METALLICA Debut New Song At Berlin Concert

METALLICA premiered a brand new song during their headlining appearance Tuesday (June 6) at Waldbuhne in Berlin, Germany. According to several fans that attended the gig, the as-yet-untitled track is about eight minutes long with a "killer main riff" and "lots of double-bass parts."
As on the first two dates on the band's current "Escape From The Studio '06" tour, METALLICA played their entire 1986 album, "Master of Puppets", at the show, including rarely performed tracks such as "Orion" and "Disposable Heroes". The concert's second encore also featured a rendition of the RAMONES classic "Commando", with members of support band AVENGED SEVENFOLD joining in on vocals.
The group's setlist for the Berlin show was as follows:

"Master of Puppets" came out in the spring of 1986 and was METALLICA's first gold album and mainstream success. It featured staples of the band's live set such as "Battery", "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" and the title track.
It was also the last METALLICA album to feature bassist Cliff Burton, who was killed later that year in a tour bus crash.
METALLICA will head back into the studio to resume work on their ninth studio effort after completing this summer's festival run.

That's what makes a great song! Along with what kind of hair stimulator Blahrz is using and what kind of hair cream Shames is using.
Metallica has sucked for the last 10 years and will continue to suck the life out of every concert they perform at. Pretty soon they'll be doing the reunion/greatest hit(s) tour and commercializing themselves like KI$$.
SOrry to all you Metallica LOVERS out there, but that is my opinion and I'm sticking with it like a blind date with your mom!!!

DUDE, you know absolutely nothing! What the fuck is Iron maiden then? Always the same boring tunes + they never change the setlist. Metallica changes the setlist every night. Metallica played a classic album, Iron maiden performed ONLY old songs from their golden era - That is what i call watering it down.
Metallica is playing the whole Master of puppets, every metal-head should love that. But no, there is always losers who always have to fuck about something.

Actually, best metal news I've heard in a while from two huge bands. Slayers Cult is awesome, esp ,the start of the song, and a new 8MIN! Metallica song w/ killer riffs and 2X bass, gotta hear the audio...but it does get my hopes up.

If i go to blue oyster cult , i don't want to hear a new song. but they usually play one or two. I think metallica should somehow keep repackaging their old material , like dio. I,m sure a live release at this point would satisfy the faithfull.

I'm pretty pumped about this because I'm curious as to what kinda stuff they are writing these days. However, St. Anger had lots of double bass and 8 minute songs, and we know how that went. Tell me the tuning, and if there is a solo. Thats the real info.

And you're obviously a moron, which that comment clearly confirms! The actual reason for them playing the entire MoP album on this tour is simply cause this year is the 10 YEARS ANNIVERSARY for that album, their first gold album, their last with cliff and by many considered their overall best. They wrote that album and have all the right to play it in its entireity as much as they want.
It's funny how the same people who for the last ten years has been complaining about anything Metallica does and saying they should go back to making metal still complains even now when they play mostly old material live and will probably still be complaining even if the next album turns out to be a kick ass metal album. Fucking miserable fucks!!

anniversary. I did call master of puppets a classic. Bands just have to realize when to stop making new music , and satisfy the people. Rush is another example , immpecable live band , countless classics under their belt. They do the 3 hour show, it satisfy's them to play the new stufff, and they satisfy the audience with the classics.

I can't help but laugh at some of the people who comment on this site...bashers mostly, provides for some entertainment: "FUCK THIS FUCK THAT!! EXCLAIMATION POINT!" Metallica helped MAKE metal what it is, it's fuckin funny to see how many people out there won't stop complaining about nothing.
Anyways now to comment on the actual article itself! Metallica has always been known as a band that's going to do whatever the hell they want! They don't give into trends and they don't stay stale; they arn't afraid to try new things. That's one of things I love about them. Sure their old material was GREAT, but as is their newer stuff. They're trying new things. "Fuel" can be considered one of their newer songs, it was on "Reload"...what an amazing song! Look at the aggression on "St. Anger"! Can you honestly say that the band is dead after listening to THAT? Metallica is stronger now more then ever...I personally can't wait till the new album. I'd also love to see it really succeed like everything else they've done. Won't it be hilarious to see how many of the now-bashers go out and buy the new album?

when he heard Load, broke down like a family member died. I felt his pain, the same thing had happened to me when i heard Presto from Rush. Total dissapointment that was indescribable. But i made the best of it. I faced the music (literally) and admitted that it was poor , very poor. I just wish die hard fans of metallica would admit their dissapointment at recent material. It is not a betrayl to be let down by a band.

