TONY MARTIN: 'It's Almost As If I've Been Written Out Of The BLACK SABBATH History Books'
- July 13, 2006
|
|
Adam Harrold of RockSomething.com recently conducted an interview with former BLACK SABBATH frontman Tony Martin. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow: On what "went wrong" with BLACK SABBATH: "Me and Geoff Nicholls [ Martin's keyboardist and ex- SABBATH man] get asked about SABBATH a lot and we have kind of worked out this theory as to what happened. Basically, people forget that at the time I joined SABBATH that nobody wanted to work for them. They were badly in debt for a start, so they ended up going for an unknown person, which was me. I was 27 at the time and we did 'Eternal Idol' and then 'Headless Cross', which starting seeing us get on top of it, and then 'Tyr' as well. And at this time we were starting to do well in Europe and Japan — places that when Ozzy was in the band they hadn't gone to before, because they solely concentrated on the U.K. and the USA. But me and Geoff think that they must have sensed the seeds of something good and that the ground work had been laid, so they decided to get [ Ronnie James] Dio back. Only thing was, it didn't work — people didn't want it. So I came back again, but then there was 'Forbidden' and the whole rap shit [a Martin and Ice T duet on 'Illusion of Power'] and then Ozzy came back and that was that. And that put bums on seats, but the sad thing is that they're still playing the same old songs from thirty years ago. And that's annoying, don't you think?" On whether he finds it frustrating that fans don't necessarily know just how big a part of BLACK SABBATH he was: "Yeah, but then it's almost as if I've been written out of the SABBATH history books and I don't know why really. All the books seem to go up to [ Ian] Gillan and stop and then say that it was Ozzy Osbourne again. They seem to have removed those ten years. It wasn't helped by me being absent for so long either, but it's not just that people forget that I was in SABBATH for ten years, it's that they've never told!" Read the entire interview at RockSomething.com.

black sabbath had only two singers:
ozzy ronnie james dio
every one else were the singers of tony iommi's band.
Tony Martin should stop complaining and move on just like paul dianno should do.
You never see glenn hughes and ian guillan complaining about not been mentioned that they were in black sabbath.

Yes you are. Your spamming the site with complete bullshit. You have to go to the doctor because you are either insane or metally retarded. Plus Black Sabbath has been around longer then slipknot. Their last studio album was released in 1995 while slipknot's first album was released in 1996.

All of the releases with Tony were rock solid and highly under-rated. I enjoy them immensely. I dunno why they never caught on.
Personally, I don't think that he sounded much like DIO. Martin's voice overall was far highter pitched than DIO, yet still very Metal.

ok Tony, all the true Sabbath fans know that you were a part of the band, so don't go exaggerating. no one wrote you out of their history. but you have to consider the fact that the albums you did with Black Sabbath were only mediocre at best. they weren't horrible, but they weren't that good. as a matter of fact, the only album that you sang on that was ok was Headless Cross.

WRONG!!!!!!!
Tony Martin needs to learn some Black Sabbath History.
The "Dehumanizer" CD that they released with Ronnie Dio in 1992 was the most success the band had in over a decade. They were getting their video for "TV Crimes" played on Mtv and even had a song on some movie soundtracks alongside other very succesful bands of the time. The CD sold more than any of the Tony Martin CD's.
It all broke down when Ozzy who was on his "No More Tours Tour" in 1992 and invited Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward to play a Black Sabbath set at the final two shows of the tour in Costa Mesa, Ca. Those two shows were supposed to be the final shows of Ozzy's career because He was supposed to be retiring from performing.
Tony and Geezer accepted the invite. Bill Ward couldn't do the shows for some reason. So, They did the Ozzy shows with Mike Bordin on drums.
Ronnie Dio got pissed off because they apparently never told him that they were invited to do the two shows with Ozzy and they accepted.
So, Ronnie James Dio QUIT the band!! Because, He felt they were going behind his back and trying to get back with Ozzy. They didn't kick Dio out and get Tony Martin back because they weren't succesful.
After Dio QUIT, Tony Iommi got Tony Martin back to do the "Forbidden" CD. Which of course was a complete flop. Like every other CD Tony Martin sang on.

