It's Official: Drummer IGOR CAVALERA Quits SEPULTURA

Drummer Igor Cavalera has officially announced his departure from SEPULTURA (as exclusively reported by BLABBERMOUTH.NET on January 13, 2006 and subsequently denied by both the band and Igor). In a statement released today (June 12) to the Brazilian media, Igor attributed the split to "artistic incompatibility" with his SEPULTURA bandmates — guitarist Andreas Kisser, bassist Paulo Xisto Pinto Jr. and vocalist Derrick Green. "I believe my mission in SEPULTURA has come to an end," Igor said in the statement. "I am very proud of everything we have done, but I feel that the group's current formation no longer lives up to my expectations as a musician and a person. Since my last European tour with SEPULTURA, which took place in December 2004, I have sensed that my ideas were not compatible with those of the rest of the band." Igor, who hasn't performed with SEPULTURA since 2005, noticed that his personal ambitions were worlds apart from those of the other members of the group and he felt slightly detached from the creative process of SEPULTURA. "After working in a band for so many years, the relationship between me and the rest of the group wore itself out and I feel that there is no longer a compatibility of thoughts and ideas between us," he said. "I tried to make this clear to the other guys and suggested that we take a break. However, their priority was to continue playing despite my position on this issue." As a drummer and musician, Igor will carry on and says he us looking forward to incorporating new sounds and influences — such as hip hop, hardcore, tribal percussion and electronic music — into his future projects to produce something authentic and real, similar to what SEPULTURA once represented in his life. According to Igor, the decision to leave SEPULTURA was one of the most difficult in his career, since he — as one of the band's co-founders — dedicated most of his life to it. "I would really like to thank all of the fans that supported me and continue supporting our music," he said. "I would also like to thank everybody that worked to make SEPULTURA the band that it had become." Igor announced earlier in the year that he was taking a break from the group's touring activities to spend time with his second wife and their new son (who was born in January). Filling in on drums during the band's European tour with IN FLAMES was Roy Mayorga, who played with Igor's brother Max in SOULFLY for several years in the late '90s and again in 2001-2003. Igor is the second Cavalera to leave SEPULTURA. In 1996, Max Cavalera exited the group after the rest of the band fired Max's wife Gloria as SEPULTURA's manager. SEPULTURA have now officially selected Jean Dolabella (ex- UDORA) as their new touring drummer following Roy Mayorga's decision to join STONE SOUR as a full-time member.

Arise and Chaos AD are better than anything Darkane has ever done. Hell, ROOTS is better than anything Darkane has ever done. Fuck, AGAINST is better than anything Darkane has ever done! Shit, you know that Roorback and Dante XXI are better than anything Darkane has ever done!
In other words: Sepultura > Darkane.
Unless they get Igor and/or Max back, the guys who call themselves Sepultura need to change their name, because it's no longer Sepultura. When Igor quit, Sepultura died.
Hopefully, this will lead to a personal (and hopefully musical)reunion of Max and Igor.

Is that true? If so, I was unaware of that. I do not know the history too much pre Beneath the remaind & post Roots. Plenty of bands carry on the name even is they only have 1 ro 2 founding members. Beneath the Reamins, Arise, and Chaos A.D. are important metal releases. That can't be changed. Darkane could never be better then Sepultura. Darkane, Opeth, Nile, Children of Bodom, etc. can NOT be better then Sepultura. Saying so is blasphemy. Those bands are not even important to Metal. Sepultura is very important. If you think i'm kidding, pick up Beneath the Remians. If you dont think so. Buy Arise or Buy Morbid Visions or Chaos A.D. If those records cant change your mind then you know nothing about metal.

if we'll see igor on the drums for Soulfly in a year or so? In that event, with Soulfly already covering Sepultura songs, all you need are "guest appearances" by Andreas and/or Paulo...hell, just Paulo, Morbid Visions is still my fave Sepultura record, and Andreas wasn't on that one :P
there's gonna be a reunion somehow though, trust me...right now it's probably legally impossible, if Derrick Green is legally tied to the name of the band...wish they would just get over themselves and do a reunion with both singers (like Anthrax should have done)...
Dante isn't a bad album though...better than the last 3 i have to day...

