TOOL Frontman Puts Winery Business First
- May 7, 2006
|
|
|
World Entertainment News Network is reporting that TOOL frontman Maynard James Keenan is planning his touring schedule around his new vineyard's harvesting and bottling because he insists on being part of the process. The eccentric rocker launched Merkin Vineyards in Sedona, Arizona last year and his first attempt at winemaking, the limited edition Primer Paso, has been a sellout.
And now the wine connoisseur is hooked on his new hobby and insists on scheduling all records, promoting and touring around the winery's most important weeks.
He says, "The guys know that I've gotta be in Arizona for the harvesting and processing, and then I'll need to be back there again for the bottling. We'll be working our touring schedule around it."
Keenan plans to release a 2004 Nagual de la Naga and a 2004 Nagual del Sensei, as well as a new Primer Paso under his Caduceus Cellars trade name later this year.

Make me laugh. Yeah, any band that sells are apparently overrated, according to people that seem to think that if a band sells a lot of records they are automatically "overrated". Tool are one of the very few unique bands on the planet right now. If you don't like them that's fine, but calling them overrated is really idiotic. You have to at least admit they are fantastic musicians. If you can't do that, you don't know a thing about the art of creating music, period.

come on, this is taken wayyy out of context. So what if Maynard has another job through entreupreneurship, he's still dedicated to both his bands (even though I don't think many people would give two shits if he quit APC). He's a great musician and loves what he does, he's not putting wine before his fans, he's just trying to juggle both.

find me a band memeber who doesn't have to work massive international tours/extensive mixing and mastering inot their schedules. You're telling me everytime Glen Benton is on tour and wants to eat a fetus/burn a church he says to himself "Wait Glen, wait. I've got a show tomorrow in Tucson, and I have to start recroding my vocals for a new Vital Remains CD. I can't eat this fetus/burn this church." NO, he doesn't say that to himself. Sometimes, in certain situations, something has to come before band business.
And instead of eating fetuses/burning churches, MJK bottles wine. To each their own.

actually most novices could pick up an instrument and learn a tool song. Musically its not challenging at all. Its formulative music with heavy layering and an air of pretentiousness. I think that is why people say their overrated. The same people that post here are the same that bash 90% of the other bands on this site, thats what cracks me up the most.
I could show you how to play 90% of AEnima in an afternoon.

no its just Tool gets a lot of attention because they are the mainstream version of this type of music thats why i say its ironic - their the killswitch engage of prog rock which most of the same people will happily bash in other threads thats the best part of the entire thing. You think Nirvana was the first to do what they did even thoguh their credited with starting a movement or whatever? theres a difference between getting your music to the masses first and creating it first.
far as musical complexity. any decent guitarist or bassist who can ear music will tell you their stuff is easy to learn and not very complex.
if Tool is your thing thats cool, Music is about an expression or emotional response to a set of melodies and/or harmonies. If Tool does it for you thats cool. My only beef is all the people trying to shove it down my throat -shrug-

Sure, a lot of people can pick up an instrument and learn a Tool song easily, but that shouldn't be an issue. A lot of Tool's talent is their ability to WRITE the songs, not play them. Are there a million novice musicians out there writing songs like that?

To the comment that Aenima could be taught to most novices in an afternoon, I'd say that's not completely accurate...Yes, the guitar-wise the music may not be that complex, but drum-wise I'd say Danny Carey's one of the best in the world. His lines are ridiculously complex, and besides Dream Theaters' drummer, I can't name another that plays anything like him. Not trying to jam it down your throat, but Carey's absurd and deserves respect from anyone that enjoys music.
And I gotta agree, playing the guitar rifts may not be too difficult, but I don't hear many bands writing music as tight and creative as Tool does...you may not like maynard either, but he's one of the few singers that actually has intelligent lyrics that actually say something.

tool overrated? because they sold a shit load of albums in the first week?
if you have any kind of band experience you'd know that you wouldn't have to play amazing shit to be a good band... look at dream theater, they are one of the most talented bands out there. but you know why they don't get much notice, because their shit is not easy to listen to.
read up on some of the most famous song writers... most of their shit is simple to play, and easy to listen to.
i don't understand why you would say tool is "overrated." the way tool works together (chemistry) is flawless. and to the guy who compared tool to opeth... get the fuck out, who can't growl in a mic? the man simply can't sing.
tool is simply like sex, you listen to it... enjoy it, not too heavy, not too light, more heavy than light. and when the time comes, they give you a fuckin cosmic orgasm.