Not only does this sound utterly stupid, but makes him come across as a bitter bitch.
This reminds me of a Black Sabbath (with Tony Martin) concert that a friend of mine went to back in the mid 90s. Motorhead opened for them and my friend told me that half the audience left when Lemmy and the boys finished their set.
You think that would have happened with a Dio fronted Sabbath?!

now that Ozzy is all washed up, old, and pathetic, who are they gonna get now? there were rumors that Dio was gonna come back since they are doing the Black Sabbath - Dio Years compilation (which will include one or two newly recorded songs with Ronnie), but these rumors have been shot down. a buddy of mine discussed this once, and we came up with a few different singers that should try out for Sabbath... Messiah Marcolin (from Candlemass), Wino (from Hidden Hand, The Obsessed, Spirit Caravan, Saint Vitus), or King Diamond.

Actually Bill Ward did play those Costa Mesa shows in 1992. Vinny Appice and Rob Halford played with Sabbath during the first set, but it was the original four that closed out the show.
Tony Martin does get slighted, it is true. He was a more than capable singer and songwriter, and does deserve his due. However, even a die-hard fan like myself has to admit that the Ozzy/Dio material is much superior.
By the way, my favorite album with Tony Martin on vocals is Cross Purposes. That is the only Sab album that features both Tony Martin and Geezer Butler. A shame that Cozy Powell wasn't on it as well. Anyway, there are some killer tunes on that album, definitely give it a try.

Sorry Mr. Martin, but you're not remembered for a reason- You were a weak frontman.
I've never considered him a Dio-clone, his singing was too wimpy.
Regarding the comment about fans not wanting Dio/Sabbath in '92... I think I read somewhere about it being true that Dehumanizer didn't sell as well as even TYR. If that's true, the formula is perfectly clear- Sabbath gained new fans with Headless Cross, thanks to Headbangers Ball at the time. These same new fans then bought TYR, and it sucked balls. These new fans were then very unwilling to take a chance with yet another new Sabbath album, and they didn't know who Dio was anyway. So in essence, it's the damage done by the wimpy Tony Martin that caused Dehumanizer, arguably the heaviest and best Black Sabbath album ever, to flop. And the record company's lack of promotion for the album was the icing on the cake, which meant that old fans that would have loved a new Dio-Sabbath album, didn't even know it came out. Sure, they made a video, but MTV sure as hell didn't play it very often. I remember seeing it on Headbangers' Ball once, and once only. It was the only reason I kept watching the then-in-decline show at the time, to catch that damn video again, and I never did.
And by the way Tony, Eternal Idol wasn't your damn album. Sure, you sang on it, but it was Ray Gillen's baby all the way, even with your replacement vocals.

even though "Born Again" somehow never impressed the critics, at least at the time, it's a killer album start to finish: from the high-speed boozy mayhem of "Trashed" to the haunting minimalist atmosphere of "The Dark" to the dark lunacy of "Disturbing the Priest" to the sheer weight of "Zero The Hero."
i love that album. if you don't know it buy it; you will cherish it.

Absolutely 1000%. So many great songs came after Ozzy, you could fill two sets full of them and still not run out of great songs to play.
And Tony Martin is a great singer, I saw Sabbath live in 1995 on the Forbidden tour, while the late Cozy Powell (RIP) was in the band:

Heaven and Hell is not only the best Sabbath album ever, but the best Metal album of all time, in my opinion. Born Again is great too. Now, as for Tony Martin, yes, i think the albums he recorded with Sabbath [Eternal Idol, Headless Cross. Tyr, Cross Purposes were all excellent. Forbidden was badly produced, and sounded like shit. What have i left out? Ah yes...Mob Rules was fantastic, as were Seventh Star, and Dehumanizer. Ok, i'm done now.

