DEICIDE Concert In Texas Shut Down By Cops; Guitarist RALPH SANTOLLA Arrested

DEICIDE's concert at the Hustlers in Laredo, TX Friday night (July 14) was reportedly shut down by the police after four songs and DEICIDE guitarist Ralph Santolla was apparently arrested during the ensuing chaos. The following two separate accounts of last night's events were submitted by BLABBERMOUTH.NET readers who attended the show:
Report #1: "Some business went bad with Glen Benton [DEICIDE frontman] and the promoter, and there was major power/sound problems for DEICIDE... Needless to say, Glen voiced his unhappiness over the PA during their set... bottles flew, DEICIDE guitarist Ralph got arrested, chaos ensued, and about 12 police cars, a SWAT team, and other law enforcement people showed up and cleared the place out. I don't have any other details as I was [elsewhere] when the real craziness happened, so most of my details here are second-hand (other than seeing all the cops and SWAT guys)."
Report #2: "Apparently, the entire night went wrong. The cops showed up and one of the guitarists from DEICIDE [allegedly] threw a Red Bull at one of the officers and the officer chased him and ended up spraying him with pepper spray and arresting him. Glen Benton kept complaining that the promoters had ripped him off and threatened to walk off stage. But the cops shut the show down after four songs and sent everyone home. Bad day in South Texas."

One time in the early nineties I saw Deicide at the Thirsty Whale in Chicago and they had major sound problems witht the vocals. Glen hit the sound guy in the face with the base of the mic stand after like three songs. He said, "Fuck it, we're doin the rest of the show with no vocals!!" They did another half hour or so with no vocals. It was odd, but kinda cool to see them with no vocals.

First off it wasn't at the rio grande plaza it was a piece of shit bar called Hustlers. Yes the PA fucking sucked ass and Glen was bitching about it .... According to people that talk to the band they didnt even get payed half of what they were promised. The cops were called by the promoter because they got scared becasue Benton was threating to burn the place down. Yea Right ....

I could swear I remember some story about Glen Benton where they played the Thirsty Whale back in the day and some dude in the front row spit on his face. He supposedly got pissed and told the crowd to go fuck themselves and walked off the stage.
Maybe the story got strewed a bit, but that's just what I remember hearing.

What good does acting like that do to get the power/p.a. back on? I guess I don't understand why the cops HAD to show up. If everyone would've acted like mature adults, I'm sure nothing bad would've happened. Shame on the club for not having enough power to support a real rock'n'roll show. I was not present at any of these shows..the closest one would be McAllen, yet I was not available to go...but I bet they knew how to run with a good P.A. and sound in that venue..Vital Remains played there not that much before them, and I was told it was a great show...It aint the band's fault, it is the promoters fault...for not meeting their end of the deal. Benton is a fucking physcho, yet, what would you expect when the sales of their previous album didnt make that much cash and he needs to support his family..He's gonna get his money one way or the other....Just my opinion....

Yeah, I'm in Arlington Heights. I was fortunate enough to see some shows at the Whale, though I was just a lad. I didn't catch Deicide anytime there, but that's just what I heard, like I was saying.
On a semi-related note, I caught what I think was the last show there at the Whale, which was with Dissection, At the Gates, and Morbid Angel if I remember correctly. The place was loud as shit. It was still killer. I remember seeing one dude hanging off the ceiling(since it was so low) and putting every ounce of his energy into headbanging.
In summation: it was sweet.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't get all the cop hate here. Are all cops honest and noble... no. But there are plenty out there who are just trying to do their job and help people and their community.
From what I read on this article, it seems they showed up to do a job. It wasn't as if they ran in there to tear up the place, at least not according to the article. It seems they were called for crowd control to keep things under control in case any riots or whatnot may ensue.
As for Ralph being arrested. Well, if the article is correct and he threw a bottle at a cop... well, no shit. What do you expect if you throw something at a cop? Him to smile and give you a nice, big hug?
I'm sure there is obviously more to this story and most here don't know everything. But still, just going with what we have, it seems a lot of people just wanna vent their frustrations towards cops.
That said, sucks that everything went wrong at the show, the fans got screwed in the end the most.

