BLACK SABBATH, JUDAS PRIEST And METALLICA Are 'Greatest Heavy Metal Bands Of All Time'

An MTV panel of heavy metal "experts," consisting of "nine die-hard, longtime fans," recently came together to compile a list of the "Greatest Heavy Metal Bands of All Time." "In part one [of the process], we reached out to the most passionate and knowledgable metal fans working at MTV and asked them to send us their individual picks for the 10 greatest, with the only criteria being 'whatever greatness means to you,' " MTV.com's Jon Wiederhorn explains. "Some feel that the influence a band had on others is the most important factor in judging greatness; others say the strength of the albums is the primary concern; and some believe the power of a band's live performance is the ultimate measure. We did not care what each participants criteria was; we only asked them to vote from their hearts. "Once we had all the lists, we did a little math. Every time a band was ranked #1 by someone, it received 10 points; #2 rankings received 9 points, and so on. When the points were added up, we had a list that represented the collective wisdom of the voters ... in theory, anyway. "In part two, we gathered everyone together, showed them the results, and asked them to either stand by it, or change it as they saw fit, the only rule being that a majority had to vote in favor of every change. deep purple, zepplin, Steppenwolf, hell Iron butterfly had more influence than most of the bands listed. These type of things are always way off base, Except Sabbath they deserve there spot.

Most lists are just a bunch of dudes dictating -- and not wondering what fans think. With this list, we all have an opportunity to tell MTV what we think the best metal bands of all time are.

I think the first six belong in the top ten, but the last four don't.
I don't care what anyone says, ACDC is NOT a metal band (great as they are) and Lemmy gets pissed as hell when people call Motorhead a metal band ("We're a ROCK & ROLL band!"), so that disqualifies them right there.
An arguement could be made for KISS, what with all the success they had in the 70's and all, but I still think they're more of a hard rock band than a bona fide heavy metal band.
As for Motley, well I might put em somewhere in say, the top 40, but number 10 is just ridiculous. But, they WERE among the MTV darlings back in the 80's, so I can see how they got bumped so high.
Anthrax definitely belongs in the top ten as one of the thrash pioneers and even though I don't really like Venom, they would have to be in there for virtually inventing the whole black metal genre.

SOAD doesent deserve any credit. SOAD aren't even metal. No mention of Bathory? Celtic Frost? Cannibal Corpse? Morbid Angel? Mayhem? Death? Testament? Those are some crucial bands. Atleast they didn't mention Slipknot or Korn. But MTV still sucks ass.

Why don't they get a panel of fans to decide this. They screw it up by even saying in the article....an MTV panel of metal "experts". MTV has no metal experts. Get a panel of 20 random fans and they would put together a MUCH better list. When you work for MTV or any of these other "music sources", your mind and taste in music gets distorted and diluted. Again, Kiss and Motley Crue??? Come on. The only ones who know the best and truest metal are the kids out there at the shows and living the life. If you work for MTV and VH1, you're not living "the life"

the bands i listed are heavier on thier weakest album than your heaviest band. Grunts Growls and blast double bass beats is real metal. Your band is only as good as your drummer. It's the opinion of a few other people and obviously has no bearing on what you think are the important bands. Another person's opinion should never affect you in such a way, it's like being angry that the guy standing next to you likes blue while you like green. So what they like "Band A," that's great for them, at least metal is getting more media coverage.

Fear_Factory06, who exactly is my band ? first of all I like alot of the bands you listed but faster and heavier doesn't always mean better, the cookie monster vocals are the downfall in my opinion, I mean Im all for heavy vocals with great lyrics but if you can't understand what they are saying or if it's too in your face it looses the power. Alice Cooper's I Love The Dead has a much bigger impact then a death metal band talking about rapping, fucking, eating, pukng out dead woman. Thats all Im saying.

I don't think bands influence over other bands e.g. Priest/NWOBHM/Metallica have anything to do with whoose better. Both bands are completely different "styles" of metal, just like Motorhead, old Sepultura and Sodom, similar singing in all 3 bands, very different musically. Motorhead influenced Sepultura (Max) and Sodom, yet we get a brutal death metal band, one of the leading German thrash metal bands and of course, classic Motorhead. all different.

I'd put Maiden over Metallica....

It definetly could have been worse. As much as I hate new Metallica, no one cadn deny their influence. Everything through And Justice for All was classic.
I LOVE Faith No More , AIC and Van Halen, but found them to be odd honorable mention choices. Say what you will, but I think Slipknot should have got an honorable mention along with Hatebreed. But Jamey was on the panel so that would have been wrong.
Great to see Tool get an honorable mention, they are a truly unique metal experience.

