IRON MAIDEN Talk About New Album
- June 22, 2006
|
|
Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet has published three articles on IRON MAIDEN and their upcoming album, "A Matter of Life and Death" — one where the band members talk about how smooth the recording process was, one that describes the new album and one account of the band's reactions while watching England playing Sweden in the soccer World Cup. Links to the articles and translations of some of the highlights can be found at MaidenFans.com. As previously reported, "A Matter of Life and Death", is scheduled for release on September 5 via Sanctuary Records. The band started writing songs at the end of 2005 after a short break from their hugely successful festival appearances in Europe and the USA. After Christmas, the songs were completed and rehearsed when the band then got together with producer Kevin "Caveman" Shirley at Sarm West Studios in London to start work on recording the backing tracks. As on previous projects all of the tracks were performed live and together in one room. No click tracks or computer tightening or manipulation has happened at any stage of the recording. "A Matter of Life and Death" track listing: 01. Different Worlds (Smith/Harris) 4:17 02. These Colours Don't Run (Smith/Harris/Dickinson) 6:52 03. Brighter Than a Thousand Suns (Smith/Harris/Dickinson) 8:44 04. The Pilgrim (Gers/Harris) 5:07 05. The Longest Day (Smith/Harris/Dickinson) 7:48 06. Out Of the Shadows (Dickinson/Harris) 5:36 07. The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg (Murray/Harris) 7:21 08. For The Greater Good of God (Harris) 9:24 09. Lord Of Light (Smith/Harris/Dickinson) 7:23 10. The Legacy (Gers/Harris) 9:20 The band have just announced tour dates in Japan and the majority of the European dates at the end of 2006 are already sold out.

generating over 100 posts on this topic, im actually bothering to state my dislike of iron maiden, and ignore their no doubt rich history and importance to metal because simply enough, i really dont like metal bands who sing. nor do i like lyrics rooted in fantasy. thats all.

i am not a Maiden fan by any stretch of the imagination-but i seen him in Manchester at a bar a couple of months ago.i spoke and he said hi.he was a bit tipsy.he asked me how big a Maiden fan i was and how i can prove it.i naturally said i may let you watch me take a shit because i am not a fan-but let him know i had nothing against Maiden (blatant lie).he laughed (to my relief) and said good because the majority of his fans are,to his words, "long-haired idiots who live in a time warp" i laughed, naturally, and offered to buy him a beer.he said no,he has his own money,i said fine, good luck with the future (another blatant lie),and we parted ways.

There is no way it could go on forever. I may have to fly to Europe if they don't tour the states.
Techno Allah your lack of facility in the English language is quite alarming. Please pull your head out of your ass and learn how to write before posting again.

no i dont like judas priest either. i adore metal - when i say this, i mean bands who play death or black or combinations of the two, i find bands who 'sing', ie maiden/priest, lacking the brutality and aggression found in bands relate their lyrics to the listener via screams/grunts/growls/shreiks/ etc...ceratinly i can respect the musicianship of maiden, but like them or want to listen to them i dont.

akercock, I like stuff like Carcass and Morbid Angel, but the death grunting bores me after a while. The best mix to me is Nevermore - very heavy but with a vocalist who sings meldies.

What are the chances that "The Longest Day" is another war epic song? ie.. Pashendale , Where Eagles Dare , The Trooper etc...
Not saying thats a bad thing though.Got a feeling this album will be a corker.

Anyone who doesn't like metal bands that have actual singers... good for you. Stay the hell away from Maiden posts.
The Maiden guys are getting up there in age. I'm still amazed and thankful they are putting out albums, and their shows are more super-charged than ever. Not having Maiden around will suck, but having them around with them hating it will damage the music and the performances.
I'm sure the new album will own. But 'Arry, if no.15 is to be the last, make that one the 12 songs-at-four-minutes long, straight up metal curtain call. Til then, I'll enjoy this new prog-groove style.
Cheers!

I actually have only two Maiden records, Live at Donington and Death on the road. And there' s quite a difference between them. Donington is 100% heavy metal, Death is more like 50% heavy metal and the other half is boring folk songs or something like that. I think that in SOME way Iron Maiden has been over since the year 1993. They' re still capable to make good music but it' s just not the same thing anymore, it' s not what the fans would actually like to hear. I mean, as far as I know most of the Maiden fans think that " The number of the beast " is their best record and they certainly don' t sound like that anymore.

I see a lot of Adrian Smith contributions on there, so it might be really good.
I anticipate the lone Harris composition will start out with a mellow bass/guitar intro and soft vocals... pick up during the verses, have a chorus that repeats the same line over and over, then have a middle section that contains solos from all three guitarists climaxing with a triple guitar harmony line, and the song will end the same way it begin.... c'mon 'Arry... prove me wrong.
As for the "traditional Metal' vs "Black, Death, Thrash Metal"...
..well, we are all free to like what we like. Iron maiden sounds nothing like Cannibal Corpse, so it shouldn't be surprising if fans of one don't like the other. Some of us like both. There is room for both.
Me, I'm a traditional Metal guy... but, on occasion I enjoy hearing a blast beat, gutteral vocals and complex riffs... it just bores me after a while.

for sure when im in japan in october, im just a little weary of the 9 minute songs at this point. that is why nothing will ever top the first 4 albums, they started that stuff on powerslave in 84. i own every maiden album ( even the blaze stuff) and its just part of a ritual of mine to buy the new ones when they come out. dance of death in 03 was ok

I thought BNW was a brilliant album, far better than the last 2 albums they did with Bruce ( NPftD and FotD ). DoD had some great songs on it but too much filler...it was still a good release though. If the album after this is the last...fair enough. It`ll likely come out in 2009 or 2010, they`ll have had a 40 year career then and be knocking on a bit. Better to go out at the top. As for the criticisms of them not making music as good as their early stuff - who does? Name me any metal band that have been around for 20-25 years and are still making music as good as they were when they started out. All bands release their classic material in their early days, when they are young and hungry, fresh and original. At least Maiden`s music is still good and they`ve never released a really bad album IMO.

You have to listen to Maiden in eras...The Paul Di'anno Era, The Bruce Era Part 1, The Murray/Smith Era, The Murray/Gers, Era, The Blaze Era, The Bruce Era part 2 with Murray, Gers, and Smith, and all of the Harris only songs. If you do it that way, you will find that there is comething good and each.

it may have bonus tracks or other extras since its in japan. that's the nice thing about being a music lover living here. its just that cds are expensive.
the title of the new maiden album doesnt really grab me, though, like the other ones. Hopefully it will meet the standard.

If you read the interview with Harris about the new album he states a lot of the songs are about how religion has caused so many problems and wars. They haven`t turned into a bunch of god botherers or anything.
