IRON MAIDEN Artist Hopes To Honor DEREK RIGGS With New Album Cover
- July 11, 2006
|
|
Acclaimed artist Timothy Bradstreet, who was responsible for the artwork for the new IRON MAIDEN album, "A Matter of Life and Death", has posted the following message on his official blog: "If you'd have told me back in 1985 that I'd one day be doing an album cover for IRON MAIDEN, I'd have told you to 'Get the **** out of my face.' You see, not only am I one of the MAIDEN faithful from WAY back, I'm a card-carrying member of Ed Hunter F'n fanclub. "A few months back I recieved one of those emails I had to read two or three times. IRON MAIDEN came calling to see if I wanted to take a crack at their forthcoming album cover. Are you kidding? I spent the better part of my four high school years drawing Eddie in every available corner of my school notebooks to the everlasting chagrin of my instructors. It's like music to my ears to recollect the words of my teachers at the time. I think it went something like this: 'Do you honestly think these silly drawings will ever get you a job in the real world? Why don't you just concentrate on your schoolwork and stop wasting your time?' "Hmmm, well I think most of them realized they could take a big kiss-off some time ago when I made a career of creating those 'silly drawings' on a monthly basis for The Punisher and John Constantine: Hellblazer. Now it really comes full circle as one of my wildest dreams has found itself fully realized. "Coming in early September is MAIDEN's 13th studio album, 'A Matter of Life and Death' with artwork by that silly kid from 10th grade. It's truly a wonderful thing for me to be a part of. I want to send a special shout out to Mr. Derek Riggs whose paintings for MAIDEN inspired legions of fans over the last 26 years. Hard to believe it's been that long. Derek will always be the man. I hope I do him honor with my effort." "A Matter of Life and Death" is scheduled for release in early September via EMI. The album's first single, "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg", will precede the album on August 14. "A Matter of Life and Death" was recorded at Sarm West Studios in London with producer Kevin Shirley, who also worked on the last two MAIDEN albums, 2000's "Brave New World" and 2003's "Dance of Death". The complete track listing for both the single and the album is as follows: Limited-Edition Two-Track CD: 01. The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg 02. Hallowed be thy Name (Radio 1 "Legends" Session) Limited-Edition 7" Picture Disc (To Include "Crossed Gun Logo" Sticker): 01. The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg 02. Run to the Hills (Radio 1 "Legends" Session) 03. The Trooper (Radio 1 "Legends" Session) "A Matter of Life and Death" track listing: 01. Different Worlds (Smith/Harris) (4:17) 02. These Colours Don't Run (Smith/Harris/Dickinson) (6:52) 03. Brighter Than a Thousand Suns (Smith/Harris/Dickinson) (8:44) 04. The Pilgrim (Gers/Harris) (5:07) 05. The Longest Day (Smith/Harris/Dickinson) (7:48) 06. Out Of the Shadows (Dickinson/Harris) (5:36) 07. The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg (Murray/Harris) (7:21) 08. For The Greater Good of God (Harris) (9:24) 09. Lord Of Light (Smith/Harris/Dickinson) (7:23) 10. The Legacy (Gers/Harris) (9:20)

What's the deal with Derek Riggs? Why did he he bail? The new album cover is definitely a step up from the clusterfuck that was "Dance Of Death", but nonetheless, Derek is sorely missed.

well..the artwork it pretty fuckin cool but i agree with hairball, steve's songwriting can be too damn cheesy sometimes. too many songs about ancient history,WW2, to much like spinal tap. as much as i love bruce...the band needs to get back that raw punk vibe they had in the paul di'anno days.

Why fix what's not broken! Can't we all just appreciate the fact that Iron Maiden are still here and still making quality music. In fact, better music than many many other artists are creating today. Who really cares about a fkin' CD cover. Of course, Iron Maiden CD covers have been incredible but to those who complain just get over it. I don't give a rats ass if Eddie's wearing lipstick, a dress, and 6 inch heels on the cover! I just want great Maiden music. I tell you what...when Iron Maiden release a CD that sounds like The Backstreet Boys...then start to complain, until then get over it!

I have never understood this eddie thing. Artwork ? Certainly nothing to do with any kind of art. Comic books are not art, yet the cover pictures of many comics are much better than the album covers of Iron Maiden. It' s the silliest possible idea to put the same children cartoon monster on every album cover. Iron Maiden was aimed to the teenage audience but their album covers always made it look like the records would have been fairy tales for the children. Eddie has always reminded me of a liitle plastic monster you could find inside a cereal package, put there that the children would ask their mothers to buy those certain cereals. I just don' t understand it. Originally, the heavy metal music was not intended to be childish, but certainly eddie is something that appeals only to the children. The latest Iron Maiden album cover looks again like a cover of a comic book. Is that a good thing ? If Iron Maiden' s album covers are art, then every drawing in every comic book must be art too. Art ? That' s just laughable. Fuck off already with your little green monsters and other toys. Grow up for fuck' s sake. This is unbelievable.

Oh, please. Sure comic books are art. What is art, then to you?
The stuff hanging in the Louvre? That wierd sculpture outside the government building? Dead rabbits wearing makeup hanging off a clothesline?
Have you no idea of the spirit of metal, or in Iron Maiden's work, music or cover wise? Sounds like you have no business being on this site. We all "get" Iron Maiden and the Eddie thing. We all "get" metal. You do not. So kindly fuck off and haunt some Top 40 thread.

I certainly know what heavy metal music is supposed to be. It' s not for children, like Iron Maiden is. To call Iron Maiden' s album covers art is a joke. 100 pictures of a grinning green goblin are not art, they' re a cartoon series.
However, there IS actual heavy metal art. For example, Motörhead' s logo, the original version of it, is good enough to be art. That picture would be interesting even without the Motörhead connection.
And one more thing : Don' t ever say " we " when you mean " I. " You can say what you think but you can' t say what all the other people think.

... some person. I believe that some one has to be an artist to produce images that we see on albumn covers. I guess wango tango doesn't think that musicians are artists either, just people who can put sounds together. So, for wango here is the definition of art. art1 >noun 1 the expression of creative skill through a visual medium such as painting or sculpture. 2 the product of such a process; paintings, drawings, and sculpture collectively. 3 (the arts) the various branches of creative activity, such as painting, music, and drama. 4 (arts) subjects of study primarily concerned with human culture (as contrasted with scientific or technical subjects). 5 a skill: the art of conversation. -ORIGIN Latin ars. Oh and nice of wango to name himself after the song of a pediphile.

Norman Rockwell ? Yes, sure I can tell you and all your heavy metal friends what I think about him. Personally I don' t like his style, actually I could say I dislike it quite intensely. However, I can see that it takes SOME talent to do what he has done. That' s why I could call his work art. You see, anyone can draw an eddie, you certainly don' t have to be talented in any way to do that. Art means personal vision, unique way to do something. Art can' t be copied. Comic books can be well illustrated which means the guys drawing them are skilled but that doesn' t make comic books art. If you say Iron Maiden album covers are art, then you' re saying ANYTHING can be art. And that of course only means that art doesn' t actually mean anything to you.

You're a Nudge fan and I suppose where you come from it is ok to have sex with someone young. No wonder Courtney Love is messed up. As for an earlier comment that about Maiden's artwork being fairy tale pictures for children. I never thought as Maiden or anyone elses' album covers as having anything to do with fairy tales. And I listened to it growing up in the eighties. Get back to the listening to you wuss music with your safe, mature albumn covers that have pics on them taken by photographers who obviously according to you have no artistic skill.
