ANTHRAX Guitarist SCOTT IAN: DIMEBAG's Legacy Won't Be Disrespected On My Watch

ANTHRAX guitarist Scott Ian has commented on the "controversy" surrounding a recently published Internet interview with ANTHRAX guitarist Dan Spitz in which Spitz appeared to insinuate that late PANTERA/ DAMAGEPLAN guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott "copied" his leads for ANTHRAX's "Stomp 442" record, and slam some of his bandmates on a number of topics, including the release of ANTHRAX's "The Greater of Two Evils" CD (featuring re-recordings of the band's classic songs). In a posting on ANTHRAX's official forum (where he posts under the name "Black Thirteen"), Ian stated about the interview (which was published on the Metal-Rules.com web site), "He [ Dan Spitz] claims it's bullshit. I hope it is. We are in the process of getting the tapes. Innocent until proven guilty. Truth will prevail. It has to because these statements are inexcusable. If he said it, or if this writer did just make it up, out of all of it; saying that Darrell copied the leads, taking credit away from what was unique to Darrell, that is beyond low. Disrespect Darrell's legacy? No, not on my watch." In a follow-up posting, Ian went on to add, "I'm here to defend myself and my band. Dime isn't. We have found out from Nuclear Blast [ ANTHRAX's European record label] that they stopped letting this writer do interviews with any of their bands because he shows up drunk and uses the time to get his records signed. Dimebag was no guitar virtuoso or "god". I'm not gonna go off on him or anything, but I'm sick of all this praise bullshit. No one would say any of this shit if the man was still living. Dime is a way better guitar player than Spitz. Why would he have to copy the solo unless he was told thats what they wanted. What would spitz havve to gain from stating this opinion. I have no doube before even hearing dans demos that there was either the structure or direction of a solo already in place. That was what they wanted to do and Dime follow the plan. SO WHAT...

I liked Dimebag because he was a caring and nice person, not because of his guitar work. He was a great human being that more people could learn from and it is a true loss that he is gone.

Excuse me, but "Stomp" is a crap album. Why anybody would want credit for anything on it is beyond me.
Ok here is the beef....
Sound of white noise was one Anthrax's best albums. When John joined the band it was like some was breathing new life into a dead carcass.
They had already destroyed their credibility with "bring the noise" witch their first attempt to cash in on the "Rap" craze and earn a few extra cheaks.
Sound came out and the band had credibility again. Then what do they do?? they try to catch the next trend and put out Stomp!!!!
I seen Anthrax with Bush and they still put on a good show but they still did that bring the noise crap and the show was at Milakwee Metal Fest!!!
Then some time goes by and BANG! Bush is out of the band and there is a reunion tour and so on we all know the story.
They come to Chicago where they even stated on "Weve Cum for you all" interviews with Charlie, that no one in Amercia but Chicago gives them any respect or buys there albums blah blah blah. So they filmed the vid for "Safe Home" @ Chicago and that whole story.
Then the reunion shows happen and tickets are $50!!!!! with no good opening bands or anything!!!!!
House of Blues holds 1200- 1300 packed!!! 2 nights @ $50 a ticket they were trying to pull in $125k from 2 shows!!!
Ok now I seen Dimmu w/ Nevermore Children of Boden and Hypocrasy for 25$ and these guys have to fly here from Europe and get visa and everything. The New G'N'R played Allstate Arena a couple years ago ant the show was amazing by the way!!!, and tickets were 30$ and the FUCKING STAGE THAT THEY HAD WAS INSANE!!!!!! Pyro!!! grand piano the whole nine yards!!! I repeat $30!!!!
Iron Maiden big production every show $50 that is worth it, but for Anthrax to play House of Blues with just a backdrop and want $50, thats a rip off!!!!
So whatever they are trying to feed to you don't buy it, They just want your money!!!!!
Charlie came into the restuarnt where I work at that time, I said "Hey you know you look a lot like the drummer from Anthrax." and all he could say was ya I get that a lot and chukled like dick drip retard.
What a poser he could not even admit he was in a Metal band!! what a fucking poser!!!
Fuck Anthrax!!!!!!
They proved to me what they are all about and thats M-O-N-E-Y!!!!!!

I remember Anthrax from way back when Spreading the Disease album came out and must have seen them 10 times at L'amours in Bklyn. I always thought they were just ok. Personally, I like the John Bush era he just sounds better over the music. Anyway, Dimebag was a great guitar player and he deserves respect and praise for his work. Truthfully, I thought his riffs and rhythm work was where he really shined not his solos. Don't get me wrong the man could shred but a lot of guys can shred and don't get nearly the credit Dime does. What I am saying is when someone dies he is catapulted to legacy status instantly. Some deserving some not, but that's just my opinion.
Now to the little watchmaker who's regretting his words of criticism. I read that interview he is being grilled on and although he does come off like a jerk off with a (cross-eyed) Napoleon complex, I truly think he's says exactly what he feels...he is being blunt and honest...fucked up but probably true. The whole thing with Dimebag and his solos on Stomp 442 I don't believe for a second Dime blows Spitz away in that department...can't wait to hear about those tapes. Spitz calling Belladonna uneducated was just stupid and ignorant and needs a beating. However, I will agree with him about "The Greater of Two Evils" release that was just a major slap in the face of Belladonna and Spitz. It was a poor excuse to make a buck.
It seems Spitz is trying to retract his words and doing a poor job of it. Good luck little man I don't think Jesus can help you on this one. Got the time.

I agree, if this interview is verbatim of Dan's words...he's got to go. If he's not kicked out it's purely about the reunion and money.
I really can't see how a music journalist can fuck up this much. In my opinion, I think Spitz really said the shit, he should have kept his feelings to himself. I hope I'm wrong.

