MAX CAVALERA: 'I Wasn't Surprised' To Hear IGOR Left SEPULTURA

Former SEPULTURA/current SOULFLY frontman Max Cavalera has commented on last week's announcement that his brother, drummer Igor Cavalera, had left SEPULTURA to pursue "other projects." The following is an excerpt from an interview Patrizia Mazzuoccolo of the Norwegian metal radio show "Tinitus" conducted with Max last Friday (June 16) backstage at the Norwegian Wood Festival in Oslo, Norway: Tinitus: Were you surprised when you heard that Igor left SEPULTURA? Max: "Not really, because it's an unhappy camp over there. Because it doesn't have the same spirit anymore. It's like trying to create something that's not there anymore. So I was not really surprised. I was surprised that SEPULTURA tried to keep up for this long, because, really, I just saw them going more down and down and down — with every album, less popular, less popular. They should've left the name alone." Tinitus: Obviously, you must have heard this so many times: a SEPULTURA reunion. There's so many reunions nowadays. Would that be ever possible in the future? Max: "It's possible. There's nothing concrete at all. There's a lot of rumors over there. But I think when it happens, it will happen the right way, [for] the right reason, [at] the right time. When it happens, it will be great. But in the meantime, this is great — with SOULFLY, anyway. So, I'm not like one of those musicians that are like, 'I need to do a reunion because my band sucks.' Max should stop writing generic Metal riffs and focus on tribal and ambient music instead. A few distorted guitar riffs here and there but mostly Tribal.

No offense to Max but He's hasn't been in the Sepultura camp for 10 years so how the hell does he know whats going on. Yeah he still has a grudge when they sacked his manager wife....
Its all really sad but there still is a lot of respect between Igor, Andreas, Paulo and Derrick. Max better keep his mouth shut or else he may come off as being the bad guy.

"Bleed" with Fred Durst? 'Nuff said. Sure, 'Against' licked balls, but that album was kind of a rush job, where as 'Nation' and 'Roorback' didn't get the publicity they deserved, and 'Dante' is a masterpiece. Max may be a talented guy, but he's nothing without a decent foil (be it Andreas or Marc Rizzo).
Shit, Andreas has more of a claim to the name than Max. Remember the monumental jump in the quality of the music from 'Morbid Visions' to 'Schitzophrenia'? Not to mention, Andreas had a knack for writing lyrics that DIDN'T sound like they were written with a Portugese-To-English travel dictionary.
Granted, Igor was a HUGE part of the sound, but if his heart ain't in it no more, so be it. I'll be curious to see how they follow up 'Dante'...

We can sit here and diss Max all day, but we all know that once the true Sepultura reunite, it will be one of the greastest days in metal history! I love the old Sepultura and the new shit with Derrick Green, but Max has every reason to give his opinion. Now all he has to do s quit gay ass Soulfly, and it will all begin!

max does a very good job at mixing Popularity and Quality. Sure, less ppl are buying sepultura albums, but that doesnt mean the albums are worse. on the contrary, they're better than ever. sepultura have been the best kept secret in heavy metal for the last ten years (thank you roadrunner). they held on to their integrity with a kung-fu grip though. something max talks a lot about, but actually knows very little of.

he's actually right about Sepulturas declining popularity and the fans gradually losing interest in the current line-up. Warming up for bands like In Flaymz and shit... what the fuck happened!?
That being said, he's DEAD WRONG if he thinks Soulfly doesn't suck. :-D What a joke!
Plus, he now says he was never into Dark Ages, THE best Soulfly album by far (does actually have some decent quality thrash material on it) so I say fuck him.
Anyway, ARISE was Seps last great album. Also their best.

Incidentally, anyone remember the "Third World Chaos" DVD? There's a particular interview section where the interviewer is talking about how third-world artists who achieve success oftentimes become numb to the poverty they've left behind. The camera then pans to Max Cavalera, decked out in Adidas, Reebok and 'Bling-Bling', who responds "Nah, man... that'll never happen to us". Max fucked off to Arizona to live with a green-haired troll, whereas Derrick uprooted his Cleveland life to move to Sao Paulo, with no guarantees of anything, and the dude has stuck to his guns. Shit, I think I'll fire up some Dante right about now...

it's sad that igor left, but i don't give a fuck about max being in sepultura or not. he left the band 10 years ago and andreas, igor, derrick and paulo can be proud of they've done. they just did their own thing and didn't care about people's opinion. that's the way it should be!!!
max even haven't been able to form a REAL band. soulfly is just a bunch of hired musicians. so tell me, where is the spirit!?!?!?

Honestly... Why argue this? Derrick was and is a great replacement for Max. With Max AND Igger gone, I agree that the name "SEPULTURA" should be put away until the inevitable reunion. For me, personally, Dante, is THE BEST album I have heard alltogether. Everyone has their opinions, and I have mine, but can you honestly bash Sepultura, and Soulfly?
It is GOING to happen, and you all know it... You opinianated bastards are wasting your lives typing about the inevitable...
It WILL happen... I just hope that Mr. Green doesn't get thrown on the backburner.

Though I have a lot of respect for Max and all, counting him as one of my favorite frontmen of all time, this just shows that max doesn't know how to pay tribute to his roots. If it wasn't for that 'unhappy camp' called Sepultura, Soulfly wouldn't exist and Max wouldn't be as rich as he is right now. And it's beginning to sound like that he's forgetting that he was one of those who founded that 'unhappy camp'.

O Igor foi egoista, não pensou nos fãs do Sepultura, ainda mais com um puta disco que eles acabaram de lançar. Eu até entendo o break que os caras deveriam dar, deve se foda toca as mesmas músicas por mais de 20 anos, mas os fãs do Sepultura foram deixados na mão. Agora infelizmente os caras serão obrigados a terminarem a tour mundial por um step na banda.
Espero ver em breve o Sepultura com Max, Andreas, Paulo e Igor novamente, quem já viu sabe como é.

Dante XXI is the best album they've made since he left... and better than EVERY album that Soulfly put out.
i mean seriously.. Max is just talkin shit. thats all there is to it here. he's bitter that Sepultura went on for so long without him. he thought they'd fall apart without him... and they didn't... Nation and Against were both certified gold in their country through pre-orders.. none of Soulfly's albums have gone gold.. i would have to add... they have all sucked, however..
Sepultura moved on without Max.. and he is bitter because he never moved on without them... there isn't a single Soulfly album thats better than anything Sepultura ever did.
and how can he say they should've changed the name a long time ago? why? cuz he left? who the fuck is he? seriously that proves it all. he said they should've changed the name a long time ago.. meaning when he left.. but why? he's the one that left.. not them.. and half the original band is still there... and Derrick has been in the band for ten years now.. he's pretty much earned his spot..
Max should stop worrying about what's up with Sepultura and remember how to write good music.

What he wanted and expected was the whole band to collapse when he left, as if they couldn't carry on without the great Max Cavalera. He was attempting to punish them when he left and wanted them to go under.
He's not even BRIGHT enough to hide the fact that he's gloating everytime Sepultura suffers a blow.
He might as well hold up a sign that says, "I think everything I'm involved in rules, and if I'm not a part of it, it sucks".
That's what he thinks, anyway.
Soulfly isn't exactly packing Arenas either, but his Ego is too big for him to realize it. The David Lee Roth of Extreme Metal.