Some of you people are so retarded. How about you tell me some of your hobbies so I can bash it and make you look like some school boy bitch. If Maynard is into wine, so the hell what. Maynard is so busy anyway, just the fact that he's doing something extra like this is amazing. Give the man some credit.
As for the fact that their music is easy to play... Sure, but I would believe that their lyrics and vocals are the most amazing thing I've heard. Maynard's voice alone is enough to keep me attached to the band. Also, their guitar effects are quite amazing, something my brother and I have yet to figure out on some songs like Forty-Six and Two, Reflection, and some of the others.... And I won't even go into detail on the drumming, because the drumming is plain out amazing.
Tool is not overrated. They've sold so much, with what... four albums? And plus, as everyone knows, they're touring, and here, getting tickets to the show here was nearly impossible. That's just amazing, the fact that the tickets sold out before they even went on sale. They aren't overrated.

if you think tool is overrated you know absolutely nothing about music, these guys write the most crushing music. Their newest album is a bit different from their pre-lateralis material but it is still wicked, just because a band sells a shit-load of records doesnt make them overrated, when you'v been a band for as long as they have and put out 6 albums the fanbase isnt exactly small. I would even go as far as saying they are underrated there are still so many people who havent even heard a tool song. If they were talked about more even more people could enjoy them as much as current tool fans.

But all these other guys who are adamant about TOOL being a terrible band, with little or no talent amaze me with the energy they are putting into posting. Judging by your grammar and choice in words it is no wonder that you would rather pound beers and listen to music that consists of growling and low toned thrash riffs. I have listened to Opeth recently and I am impressed. I don't get the same feel from their music as I do TOOL though, but Ghost Reveries or whatnot was a good album. TOOL is more than a band, and most people that I meet don't like them. Those people I find either don't like heavy music, have short attention spans and watch to much TV, or are under 21. TOOL is like good wine, textured and composed of a variety of flavors. I agree that they are not metal, but in my opinion they are not just a band either. I would say that if you categorize brittany spears as mainstream then TOOL is definately not. They are almost never on the radio, almost never on that shit called MTV, and almost never do big interviews. Isn't it amazing that they released a record that is more than half way to platinum within the first week yet I heard nothing about its release other than by word-of-mouth and their own website?? they outsold pearl jam (not metal but a big name) by more than 2 to 1... They have kept hundreds of thousands of fans salivating in anticipation of thier recent release for 4 years! So if Opeth hasn't gotten the same response then I say you are just pissed that YOUR favorite band isn't a multi grammy multiplatinum utterly original group of ROCK GODS who can take time off to make wine and still be more hard fucking core and achieve sonic perfection with every second on their new release.... I mean shit man... its just music anyway, and I'd say my insane ass is more in the right professing the awesomeness of a musical group than spending my time ripping on one. why dont you be more productive and send hate mail to the pussycat dolls.

They can stay "overrated" forever as far as I am concerned. That way, the shows I am at don’t have the teen girls with their cell phones and spirit fingers who only know the song that is being played on The Rock 104, the "wild" FM. Tool changes things up with each CD and always gives us something new to hear and to think about, but granted, they aren't for everyone. You think they couldn’t produce a re-hash of Sober or Prison Sex or Ænima every other year? Of course they could. But take a look at some of the bands out there that never changed their musical direction. Where are they now?

