Former DEEP PURPLE, OZZY OSBOURNE Members Pay Tribute To SYD BARRETT - July 13, 2006
Launch Radio Networks reports: Musicians and fans are still in shock over the death last week of PINK FLOYD founder Syd Barrett at the age of 60.

Former RAINBOW and DEEP PURPLE singer Joe Lynn Turner told Launch, "I don't know anyone that loved PINK FLOYD that wasn't influenced in some way by Barrett's presence and songwriting. He was a big voice in the band, although he was always overshadowed by the others. He was a true original, and there will never be another one like him again. He will be truly missed.

Former OZZY OSBOURNE bassist Bob Daisley told Launch, "His situation reminds me of Brian Jones's with the ROLLING STONES. In my opinion, without either of them, Brian and Syd, I think there would not have been a ROLLING STONES or a PINK FLOYD as we know them. Brian was probably there to welcome him into the place where the good musicians go, bless 'em both."

BEACH BOYS' Bruce Johnston, who did some of the vocal arrangements on the PINK FLOYD album "The Wall", told Launch, "Syd Barrett dreamed up the 'roots' path for PINK FLOYD to 'fill out' in future amazing albums. We might not have had 'The Wall' and 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' had it not been for Syd's early PINK FLOYD musical contributions."

JAMES GANG drummer Jimmy Fox told Launch, "Syd was an early example to us of what could be accomplished by thinking outside the traditional boundaries of rock music. His early work sounded like no one else and it caught our attention because it was so different, both musically and, especially, lyrically."

Pink Floyd remain one of the most influential groups of the last 40 years. Syd Barrett was a HUGE part of their history and hence, their legacy.

If you wish to dismiss them simply because they don't play detuned guitars or play songs at breakneck speed - it is really your loss.

If you listen to songs from their catalouge and cannot describe those songs as "heavy" - then you're a complete idiot.

But then again - most of you that post here are complete idiots.

So I shouldn't be surprised.

RIP Syd.

They are about the most amazing group of musicians and songwriters to ever grace this planet and put on a concert of a lifetime.

A GENIUS, A TRUE REBEL!
He influenced the PUNK scene too, with his rebellious attitude and antisocial behaviour, and his killer solo albums ("The Madcap Laughs", "Barrett" and "Opel") and the fact that he was one of the first, if not THE FIRST british artist NOT TO FAKE an american accent. Both the Sex Pistols and the Damned tried to hire him as a producer, Sid Vicious was a huge fan of his...Syd's seriously underrated.
Goodbye Mad Hatter, take care.

PS: Yes "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn" is simply incredible but his solo stuff is even better.

They distanced themselves from the movement, Syd Barrett and Roger Waters did so especially, and Barrett and Waters ARE PINK FLOYD. Gilmour is a great guitarist, and Wright is a great arranger and keyboard player, but Barrett and Waters WROTE THE SONGS.
No hippie could've written lyrics such as the ones from "The Wall", "The Final Cut" or even "Dark Side of the Moon".
Pink Floyd simply rule.

yeah and on heavyness, what about Brutal truth`s cover of Wish you were Here Suckers?
