assumed it was going to be in regards to their new album I'm sure.
Yes, he did get mad and start acting like a child. But the questions were so offensive how could he not help but be taken back? Tell me how you would have responded given the situation. I'm willing to bet the exact same way if you were in his shoes -- it's not like he had a ton of time to think about it.
I don't think they're anti-war by any means, but pro-war? Please.

Here is the deal people, first of all the army did come to Godsmack for the purpose of using there music to ENDORSE the Military. Now, should the fellas of Godsmack done a little more research? ABSOLUTELY!
Because unbelievably folks there is bound to be at least one or two morons out there who will see these commercials and say hey why not. Another thing is the military goes to Godmack for another track to use in recruiting commercials. The track is called Sick of Life.
An impressionable youth sees the commercial and thinks of the track (More importantly the Name of said track). A wise man once said that this country’s government gives you the illusion of choice, but no real choice at all. Another wise man said (and I think it was Bill Maher) the people who are in favor of this war should be the ones to go fight it.
That means Britney Spears, her baby and her prison BitcH Kevin. And if necessary Sully. In addition, if he was quoted in that statement in 2003, he should have taken the chance to reform his opinions.
"a lot of people I thought lashed out pretty quickly at what we did and i thought the government did everything pretty cleanly and publicly as possible."
I personally think that the public did not lash out quick enough. Now, if some dam fools goes and joins the Military because of a Godsmack song, and dies in battle. The blood should and will fall to where it belongs.
Not on the hands of any of the members of Godsmack but to the hands of George W. Bush. They also talked about the intro to the track 'Straight out of Line'. Personally it dose not invoke any type of Pro Military insinuations anymore the intro to Metallica’s One did.
Sully said he did not have enough education on the Military. That is definitely something he should have thought about before cashing his check. Maybe he felt some kind patriotic duty in letting use have the music.
He was also right about those statistics about the death toll. In addition, if you were Middle Eastern or Arabic you could probably even justify 9/11. Although it is my personal belief that the Bush administration or someone else in control orchestrated the events of 9/11 specifically to create a conflict with the Middle East, but that’s a different story.
In closing, every man should have an opinion. Popular or unpopular, if someone puts blind confidence in something its ignorance not faith. Moreover, even those who say that they have blind faith occasionally should peek under the blind fold.
I am a fan of Godmaack and in no way do I feel the obligation to kill Arabs or jump from helicopters. Also, if someone for instance me or the person conducting the interview speaks ill of the government or the military it dose not in anyway, shape or from show our disloyalty for this country.

i read this, but not the posts yet, and once i do i might comment again....but wow. what the fuck is with the interviewer? honestly i never knew his stance on Iraq...i know they did the shows, and are kinda in the middle like he explains, definitely no System of a Down or Tom Morello of course, but jeez what the fuck?, why does the interviewer just berate him the whole time? what's the point? there is no thing that says to be in a metal band you HAVE to be anti-war or liberal, Democrat, whatever.
i'm just saying. an interview like that is as obnoxious as fuckers like Sean Hannity on his show. it's annoying as fuck trying to see some blatantly one-sided fucker try to dominate the discussion and not let the other person fucking talk. if you've ever seen Hannity & Colmes or The O'Reilly Factor and seen how they never let anyone who doesn't agree with them (meaning anti-Bush or liberal in any way) finish a goddamn sentence, then you can see how this interview above is kind of a 180-degree reverse of a guy, who's as blatantly one-sided but liberal, counter to a blatantly conservative guy like Hannity, doing the same shit.
it's just as annoying...WHEN EITHER SIDE DOES IT. that's actually why it's cool to see this site go off the deep end and turn into total bitchy rants and shit back and forth. we get huge rants full of bitchiness...but from each side. and since practically nothing gets deleted very often and it's online instead of talking heads where people are cut off, at least you see every bit of the discussion and get equal bitchiness or full arguments from both sides instead of "fair and balanced", meaning the side who's running the interview cuts off the other person 90% of the time, conservative or liberal.
yes, yes, i like the format on this site, compared to this shit we're debating from above, and idiot channels like FOXNEWS.......

This dick is pissed because someone has a different opinion than him on military matters. Yeah, it would've been great to see Sully punch Babcock out, because it would've proved he couldn't hold an intellectual debate to save his life.
Hell, the interview proved that anyway. ;)
Still, Arthur mag's tactics were kinda low, too.

two things amaze me from this interview 1) how badly brainwashed some of the american public are. "THEY'RE ATTACKING US" .. who is they. love it. the university of they.. "they say that".. "aparently there was a experiement conducted and they.."
2) at the same time, this interviewer had no interest in talking about anything music related with godsmack, and had this whole interview preplanned. this is called a loaded question.
a poor interview, but not because of the content, but because he trapped a musician to talking about something he had no clue about (even if sully thought he did) and made him look like a redneck.

These kids didn't know they were going to be USED by some DICKHEAD president to go into some FUCKED war!! It's not their fault! And it's certainly not Godsmack's fault.
Our military are fucking heroes and they got dragged into this bullshit because of the random whims of a corrupt administration. I fully support Godsmack in their ongoing respect for our military.

