LED ZEPPELIN And METALLICA Are Among Top Rock Bands Of All Time

LED ZEPPELIN and METALLICA are among the Top 10 Rock Bands of All Time, according to AVRev.com. To celebrate their pending tenth anniversary on July 1, 2006, AVRev.com has compiled its list of the Top 100 Rock Bands of All Time. Unlike past lists that are based on mere opinion, the AVRev.com "Top Rock Bands" list uses the same type of analytical tools employed by sports franchises and applies them to rock bands to objectively determine which bands are the best. Among the categories considered were: U.S. Sales (100 points), Songs/Songwriting (100), Technical Ability (100), Live Performance (50), Consistency vs. Longevity (50) and Random (50). Random is a category that allows a judge to vote on how likely he or she is to want to hear a band's songs on their iPod playlist. Topping the list with a total of 525 points was LED ZEPPELIN. All of the judges gave LED ZEPPELIN high marks not only for their songs/songwriting ability, but also their consistency as a band through the years. The Top Ten is as follows: 01. LED ZEPPELIN - 525 points 02. THE BEATLES - 514 points 03. PINK FLOYD - 506 points 04. THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE - 503 points 05. VAN HALEN - 496 points 06. QUEEN - 493 points 07. THE EAGLES - 479 points 08. METALLICA - 468 points 09. U2 - 455 points 10. BOB MARLEY AND THE WAILERS - 454 points The 100 band nominees range from the usual suspects that make up classic rock playlists, but also include more out-of-the-box sleeper bands from the 1950s through today's most popular bands. The list doesn't include solo artists such as MICHAEL JACKSON or ELVIS PRESLEY. Voting on the list was done by an esteemed panel of judges including: former DIRE STRAITS guitarist Jack Sonni, University of Southern California Thornton School of Music professor Ken Lopez, Xhifi desktop speaker company president Howard Schilling, as well as AVRev.com founder and publisher Jerry Del Colliano Jr. and AVRev.com's music editor Charles Andrews. A downloadable form allows you to create your own list and a link on the page allows you to email AVRev.com the names of bands you would have liked to have seen in the nominee list. Results for the entire 100-band list of nominees can be found at this location.

As an American, this is embarrassing.
Any moron can put together a rating system to make sure their favorite bands would top any list. It's all done in order so they can charge a huge consulting fee to record companies so they can report to stock holders about how well their bands are doing.
Notice only about 3 of those bands actually toured in the last decade as well.
Well, I give RUSH 1000 points for integrity plus Technical Ability (100), Live Performance (50), Consistency vs. Longevity (50) and Random (50). So that makes them the TOP BAND on my list. nyah nyah nyah.
Like any list, it's complete shit unless you really care about someone elses list other than your own. If that's the case than you should go work for one of the bozos and prepare to pucker up.

Hey, I'm as American as you can get, but even I will say that's fucking unfair to only award points based on U.S. sales, and then say the winners are among "the best bands of all time." There should be an asterisk after that, and after the asterisk, a little note that says "(in the U.S.)."

The first band to immediately jump out at me as way too high on the list is STP at number 13!
How on earth do they score 85/100 for technical ability? Meanwhile Kansas scores 53/100? What exactly are they talking about? Ability to snort cocaine? Or Journey a 76? Regardless of what style music you like, how can you say that Scott is a better singer than S. Perry or the STP guitar player is better technically than Neal Schon, or the bass player is better than Ross Valory? Is there anyone out there that will seriously make this argument?

Plus, Bob Marley made the top 10 when his music doesn't even fit the genre. Last time I checked, reggae wasn't rock... it was reggae.
The Sabbath thing is the biggest joke in the world. The criteria lists "innovation" as: "(100 points max) The ability to define a genre or a sound or a technique, or to strongly influence bands that came after you, make up the parameters for the fully-weighted innovation category." In that category, Sabbath got... that's right... 62. That's a lower score than Primus (66) and Blondie (65), by the way. And both of those artists are also above Sabbath on the list. I guess creating a genre doesn't count as innovation...

