JUDAS PRIEST Talk About The Making Of 'Nostradamus'
- May 29, 2006
|
|
|
JUDAS PRIEST have revealed more details about their upcoming first conceptual album, which is based upon the life and predictions of the 16th century French prophet Nostradamus. In a May 24, 2006 appearance on the "Rockline" syndicated radio show, PRIEST frontman Rob Halford and guitarist Glenn Tipton spoke about the songwriting process for the CD and their touring plans, which are expected to include a performance of the entire album from beginning to end at each show on the trek. A couple of excerpts from the "Rockline" appearance follow (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET):
On the songwriting process for "Nostradamus":
Tipton: "We've been considering a concept album for quite a while now, and our manager actually brought up the subject of Nostradamus, which we're all interested in. There's so many moods. The actual album is based upon his life as opposed to his predictions and things like that. It's all about his life, which is really interesting — full of incident and drama. We all felt very strongly there were so many moods there to tackle that it would make a great subject matter for a concept album."
Halford: "It's gonna be great, because, as Glenn was saying, he's [Nostradamus] a very mysterious character. We're gonna convey that kind of atmosphere in the music. Glenn, K.K. [Downing, guitar] and myself have already been writing back in England, and the early roots of 'Nostradamus' — they just sound incredible. We are doing some things differently. It will be a metal/rock opera-type production, so it will be strong. It will be everything you love about PRIEST. We're looking forward to it."
Tipton: "We're well on the way [in the songwriting department]. We've got a large portion of it completed on the writing side. I can safely say it's probably the most unique thing we've done. We've got an abundance of material, and we'll paste it all together and we'll shortly go into the studio and begin putting it all down."
Halford: "It's great. We're stoked. I can hear the songs in my head right now. It's gonna be incredible. The thing about Nostradamus is that, as difficult as it will be [to write a concept album based on his life], and it's a joy to face that challenge, it's a little easier in some sense [than writing a regular album], because you've got your plot. You've got your whole thing there laid out for you — you've got this real living, breathing person, who's now dead. But you've got the whole story of his life. And you just explore that and you try and find a way to kind of bring that about in a musical presentation. So the writing process is still the much the same. The three of us get together in a room, and we're talking about each particular moment in Nostradamus' life and we're trying to fit in the moods and emotions to those particular chapters."
"It's more about his life, because everybody knows him more about his prophecies. He's never really gone out of the news in hundreds and hundreds of years, and there are some that believe in his prophecies and some that don't. His life was a difficult life. He went through a lot of rough times. He was a brilliant doctor of medicine — he partly cured the great plague of Europe, he was able to save thousands of people, but couldn't save his wife and kids, which is tragic. And he was chased all over the country by the Roman Catholic Church. There's a ton of stories that you can really investigate musically."
On touring plans:
Halford: "Well, as ever, when 'Nostradamus' is completed, we're gonna go out and tour with that. It will be kind of unique, because we're intending and hoping that we'll be able to perform the complete 'Nostradamus' piece from front to back, which is something that PRIEST has never done. We were saying earlier today to our friends at VH1 that we're always looking for some new adventures and this will be one of them. So when we do go out with 'Nostradamus', that's what you'll experience — you'll have the whole recording from front to end. So it'll be that, and I dare say after that there'll be some more PRIEST touring covering all of our extensive back catalog of songs."
Tipton: "We wanna go out next time and do a completely different set, 'cause there's so many songs that people want us to play, and obviously there's only so much time we can play on stage. So we've got really a great setlist — potential setlist. We're going back to the real early days to draw songs from there. So we've got a lot of interesting projects ready to go."

This album is going to be phenomenal. Cannot wait for it, and another tour. Just don't know how much longer they'll tour though, their getting quite old. Hopefully they'll never stop, and if they must they'll just keep coming out on wheelchairs and shit.

Cool, cool stuff. It'll be intruiging, to say the least, to hear the eventual outcome of such an ambitious and adventurous project. Also pleasing not to hear a band of Priest's magnitude fall prey to complacency, especially at their age. I imagine their live show will dominate as well.

Play the Nosty stuff first. Do it up all theatrical with the staging and make it a real show. Then take breather for about 30 minutes and then come back play about an hour or so of the hits. It's a pretty simple concept that works great for Pink Floyd and Rush. Everybody leaves happy.
Can't wait for this concept album.