I swear to God I am not making this up. That Manowar show on 12/16/84 might have been my first show ever as a kid. I have a picture with Ross the Boss and the date is on the back of it...I gotta look for it. It was either 84', 85' or 86' I saw Manowar a bunch of times back then. Did Savage Thrust open up that show? Wow, I'm getting flash backs. L'amours was great back then.

Dimebag was shot down by a deranged fan...whatnot. Spitz made some comments...Ian says the guy is mentally fucked up which makes the interviewer percived as incompetent of quoting truthfully. Why would someone make up a rumour without motive? What relationship does the interviewer have with anyone from Anthrax. If there is a history between the two (Anthrax and the interviewer), then I'd say that maybe the interviewer was lying. If there is none then why would the interviewer make up such a tale. What were his reasons. Does he have a grudge against them, which in fact can make him seem like Dimebag's killer, or is he out to just cause trouble. Look into both sides. For myself, I think Spitz said it. I don't see a reason for the interviewer to make up a story. Nonetheless, if Spitz actually said it, he's a stupid fuck who deserves to not have the ability to play. I like both guitarists. Dime stood out like a diamond in the rough. He had his own style which was non-comparable to anyone else. Spitz has his as well but, the reality is, he didn't make a substantial mark on the music. Dime's family and fans suffered a great loss and there is no reason to tarnish his memory. If you have something to say about him, keep it to yourself...Dime isn't here to defend himself. If you talk shit it will come back to you at some point. Accept the value of your abilities. I accept every guitar player, and I've worked for a lot of them, as being amazing at what they do. It's not about the ability to shred that matters, it's how you display your abilities. Iommi is different than Rhoades. Eddie is different than Satriani. All of them play and creat exceptionally well yet none are better than the other. Just leave it alone, shut the fuck up and appreciate the fact that you're on a stage playing every night.

Both Ian and Spitz are poor writers and contributers all together. Their band has fallen. Anthrax has fallen deep. Far too deep to ever see the light of day again. It is of no wonder that these fools continue to bicker amongst their ranks. Taunting the media. Spitz said what he said and meant it. I guarantee Dimebag ripped off some of his lead. Charlie and Paul play like half of them. Dime plays on two songs (King Size and Riding Shotgun). On King Size, the solo is just a bunch of bends and screams - the usual from Dime. It ain't even close to what he did with Pantera. On Riding Shotgun, the main solo does sound like something Dan would write.
I just don't get the deal here. So what if Dan said that he wrote the solos heard on Stomp 442 and that Dime and Paul copied those - who cares? Dime still put his own touch on the ones he played. And I don't think Dan was out to disrespect Dime with the comment. I think it was directed at Scott and Charlie, not Dime or Paul, for that matter.
A big deal over some mediocre solos. Dime's solos with Pantera were aeons better than the ones on Stomp.

Anthrax probably sold less than 75,000 copies of their last album in the US ("We've Come For You All"). This will hardly result in "loads of cash" for the band or make them rich. The reunion tour is well attended but they're still playung clubs and small theaters. Again, not the type of thing that will make them rich.

I bet anything that THAT's why Scott made his comment. I think he's more pissed off about the "cover band" thing than what was said about Dime.
The funny thing is that the interview was actually quite good, especially the stuff dealing with the early days. Dan did make some questionable comments about their original singer, Neil, which I think he should've just kept to himself. But it's probably nothing that Scott or any of the other guys wouldn't say.

How can he and the management and rest of the band put up with Spitz's comments about the cover band thing and ESPECIALLY about Joey? Then Spitz goes out and starts posting crazy things about his wife's Playboy party, etc.. Is'nt there some kind of rule with this band that all press interviews and postings are approved by the mgmt or else shut up? This Spitz guy is going to most certainly ruin any hopes Anthrax has of moving forward. Get a new guy who will shut his mouth and do a good job. This Spitz is a time bomb waiting to explode Anthrax

Spreading to persistenance are the best anthrax albums. i'm the man was the first (maybe only ) platinum sucess, so the shorts and rap helped dude. as far as spitz/dime goes, i don't think i'd want cedit for the shitty albums they've been putting out for the past 10 years or so.

Funny how you dump on Dime for playing "the same pentatonic bullshit" for each solo, when it's just as easy to criticize Luca Turilli for repeating the same neoclassical licks on HIS solos. Personally on most given days I'd take MacAlpine, Michael Romeo, and yes, Dimebag over Luca, although I do like his albums.

He wasnt really needed as many guitarists can play a part in place of Dan but listening to those early solos and his tone up until time it was amazing. Not as good an example of perfect tone as Dimes(who Vinnie Paul is responsible for). I bet most people dont know that either. That VP is responsible in large part for Dimes sound.
As far as guitarists go Dan Spitz is no slouch. You may not like him for any number of reasons but saying he isnt a decent guitar player with a unique style and sound is just like saying you dont know what the fuck you are talking about. Spreading the Disease sounds fucking sick cranked up. I mean the guitar is fucking SIICCKK.

Who cares what Spitz said, it's over, Scott, i believe you are just using this as a means to find some way to break up the "classic" line up and get on with John Bush again, because you know this "classic" line up ain't gonna do shit. And oh yeah, Dime was no guitar god,or legend. He was solid, brutally heavy and man, just a kick ass guy. But a legend, last time I checked legends don't get blown away playing in a shithole place to 200+ people the night he died. Pick up Rebel meets Rebel, its some good stuff.

If you dislike them so much, or any other band for that matter, why are you here reading an article on them? To bring the fans down into your miserable self pitty? Are you jealous? I hope they find these tapes and post them online. I'm sure Spitz may have played what Ian told him to on the demos then Dime came along and played them ten times better. Darrell wasn't there to create the songs just help them out.