This is unfortunate, because Dante is really a good album--the best post Max record the band has recorded. Here's my conspiracy theory, though (if this has already been theorized, please forgive me, I didn't read all the above posts): now that Igor has officially left, the Cavelara brothers and put real pressure on Adreas and Paulo to strong arm them into a reunion. Derek Green, of course, ends up being the odd man out. I bet this will happen.

Sepultura/Cavalera Reunion talks are underway since Soulfly cannot draw shit in the U.S. and Sepultura is falling apart and cannot sell any CDs.
Of course, this will only happen if Glora Cavalera is allowed to manage the group after the reunion.

they need to disband, right now. Without at least one Calvera in the band, it's not Sepultura. They founded the band and they made it work, somehow. Whatever they did (until Roots, of course) was pure fucking genius. But fuck this new line up, it's not Sepultura with out Igor or Max.
Yea i was hoping for a reunion with Max, but now i'll be happy if they never tour with this line up and never put out a CD, because without the Calvera brothers, it will be an insult to everything Sepultura ever was.

to all those younger Sepultura fans who don't know this, no, Andreas is NOT an original member of the band. he did not join until their second album, Schizophrenia. so technically, this means, with Igor out of the band, the only original member left is Paulo. now I really liked the last few Sepultura albums, but if Andreas has any respect for the Sepultura name, he will end the band NOW. if he and Paulo continue under the same name, it will be a slap in the face of Sepultura's music and their fans.

my question to you guys here is this...do you think max had a little something to do with this? didnt he say a while back that he thought that this line-up of sepultura was a fake? maybe he whispered in igors ear that the writing was on the wall for them. didnt andreas say that this new album was there "make or break" album ? that this was supposed to be there most important album or what? maybe the pressure got to igor with that tall task, confided with max...now this! hes gone now to! if there is a reunion with the cavalera bro. what about paulo, and andreas? will they have to forfiet the "SEPULTURA" NAME? since it is the cavaleras moniker. maybe igor knew that after max left,sepultura left. now he realized the subpar albums...and just said the hell with it. hopefully they will get back together, but under what name?

Max said the Igor-less line up of Sepultura was "fake". Andreas and Paulo don't have to give up the name just because there are no Cavaleras left in the band. Max must have been bought out of his share of the rights when he left. If Andreas and Paulo plan to continue as Sepultura, they probably will (or already have) pay Igor for his rights, too.

Man this sucks. Igor made sepultura. Even more than max IMO. Can't see seps going anywhere now. Dante really didn't see that well, even though it was a great album in almost everyones eyes.
Could well be because of max. But I don't wanna think of soulfly with igor. Don't wanna blame igor either, it just seemed he wasn't quite happy in seps for a while now. Now could be the time for kisser to form a new metal band to kick some arse.

I don't know why people are getting so excited about the idea of Igor joining Max. They were together on "Roots" and that album sucks. If they were to get together, they might play some old stuff live, but any new material they record will most likely sound like current Soulfly stuff.

Seems like a very complicated situation to be in. Igor hung with the remaining Seps after Max left, but what does Andreas, Paulo, and Derrick do now? What will Max do with Soulfly? Will Igor join Max in Soufly? Max changed Soulfly's lineup more than once, who knows???? If the Cavalera bros get back again, I think we'll be hearing some great music again. Igor is a fantastic drummer and Max has that sick voice. Lets hope for the best!

This had to happen soone or later. Oh people, they really fucked everything up after Arise and things got worse when they stopped playing Metal and started the macumba and burundanga shit.
Please don't try to compare this with NAPALM DEATH. That's pretty much different 'cause when Barney joined the band it was pretty clear that they changed their style too. They got much more Death Metal and fortunately they got success and never depended that much on their past. You could say that Scum is a classic, but so is Harmony Corruption. Besides, their latest albums never stank like Sepultura's

That band was so kick ass back in 1994-95. The Chaos AD tour came through town, they did a long set with "Orgasmatron", "Symptom Of The Universe" & tons more, that magical chemistry is un-replaceable. With Derrick they're a good band, but with Max they're legendary.