I've been a fan since the Justice era, and I'll admit to being pretty disappointed in St. Anger, but for whatever reason I liked the Loads. Maybe its because I didnt compare them to the other albums, I listened to them on their own merit.
St. Anger, aside from a few moments here and there, isnt a very good record. I'll give you that. I'm still a loyal fan though, and some might say that makes me a "sheep"...maybe thats true, but it doesnt really bother me.

This news bodes very well for the prospects of a new album. At first I wasn't too keen on Metallica ditching Bob Rock as producer, but maybe they'll get some fire back with Rubin. He's not my favourite producer, he's pretty hit-and-miss as far as I am concerned, but maybe this partnership will gel.

it is the first step in coming "back into the fold' of your favorite band. The first step, admitting a band is not infallable. Some take things to extremes. I knew a U2 fan who through away an impressive collection when hearing "with or without you". I did respect the move, but thought it was extreme. The past glories can still be enjoyed by true fans.

The set shows the direction of the band right now. Nothing from St.Anger. Why? because they realised, that St.Anger sucked. So, they must regard it as a mistake and hopefully they learned out of it. Just one song from the whole Load/Reload-Double-Crap-Session, no "I disappear", "No Leaf Clover" or "Human". It's easy to figure out, why their set consisted mostly of 80ies-Thrash songs. This is the direction the band has taken now. You'll get a Thrash-Album by these guys, and this is, what they do best.
Can they still do it? It depends on a bands spirit. A highly motivated band that has got the talent to do it WILL do it. And the Rock Am Ring-concert convinced me. I've seen those guys several times in the last decade. This was their best concert since 1994 - by far. They understood, what their fans want, and it seems like they are having fun beeing the worlds greatest Heavy Metal-Band again. No more Alternativerockica or Mallcoreica - it's METALlica again.
And by the way - they got rid of their buddy Pop Rock, so I expect that they'll get some better advice now

i am not bashing the band, just telling what is true. And is true for countless bands who are fine in concert but recording output as of late leaves much to be desired. Case in point - i wittnessed a concert by scorpions, which i enjoyed immensely, i think they played one new song. But, the old stuff was super. They will never release another good album again. Is their legacy tarnished. Too some maybe. Eye to eye - an affront to all - band and listener alike. But you can't take away the past recordings of merit as blackout , sting, lovedrive etc.

A guy in my forum, who visited the berlin-gig just wrote this describtion of the "New Song", and generously I just translated it so you all can get a glimpse of it:
"For all you who are afraid that it might sound like something from St.Anger: this song had more riffs than the whole last album. It was diversified, had solos (guitar lead and bass solo) and great vocals.
The songwriting goes into the same direction as Master Of Puppets, or maybe further. Finally we've got some real Metal Riffs, no blues-parts, and then everything is very interlaced like in "And Justice For All"-times.
In think, the song was pretty long (6-7 minutes) but with a lot of breaks and killer riffs.
But most notably it was very diversified.
I'll have to listen to it again, because it wasn't really a catchy tune. "

Yeah A lot of people have heard of Black Sabbath. But they have not sold as many records as Metallica and Metallica brings in bigger crowds than when Black Sabbath headlines Ozzfest (with 20+ other bands in tow). And Metallica tickets are more expensive than Ozzfest.
So yeah, it IS a fact, Metallica has a bigger following.
I am not debating over who is more "influential" or whatever because both were huge influences on today's music, but of course, without Sabbath, there would have been no Metallica.

well considering its been 20 years since both metallica and slayer put out their best albums, maybe 2006 will be a great year for classic metal bands? i hope so. Anyone who thinks Sabbth does not have the biggest fan base in all of metal is just wrong period.

I think metallica has a larger active fanbase while the name black sabbath is further known amongst people, not necessarily meaning more fans.

was not questioning their live performance or the classic albums they have released. I was just saying that everyone knows in their heart that metallica will never make another good album. The same could be said of countless bands. Some say maiden, some say priest. It is not a slight but a fact of life like the sunrise and sunset.

ST. Anger was a fucking huge dissapointment. But with Rick Ruben giving input and the band actually recording with bassist Rob Trujillo (and not Bob Rock) i think we got one kick ass album instore.

It's been said Metallica quit being metal. That's true.
It's been said Metallica only made 4 REAL albums. Not true. They made 4 REAL metal albums, then 3 rock albums. Still albums. Still real.
Metallica sold out. That's been going on since 1982. Free yourselves and let it go. Changing your musical sound based on a bigger diversifacation of musical genre's isn't selling out. It's growing. So some people didn't like it. Oh well. A lot of people did. You win some, you lose some.
Metallica's "St. Anger" was shite. I kinda agree, I kinda don't. Production was shite. The arrangements of the songs was shite. The ideas were decent. A little more writting and a little less jamming would have made the songs kinda cool.

