Legendary New York City Club CBGB To Close On September 30
- July 5, 2006
After over 30 years, the legendary rock club CBGB will be closing for good on September 30, 2006.
CBs, as it is universally and fondly known, opened its doors in 1973, making it New York City's oldest continuously operating rock venue. Owner Hilly Kristal originally intended the club to showcase country, bluegrass and blues (hence the acronym), but the lack of places for unsigned bands to perform in New York at the time made CBs a magnet for the punk and art-rock scenes that were emerging downtown. Throughout the '70s, such seminal artists as THE RAMONES, TALKING HEADS, BLONDIE, THE PATTI SMITH GROUP, TELEVISION and SUICIDE performed at CBs regularly, and the club served as an incubator for what would become the most influential music of the era.
When punk metamorphosed into hardcore in the '80s, CBs remained on the city's cutting edge, offering a home for THE GORILLA BISCUITS, AGNOSTIC FRONT, CRO-MAGS, SICK OF IT ALL, H20, MURPHY'S LAW, LEEWAY and the other pillars of the NYHC movement.
As the New York nightlife industry grew bigger and more cutthroat in the '90s, CBs remained an endearingly stubborn throwback, sticking firm to the open-door booking policy that first welcomed its inaugural class of rebels — whoever you are, whatever you do, your band can play at CBGB.
In a downtown scene increasingly governed by fashion and status, CBs has zealously adhered to the formula that made it meaningful, by refusing to apply stylistic filters to its bookings, welcoming all comers to sink or swim on their own merits.
A much-publicized altercation with their landlord in mid-2005 led to an a star-studded benefit concert in Washington Square Park, and even Mayor Bloomberg vocally led his support to the little club that had developed, over the decades, into a globally-recognized cultural institution.
However, despite the universal outpouring of love, and numerous attempts to resolve the matter legally, Kristal has been unable to arrive at terms with the building's owner, and a three-decade musical legacy will come to an end in just a few short months. Fittingly, steadfastly independent New York concert promoters Rocks Off have signed on to book CBGBs closing festival, set to take place throughout August and September. They are in touch with many of the artists who made CBs famous, and are hard at work putting together a final schedule that will do justice to the club's enduring impact in the many varieties of rock and roll it has helped to cultivate throughout the years.

with all the rich rockstars/legends that started their careers there, is there nobody stepping forward to save this place? i find it sad that nobody seems to care.
of course, like pretty much everything/everyone mentioned on this website, most of you will claim that cbgb "sucks this" and "sucks that."
home to agnostic front, and the whole NYHC scene....RIP

its a shame that CB's is gonna be closing. Having seen a few shows there, both by "big" bands and local acts, it is something to be seen. Yes, the place is a shithole. It smells, the beer is warm and overpriced, and you have to fight your way past the stage to get to the "restroom" (term used loosely, more like a room to defecate in). With that all being said, it is a really special place. There's something about walking up to it, going inside, checking out the stage, the walls, all the graffiti, stickers, etc, all over the place, and just taking in the history of the place. It truly is a place of rock 'n roll history. Not just a punk thing either. Metal definately has left its mark on the place. The guy's quote in the article is dead on too. CB's is a place where anybody, and I mean anybody, can have a shot to get up on stage and show the world what they can do. I always found that really cool, and something you don't really see that much anymore.
RIP CBGB's.

A whole line of famous musicians have stepped up to the plate in support of the club. The Van Zandt's for one - who contributed tens of thousands of dollars to pay the back taxes owed by the club and then some. But still, even with all the back taxes and rent paid off and setup for years into the future, the building's owner, who is a fuckin stubborn prick and an asshole - is content to let this history die in his own hands. Fuck You dude. You feel better now?

I know that CB's is a legendary place but the owner was so far behind on taxes and rent, it was ridiculous. I read somewhere that it was in the neighborhood of 3 years. Maybe if he was a little better with his money management he would not be the place he is now. It is a shame because the booking policy is something that many places should adopt.

The combined smell of skunk beer, vomit, pussy, sweat, urine, smoke, and BO. Miss sloshing around in piss in the bathroom? Haven't had your head cracked by a bouncer in a while? Ever seen dedicated puke barrels? (even if they don't get used as much as the floor) And when was the last time you saw a drunk topless chick doing lines off the bar anyway? It's a sad sad thing about CB's but as far as I see it Harpo's in Detroit always had em' beat. Around forever, owned by a biker gang, all METAL. Plus, the hallmark of a real shithole: $1 pitcher nights.

Oh, BELIEVE ME THAT SUCKS. I live in Manhattan, L'Amour was a 90 minute subway ride, but SO worth it.

the truth is the place hasn't really been viable for at least 15 years or maybe more.
its one of those places where any band that calls up and can play and gets paid a dollar for everyone who brings a ticket or flyer with the bands name on it.
about once a month they would have something that was relevant about 17 years ago...but its really been crap for some time.
i agree it has a place in rock history ....so move the marquee to rock hall in cleveland and lets move on . shall we?

The one constant is change.

that should be put out of it's misery. For all the great bands and shows that have taken place there over the years it's now just a lame venue with asshole workers, lame shows (besides the recent benefit ones) and overpriced drinks. $4 for a PBR?!... come on...now they sell sparkly CBGB shirts in malls for halfwits to wear and think they are rock and roll and know what it was all about...it's time to let go an move on people.

It's a shithole. Period. I had heard how cool CB's was and was pumped to play there but once I got there the dream died. CB's blows. Just because it started something great doesn't mean that it will always be great. Just look at Eddie Van Halen. He should call it quits too.