01. BLACK SABBATH - Ok fair enough in the Ozzy/Dio era, but they changed so many members through the 80's and lost it bigtime.
02. JUDAS PRIEST - Not a bad band, but definately not one of the best metal bands of all time
03. METALLICA - Should be up the top. Achieved more for metal than any other band
04. IRON MAIDEN - Should be below ACDC
05. PANTERA - Should be #3 behind Metallica and Sabbath
06. SLAYER - Wouldn't even be in the top 10 except for 1 exceptional album.
07. AC/DC - Not metal but they are rock Gods none the less.
08. MOTÖRHEAD - One of those bands that non-metal fans always name-drop.

I put AC/DC, AIC and FNM on my list because MTV mentioned them so obviously it isn't a metal top ten, its a hardrock/metal top ten. And yes, Iron Maiden are fucking overrated. They are listenable but not overly influential. Sure AC/DC may not be as complex or original as Maiden, but like the Rolling Stones, they are a groundbreaking rock band. If it was a true metal list I wouldn't have put those bands on there (except maybe Alice in Chains because they were a mix of metal and grunge).
I think that if MTV mention dick cheese bands like Kiss and Motley Crap in their top ten, then Guns N Roses should also be mentioned because Gunners kicked both of their asses.

This list should be the called the Top 10 "Metal Bands that are familiar to American Audiences, Including Some Rock Bands." That's why it seems off. And even with that, I think it should be the following...
01. BLACK SABBATH (INCLUDING EARLY OZZY) -- 10 or so classic albums. Easy choice.
02. JUDAS PRIEST -- NWOBHM, there would be no metal if they hadn't stepped in.
03. METALLICA -- Up to AJFA, of course. Because of how familiar audiences are with them, and how influential their tracks were, they deserve to be high on the list.
04. IRON MAIDEN -- Ton of classic albums, once again.
05. AC/DC -- Only a couple true classics after and including Back in Black, but you have to add in the many great Bon Scott albums too.
06. PANTERA -- Goes without saying.
07. SLAYER -- Not so many outstanding albums, but the classic 2 are untouchable.
08. MEGADETH -- Personally I think the first 4 Megadeth albums are better than the first 4 Metallica albums (everything after that should be ignored) but they never hit mainstream enough to be higher than Metallica in this type of list. Which isn't fair, whatever...
09. GUNS N ROSES -- Appetite for Destruction. Killed hair metal. Thank you.
10. MOTÖRHEAD -- Lots of classic tracks. Not so many classic albums though, IMHO.
Yeah I know, "Those are ROCK bands! Not METAL!" I'm making the same type of list as MTV. I would pick different bands for a REAL Metal list, just like everyone else here.
Crue and KISS should not be in any list. I think that the MTV confuses stage presence with musical influence.

Black Sabbath had a lot of blues elements.
"Metal" is just another blanket to appeal to people who are narrow minded morons.
AC/DC? Yeah, that's even funnier...
Bands like Yes were around having edgy sounds as well.. but these old bands aren't that heavy... Now we have KORN-eque thuds and majorly distorded industrial sounds...
MTV is just a money machine.. Black Sabbath didn't start this wide spread genre of music.. They just evolved as a blues/ "rock n' roll"/ doom band.... since the guitar came along, many bands experimented... music evolves...
Beethoven had some heavy compositions...

Mine for what its worth (Thrash, Death tainted)
1. Sabbath (They started it all)
2. Priest (The look, sound, longevity)
3. Metallica ('83 KTA through AJFA were revolutionary)
4. Slayer (Concerts, and Reign in Blood)
5. Celtic Frost ('83 Morbid Tales was fast and death ridden)
6. Iron Maiden ('80 album and longevity)
7. Pantera (Power riffs that are unforgettable)
8. Death (created various genres with Scream Bloody Gore)
9. Anthrax (longevity, crossover)
10. Motley Crue ('81 TFFL through Theatre of Pain changed things)
Kiss during the 70's was extreme and depending on how they evolved could've been seen as metal, but they choose a more Rock style then Metal so I don't count them as a metal band, but they influenced countless metal bands. Same for Van halen & Zepplin.
Have to admit there was no way I was going to put Motley Crue on my list until I remembered that Too Fast For Love was released back in 1981...had to give them props. Hate them now, but the first 2 albums were pretty defining then.
Honorable Mention to Sepultura during Max Days, and Dark Angel.

The entire problem with this is that everyone who was remotely a metal fan was ripped out of MTV when they got rid of Headbangers Ball. Nobody there really has a grasp on things that don't play on the radio.

M-tv Blows chow...but I agree with their list, for the most part ..I agree that Kiss, Crue, Zepplin, and Ac Dc are hard rock...but some of you guys know absolutely nothing of the history of metal...Priest is definately higher on the list than Maiden or Metallica (Just ask the guys in either band..they'll tell you)..This list isn't about who sold the most albums...nor is it about who is the heavist, darkest, or most satanic... some of you guys lists are just plain stupid...Celtic Frosted Flakes???? Are you kidding me??? King Diamond??? WTF!!! I liked Merciful fate, Raven, and the like...but they don't desrve to be on that list ...and no way in hell should megadeth be above metallica.....you guys all forget your past...it might be hard but think back to the 80's before you mention some shitty band.