I don't agree with that statement. We have alot of women over here in the Navy in Guam and I can't remember any sexual harassment cases. The women are crazy in the Navy they love to be harassed and have lots of sex with many different guys even if they are married. My god just last weekend in one our Navy neighborhood garages they had all their tops off while playing a strip dice game and doing extra activities after that. Nice girls they are married and do you think they are going to report being sexually harassed.

"...Godsmack has the right to do with their songs as they please. Isn't that what liberals are usually screaming? Freedom to whatever you want? This dick is pissed because someone has a different opinion than him on military matters. So he wants to blame Godsmack on enticing "kids" into a military that he apparently doesn't think should exist. How ignorant can you get?..."
The point of the interviewer is not that he has a different opinion than Sully or whatever the invertebrate's name is, but that Sully agrees that the military at times does bad things to foreigners and to army personnel, but nevertheless allows his music to be used as a propaganda tool. They hold pretty similar beliefs, but one of them isn't acting on them because of, well, money. So don't give me the 'Sully is a true American'-line. He's in it for the money, hombre.
And the interviewer never said he was against the military.

I just tried to go to the website as linked in the article, and it came up,"file not found". I'm wondering why that is? Anyway, the interviewer is a hack, and should not be allowed to "interview" anyone else. I'm not supporting GodSmack or Sully, as I don't care for their music, but to be misled like that Arthur dude did was truly offensive. I don't know why GS let their music be used in that way and I don't care, so it's truly pointless to question/speculate why.

1. Schedule a music interview and then ambush him with a political diatribe filled with lies that the artist has to defend, while doing his best to be courteous, as you don't have anything to lose, since nobody reads your shitty, basement web-zine anyway.
2. Support Saddam and all enemies of the USA
3. Take the word of Saddam or Osama, over the words of your president and leaders from both sides of the spectrum that saw the threats, along with the rest of the world.
4. Call people hyper=patriotic when they can see the truth about the bullshit lib-traitor agenda.
5. Hate your country so damn much, you're willing to lie, control the media and concentrate on the negative so damn much, just for an ounce of power, back into LIB hands.
6. You have to believe Saddam was really elected, never was a threat, obeyed all of the resolutions that kept him in power, and was really the rightful and elected leader of Iraq.
I think BigCommieNewsDay sponsored this interview and forgot it was Clinton that made it law for regime change in Iraq. It would all makes sense and it was funny to see a much more distinguished Sully, hang up the phone on his piece of shit, sideswiping, neo-Commie asshole.
When all is said and done...
LIBS = COWARD DIPSHITS THAT WOULD SELLOUT THEIR MOTHERS FOR A NICKEL!
Without the military, even YOU LIB TRAITORS ARE NOTHING! At least they perform a serive for this country and would even defend the people who hate them, hate themselves and their own country.. THAT MEANS YOU!
Kill the Eurabian.
Eurabia (and the neo-Commies) are the enemy!
You know who you are.

"" I served years ago, in Sarajevo among ather places. ""
What a coincidence! So did I!
Let me guess.. You flew over the country while en route to your court-marshall sentencing, right?
Most of the troops vote Republican and support Bush, so as usual, you were the cook in the basement who sucked the dicks of all the gays who got in through from 'Don't know, don't tell.'
You flamming pieces of queer-bait are all the same. All stupid-fuckholes who just want to surrender and sellout, while pretending to be soldiers. Reminds me of Kerry's "Winter Soldier" traitorous actions, you stupid piece of shit.
Good to know you had nothing (once again) to refute what I had to say.
I wish you were able to criticize Clinton (and most gutless LIB assholes) for having no military experience, yet using our troops for their own personal distractions, in the political world. Fucking knob-job, retarded bitch LIB.
Game over!
YOU LOSE!

Whatever man :-) I actually checked back here only to find your usual bullshit response. You never served dude - you know it and I know so stop fucking lying, you scrawny-ass, pencilneck, brainwashed, little chickenshit punk :-) Unlike me, you've never been on a real battlefield or seen piles of dead bodies cause Fox "News" won't show you that shit on TV.
And as far as all that gay shit you're always spewing out: you must be talking from first hand experience or something - either that or we're talking some SERIOUSLY repressed fantasy shit here :-)
Consider yourself - once again - royally owned, pussy! See you in the next thread

spooky, where the hell have you been?! Blabbermouth wouldn't mean anything without you. I mean you give it meaning. I mean you put the blabber in the word "blabber." Nobody's mouth has more blabber to add to the discussion than yours. So tell me, what's been going on since our last discussion on the Rush article? Did you finally pass the 4th grade? You're taking good advantage of the NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT, aren't ya? I'm happy for ya bud. Bush is truly serving your interests. Post me a message when you have time. It'd be good to hear from ya.

Tell me how many times the United States has been attacked since 9/11. NONE! Before 9/11 almost every year we were attacked. The Uss Cole, Marine barracks in Kenya, the first WTC lots others, look it up. All the attacking is being concentrated in Iraq instead of our streets.

Fuck all you anti military pussies! I have been in the militrary for 24 years protecting your sorry ass... You have the right to post your panzie pussy ass comments here because the military keeps you safe and secure and from piece of shit extremist from coming in and over throwing your government or wiping you out.. (Which there are millions out there who want to that!) There are countries out there who dont have the freedoms you do. If Sully wants to support the troops, then God Bless him... You dont have to support the politics to support the troops.... These young men and women at least have the courage and the fortitude to do what you pussies would never have the balls to do...
