SEPULTURA Frontman DERRICK GREEN Is Happy To Leave ROADRUNNER Behind
- May 7, 2006
|
|
Blastwave webzine ( web site) recently conducted an interview with SEPULTURA frontman Derrick Green. A few excerpts from the chat follow: Blastwave: I've heard "Dante XXI" referred to as a comeback album. As far as I can see, this line up has produced three quality albums anyway, so why does this one in particular feel like a comeback? Derrick Green: "I don't know if it's a comeback because we've been really fighting for so long with a lot of different things; the changes that have been happening. That's not just the singer leaving but also the record label [ Roadrunner] kind of turning their backs, along with booking agents and a lot of people that made up the structure of SEPULTURA, so it's pretty much building and evolving. And I think we've pretty much been evolving from that point, just starting from scratch and I think that 'Dante XXI' is part of that evolution, along with all the other albums that we did. They were necessary in order to grow and be where we are right now." Blastwave: It seemed like Roadrunner gave up on SEPULTURA pretty unfairly when you joined as the vocalist. When "Nation" was released, I remember there really wasn't a lot of promotion for it and it seemed to almost pass by under the radar. Derrick Green: "Yeah, it was kind of ridiculous since they were under contract to put that record out and they'd spent the money but didn't want to try to get some of their money back. That's when it was evident that we had to leave them as soon as possible because it would've been a shame to release another album and have it pushed back and just really not taken seriously. But I think, with SPV, it's a smaller company but we definitely have more flexibility and they're able to show that they believe in SEPULTURA now and they're not trying to capitalise on the things that have already been done before in the old catalogue. So that was the biggest change for me, a 100% change, to really break into our own as far as becoming more comfortable and more secure. I think that really adds a lot to the music as well." Blastwave: The label support helps keep the music going because you're more passionate about it with that support? Derrick Green: "Yeah, we don't have to worry about pushing them for other little things, like a video or a DVD, things that are necessary to be done. I think SPV really work hard, even though they're a smaller label, but we're much happier." Blastwave: You spoke about playing with Igor before, but he's obviously taking some time out from this [recently completed European] tour. There has been quite a lot of rumour flying around the Internet as far as his position in the band. Do you guys still see him as part of the band, even though he's not taking part in this tour? Derrick Green: "Definitely, and as far as HE is concerned, he's part of the band. The whole rumour on the internet started, of course, because of a Roadrunner connection. They love to try to put things out the same time that we're putting things out and it's really kind of fucked up. They put out 'Under A Pale Grey Sky' the same time we were releasing our album, almost like a competition. They still, to this day, had their supposed friends, or people who call themselves 'friends' of SEPULTURA, wrote this crap on the Internet that he'd left the band and stuff like that. They never even talked to him and so they never really got down to what was actually going on. Igor has a new kid and he's just not 100% there and, like I said, everyone in SEPULTURA should be 100% there. It's not fair to him and to the fans and definitely to us to come out onstage with him thinking, 'I wanna go home right now, I wish I could be home.' It's not just his new kid, he's got a new wife and a whole new set-up so he's trying to get settled and we understood that. We talked about it before and after the album; with the recording of the album and the DVD, there was a lot of stuff all happening at once. But, at the same time, he respects the fact that we have to go out on the road, since we had worked on 'Dante XXI' for almost two years. We have no enemies here and it's great playing with Roy Mayorga and he was in Brazil. Igor just asked him if he could handle playing the new songs as well as the old. It's definitely different playing with a new drummer but, once you see Roy play, he already knows a lot of the SEPULTURA songs from playing with Max and SOULFLY so he was the most likely choice. I've known him even before all this in New York from playing in punk bands and he played in a band called NAUSEA. I knew he'd be capable of doing this whole tour so when he decided to do it, he also became a part of this band." Blastwave: I certainly much prefer the evolution SEPULTURA have gone through [compared to SOULFLY]. Every single SOUFLY album I've heard always makes me feel that they're constantly doing the same old thing, and always trying to make a successful sequel to "Roots". Derrick Green: "Well, the only reason I can tell you that's true is that on their first album, right after 'Roots', they took the same producer, the same mixer, the same studio, the same set up as 'Roots'. That was also when I noticed, when I first heard the band, that they were trying to go for that sound. But the record label was for that and it was making them a lot of money so they really put all their support behind SOULFLY. That's when we knew Roadrunner were turning their backs on us. I already knew they didn't like me, it was pretty easy to tell. Just talking to them face to face, I was instantly thinking, 'You guys are so full of shit.' But, whatever, we moved on and I believe that we have definitely evolved and are getting better and better and better." Read the entire interview at www.blastwave.org.uk.