However simple Tool's music is to play, is irrelevent to how good their music is.
Look at Mozart. I can teach you how to play any of his solo piano pieces in one afternoon. Most of Mozart's music isn't difficult; most of Mozart's music is *intelligently* composed.
This is the same with Tool. It doesn't matter how fast, or with the complexity you move your fingers. Intelligent composition is Tool's game. They *compose* their music. That means they sit down and write their music on paper. How many bands - forget that - musicians do that today? Very very few.
Mozart's influence and popularity is still felt today. Tool's influence will be around for hundreds of years, just like Mozart's.
Tool is the greatest band in existence. Don't forget it.

"Wine and rock~n~roll...Wine and metal...don't go hand in hand...wine and elton john sounds more like it......" CHRIS BARNES is one of the most metal motherfuckers ever, and if you watch the Double Dead video old Chris is sluggin' on a bottle of wine while he's hangin' with some fans, also Philip Anselmo has also been seen numerous time with a bottle of wine. If that ain't some shit goin' "hand and hand" than you must not know metal from a dick in your ass.

According to Neilsen SoundScan, "10,000 Days" sold a whopping 564,000 copies in its first week here in the US, landing at #1 in the Billboard Top 200 and outselling Pearl Jam's new album (#2) by a little more than 2-to-1.
Not only did "10,000 Days" go #1 in the US, but it also has charted as the #1 album in many European countries, and in New Zealand (true bro!). Not bad for a band that is 'overrated'...

there is nothing stronger in this world than musical prejudice.
You know you guys don't even realize that the ones screaming Maynard is a pussy are being just as immature as the ones who are screaming you don't know anything about music because you don't like Tool. If you don't like Tool that's fine, if you do that's fine too. It's all a matter of oppinion, and nothing you say or do is going to change the other guys mind; he has to do that himself.
As for the musical complexity bit, some of Tools songs aren't that complex (I do like Tool BTW), some are however (I just saw them live at Coachella, I was first row and watching their playing. Danny can PLAY and as for Adam and Justin they can too. Like I said some of their songs weren't that complex I.E. Aenema, but some of the stuff were things that I couldn't even touch with a ten foot pole, so don't dis them because they can play. One thing I can for sure vouch for is that these guys DO know song structure and they DO know musical theory, quite well in fact.). Also, I'd like to say in regard to musical complexity, frankly I don't give a shit how technical you are with your instrument. Technical skill doesn't mean jack shit if you can't write good songs. I know guys who can play guitar like a freaking hurricane but couldn't write a good song of their own if their life depended on it. I think what it all comes down to is, does it work? Does it sound good? that's what's really important in the end.

I really hate to join such an inane round of posts as this one but i truly couldn't help myself when I saw this one. To communicate in a manner which would be barely understood by about half of the people participating in this post, I must admit that kurtis2K8 is possibly the dumbest person who I have encountered on the WWW. He has a) picked a fight with the fans of tool, who are the most loyal group of fans known to exist b) constructed an arguement which is much too easy pull apart. A majority of posts in this thread are based on 'opinion' i.e. tool are over-rated. I strongly disagree, but everyone is entitled to an opinion. I must ask Shroud33 if he hates tool as much as he does why is he methodically reading and posting to news articles based on them.
But anyway, this kurtis character has decided the best way to put across his hatred of tool is to abuse the structure of their songs- the thing which any moron with half a cerebral synapse will know that tool are most acclaimed for. A band which spends 5 years recording an album does not produce songs structured like that (with the obvious exception of st. Anger, courtesy of Mr Hetfeld joining rehab and Kirk being told not to solo).
But if that is the best argument that can be made against tool then none of we tool fans should spare a concern for these Opeth loving degenerates.
P.S. re. the post about tool being opeth for people 16 years and under, i'll ask my 15 year old brother (when he gets back from the 3 hour train ride he just took to watch Opeth) how many of his freinds like tool, and compare that to the number of my friends that like tool.
Liar, lawyer, mirror, whats the difference?
