CANNIBAL CORPSE's Australian Tour Sparks Outrage, Calls For Group To Be Banned

The West Australian newspaper reported in its July 8 edition that CANNIBAL CORPSE's October concert in Perth, Australia has sparked calls for the band to be banned over its alleged glorification of "child rape, suicide, murder and necrophilia" in its lyrics. Community groups have joined shadow police minister Rob Johnson in calling for CANNIBAL CORPSE to be stopped from appearing at Club Capitol on October 10. In the wake of the murders of Banjup schoolgirl Sofia Rodriguez-Urrutia-Shu and Collie teenager Eliza Jane Davis, the group's dark message was unacceptable, they said. CANNIBAL CORPSE, who played in Perth in 1995, has songs such as "Dismembered and Molested", and "Necropedophile", which details "the pleasure gained from killing, then raping, children." In the past 16 years, the group has released 14 albums, many of which are available at music stores throughout Perth. Mr. Johnson said he was disgusted by the band's highly explicit songs. "They should be banned from appearing here," he said. "There is enough violence and youth suicide in WA [West Australia] already without any encouragement from awful groups like this. I feel sick at the thought of those lyrics being sung to the youth of WA." Australian Family Association vice-president Gillian Gonzalez said CANNIBAL CORPSE have the most offensive lyrics she had ever seen. "I could hardly read them, they made me want to be sick," she said. "They are absolutely vile and should not be allowed into the country." Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone said the group members had not yet lodged visa applications and that, when they did, they would be subject to requirements regarding character. Young Media Australia president Jane Roberts said she believed the band's message would be harmnful to Perth's youth. "Songs about having sex with dead children — how could anyone think that is appropriate?" she said. Police Commisioner Karl O' Callaghan condemned the band's lyrics but would not buy into the debate over their concert. "There is no doubt that the lyrics are disturbing, but whether the band should play (in Perth) or not is not a matter for police," he said. Attorney-Gerneral Jim McGinty did not comment on whether the group should be banned from playing and said outfits like CANNIBAL CORPSE thrived off negative publicity. I'm glad our Attorney-General has some sense. CC thrive on negative publicity, these folks are playing right into their hands. And look at the venues they will play. So 300 odd kids get to hear some lyrics they already own on CD. Like that's going to cause society to come to an end. I hate CC, but I say anyone trying to stop them from playing a show is an idiot.

if they do ban them. this will ruin music in perth. we have deicide in feb. but they also tried this before with deicide and cannibal corpse before. we hardly get bands to perth and now there is a flood of them coming. if they start banning bands this will ruin years of hard work getting bands back to perth.

a) no one who goes to their concerts either doesn't own some of their records or knows what they sing about...
b) the murder mentioned in the article occured before any show was played by them, not after making the band merely a scapegoat once again
c) we have bands in aus who are more offensive than cc - intense hammer rage, for one....
d) the lyrics wont be sung, fuckhead, they will be grunted and screamed.

I've always thought the same thing too, although there have been some prohibitions before. But where I live (Adelaide) there's not much for prohibition. That's what I love about living here.
This call to ban Cannibal Corpse is complete bullshit and I feel sorry for the Perth metallers who will have been waiting ages to see the band. I'm glad they're still coming to Adelaide (as far as I know they are). If a person takes CC's lyrics seriously enough, then they shouldn't even be reading the lyrics. The problem is in that person's head and CC should not be blamed.
Another thing these cretins don't know is that CC writes these lyrics for fun and are deeply interested in the macabre theme. They do not take their lyrics seriously and they would shake their heads in disdain at anyone who does.

Oh my God, my email address totally rules out me having a valid opinion on any Death Metal. Lets disregard the fact I probably own more and have seen more Death Metal bands than you have and focus on that shall we?
Fact is, Cannibal Corpse are a Fisher Price Death Metal band. You even have to like Six Feet Under beter than Cannibal Corpse because at least there amusing, albeit in a pretty unintentional way.

Actually, the fans are at fault here for their poor interpretations of the music. And often, parents are at fault for the behaviour of these kids. Ironically, it wasn't until I got into Death Metal (Cannibal Corpse being my first band) that I held some sadistic/violent desires myself.

And I honestly hope that Cannibal Corpse fucking come here damnit! I'll be devastated if they don't. But knowing all of this, people here are going to want to see them even more. There was a segment on triple j about it this afternoon and to hear these people talk, it sounded to fucking stupid. The lyrics are just words. Take this for instance:
