ALICE IN CHAINS Joined By SMASHING PUMPKINS, SCREAMING TREES Singers At L.A. Tour Opener - May 19, 2006
SMASHING PUMPKINS frontman Billy Corgan, former SCREAMING TREES vocalist Mark Lanegan and VELVET REVOLVER bassist Duff McKagan (ex-GUNS N' ROSES) were among the guest musicians performing with ALICE IN CHAINS at the official kick-off date of their first tour since 1996 in Los Angeles on Thursday (May 18), according to Reuters.

The sold-out show at the 450-capacity Roxy Theater venue was the first of five that will take the band to clubs in San Diego (May 19), Chicago (May 21), Boston (May 22) and New York (May 23). The band played a last-minute "open rehearsal" in Seattle on Tuesday. A European jaunt begins on May 26 in Lisbon.

The economical 70-minute performance centered on tunes from the band's breakthrough 1992 album "Dirt", including "Down in a Hole" (sung by Corgan), "Rooster" (Lanegan), "Junkhead", "Angry Chair", "Would?" and the final song "Them Bones". Others included "Man in the Box" and "We Die Young" from 1990's "Facelift", and "Again" and show opener "Sludge Factory" from the band's final studio release, the self-titled 1995 "three-legged dog" album.

Mark Lanegan is a fucking great singer. Not into Billy Corgan at all - he always seemed to fucking trendy and false to me. Its good to see Alice in Chains touring again, even if it is wothout Layne. I know some people are pissed about it, but if the guys like playing those songs together, then why the fuck should they have to stop just because it isn't all four members? I'm sure if they could reunite with Layne, they would, but that can't happen so this is the next best thing. Its like the qhole drama about Queen touring even though Freddie is dead. Bands don't quit if a drummer dies, they just get a fucking new one...

Smashing Pumpkins does have a bunch of great songs, but I really cant imagine Corgans voice together with AIC. I would like to hear a bootleg from it to see how that sounds.

Dude, comparing a drummer's impact on a band's signature sound to a singer's is a joke. And I'm a drummer.

GrotesqueRocket
Not entirely accurate dude. Singer's should'nt be the main focus of a band, and a singer doesn't always define a (good) band's sound, not conventionally anyways. Look at Rush. Look at Tool. Look at Slayer. Bands like that- they wouldn't be the same without those drummers. Look at Nickelback.......just kidding. but a band like Alice In Chains, it was different. Layne defined the whole band's sound, but yet the remaining members still MADE that sound also. Layne could have sung with any band and that band would have fucking been great. Such as Mad Season and Class of '99. Layne was/is Alice In Chains.

Absolutely anything.

Not the same without Layne but that is his fault. All great musicians and I would love to see them do AIC anytime.

Holy shit. You are completely wrong.

And yes this tour is blasphemous, but at least they really do honor Layne at each show and actually have suprise guests play with them, so it's really like Jerry said, an Alice N' Friends tour.

However, it is not to go unoticed that their 1st priority of this whole idea is because they weren't making any money before. So now each of them needs to cash in on the whole Alice thing. Jerry already did this on his solo tours and it didn't work, and now realizes he needs to USE the 'Alice In Chains' name to get noticed again, and for the other members, they're running short on cash.
I smell desperation, but you know what, as long as they're playing my favorite tunes, godspeed to them.

I wouldve loved to see the remaining members of AIC + Mark Lanegan!!!!! You should all check out his solo stuff.

I NEED to get my hands on some audiotaping!

And no, it wont ever be the same without Layne. But if you're a real fan and know anything about their situation, you know this is not a moneygrab. They could all live of their rolyalty checks and perhaps they will in a couple of months time when they put AIC in the closet. Remember, this is (probably) all temporary. We fans get a chance to see our favorite songs played live in a way that honors Layne as well.

i got lucky and scored a presale ticket.... it was so fuckin sick.. they sounded amazing, and the singer wasnt half bad, billy corgan did a decent job, but he kinda fumbled some lyrics on rooster.. the other dude didnt seem to happy to be up on stage, but he was pretty cool too haha.... sean kinney is the man!!!!!! over all, probably one of the sickest shows ive ever had the pleasure of attending... even though it was soo fuckin hot and crowded in there... So you have access to everyone's bank accounts?? Get a fucking grip!