He's a solid performer but I can understand him feeling forgotten, he was the guy who sang for the band who had Ozzy, Dio, Gillian, Hughes and Gillen, you have to be a great performer and a personality to stand up to those names.

Ronnie Dio's contract didn't run out before those Ozzy shows in Costa Mesa. Dio got pissed off and QUIT!!!!
Plus, Dehumanizer was the most succes they had between 1982 and when they started doing the 1998 Reunion tour with Ozzy.
The text below was copied and pasted from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sabbath
Tony Iommi cleaned house in 1992 to reunite the classic 1980s lineup of Black Sabbath (although what was to become the Dehumanizer line-up had originally been Iommi/Butler/Powell before Cozy Powell suffered a hip injury) Founding member Geezer Butler, along with Ronnie James Dio and Vinny Appice, joined up with Tony Iommi once again (this was the same line-up from 1981's Mob Rules and 1982's Live Evil) and together they recorded Dehumanizer (1992). Playing to larger audiences than they had in nearly a decade, the rejuvenated Sabbath enjoyed renewed success with the Dehumanizer album and tour. It was around this time that Ozzy Osbourne announced his retirement from touring and proposed that Black Sabbath open his final two shows at Costa Mesa. When Dio refused to participate, Iommi, Butler and Appice agreed to appear without him. Dio quit to return to his highly successful solo band, and Rob Halford, Judas Priest singer, was brought in as a last-minute replacement (specifically for this event only). The original Black Sabbath lineup, including Bill Ward, reunited to close the second night of performances, on November 15, 1992, performing four songs. In the end, Ozzy Osbourne decided not to retire (following his "No More Tours" tour with the aptly titled "Retirement Sucks" tour), and contracts were all ready for a new album and tour from the original Black Sabbath line-up, but then Osbourne decided at the last minute that he did not want to do it. After the Dio/Halford debacle, Vinny Appice was replaced by former Rainbow drummer Bobby Rondinelli. Vocalist Tony Martin and keyboardist Geoff Nicholls returned to the band and Black Sabbath recorded Cross Purposes, and Cross Purposes Live, a CD and video combination, which was released in late 1994, after which Bobby Rondinelli left the group mid-tour. His replacement for the rest of the tour was, surprisingly, original Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward. After the tour, both Ward and Butler parted ways with Iommi, Martin, and Nicholls.

Yeah exactly. People didn't want Dio. All their charting UK singles I believe were released from the Ozzy lineup OR the Dio lineup. The Dio lineups albums also charted higher than all other Sabbath albums , save Ozzy's who's did just as good and some better. I bet the Dio albums are gold or platinum while the other ones besides Ozzy aren't.

I own everything by Sabbath and I love all the Ozzy and Dio stuff. Gillan was cool but he screamed entirely too much, Gillan himself hates Born Again but needed the cash. I can't stand Hughes period. Tony Martin was cool, I love Cross Purposes, TYR and yes I fuckin' love Forbidden the Ice-T part is very short and not rap, though that's the worst track of the album by far the rest is really good. In my opinion, if Ray Gillen would have stayed with BS they would have had more success. Why? he had a great voice, look and charisma...Martin just had a great voice which at times sounded generic.

He doesn't need to be written out, although the Sabbath releases with Tony Martin are the weakest in their catalogue. But that's hardly his fault, he was just wrongly cast. His voice doesn't fit Sabbath music at all!
However, Sabbath did turn into a fucking joke somewhere in the mid 80s. And they ditched Martin twice in order to regain their former glory. Which they never did. The newest song they play is from 1973...This band is definitely not able to create a new killer album. Spinal Tap indeed.
That being said, they are the most important metal band of all time, and for 10+ years they were my favourite band. Now they're a circus act, but their classics will never die.

He is a great singer and a big part of Sabbath's history and only ignorant people won't aknowledge that. How can someone compare Martin with someone like Glen Hughes???
Eternal Idol-very good album Headless Cross-Fantastic album TYR-Masterpiece on par with "Heaven and Hell" Cross purposes-great album
O.k i won't comment on Forbidden. The original line up of Balck Sabbath are a bunch of old sell-outs ,unfortunately with Ozzy being the worst.

