METALLICA On Producer Change: 'We Want To Work With The Guy Who's Got Finger On The Pulse'
- July 14, 2006
AVENGED SEVENFOLD frontman M. Shadows interviewed METALLICA members Lars Ulrich (drums) and James Hetfield (vocals, guitar) for the latest issue of Revolver magazine (web site; see cover here) prior to METALLICA's headlining appearance at the Gelredome in Arnhem, Holland on June 8, 2006. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow:
M. Shadows: Why did you decide not to work with Bob Rock on your new album? And how is it working with Rick Rubin?
Lars Ulrich: "We're just getting started, really. 'St. Anger' was kind of an isolated experiment, where we wrote and recorded everything at the same time in the studio. But we're kind of back to the way we use to do it before 'St. Anger', which is kind of a writing phase and then a recording phase. Contrary to general belief, we're not actually in the recording phase yet — we're just writing. We've had half a dozen meetings with Rick, and he just comes up and listens. We're just kind of feeling each other out, kind of getting to know each other. Once we start the recording phase of it, which should hopefully be this fall, that's when his big input will come. In 1990, when we started using Bob, it was because Bob made all the best rock records that were going on at that time — MÖTLEY CRÜE, DAVID LEE ROTH, THE CULT — and he was involved in the engineering of all the BON JOVI records. Everything that was going on in the late Eighties was all about Bob Rock. And now, everything that's great about rock — from SLIPKNOT to SYSTEM OF A DOWN to the CHILI PEPPERS to MARS VOLTA, and even the JOHNNY CASH and NEIL DIAMOND records — it's all Rick Rubin. The same thing that brought us to Bob 15 years ago is now kind of bringing us to Rick. We want to work with the guy who's got the total finger on the pulse. And Bob was the first one to bless it, to say, 'Look, I don't know what else I can offer you 15 years later.' We finish each other's sentences. We know what he's going to say, and he knows what we're going to say. We made, what, like, five records with him? And he really had been the fifth member of our band for the last 15 years. As painful as it is, getting his blessing first was really important to us. So, so far, every side of it has been great."
M. Shadows: Music has changed a lot since you began, and I'm sure your influences have changed, as well. What drives you to continue playing, and what are your current influences in music and in life in general?
Lars Ulrich: "Honestly, it's you guys. Seriously! You guys put out music that inspires us, and I appreciate all the love we get from all of you guys, from TRIVIUM, from BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE — everybody. That's what inspires us — hearing people re-re-reinterpret what we've done in the same way that we re-reinterpreted BLACK SABBATH and everything through that whole lineage. You guys spit stuff back in our face, and it keeps us on our toes and fresh. We're all just music fans, and the reason we do what we do is because we love music. We're always listening to new stuff and trying to keep our finger on the pulse to the best of our abilities. And I'd say just being in a musical environment that continues to reinvent itself and be stimulating is what inspires us. We've been doing it so long. There's so many ups and downs and so many dynamics in the relationships. And I think what's really inspiring us right now is that we're all getting along, we're all really having fun. As you can see, there's no psychiatrists around — there's not all this bullshit going on. Phil ['enhancement coach' Phil Towle, whose group-therapy sessions with the band were captured in the 2004 documentary 'Some Kind of Monster'] said the whole time that all the work we were doing three or four years ago was going to pay off on the next record, not 'St. Anger'. And it's really true — every day going into the studio to write and seeing these guys, it's fun again. It's not like, 'Now I've gotta battle James Hetfield all day,' you know what I mean? And it's showing in everything — the way we play onstage and just the whole vibe."
James Hetfield: "Yeah, for sure. The fact that we don't know our potential, and we're still thriving for that ultimate thing — 'never satisfied' is both a curse and a blessing, you know? The next song you write is always going to be the best of your career. And bands like yourself are getting us to step up again and getting us to remember the roots where we came from. Also, hooking up with a Rick Rubin, another entity. It's like, 'Imagine if 'TALLICA did a record with Rick Rubin? Whoa, what would that be like?' There's a lot of untapped stuff, and we don't know where we can go until we try. Also, when you evolve in life, you listen to music differently than when you were younger. Songs from way back take on a whole new meaning and inspire you in a whole new way — especially lyrically."
M. Shadows: How has having a family changed your life on the road?
James Hetfield: "It's changed a lot. Just in terms of being out for long periods of time, I can't have it. I just won't do it. I'm not going to miss my kids growing up, you know? And if we are out — like the Download festival is on my daughter's birthday, and we're taking her out of school early and bringing her over for it. Stuff like that is pretty important — you don't get second chances at that. That doesn't mean that gigs will always be there for us, either, but there's a priority there. And having them live together… really, introducing them to each other was pretty important. You know, 'Family, meet band! Band, meet family! You're going to live together, so you've got to get along.' So that's going pretty good. And the fact that Lars and I are on the same page with the kids and the time off and the priorities — that is the saving grace with this band. I think if we were very different on that, it would be very difficult to get anything done. [Laughs]"
Lars Ulrich: "Yeah, it used to be METALLICA, and now it's family and METALLICA. Like James says, it's also helped us in our relationship, because our kids are exactly the same age. We have a lot of differences — the things we share are METALLICA and family — so little things like that really help us get along better and coexist, and that makes METALLICA better. Just a couple of weeks ago, before we came out here, we threw a little Memorial Day barbecue. His son and my son were playing air hockey together, and I was like, 'Wow this is really cool — the kids are getting along!' the fact that they can coexist in the same space makes everything a lot easier. You asked about life on the road, and obviously the days of two-year, never-ending tours and drunken blitzes and endless strip clubs and hookers and all that shit — it's a different thing. Back then, it was about staying on the road as long as possible — like, 'I don't wanna go home! I wanna fuckin' stay out here and get laid every night!' And now it's, like, two or three weeks max, and you've gotta get back and deal [with reality]. When I was your age, I was like, 'Fuck, having kids? Ugh!' But I'm proud to say that we've had kids and can still rock as hard as ever onstage. I know it's a cliché, and I know it sounds hokey to some 19-year-old kid, but we're playing harder now than in as long as I can remember, and playing better."
M. Shadows' entire interview with Ulrich and Hetfield is available in Revolver magazine's September 2006 issue, available on the newsstands now.