COMMENT | dayofdarkness posted by : Iron Metallideth 5/29/2006 1:17:53 PM You can't sue because someone else put out an album with the same title as one of yours, genius. For example, Dream Theater didn't (and couldn't have) sued Godsmack when they put out Awake, and I'm sure DT wasn't the first to use that title, nor was Godsmack the last. And Divine Empire's Nostradamus isn't about Nostradamus at all. Or, at least, reading the lyrics, the only thing their songs have in common with the old goat is that they both talk about destruction a fair bit.
Also, go back to ninth grade English class.
^^^ hmmm i am 32 years old now and i was 9th grade when i was 15 in 1990 and i graduated high school in 1993 :) is that you can come up with that ? so lame dude... and yes I do have Divine Empire "nostradamus" album and it is about the man who thinks he predict the end of the earth! That is why they wrote that song about him dumbass!

If they do this right, as in not doing a "King Diamond" remake and keeping to their own style, this is going to be a permanent hard-on!
I saw Halford in MSG w/ Maiden in 2000 -- he looks like hell, but oh, goddess, he can still shake the walls!!
I wouldn't worry about the title just yet, it's in the embryonic stage still.
(Ooooh, wouldn't it be cool if Iron Maiden did a concept album on the life of Eddie? whoo ha!)

Love both bands, but feel this could have been MAIDEN material (why didn' they cover it?). AOR was ok & I'm just curious about this one. Halford has lost some stage presence; he does his 'robot-like' singing too much. What happened to the old Halford singer?

I think that' s a good idea. " Angel of retribution " was ok but not great, it was too predictable and not nearly as exiting as their best works. So I thought that they would need something new for the next album, some new idea while still keeping their own style, and this might be it. There will certainly be some epic, long tracks which is a positive thing, I think Judas Priest is just the right band to do something like this. " Angel of retribution II " would have been a boring thing but this should work and I believe it will.

** NEWSFLASH ** NEWSFLASH ** NEWSFLASH **
Now Judast Priest comes out of the closet with this sensational idea of making a concept album about Nostradamus life beliveing it's the most brilliant and original idea ever and having everybody go "WHOA, COOL!!!"...

this has been done before a couple times, i think this will not do as well as angel of retrebution did and they will be right back at the drawing board, as for the classic priest stuff live well if they are going to play this whole concept album thats an hour right there figure and then you will still ( i bet ) get breakin the law, living after midnight and the 10 minute version of you got another thing coming. i dont have high hopes on this one.

It' s not like they' re going to write a book about Nostradamus. They' re going to make music, a record, you know, and if the lyrical concept has been used before by some other bands I don' t think that means much as long as the music sounds fresh as it hopefully will. Musically, Helloween have certainly taken something from Judas Priest, as well as from Iron Maiden, so recycling in these circles is not exactly anything new. Certain lyrical themes will always be present in heavy metal music anyway, so I would say it' s all about music and what the bands can do musically. I don' t have anything against Helloween but would Helloween exist without Iron Maiden, and then again, would Iron Maiden exist without Judas Priest ... and, would Judas Priest exist without Black Sabbath ? Everything' s kind of connected in this genre of music.

I thought my post had a quite obvious "sarcasm mode" to it. I was merely pointing it out cause blabber made such a big fuss about the story, while the idea wasn't really that original anyway.
Anyway, as for you asking wheather Helloween would exist without Maiden, I'd say probably so since neither Maiden nor Priest were ever a main influnce for Helloween. They were originally inspired by early 80ies thrash/speed metal and wanted to combine it a more melodical approach and generally 80's heavy metal. Surely there are elements in the Helloweens style that one could assume were inspired by Maiden merely because of Maiden's popularity but fact is some of the bands main influences was actually as much Queensryche, Sweet, The Beatles and Anthrax as Priest/Maiden. Only because Priest and Maiden were the biggest metal bands around doesn't mean other Helloween took more influence from them than from other bands.

I don´t want to insult your last work "Angel of retribution" but I want you to Know there are things that Rob can´t do like before, he´s my favorite singer, and he will be always the best for me, he´s been my inspiration to be a heavy metal singer. but studying him, I´ve noticed he can´t get the high tones very well, so he must fit his voice to his capacity, I know he still can sing very well, but in this album there were many things I didn´t like in his voice, those are things to fix for the next album.
Thanks
