SLAYER: Warm-Up Dates Will Not Be Rescheduled After All - May 24, 2006
SLAYER's previously announced sold-out "warm-up" dates — June 2 at New Oasis in Sparks, NV and June 3 at Senator Theatre in Chico, CA — will **NOT** be rescheduled to take place following the Denver date at the end of July, despite a previous announcement to the contrary. Scheduling conflicts are believed to be the reason behind this decision, which was triggered by the postponement of the tour's start date so as to allow SLAYER bassist/vocalist Tom Araya sufficient time to recover from a recent minor gall-bladder surgery.

As previously reported, Araya's two-hour May 5 procedure forced SLAYER to suspend the June 6 launch of this summer's Unholy Alliance Tour, which also features LAMB OF GOD, MASTODON, CHILDREN OF BODOM and THINE EYES BLEED. The trek will instead kick off June 15 in Camden, New Jersey, and run through July 26 in Denver.

SLAYER's still-untitled follow-up to "God Hates Us All", which was released on Sept. 11, 2001, is due July 25 via American Recordings. For the project, the group reteamed with longtime collaborator Rick Rubin to executive produce their first new album with their four original members since 1990's "Seasons in the Abyss".

SLAYER will preview their first album in five years with an EP exclusively available at Hot Topic stores. The album will include "Cult", the lone new song the band plans to play live on the upcoming Unholy Alliance Tour.

I thought Divine through God Hates us all was all great metal music. Just as good as Reign and Seasons. Paul andDave are equally great incredible drummers. Actually I thought Paul had a little bit better chops, but Dave perfected the style with Reign In Blood. Hell, they are both great drummers. I just do not get the sellout term. Anyone who says that must not have listened to the cd's released in the 90's. EVERY song was incredible, at least in my eyes.
And as far as beastie boys "no sleep 'til brooklyn" solo and Sum 41, who cares, King had some fun and made some money, SO WHAT? He deserves it. 20 plus years of playing and every tune ruled in my eyes.
These posts make me laugh every time I read them.

To the dark lord who loves Hell Awaits and doesn't like God Hates Us All .... Hell Awaits, by Slayer standards, is a weak apprentice album. Apart from the title track which I like, the rest of it is very average. Long bloated songs with non-memorble riffs, horrible tinny production, shitty vocals, pseudo-evil lyrics, below par guitar solos. Hell Awaits is not among the better metal albums of all time, they were only learning their trade when they made it. Your perception of Hell Awaits has been distorted by nostalgia in remembering the 'good old days' of thrash. I don't that much like God Hates Us All, but overall it is better than Hell Awaits. A much stronger album than the cartoonish pretend evil and inferior songwriting of Hell Awaits.

Yes, in my opinion Hell Awaits is an apprentice album because Reign in Blood through to Divine were so much better. Slayer were on Hell Awaits (in the early days of thrash) learning how to write evil songs, how to produce their sound, how to write lyrics.

but it's not a bad album. For its time it is quite good. I exagerated my criticism of it to piss Lord of Darkness off, because he and others are too harsh on God Hates Us All. What the fuck is wrong with that album? - a few bad songs, sure, but still very heavy the rest of it. Disciple is at least as heavy as anything on Hell Awaits, God Sends Death would have fitted onto Seasons, as would Seven Faces etc.

To glorify Hell Awaits and trash God Hates Us All in that way seems mindless. Nostalgia, if thats would it is for some people, is lame.

Slayer have stayed true to their roots while adding some elements of the era when they released Divine, Diabolus and GHUA. During that same period, Metallica and Megadeth went Hard Rock then alternative then try to fool people "Hey we're cool we're still metal we're here do you remember. For anyone to tell me that HELL AWAITS is an inferior SLAYER record, you’ve got to be kidding me… The ONLY thing that could have been a little bit better was the production, but it's not that bad. Anyhow if you listen to HELL AWAITS and GOD HATES US ALL from a musical point of view, HELL AWAITS is superior to GHUA. The riffs on most of GHUA are simple compared to the music on HELL AWAITS. Some of the music on HELL AWAITS was genius, like a classical composition with all the different notes and time signatures! As far as the solo’s on HELL AWAITS, to a "guitar hero" they might be accused of not following the correct rules or music theory BUT that's what makes them sound EVIL!!! Also, Tom Araya had a way better vocal approach and he made those lyrics sound convincing! The vibe was DARK!! He would change his voice depending on the part of the song, he showed way more range compared to the way he sounds today. Now he’s just “screamo” in a monotone voice and it doesn’t sound sincere, no feeling like he had on HELL AWAITS.