Tony playing Headless Cross together with Helloween on Germany's Bang Your Head festival. His voice was in good shape, though he didn't get the original high notes. Headless Cross / When Death Calls / Valhalla etc. are fucking great, there's no doubt about that. But it's as well another style of songwriting compared to the Dio albums. I like both voices, Sabbath just wrote more good songs with Dio.

For me HE IS THE BEST BLACK SABBATH SINGER EVER! And those awesome albums... "Eternal Idol" "Headless Cross" "Tyr" "Cross Purposes" It was great time for Black Sabbath! I can't imagine how it is for Iommi who don't play a single note from albums that he's write from 1980. up to the 1995.! 15 years goes to the wind! At the same time Ozzy almost every year play his solo gigs... Tony Martin was ONLY Sabbath singer that played ALL Sabbath material, from ALL Sabbath singers! Great voice and great person (I watch and meet him last year in Hungary)!
HAIL TONY MARTIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HONESTLY, IF YOU REALLY LISTEN TO BOTH SINGERS, TONY MARTIN IS A BETTER VOCALIST THAN OZZY.
ETERNAL IDOL IS THE BEST BLACK SABBATH ALBUM; THAT ALBUM WAS BETTER THAN MOST OF THEIR OZZY SHIT

I know some of you guys are trying to prove how Metal you are by bashing the non-Ozzy/Dio Sabbath... I'm also pretty sure that most of you haven't even bought or heard one Tony Martin era Sabbath record.
In reality, Tony Martin and Ray Gillen could "technically" outsing any of those previous Sabbath singers.
There are elements of Dio in their tones... but, more refined.

1) Tony Martin was born in 1957. The Eternal Idol was recorded in 1987.
That would make him 30 years old or at least 29 going on 30. Not 27
2) There isn't a Black Sabbath fan in the who doesn't know the names Tony Martin or Geoff Nichols. Unless they got on board after the 96 reunion. He should go on Iommi.com or Black-Sabbath.com to see how many people know who he is.
3) Like it was mentioned he gets a lot of attention in books, magazines and the internet for his time in Sabbath. VH1 doesn't mention him. Who cares?
4) He didn't do nearly enough high profile gigs to keep people interested when he left Sabbath. He did some great projects. But for the most part they flew under the radar.
5) IRS records did a horrible job promoting Sabbath when Martin was in the band. Blame them.
6) Alot of fans did want the Dio reunion. I agree it was probably poorly timed and Costa Mesa never should have happened.
7) Martin was given the job of a lifetime. It's his own fault he didn't do more with it. No matter what he thinks, alot of people would have given their left nut to sing in BLACK SABBATH. Even in 1987. He should remember that.
8) He is an excellent singer. Always was always will be. He shouldn't blame Black Sabbath because his solo career hasn't done better.

I've been getting into the Tony Martin stuff over the past couple of months, and I think he has an amazing voice, and the stuff he recorded with Sabbath was great. I think he is worthy enough to be mentioned in the same breath as Ozzy and Dio. Hell, Martin appeared on more Sabbath albums than any other vocalist bar Ozzy - that makes him a legit Sabbath member in my books!
I fucking hated Born Again though. Gillan was good in Deep Purple, but he sounded like shit in Sabbath. I'd Martin over Gillan any day.

Highly underappreciated, but nevertheless a great singer! Period! Just check out his stuff with Dario Mollo or Giuntini 2&3 projects!!! They all kick ass!..... Beats Ozzy as a singer by 1000 times!!! Only, Ozzy has the showmanship and his bitch wife to do the dirty money-making deals for years... Heck, if Tony remained with Sabbath all those years after 1995, at least we wold have had some good rock material all that time. Instead, we have had this farce called Sabbath for almost ten years now... What a pity for such a great band just to wind up as a tool in Ozzy's hands and depend on his whims...