Well it certainly seems that Igor realized something about the rest of the band. In 1996 when Dana was killed, Max needed to take some time to be with his family and the other guys weren't really supportive. They didn't care, they just wanted to keep on touring. In fact, they fired his wife instead. For whatever reason, Igor didn't mind then, and he stuck around.
Now its Igor's turn, he needs to spend time with his family when his new child is born, and again the rest of the band isn't supportive. They go out on tour anyway, replacing Igor. He kind of got the same treatment as Max, it would seem, only Max was dealing with a death and Igor's dealing with a birth.
Either way, the rest of the band weren't there for the Cavalera family, so Max left. Now again the rest of the band wasn't there for the Cavalera family, and Igor left. Or is it just a coincidence?

You can't have Sepultura without at least one of the Cavalera brothers, the ones that started the band. That's like having Megadeth without Dave Mustaine or Iced Earth without Jon Schaffer. It's impossible and would be ridiculous. I'm a huge Sepultura fan and even supported them through the four albums without Max, but this is the final straw and they should give it up now, or at least change the name of the band.

Sure that Primitive album had a few lame songs on it. But other than that Soulfly fuckin rules. Dark Ages and Prophecy are CLASSICS. 100 TIMES BETTER than anything Sepultura has done since Max left. Even the S/T Soulfly record and Soulfly III are awesome

Big deal the only original member is the bassist, who apparently isn't important in a thrash band as earlier posted. Paulo is still there, and Kisser has been in the band for 19 fucking years it is just has much his as anyone elses. He wasn't some hired hand studio session guitarist. Igor and Max left. They no longer cared to be in the band. Hence they have no valid criticism as to whether it should go on.

Roots ruined Sepultura...actually Korn killed Sepultura when Max thought they sounded good and hired the same crappy ass producer. I think that when a critical member leaves any band, the goal for that band is to write material that will out do anything that was done before. Sepultura never did that. To me, they died when they decided to record Against wih one guitarist. I would have liked to see Sepultura with Andreas on vocals since he did vocals on Policia and hire a second guitarist....

Rather than saying to his face, "Sorry Derrick, your vocals fucking blow", Igor quits. Paulo will quit in a few months, and then Sepultura will quit altogether.
Thus, in a year or two the classic (not original) lineup will reunite for a full-scale tour and album and Derrick doesn't have to have his ego shattered..

I gotta hand it to you in the near completion of the next Soulfly album. It's not easy creating Soulfly albums. If you want easy there's always Zakk Wydle. But that's not the point. Nevermind that fool. This is going to be the most horrifying Soufly album ever. Now for the moment it is time to wander back into the jungle with my g-string hanging out of my ass, some shrooms and my spear for hunting. I swear to God. No I guarantee. Sepultura wasn't transferred to soulfly. Maybe roots was, but really couldn't care about that. Andreas and igor made sepultura what they were, and what they are. As great as max was, I think it was still down to those 2, max clearly wanted to go down the soulfly root, whether or not it was with his buddies.

Yeah, when Max quit they should have changed name, and probably style.
Roots finished quite a few things. It's a patchy album, but with some gems on it. It made pretty much all previous metal sound like megadeth.
Various people have said that it doesn't sound like sepultura, but really it's very much in the same vein, just much much much better done.
That album was clearly so hardcore that they had trouble dealing with what next. They finished the job with Roots. Good on 'em.
Checked up on Sepultura now, and this is not the same band. It is not Sepultura. It isn't. And what's more the fans aren't stupid. They will like it less for being called sepultura, not more. Should have changed the name long ago guys. Long Ago.
Except... if you go see them live, it's a sepultura covers band. Ah now do you get it?
