LARS ULRICH: New METALLICA Album To Arrive Summer/Fall 2007 - June 15, 2006
METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich told Mike Davies of BBC Radio 1 during this past weekend's Download festival in England that the group's new album will not be released until the summer or early fall of 2007. "I think we've realized that the creative process works a little slower for us than it used to," he explained. "And we're OK with that. It's not a bad thing, unless, of course, you're waiting for a record." Asked if he thought it was scary that everybody seemed to know everything about the band since the "Some Kind of Monster" movie was released, Ulrich said, "No, it's not scary. I'm proud we put that shit out there. It's just kind of weird because it's like four years ago. Everybody's kind of still assuming that that's the way it is now, which is like… couldn't be further from the way it is now. We're in the studio, no psychiatrists, no film crews… everybody's getting along, having a great time. [We're] just kind of doing our thing. Back on that record [2003's 'St. Anger'], it was just a very different experience 'cause we had to kind of get it back together. Now everything's cool."

METALLICA guitarist Kirk Hammett recently told the Artisan News Service that the band have "about fifteen songs" written for the follow-up to 2003's "St. Anger", which they hope to release in early 2007. In a short interview conducted at the MAP MusiCares MAP Fund concert on May 12 honoring Hammett's METALLICA bandmate James Hetfield, Kirk admitted the band is really hitting the song writing groove, even busting out two to three new songs per week.

"It's pretty early in the process," Hammett told the Artisan News Service. "We have about fifteen songs or so and we're just going to keep on writing songs until we feel we have the best dozen songs and get those into the studio. That's when I think Rick (Rubin) comes in and does his thing. But it's really really early still, we're just writing the music and that's going along really well. Sometimes we're writing two or three songs per week, which is great. It's just us four in the studio, which is really different now." [Watch a Windows Media video clip of Hammett talking about working on the new METALLICA album at this location.]

Kinda glad they are taking their time since St. Anger sounded so underproduced and under-thought-out (even if that's what they wanted). I know I will get bashed for this but I really didn't mind any of their albums besides St. Anger. The MOP and AJFA era are my favorite, but there is nothing wrong with a band maturing. Keeping my fingers crossed.

How quickly you forget there were some fukin classic tunes on both Justice and even Black, 'Dyers Eve' is still my fave Metallica track to date, 'Harvester' and 'One' were both amazing whilst on black, although a different sound 'Of Wolf And Man' and 'My Friend Of Misery' both shone like fukin diamonds..... Lets face it, even ST Anger wouldnt have been half as bad without that fukin snare sound...... I used to be a huge fan then after the Load periods I had lost hope but then seeing them at Download at the weekend they blew me away afresh, pissing over many of the bands I had actually gone to see.... Im quite interested in hearing where they are going now.....we shall see

Hmmmmm, it really depends, although I doubt it. Theyve got great production on this one which is certainly gonna help but my only worry is they are now going to get stuck in the middle. Black was very very different to the thrash/speed sounds of the previous albums and I think they are going to try and bridge the gap of the two with this release after seeming to bow down to the pressure from fans to go back to the old style which I just dont think they are capable of writing any longer. So I think its going to be a mismatch of some forced trash speed riffs with some more melodic chorus and bridge grooves with mainly melodic n occasional barking vox over the whole..... I do have more hope for this, there hearts seem to be back in it but at the same time their writing styles have changed so much over the years..... hopefully more Black then Load at least and more Puppets than Anger!?!?!? I could be wrong....

When Load came out, "everything was great until Load"
Then it transformed to "everything was great until Justice"
Now it's "everything is great until Master....""

That's true. I myself like Load and ReLoad a lot too, perhaps even more than Black. I think it's wrong to say they are worse than Puppets/Lightning/whatever, they're just different. The same goes for St. Anger.

"Soon it will be "everything was great until No Sleep Till Leather""

Haha! Oh and it was called No Life 'Til Leather by the way.

They have 15 NEW SONGS RIGHT NOW. Record them. Release them. They easily could have a new album out in 6 months, if they weren't so controlling and anal about it. "St Anger" took an enourmous amount of time to make. And look how that turned out! One of the best things they did "Garage Days Re-Revisited" was done in a week. Rock 'n roll isn't meant to be analyzed to death. Record and release it. Simple as that.

"and to think some of you STILL think they'll make a decent album."

Hearing the new song they played live should put a rest to the theory that it will be a decent album. It's going to be St. Anger with leads.

"Rock 'n roll isn't meant to be analyzed to death."

No, but Metallica isn't a rock and roll band, they are a business. They don't release albums for the sake of the music anymore, they release them for the money. When you're a hungry band, you get albums like Lightening and Puppets. When you're a fat, wealthy band, you put out shit like Load and St. Anger.

I must be the only person who thinks St. Anger is a good disc--certainly better than Load and Re-Load. The snare sound, while odd, is actually sort of interesting. He was using that new Tama Black-Chrome snare of his, and they obviously didn't use any muffling on it, which is why it's so "ringy" and harsh. But, in a strange way, it grew on me and I enjoy St. Anger a lot because it's different from anything they did. Anyway, while they're no longer the "reigning kings of metal", or whatever, I still think they're a relevant band and I'm looking forward to a new release. Regarding how long it takes them to make a record, that's just what some bands do. When you're as huge as they are, you can take your sweet time and not worry about studio costs, etc.

I have to disagree with you mrfolger to some extent.... surely if they were just doing it for the cash they would rush release the tracks written as its gonna sell regardless. I do seriously think they are trying to put tracks together that they really enjoy playing and think the fans will like to hear.... its just they havent proved in the last few years to have the best judgement of what that sound should be

To have 15 songs down, and be in a grove, and already know how to belt them out in the studio. These guys don't need that long, so I think someone has misquoted someone.

Because James' voice went, Kirk got lazy, Lars got too straightforward, they waited so long between releases that the expectations were too high to be met, and the albums sucked by any measure. It's not that I'm close minded, I listen to metal, reggae, progressive rock, rock 'n roll ,old-school punk and industrial, hip-hop, and even some electronic music, it's that those albums sucked. Metallica don't have the charisma of, say, MEGADETH, so they need to rely on their skills to get by. Trying new things is great, I'm all for diversity, and there was nothing wrong with the Black Album, and even Load and Reload had their moments, but the music was boring and the songs were worse.

They lost their imagination, substance and my resepct with it.

Not bad at all. Metallica is a band that has the element of suprise on their side. I guess thats why I like them so much. I just hope the element of suprise this time is not another St. Anger record!