They're doing this as a tribute to Layne. If you and all the other whiney fucks would read what fans who have ACTUALLY BEEN to a show post here and elswhere on the net you'd see what's really going on at the show.

And to all the negative fucks who write the SAME tired old stupid/racist shit on each and every AIC news post...get over it already! We all know your personally affronted that they had the audacity to do what THEY wanted with THEIR band, but try not clicking on an AIC news article...you might actually have a nice day.

Like I said until they put roller skates on Laynes corpse and wheel him around on stage like Eddie the 'eh....so that I can truley see the onriginal AIC all on one stage at one time...I am out.

Billy Corgan....what the fuck is that about...that whinney ass uncle fester butter faced alien."

couldnt have said it any fucking better!!! NO LAYNE=NO AIC!
i would respect and support this if it was just the 3 ORIGINAL members performing. i think jerry is vocally capable of pulling it off himself but instead allows this "tribute to layne" to become a fucking free for all at the expense of a dead man who has no say. these guest vocalists they chose are all jokes & pale in comparison to layne, a man who, drugs aside, has done more for music than anyone i can think of. to me, their music is sacred and shouldnt be used for profit or to kickstart dying careers. let layne and aic rest in peace.

I just watched Vh1's classic in concert w/ heart.I find it sick that the singer who inspired dime bags murder is with Jerry and the boys and to dedicate the performance to Dime bag and Layne was just bullshit. All the singers sucked. If they are gonna do something like that why don;t they make a contest out of it with different singers and put it on T.V.They can get that pussy Dave navvaro back on there or maybe just dig up layne's body and put whats left on stage,it would be better than the shit I saw tonite.

what a fucking disgrace of a concert right. phil is a piece of shit.
what they are trying to do is simply..IMPOSSIBLE. layne doesnt need a tribute in the form of a reunion tour with these assboogers trying to extend their 15mins of fame. i can definently think of more respectful ways of honoring this man other than trying to further cash in on what was once the greatest band of all time. i understand jerry, sean & mike did not get to fully tour in their heyday due to laynes drug problem but still..the way its being presented is just offensive to me.

Billy Corgan is not false or 'trendy', though its fair enough to disern his voice with aic as it is very much a different voice. Anyone who thinks his work is depressing is quite clearly deaf

"The Pumpkins were 10 times the band aic were!!"

yeah they were good call adams, tho it may be 100 times il have to look that one up.

''Okay let's see--would you take a band lead by a singer who's influenced just about every hard rock vocalist these days, and whose guitarist is easily one of the best songwriters of his kind, or would you take some goth-friendly fruitcake parading band led by a bald guy who is intentionally trying to avoid normality and enjoys hiring weak musicians like that one Asian guy who's guitar chops are equivalent to that of a two-year guitar player with about zero experience?

You can have the latter, the Pumpkins were always grunge's biggest joke.''

many of today's up and coming bands are heavily influenced by the pumpkins, just so you know.

james iha kicks ass, im sure he'd kick your ass, but you see if you'd actaully use your ears u'd realise the pumpkins werent about 'brutal' solos. Bands that do that are basically covering for the fact that they cannot write. oh and he never 'hired' james, they formed the band mutually, maybe next time ul wanna read a news article before you try and offend a genius.

lmao 'guitar chops' shows the depth to your musical perception, doesnt it.

''You can have the latter, the Pumpkins were always grunge's biggest joke'' - yeah thats very funny, but if you'd once again care to listen to maybe a song (clap along with your rudimentary stumps if you must) you'd realise that they arent actaully grunge, i dont remember anybody saying they were and if so they were wrong. but yes 'grunge' was a joke tho.

Billy is simply better than anyone else and i think layne would have been over the moon about it, cos he would respect real music you see.