Agreed... but then we have to ask why Testament's last album was their heaviest ever, and Chuck Billy and Co. are all past 40 years of age? (yes, I know it was 7 years ago when The Gathering came out). I still don't think it has anything to do with age, but simply put, Metallica got tired of playing thrash, and I'm not sure that having kept Fleming Rasmussen instead of Bob Rock wouldn't have necessarily made a difference. This was obviously the direction they wanted to go in. As a counterpoint, the guys in Napalm Death are probably approaching their 40's, but are still heavier than 80% of the bullshit polluting our ears today. This was a conscious choice Metallica made, unfortunately, in going softer and slower with their sound.. all we can do is mourn..

Damn . I thing they uset to be METAL band , not just ROCK band. Also I'm not in that kind of vibe that System Of A Down, Slipknot, Nickleback , and bands like that are great . They all are just a eMpTyV products. Please 'tallica take back to all old influences like Maiden, Diamond Head, Mothorhead, Deep Purple if you like and left out these nu-metal shits.

What the fuck for? RectalLica flatlined years ago, and the last album Rubin wasn't on autopilot for was "One Hot Minute"...11 years ago. Maybe Andy Sneap could pull it off, but I doubt it. Re-Animator couldn't bring RectalLica back from the dead.

First off, Rick Rubin is just a phenominal producer. The fact that he can produce records by Jay-Z, Slayer, Neil Diamond, Johnny Cash, and Metallica, while making all of them amazing just attends to his credibility. Who else would you want to produce the new Metallica album? All of you old school Metaliheads should be thanking God that he is producing this album. Secondly, get past Master of Puppets and ....And Justice for All. If you want to listen to old Metallica, then do what the rest of us do and listen to it. Don't expect a band to make the same album over and over again. That is called selling out.

While "Load" is good, "Re-Load" is piece of shit, but it's GREAT in compare with "St. Crap"! Do anyone in Metallica is ever hear about some awesome real metal bands like - Dark Tranquillity, Symphony X, Children Of Bodom, Arch Enemy, Dream Theater, Moonspell, Paradise Lost, Morbid Angel, Behemoth, Vader, Amorphis... Those and many other bands are what's is suposed to inspire Metallica today. Also, do they listen last albums from they former thrash brothers - TESTAMENT, EXODUS, MEGADETH, SLAYER... Those bands still PLAY THRASH METAL AND THEY DIDN'T LOSE TOUCH WITH "NEW" MUSIC! Metallica was great band and I will love to see they return to they roots, but I doubt (only time will tell)!

a sell out, class, is a person who decides that making money is more important then making music
i.e. metallica... they played thrash... then they saw that they could make money by slowing it down... and down...
but...
you can sell out the same by playing the same music over and over again 'cause it makes money... so one can never be too sure who's the real sell outs
'cause you can: sell out by changing music sell out by not changing music
if the money is more important
sell outs... greedy greedy greedy (metallica) not sellouts... don't giva fuck about the green numbers (megadeth slayer)
ok? ok