I really like Sepultura with Max and really gave up after he left. So that being said, how is the band with Derrick and which album do people recommend? By the way, I agree that all Soulfly does sound like a continuation of Roots.

i think sepultura would have been a lot better off changing their name after max left. i mean, besides the nation album, the derrick-era stuff has all been of excellent quality...especially when compared to the first 4 soulfly albums. but, w/how the metal community is, they were pretty much doomed as soon as they decided to get a new vocalist.

Everyone hates Roadrunner. They fucking suck. They hammer you to death re-releasing every 2 bit record they can find about 15 times and spit out any band which they don't think are the flavour of the moment.
Chimaira already left Roadrunner aswell btw.
On another note. Why the fuck does everyone worship Max? He's nowhere near what people make him out to be. He's a half decent vocalist, and I do mean half not some fucking god. Jeez stop kissing the guys ass.
And on another note what happened to Roy Mayorga and why? Plus wasn't there something on here recently about him joining Stone Sour? What's happened with that??

I agree with the people here who thinks that roadrunner sucks ass, but you guys take into account that roadshitty's main goal is to make money and Sepultura lost it all after Max left.
Sales = Music quality ??? NO FUCKING WAY, but let's be realistic. Max was the man and Derrick's not enough. Besides, sepultura has been delivering low quality music... plus Igor's strange settle down out of the blue. COME ON!!!
They are really damn good live, but.... come on....
Anyways, good luck to the seps.

I haven`t *really* enjoyed a Seps album since Arise. Chaos AD was good, after that...The Derrick albums are all rubbish IMO. Heard a lot of praise about the new one but I`m just not hearing it. As for Soulfly, always thought they were rubbish although the new one is a step in the right direction. Both these bands are pretty irrelevant to me nowadays, couldn`t give a toss if they both split tomorrow.

Sepultura has integrity. Sooooo much integrity, its thick, its in the air, you could slice it with a knife. What roadrunner has done to them is a crime, it is punishable in a court of law. But even with that Sepultura have triumphed in the face of adversity. Dante XXI is a phenomenal accomplishment. This band keeps improving on their unique and heavy sound. Anyone who likes metal owes it to themself to give Dante XXI a listen followed by a purchase. There just arn't many bands left like Sepultura.

It is weird though with no Max, or Igor in this band havnt really heard much of their new shit but I bet its good. Pretty gay what RR did to them glad they left. Soulfly, Ill Nino, and Chimaira need to leave, and I can't fucking believe Hatebreed is now signed with them it just doesnt seem right. It really seems that RR dont treat everyone equally and thats not the right way to do things pretty soon more and more bands are going to leave.

Fuck RR (this is their site isn't it? LOL!!!!). When they look at these forums and see peoples opinions of just pure shit talking and gatred, no wonder they have their heads up their asses. As for Dante XXI, That is a good album. It has alot of great songs and is different then the usual run of the mill. I don't know why you all are such fucking cry babies about max. Max has a kick ass album out with soulfly and he has a sick guitar player and they are making kick ass music. Thats good enough for me. Sepultura are doing the same. For me I am glad they split up because now we get twice the kick ass music with different styles. Nothing wrong with that. Now like I said before, the best thing that could ever happen is if all these fuckers squash all the beef and the two bands get together and practice for some huge as concert and play all the songs from both bands and mix it up. I would have no problem seeing max and derrick both singing one of the new sepultura songs or seeing them mix the line up every couple of songs and just have a whole lot of ass kicking. That would be the sickest show ever but these fuckers got to have their egos and cannot see the bright light out there. A show like that would not only be legendary but I would fly anywhere in the world to go see that shit!!!