Black Sabbath at #70, Lynyrd Skynyrd at #71, Iron Maiden at #93, Judas Priest at #95.
But, Then they have bands like No Doubt at #56, Audioslave at #66, The Bee Gees at #19, Dire Straits at #38, Parliament Funkadelic at #40, The Dixie Chicks at #43, Jethro tull at #47, Duran Duran at #62, Living Colour at #63, The Carpentars at #65, Blondie at #69.
This WHOLE list is laughable.
One band I hate but I think fits all the criteria to be alot higher on the list is Radiohead. Who are listed at a whopping #90. Even The Cure at #97 and Coldplay at #98 should be alot higher on the list and certainly ahead of Jethro Tull and the Fuckin' Carpentars.

Oh yeah, one more thing-- Deep Purple only getting a 38 under U.S. Sales proves that they were just flat-out lying when they made that category. Everybody knows that DP were huge in the U.S. in the 60's and 70's. In 1973, they were the nation's top-selling act, outselling even Zeppelin. Maybe their compiled sales don't amount to as much as some of these other bands, but when Deep Purple WAS a huge band, they had better U.S. sales than nearly any band on this list.

at the full list and two things immediately stand out. I love audioslave, but there is no way they are in the top 100. They have only 2 albums out. Also, of course Black Eyed Peas. Not even rock and have only been popular for a couple of years. You can't apply a numerical system to this thing. No way Slayer is at the bottom of the list JUST above Black eyed peas. What a shit list.

Van Halen and Eagles but no Who? No Cream? If not for Cream, there'd probably be no metal, and no jam band scene. And I'm sorry, Van Halen never came anywhere near the excellence of Who's Next. Hendrix got the guitar smashing thing from Pete Townshend, for Chrissakes.

Cream and The Who should be waaaayy ahead of a band like STP.
STP was nothing more than an imitation grunge band.
They ripped off a little bit from Alice in Chains a little bit from Nirvana and a little bit from Pearl Jam.
Who by the way are well below #13.
Pearl Jam at #36
Nirvana at #50
Alice in Chains at #59
Since, STP ripped off those three bands and STP's sales figures were well below those three bands and STP are not considered any type of legendary band. But, Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Alice in Chains are.
How The Hell, can Stone Temple Pilots be rated so much higher than Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains????
When You think of popular rock music in the 1990's.

Wheres Guns N ROses!?!?!?!??!?!, they should've definately been here. To me this band is the greatest i understand if they arent number one. Selling 15 million records and still having credibility means something unlike Def Leppard with Hysteria. None of these bands ever wrote a great song like November Rain or other Epic Ballads and still delivered with kick ass songs like Rocket Queen, Welcome to the jungle or You Could Be Mine.

I wouldn't mind seeing Billy Joel on a list like that, but they specifically said that solo artists would not be considered (though I hardly think they should have counted Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix as entire bands simply because their backing bands happened to be named...)

STP gets some sort of respect! am suprised to see them so high on the list though. i would have thought that nirvana would have been higher on the list due to their history / legacy.
stp totally deserves to be higher than pearl jam. they are technically better musicians, have better songs and consistently put out great records where as pearl jam lost the plot after no code.
if you listen closely to anything stp did after core, you will see how it leaves the other bands of their time in their dust. dean deleo is the most underrated guitarist of all time (after mick mars), robert deleo's bass lines are so technically proficient. eric kretz was an ordinary drummer, solid but nothing special. i have seen him go nuts on a few live videos though. scott weiland was / is leaps and bounds ahead of eddie vedder, kurt cobain and even chris cornell vocally. he had range and depth where as the other three are kind of one dimensional.
the rest of the list is a bit shit. not a stones fan but you think they would be higher. aerosmith, gnr, tool and alice in chains should all be higher. as should sabbath. silverchair should also be on the list. if any of you had heard diorama or even their live dvd you would agree. there is not much they can't do.
these lists are always a good laugh though. nobody is ever happy.

youre right, hendrix and joplin shouldnt have been on that list. i consider them to be solo artists. then again its kinda tough cause i consider tom petty and the heartbreakers a band. it gets confusing. maybe they should do a list of solo acts as well.

STP fuckin' rock! they deserve so much credit. they were able to escape those "grunge" and "pearl jam copycats" labels that were put on them and put out some amazing albums like tin music and no.4. they really matured on every album they put out.