Back in those days SLAYER was young and not rich yet, they were simply more into their art. Today they are older and some even have their own families, which honestly makes them mellower, they also have more money so they are not as “hungry” as they used to be. That is life, I'm NOT trying to bash them for that, I'm just pointing out the reality of things and that truly affects their music. The band has become more like a job, business first, music second. Back in the days of HELL AWAITS they were still into Extreme Metal and their peers were bands putting out great albums like: VENOM "Black Metal", MERCYFUL FATE "Don't Break The Oath", POSSESSED "Seven Churches", DESTRUCTION "Infernal Overkill", SODOM "In The Sign Of Evil", DARK ANGEL "Darkness Descends", CELTIC FROST "Morbid Tales", BATHORY, etc. In other words, they had to be "on their toes" to be on top of that scene. Even Kerry King said in an interview, he took credit for being pioneers of “DEATH METAL” but also said that they are no longer like that.

Another thing, that was the era when they toured with a lot of those other killer Thrash/Death/Black Metal bands! Today SLAYER always picks mediocre bands to open up. Why not bring a true METAL band like KREATOR, DIMMU BORGIR, DESTRUCTION, VENOM, CELTIC FROST, MORBID ANGEL, SODOM, VADER, EXODUS, TESTAMENT, KING DIAMOND, etc, I hate to compare SLAYER to METALLICA but it’s kind of like METALLICA did on that last tour, remember the opening bands? It was LINKIN PARK, LIMP BISKIT, THE DEFTONES & MUDVAYNE. Why doesn’t METALLICA bring SLAYER on tour??! It’s basically the same thing. It sucks, the METAL scene could be a lot stronger but NO, this is the reality of the “big” Metal scene. Nowadays when interviews ask SLAYER what bands do they like, as an oldschool SLAYER fan, it’s really strange to see the lame bands they namedrop and support! Disappointing to say the least.

Today SLAYER are on a higher level of success but they are no longer pioneers, they are just trying to keep up or crossover to the masses of TRENDY POSEUR fans of the bigger selling "Metal" or "Hardcore" bands like SYSTEM OF DOWN, METALLICA, HATEBREED, KILLSWITCH ENGAGE, SLIPKNOT, ATREYU, DISTURBED, AVENGE SEVENFOLD, and so forth. It's no wonder why the new SLAYER ep is going to be EXCLUSIVLEY AVAILABLE at HOT TOPIC!! Sure there are a few other reputable "Metal" bands available there but they're NOT exclusive to the mall-core head quarters! That’s a marketing move that proves what I’m saying is true.

The truth is todays SLAYER is NOT in the same state of mind that gave them the edge they had on HELL AWAITS! Hopefully with Dave Lombardo back, the new album will lean towards more the Extreme Metal classic SLAYER essence again. On GHUA, the best song is “Disciple”, if the whole record had that quality it still would not be as amazing as HELL AWAITS but I for one would NOT be saying that I was DISSAPOINTED with the album. I would give them credit for putting out a good record. But that’s not the case, overall, the last two SLAYER records are NOT up the standards of their early releases. Fortunately SLAYER recorded HELL AWAITS in that period of time because that is a moment in time they will never capture again.

I'm with when you talk about that period 84-87, but Celtic Frost's new album from what I've heard doesn't impressed me at all. Destruction since they reformed haven't put out a decent record they rehash the same thing as back in 85. Slayer tried to evolve, to some things have woked very well some others haven't work that well but overall I enjoy listening to both album. If there is an album that may be weaker it is Diabolus, seems like they weren't as inspired when they wrote that album. But GHUA has some great tunes; 7 faces, New Faith, Blood Line, Disciple and God send Death, In my opinion can stand right beside Hell Awaits, At Dawn They Sleep, Kill Again and Praise Of Death

Infernal lord, I agree with some of your points. The riffs on HA were more complicated. Vocals had more range, Tom screams too much on GHUA. A bit boring.

True they are in a different state of mind, its 20 years later. But give them credit that GHUA is still heavy. I don't see how anyone could say it is a 'commercial' album. I've never heard Hatebreed or most nu-metal, so don't know if they 've been influenced or not. But I have heard SOAD, Killswitch, Avenged7, and Slayer don't sound like them.

Slayer cannot take old 80s thrash bands on tour, cos those bands are not popular anymore, not much, and cannot bring in many crowds. Can't blame Slayer for that. But a Slayer / Morbid Angel tour would be good.

Slayer has rarely listened to other metal bands for at least 10-15 years. King and Hanneman are quite arrogant in that way. As for Tom, he doesn't hardly even listen to metal, but he's always been like that.