That was my favorite one. What does that make Dream Theater? Don't you think it's pretty fucking bad for a band to cover another band's ENTIRE album? I do. Yet everyone seems to just LOVE that idea. It's the 20th anniversary of their best album. They feel like playing it live. I think that's fucking awesome.

hey i agree about the eye make up! Robert Smith from the Cure is about the only one who can get away with makeup and not look stupid, tho i have to admit that Manson looks pretty cool the way he does his. album was'nt influential and classic. It just goes to show metallica are finally playing to their strengths and playing old material that satisfies the fans. Like the rolling stones, who were undoubtably one of the most influential bands of all time, both metallica and the stones will never make a good album again. Just play the classics and get on with it. THe stones know it, the eagles know it , def leppard know it, slayer know it,and probably even deicide know it. Being a top live draw is nothing to be ashamed of.

They´re not playing any Saint Anger songs? The new song was between Wherever I May Roam and the Unforgiven...
They are probably not tuning down for this one... this is a good sign cause it seems like they didn´t change their guitars during the set, judging that these two songs have the same tuning.
It might be a classic metallica influenced song after all... lets just hope...

I'm a pretty open-minded guy, so I'll definitely give the song (and the upcoming album) a chance. Honestly, though, Metallica don't do a whole lot for me anymore. I love the first five albums, but everything beyond that is sub-par. I don't care if the Loads were more blues-based. I love blues music and just saw Buddy Guy in concert last month. The problem I have with those albums is that many of the songs are filler. If they were trimmed or, perhaps, meshed together, the quality would improve. Still, if I want to listen to more bluesy songs, there are obviously better options.
St. Anger is downright terrible, in my opinion. In fact, in 2004, Hetfield himself criticized the album. I read the article here on Blabbermouth for those who actually have the time to look for it. I hated the riffs, the lyrics and the drum snare. I understand that the band was in a bad place and Hetfield was not feeling strong after rehab, but it's really hard to feel sorry for guys who live in million dollar homes and can take years off from work and not have to worry about funds drying up. So, lyrically speaking, I just couldn't get into the whole "feel sorry for me" crap. I, along with everyone else who has a normal life, have my own problems and don't have the options that Metallica does.
Still, I'm looking forward to hearing the new stuff. They've been dabbling with new riffs since the '04 tour, plus Trujillo is a pretty talented guy. It might not be great, but I wouldn't be surprised if I liked it more than the previously mentioned albums.

Metallica.... I like them, granted I am young being that I was born the same yr MoP came out. Personally I think they are in the right direction. As much as I hate to admit it they are not going to be as good as they were with Cliff, but that doesnt mean they will suck either. I actually am really looking forward to the new stuff. Even if pickleddevileggs disagrees with me, it doesnt matter, thats his opinion and this is mine, this is a place to state our opinions. I think this new arecord will rock actually, even if it isnt as good. As long as its better than St. Anger I will be relieved. But then again maybe im just easy to please.

Go easy on me people as this is my first ever post! Its very interesting for me to hear the opinions of ''metal fans'' on Metallica as my routes are in hard rock. To me AC\DC are the greatest fkin band ever put together and Angus Young is an absolute legend. But I got into Metallica when hearing my mate's Justice album and I've liked them ever since. I personally think the Black album is an excellent album. Is that more fuel for the opinion that the Black album is hard rock rather than metal? But I love MOP also. The earlier stuff for me is a bit too thrashy although I like the main songs from those albums. Fade to Black is a fkin great tune and Seek and Destroy. I also agree that the 90's stuff isn't great. Theres no doubt the band took a serious u turn but change isn't always a bad thing. Its ironic though that as an AC\DC fan, I constantly hear people slating them for sticking to their routes and always doing the same stuff and here we are arguing over the fact that Metallica changed their routes and whether or not that was the right thing to do. No-one knows what the new album is going to be like so I dont see the point in slating it before its even made. I know I'll be looking forward to it as I agree that it probably wont be anything like the real early days that the die hards want but hopefully its not like Load. I'm also going to down to Dublin to see them on Sunday for the first time and I'm looking forward to the setlist if its anything like Germany.
Just for the record if anyone is interested, 'DC are bringing out a new album this year which is going to be the icing on my fkin cake for 2006!! Plus a world tour!!

Pickleddevileggs should have died along with Cliff Burton (since he liked him so much).

Get a fucking life. In fact, if all you people who hate, resent or just have even a small dislike to this band, then why the hell are you posting about it? If the band's only good records, in your opinion, happened from 1983 to 1986 or 1991, why have you EVER posted about Metallica? The internet wasn't available then, so again, why the hell would you waste your time posting that a band sucks 15 or 20 years later? The people, like me, who still like Metallica and will still buy their albums, we are definitely NOT sheeps. You're just a stupid ass wasting his time. Stop posting here.