Scott Weiland has more vocal range than Eddie?... or Chris Cornell? Are you f'n serious?... than Chris Cornell? You've heard him sing before, right?. You're obviously biased to stp because you know all the band members names but you don't know names from any other bands, except the vocalists. Don't get me wrong, stp was a good band but even weiland admitted they were a "grunge" ripoff. How the hell can you say stp wrote better songs than soundgarden or pearl jam... and no mention of alice in chains? Layne Staley had more range than Weiland too. And yea Deleo is underrated, but he isn't leaps and bounds better than stone gossard or jerry cantrell, or kim thayil. Pearl Jam's Ten, Vs., Vitalogy, Yield, Binaural and even their new one are all very good (I'll give you No Code as being a dissapointment).... STP (Core, Purple, Tiny Music....). No. 4 is nothing special... and shangra la de da? please. You're biased, period. This list is obviously a joke, which has been stated a hundred times already. And Metallica wrote 4 of the most influential metal albums of all time (the Black Album could be thrown in too I guess, making it 5 albums). People who hate on Metallica focus on Load and Reload and St. Anger and completely ignore their other masterpieces; plus they're still pissed about the Napster thing.

I think Metallica deserves alot more respect than that, but I am happy to see that the best metal band in the world made the list! As for U2 I have alot of respect for Bono I think hes making a difference in this world, why any one would call him a greedy bastard is beond me. You guys forget that alot of these bands have been around for a long long time, and that they made the foundation for the bands that we see today. Without Black Sabbath would there even be metal? And if metal did exist who would have started it? I know Sabbath didn't make the list thats just an example.

First off let me say as an American how freakin embarrased I feel that the judges awarded 100 pts based on the bands U.S. sales - this is just another example of ignorant Americans feeling there's no other countries that matter beside this one or people here think that their opinion is what everyone around the world looks at. It's this kind of miopic view that's probably why Americans around the world are so hated and I wish that this poll was just called '100 top rock bands slanted toward american bias'
Anyways the top 10 bands are ok but some waaay overrated bands made it in there.
1) Metallica (runs behind the chair and ducks) - Their 3-album span of RtL, MoP & AJFA stand up with ANY rock bands top-3 albums imo... ya their last couple albums have been weak but I'm putting them #1 because of the strength of their albums all the way up to Load.
2) Led Zeppelin - Their music still kicks ass 35 years later...
3) Pink Floyd - I'm glad they made #3 on the american-biased list.
4) The Beatles - They've got sooo many great songs, and since this isn't a 'great hard rock' or 'great metal' list they've gotta get their props...
5) Black Sabbath - Putting them as the 70th best band is soooo ridiculous, its almost like saying the Jimi Hendrix Experience deserves to be the 4th best band ever hahaha.... oh wait they were picked 4th best.... =P
6) The Rolling Stones - Some of their stuff isn't my cup of tea but they should get 10x points on the longevity scale!
7) Queen - They've got some brilliant songs and much like the other bands on this list (except maybe Zep who didnt have a bad album imo) are here on the strength of their early stuff (beatles for their later works).
8) Rush - Hugely overlooked and under-rated, they are the opposite of U2.
9) Deep Purple - A band that wasnt as popular in the States as they were in Europe but TRUE rock fans here love, and they actually were'nt that unpopular here as my older sisters former record collection can attest to - she had more deep purple albums than any other band.
10) Yes - OK I had to have at least one progressive rock band make the top 10...
Next 10: Iron Maiden, Cream, The Clash, Sex Pistols, Slayer, Guns N Roses, King Crimson, Genesis, The Doors, The Beach Boys (Hey gimme a break I was born in Redondo Beach!)

First off let me say as an American how freakin embarrased I feel that the judges awarded 100 pts based on the bands U.S. sales - this is just another example of ignorant Americans feeling there's no other countries that matter beside this one or people here think that their opinion is what everyone around the world looks at. It's this kind of miopic view that's probably why Americans around the world are so hated and I wish that this poll was just called '100 top rock bands slanted toward american bias'

In terms of popularity and influence, theres Led Zeppelin and the Beatles, then everyone else. Led Zeppelin truly deserves the #1 spot. Incredibly powerful and talented. They still don't get all the credit they deserve (particularly in those ludicrously biased RS ragazine polls). No band commands the enduring loyalty and dedicated respect of so many millions of knowledgeable music fans of all generations, as does the mighty Led Zeppelin.