i was there and i can totally say that no one knows what went down. According to this lady that was hanging around the merchandise table and was at the bar when glen was throwing his hissy fit, It was Deicide who called the cops. They wanted their fuckin money like they were promised. If anyone is up to blame for all this is the promotors of the show. They are unprofessional and dont back up their word of mouth. in West Palm Beach at Club 21 North. I saw then play not even one song and all hell broke loose.
Fights broke out , the microphone stands were knocked to the ground because of the people rushing the stage that was too low to the ground. The DJ jumped down from the 2nd story DJ booth , and landed on the pool table; and broke a pool stick in half and started cracking heads with his half stick. People were being thrown through the air. ahhhh.... the good old days.

They were probably on a power trip, armed with their bibles and pepper spray ready to "exorcise" Deicide. Its not a very good idea to start shit with cops cuz you WILL BE OUTNUMBERED. Anyway, Deicide are a band 14 year olds would listen to, hence I outgrew their music 10 years ago and that Satanic shit is a waste of time.
I actually kinda pity Benton, afterall he did mention he was living below the poverty line. If his music career ends, maybe he should consider going to school, earning a degree and finding a well paying job to support his family.

I live in the New England area and theres been a few clubs in the past 5 years that have closed down.Just goes to show that "REAL" Metal is dying fast here in the USA.No one is supporting the shows unless its emo/metalcore/numetal.
Jarrods Place-Attleboro,MA-Torn down and replaced by condos
Bombshelter-Manchester,NH-Closed down because the owner wasnt making enough money and couldnt afford to pay the rent
Club 125-Haverhill,MA-Same reason why the Bombshelter closed
Sharpshooters-Manchester,NH-Closed down because the owner went to jail for tax fraud
As far as this chaos at Deicide shows,this is just the result of Glen having PMS.Ive only gotten the chance to see them once because their banned in my home state(sexual assault charges against Glen back in 1999).But I do plan on seeing them in the fall in Hartford.Thats if they dont fucking cancel.

Yes it is True Glen Benton and Deicide Told us about 7pm They only wanted One other Band To play Besides them Ringworm and Lupara
We did Not Shaft Deicide with Money
Yes Infact Hustlers/Us called the cops because we were threatned aswell as the owners by Glen Benton that he was going to Tear Down the Place and he was Getting People Hyped Up
The Events that took place were Out of Our control... We had no control over what deicide did but we did correct it... For your Safety and The Other bands

back in 92 in OKC. Saw them w/ friends Dead Orchestra. Benton came on their Bus ( Dead O's) smoked alot of their weed, when he left he thought he was hanging out Sick Of It All. This fat fucker doesn't live below the poverty line!! He lives in a nice house and drives a nice car (thanks to his wife). His money goes to ex-wives and he has two kids to pay for. But that's really not anybody's business. If he's telling people he lives below the poverty line, he's fucking lying, as usual. The fact of the matter is, his career is pretty much over and the poor slob doesn't know how to do anything else. It's really quite pathetic if you think about it. As for Ralph, he used to be a really great person. But once you get involved with Benton, he can turn you into a completely different person. He's a lot like the plague. Let me ask you this Wickedpissa. So, your band agress to play for $5,000. Night of show, nobody shows and your band only sells $2,300. Why is the promoter supposed to eat the loss because your shitty ass band can't sell tickets. Granted, I understand promoters are pretty ruthless but come on dude. As for Ralph throwing the can into the crowd and hitting a cop by "MISTAKE"? Your definately reaching there dude. Maybe Deicide should stick to playing local area VFW'S??

I do not like decide but I have played in Laredo several time. If he got any money at all he was lucky. It is the worst scene I ever seen.

The guys that set up the show are a joke. As far as Laredo Police they are all hispanic. That is 2 miles from the border. The radio stations and the bands set these shows up in this town and they all try to stick the money in thier pockets. I have played there maybe 10 times. I was living there.