Well, I was at the unholy Alliance Show In Vancouver, points of interest:
-They were filming the DVD for the Unholy Alliance Tour at the Vancouver Show Tonight. There was a Crane Camera set up and camera's to both sides of the stage, aswell as a camera behind the drum kit, and another Cameraman in the audience, right on the edge of the pit.
-The LOG singer puffed a joint of B.C's Finest on stage.
-Lamb of God Dedicated "As the palaces burn" to local madman Devin Townsend and the rest of the boys in Strapping Young Lad. He mentioned that they were on tour right now. (obviously made NO mention of ozzfest though...)
-Slayer only played for about an houer and 20 mins, but the show was excelant. - Slayer played "Cult" and "Eyes of the Insane" from the new album.
i know they have been playing "Cult" at all the shows, but I didnt think they have been playing "Eyes of the insane", maybe it was just for the DVD. And I have to say, I didnt realy think much of the Album version, but it sounded Realy good live. I was very suprised...
All in all, it was a pretty rockin' night. I Would rank the bands as follows...
SLAYER>Lamb Of God>Thine Eyes Bleed>Children Of Bodom>Mastodon I was very unimpressed by Mastodon. They looked like they were out of thier league when compaired to every other band on the bill.
Oh, and just for the record, Hanneman>King (no question)

For ex Slipknot, while being huge, truly ARE music lovers, they DO know bands, and namedrop them and let them open for them too. I remember a "hard of hearing" article on Terrorizer with Joey and Mick from Slipknot ("hard of hearing"=They make you listen to cds without telling you what you're listening to and you must guess who the artist is): They played Carcass, Suffocation, Dark Funeral, Darkthrone, and both guys NAILED each and every band. I'd love to see Metallica try and do that. It would be good fun indeed.

It will make people think you are fun and they will buy your cd's. And Justice for All and the albums before are great albums, otherwise I think they lost any energy, edge, and anything else that made those albums good. By the way, Revolver is a shit magazine. lars's choice of examples of rick's past production jobs says everything about where his head is at now..."chili peppers , mars volta and neil diamond" instead of slayer, trouble ,danzig and ac/dc.

Why do people hate bands that got famous? I mean, is it only possible for a "true" metal fan to like the shit that has sold only 2000 albums? God fuckin forbid someone likes a popular band!!!
Anyways
I'm psyched for the new CD. I'll be buying it the first day it comes out.

I LOVE many famous bands such as Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Slayer, Sex Pistols and so on.
I just dislike shitty bands, even more so if shitty hypocritical subhuman beings play in them. Fuck merdallica and all they stand for. They stand for posing, comprosing, saying one thing and doing another, doing it all for the money with no passion and no fire at all. They make me sick.

I have liked all of Metallica's albums. I don't think Load, Reload, or St. Anger sounded like anything else that was released in '96, '97, or '03. So how are they trend followers. Load wasn't Kill 'Em All, but it wasn't Cracked Rear View either. St. Anger sounded nothing like other albums that came out that year. Metallica do what ever they want to because they have earned that right and they deserve it.

People act like there was some meeting back in 89 or 90 where Metallica sat down and tried to figure out how they could make more money. As if they werent millionaires by that point already. I'm sorry, but I seriously doubt that the way they changed was as a result of some plan. I think it just happened. I think they just wrote some music that came out, and released it.

is too long to read. Metallica sucks end of story.
Metallica died when Cliff left us. St. Anger. What a disaster. One of the reviewers who heard the cd before we got said that the cd contained a hint of Messhugah. What a crock! Sugar not Messhugah. Newsted should have stayed with Flotsam and Jetsam and Robert should still be with Suicidal Tendencies. These guys are over the hill. Aerosmith's music is better than 'tallica NOW. I wonder what Cliff would be doing now and how Metallica would sound if he were alive? Would he still be IN th band? Load-Reload-S&M (Violins and Tubas? WTF). The ONLY good cd they put out with Newsted was the ORIGINAL Garage Days $5.98. All covers but it was HEAVY!
COMMENT | To Opt, 80's forever, and every other "metal" fan who doesn't know what selling out means posted by : badman 7/15/2006 1:57:13 AM
Actually, selling out is doing what others want you to do based solely on success and not what you really want to do in order to express yourself. This means that Metallica are actually anything but sellouts. Do any of you tools remember what the Black album sounded like? How popular was that album? I think that I can arguably say that it was one of the best selling heavy metal albums in history. Did Load sound anything like the black album? I don't think it did. If Load had been the black album II and had come out a year later, then and just about only then would Metallica have sold out. Most of you who accuse them of selling out and call yourselves true metalheads are the real sellouts because you fail to recognize an artists' right to do what they want to do and not what you want them to do.
COMMENT | Metalwarlord posted by : Metallica_sheep 7/15/2006 2:14:45 AM
One up to ya, dude.
Like the person above me said, you people carelessly throw around the word "sellout" just because a band sold an amount of records. If they wanted to sell out, we wouldn't have seen Load, Reload, or St. Anger. We would have more ...And Justice for All's and The Black Album's. But they did something most people here will never grasp: they played what they wanted to.
If you want to get the producer who REALLY has his finger on the "pulse" of music............no wait........METAL MUSIC, he's the beginning and the end. The Alpha and Omega of that which is metal! Not until they get him will the guys truly be challenged to make decent music to the best of their ability. That being said, thank God they got rid of Bob Rock.
What do ya'll think?

Metallica has been done for good since their black album, and there is nothing that anyone including them can do about it. They're finished and they need to realize that.
