GUNS N' ROSES Play Surprise Acoustic Gig In New York City - May 19, 2006
A BLABBERMOUTH.NET visitor by the name of Matt Goldenberg has submitted the following report:

"Okay... I can't really tell you how I found out or how I got on the list without betraying a friend's confidence, but I got a call around 6 p.m. [on Thursday, May 18] that Rosario Dawson, the actress from 'Rent', 'Alexander', etc., was having a birthday party tonight at a small club near my apartment [in New York City] that I'm told is called The Plumm (I feel like an idiot but I honestly have never seen a name on the marquee and now I can't find a club called The Plumm on CitySearch.com, so I apologize if that's not right) and that GUNS N' ROSES WERE GOING TO PLAY. Some of my co-workers and I were able to get our names on the list. I was told to keep my mouth shut because it was all supposed to be a secret.

"Anyways, I have been here once or twice before, and it's a pretty small, chic nightclub. It has two floors and holds maybe 800, 900 people tops — someone told me capacity is actually around 500 people, I don't know how accurate that is and tonight, it was definately filled wwwaaaayyyy beyond capacity. I don't mean to make light of a tragedy but if God forbid there had been a fire, it would have been The Station x10.

"So doors are at 11 p.m. and we show up around 12:30 a.m. and... we're told we can't go in. Allegedly Axl [Rose, GUNS N' ROSES frontman] got into a fight with a clubgoer (I can't verify this) and they subsequently shut down the doors. Of the dozen or so people I was with, all but my friend Ken split. It was at that point that Ken had the brilliant idea that maybe now they would let us in since there was just two of us. We pleaded with a bouncer who verified that we were actually on the list and — yes! — we were in.

"Like I said, the place was packed, but we managed to find another good friend who had a table up front near the stage. The joint was crawling with celebrities: Kid Rock, Mickey Rourke, Eric Balfour, and God knows who else. On the way up I heard buzz first that the original band was there (which I knew was B.S.), and then buzz that it was just Axl and Izzy [Stradlin] and Matt Sorum (which seemed feasible in light of Axl's recently making-nice with both former Gunners). I saw Dizzy [Reed, GNR keyboardist] wandering around before we took our spot upfront, maybe five or ten feet from where the band was and right next to Del James [Axl's longtime friend/assistant].

"The band finally came a little after 1 a.m. I think. The stage was incredibly small and everyone surged forward to the point where tables were knocked over; my legs and feet are currently soaked in champagne and God knows what else. Anyway, Izzy and Matt were NOT there (or if they were, they didn't play), and if Brain [drummer] was there, I didn't see him, either.

"But Axl, Robin [Finck], Richard [Fortus], Tommy [Stinson], Bumblefoot, Dizzy and Chris [Pittman] all took the stage. Everyone played acoustically except Robinwho played a semi-hollow Gibson, and Tommy, who played his usual bass; for 'Knockin' on Heaven's Door', Robin and Richard switched instruments. Chris and Dizzy played maracas, congos, tambourines, and occasionally the keyboard, which was crammed in the corner. Axl introduced the show as the 'karaoke version' of GN'R as a movie screen-sized monitor with all his lyrics was behind him.

"Everyone seemed to be in a great mood; they played some old tunes from 'Lies' that they haven't done since Slash was in the band, and Axl said they had learned the songs just 20 minutes before arriving at the club.

"Before 'I.R.S.', Axl asked the band if they felt like trying it even though they hadn't rehearsed it, and Tommy screamed out 'I'm fucking fearless, I'll try anything!' The three solos in 'November Rain' were handled as they have been (Richard Fortus does the first one, Robin Finck does the second one, and Bumblefoot does the big closing one) except that Richard and Bumblefoot played their solos acoustically, which sounded pretty awesome.

"Needless to say, the whole place went apeshit... it was a really intimate, really amazing show and a nice way to close out the week after the four Hammerstein gigs. I don't remember the precise order of the set list but here is what they played:

01. Used To Love Her
02. Mr. Brownstone
03. Welcome To The Jungle
04. You're Crazy ('Lies' version, not the 'Appetite' version)
05. Patience
06. Knockin' On Heaven's Door
07. The Blues
08. I.R.S.
09. Sweet Child O' Mine
10. November Rain (Axl on keyboards)
11. Paradise City

"I don't think I missed any songs; the whole show lasted a little over an hour, maybe. At the end, Axl came back out and said, 'I forgot to do something because I'm a fucking idiot,' before bringing Rosario Dawson out on stage and leading the audience in a rendition of 'Happy Birthday.' Then Rosario grabbed the mike and went nuts — 'THEY'VE NEVER PLAYED ALL ACOUSTIC, THIS IS HISTORY IN THE MAKING, HOW MUCH DOES THIS MAN FUCKING ROCK,' etc."

By that logic, Judas Priest is a cover band. They don't have any original members. Iron Maiden only have one.

You say Maiden would also be a coverband since Harris is the only original member but you're forgetting that most of the others have been in the band for over ten years and helped build the band to what it is now.

During the same 10 years Axl sat on his ass and now he's simply feeding off the succes he had with Slash and Duff. I mean... Of all the people that go to their gigs just how many are interested in hearing the Chinese Democracy song? Not many I believe.