Derrick Green should shut his fucking hole. The reason RR probably gave up on Sepultura after Max left was they knew that Sep had a harcore following and that no singer could replace Max, may as well cut thier losses. Not a lot of bands lose thier lead vocalist and recover very well from it. Could you imagine if Tom Araya left SLAYER and Kerry King got some shluff to come in and try to pick up the vocals?? I don't think the response would be too overwhelming, and its unfortunate that record companies, Roadrunner included, dont have a positive outlook for a situation like that, but they'd rather cut thier losses and focus on thier next new money maker cause to them its all about the $$. And as for this shitfucker interviewer saying that "Every single SOUFLY album I've heard always makes me feel that they're constantly doing the same old thing" , has he even listened to "Primitive" or "Prophecy". I dont hear any latin horn section on any new Sepultura, as corny as it may have sounded, it sure was interesting and cool to hear mixed in with heavy guitars, unlike the Koto drummer on "Against". Sepultura is turning into the new Meagdeth, pretty soon it will just be Andreas with a bunch of scabs playing festivals in Sao Paulo.

i hate opeth not just cause of the new album. i hate opeth cause they are boring, overhyped, boring, trendy, nothing special, boring, and did i mention they were boring? people treat opeth like they are gods and legends when they are just another shitty melodeath band from sweden. they are whats wrong with metal cause you see newer bands trying to be melodic cause of them and in flames. if you want to talk about metal legends, lets get back on topic and talk about sepultura. even roots, sep's worst album sounds better then opeth. dante xxi is sep's best since chaos ad. derrick green rules. the key member in sepultura was never max, it's igor.

Everyone I show your ridiculous emails to thinks you are a joke. Looks like you didn't "push" Chimaira hard enough. You, (or Roadrunner), had to have done something fucked up for all these bands: Deicide, Suffocation, Obituary, Sepultura, Type O Negative, and Chimaira to want to get out. You claim that you wanted these bands to stick around, problem is they didn't want to because of the lable's treatment. If the shoe fits......... I only "beleive" what i'm fed bro.

So, after I read couple of good reviews for "Dante XXI", I listen to it and yes, it is Sepultura best after Max, but it isn't even close to the Max era! "Beneath The Remains", "Arise", "Chaos AD"... That's what I called Sepultura!

This thread has fuck all to do with Opeth. Opeth are one of the most original and talented bands out there right now.
I love the way some people sit here posting about "How we don't know how the industry works" bullshit. You don't have a fucking clue what I know, and what exactly do you do? Shine shoes for a living?
As was clearly stated yes, the industry is about money (obviously seeing as we aren't living in fucking wonderland) but that doesn't mean we all have to sit here and thank labels like Roadrunner for promoting shit and dropping talent. Pop bands are promoted to fuck but do I want to go and listen to pop? Do I fuck.
Roadrunner have one of the worst reputations out there. Chimaira, Sepultura, Amen, Glassjaw, Fear Factory, Deicide, Type O Negative and loads more have plenty to say about them.
Wait until they're dropping your favourite band like a hot brick and then kiss their arses. I live in the real world but it doesn't mean I have to like it or condone it.

hey mate,
Sepultura is that old band I used to see in Sao Paulo from the country side wich used to kick some majour ass, back when I were 13-14 years old.
these moments lives in my heart and to think that the band is not the same it is kind of sad, like something is missing.
Sorry but you can not replace that at all.
But from day one I respected the choice and your work.
there is this funny chapter thou that I would like to explain and apologize.
It were completelly non intentional, and I`m sure it did hurt your feelings.
In your last show in Nagoya Japan, a few years back
There were this security staff who were very abusive to the brasilian kids on the first role.
I prepared a mouthfull of spit to wash his face, but exactly when I pushed that out someone bumped on my back and that shot went up, and you came down taking the full load in the face.
