Boy Dies After Riding Disney's 'Rock 'N' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith'
- June 29, 2006
|
|
Reuters is reporting that a 12-year-old boy died on Thursday (June 29) after riding Rock 'n' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith ( video), one of the fastest roller coaster rides at Walt Disney World near Orlando, Florida, Walt Disney Co. and local police said. The boy from Fort Campbell, Tennessee, collapsed at 11:11 a.m. EDT (1511 GMT) during a ride on the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster at the Disney-MGM Studios theme parks. He was with his 7-year-old brother, mother and father, said Sgt. Carlos Torres of the Orange County Sheriff's Department. The Rock 'n' Roller Coaster, which opened in 1999, is an enclosed, 82-second ride with a roll-over corkscrew feature accompanied by a blasting AEROSMITH soundtrack. It is presented as a high-speed journey down a mythical Los Angeles freeway. Disney's Web site says coaster riders will "zoom from 0-60 mph with the force of a supersonic F-14, take in high-speed loops and turns synchronized ... and zip through Tinseltown in the biggest, loudest limo you've ever seen."

The band will end up getting blamed, them and Ozzy.
Dee Snider will have to defend them in court.
Why the hell is a roller coaster at Disney World named after Aerosmith anyway?

Dying on a roller coaster is a bad way to die. I hope he last heard a GOOD Aerosmith song, at least.

I've been to disney world and I've ridden both Mission : Space and the Aerosmith rollercoaster. The person who took their 4 yo on Mission : Space is an idiot. I don't get why the Aerosmith coaster could kill someone, it's not THAT intense, but even that has big warnings up about taking kids on it. I feel sorry for the parents, BUT, I have kids, and the real problem is that Disney will get the blame when they do all they can to tell people how intense their rides are. The other option is for the rides to plain suck. I'm glad I got to go on both rides, I'm sure I won't get the chance again. I sure as hell wouldn't take my kids on any thrill rides without going on them first to make sure that I thought they could handle it, and I'm double sure I wouldn't take a child on Mission : Space ( although I may take them on the roller coaster.
The kid has had to have had some sort of problem that caused a blood clot or something. Nothing can hit you in that thing, you're strapped in and can't stand up or anything. It does happen in the dark with flashing lights, maybe he had a fit ?

The problem is that nobody cares enough about themselves or their children to get tests done for every little thing that may go wrong. There are a handful of things that can happen in this case, but, usually, anyone that dies AFTER a ride like this almost always dies because of some pre-existing condition that was exacerbated by the high speeds and force of the ride. Someone with a weak heart could probably have a heart attack or failure.
There's really no avoiding something like that. And what sucks is that the kid's parents are probably going to try to blame Disney World. These things just happen,
PS - wtf @ aerosmith roller coaster.

The parents will wind up suing Disney for some 7 figure amount of cash. I took my son to Disney 3 years ago. The last thing that ever would have crossed my mind was death. That place is like Utopia for kids. Made me feel kinda like a kid myself.

also after visiting Disney twice (america) now i think the Health and Safety of the visitors is very up to standard and very good. lots of the rides where closed most of the time for maintenance checks, and they were doing them everyday, which good.
The family could sue but i think it would eventually just get dropped.

Shouldn't there be a height limit or something?
Disneyland Paris had height limits. (Wasn't allowed on half the rides) Or maybe this was a tall 12 year old?

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The 12-year-old boy who died after riding a Walt Disney World roller coaster had a congenital heart defect, a medical examiner ruled Friday. ADVERTISEMENT
The autopsy of Michael Russell was done one day after he passed out while riding Disney-MGM's Rock 'n' Roller Coaster. His father, an Iraq war veteran, performed CPR on the boy, but Michael was pronounced dead at a hospital.
"No evidence of injury was found but congenital heart abnormalities were detected, which will be further evaluated," the Orange County medical examiner's office said in a statement.

There you have it. Unavoidable. And that's exactly why the parents would be assholes to file a lawsuit. It's too bad that nobody thinks to get tested for something like that, but, if his parents know what's good for themselves, they'd make sure that they don't have the same problems.