Axelites are definitely among the dumbest people on earth...

I completely agree that this incarnation comes off as a Vegas-type act. Other than the fact that they tour, it's no different than a David Lee Roth playing Van Halen songs in a Vegas show. Hire some musicians, tweak the songs a little and throw in some fancy stage effects...

I think Axl will have to deal with this perception as long as his act is based on covering the older GNR catalogue. What I can't understand is why he would want to play old school GNR songs and face this criticism when he supposedly has all these new songs ready to go. I thought he was the one who wanted to grow musically and leave the past behind ? Guess not.

"this generation has no music."

That's been the case for about 15 years now. Alternative became mainstream. Nirvana paved the way for making garbage popular. Alternative is right - "music" for the past 15 years has been nothing but an alternative to good music.

I don't know people, maybe you'd better go and attend a therapy or something.
Axl's doing well right now and you're just envious of him, my dear babes.
You'll see, in 3 months, maybe 5 Axl will grow in power and those "Pussycat Dolls" from Velvet Revolver will lick his arse and beg him to take them back.
It's good that Izzy has started thinking and got his ass into a biz again.
Long live the king my dear friends, just wait and pay attention.
They'll be back soon...

WOW! Axl's correct! His new band of no-namers is a karaoke version of GNR! See guys, even Axl admits his cover band is a total sham.

Then Axl said: "I forgot to do something because I'm a fucking idiot..."

Yes Axl, you are an idiot! What you forgot to do was invite the real members of GNR to your show! Since Slash, Duff, and Izzy weren't there to play, you were forced to take the stage with whatever musicians you could find in 10 minutes...oops I mean your new band.

And the Axl bashers, most of them who were 5 years old when the last GnR album came out, and have never actually seen a GnR concert, continue to bash. Get a life people. Axl didn't kick anybody out of the band and so he has every right to find new musicians and continue on. 10 years have passed, those guys had every chance in the world to patch things up and get back in the band, but they didn't. Thats their loss. Now its time for Axl to get on with his life and continue doing what we thanked him for doing in the 80's and early 90's. What part of that don't you bashers understand?

And that was album of covers!
They last original release came out before 15 fuckin' years!
They have some great songs:
"Paradise City"
"Welcome To The Jungle"
"Sweet Child Of Mine"
"Night Train"
"Patience"
"Live And Let Die" (cover!)
"You Could Be Mine"
"Don't Cry"
"Yesterday"
"Knockin' On A Heavens Door" (also a cover!)
"Right Next Door To Hell"
"Perfect Crime"
"November Rain"
"Estrangled"
"Dead Horse"
"Don't Damn Me"
"The Garden"
"Civil War"
"Garden Of Eden"

All in all, 19 good songs on 3 releases (one double and one EP) from the late '80-is and beginning of the '90-is and so much fuse about them!
So many BETTER bands never get that chance!
I love G'N'R, but I'm sick and tired of all this Axl and co. bullshit!

I wish I was there. I'm still beaming from having caught the Hammerstein show on the 12th. They should really tear up Europe this summer. I don't see these full reunion rumors taking shape, or even a reunion with everyone except Steven. I think Axl will tour Europe in the summer, release the CD in the fall, and then tour the states. If everything goes well, I doubt we would even see a reunion until well after that tour is over, if ever. Based on the quality of what passes for mainstream rock now, combined with the goodness of the new songs, ChinDem should easy sell millions.

The new band is awesome, and although some debate whether it should be called GNR, they would be an excellent band whatever they call themselves.

And smack that Tommy Hilfiger down. Smack him!!

At the moment, Axl is curiosity, a recluse out of hiding and as a result, a celebrity in the true sense, famous for being famous, and nothing more.

The "original" band was mediocre at best. Comparing them to the Rolling Stones is like comparing Oasis to The Beatles. If the band had stayed together and continued to put out material, we wouldn't be talking about them right now.

Actually, Oasis is a good comparision - an overnight success that maintained for a few years by staying entertaining and controversial in the press, had a few good songs, (none of which are as great as people remember them being), lost all their members, and on name value alone still sell concert tickets, but can't sell records or chart singles to save their lives.

The G N'R name holds a certain iconic value - they self destructed before they got completely lame, so people want to see the "legend". Those too young to know better think that Axl was the magic ingredient. Those of us who were around from the early Troubador days know that they were a sum of their parts, which included a lot of people who aren't around anymore besides just Slash, Izzy and Duff.

If the kids want to believe the hype - let them.

Chinese Democracy will sell a few units (maybe 2M) , Axl will fill a few arenas, and then when the hype has faded, he will fade back into obscurity because there isn't any "there" there.

Well said. It's true, GNR was starting to get lame right when it ended. The spaghetti incident is the point where I lost interest in them...They just weren't the crazy band they used to be anymore.

I do believe that the original lineup could have come back stronger had they stayed together...10 years is alot of time to recharge your battery! It could've been great, but-typical of rock n'roll- all good bands end up finding a way to disappoint the fans!

Axl is a talented guy, and I'm sure his new songs are very good, but I just can't except it as GNR.
