IRON MAIDEN: 'The Reincarnation Of Benjamin Breeg' Video Posted Online - July 16, 2006
IRON MAIDEN's video for their new single, "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg", has been made available for streaming at the following links: Location#1, Location#2.

Kerrang! magazine has previously described "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg" as "an intricate seven-minute epic that starts with a creepy, ominous intro before erupting into a crushing, almost LED ZEPPELIN-esque riff and a powerful, emotive chorus. More obtuse lyrically than most of the album, it's a curious, challenging choice for a single."

"It's very different for us," admitted the band's bassist, Steve Harris. "It's very riffy. The intro has an almost nursery rhyme eeriness. Sometimes you try to create a mood and sometimes it's just there. Everyone's going to ask who Benjamin Breeg is, but you'll just have to find out for yourself!"

IRON MAIDEN's new studio album, entitled "A Matter of Life and Death", is scheduled for release on August 26 in Australia, and August 28 in Europe. A U.S. release is expected in early September. "The Reincarnation of Benjamin Breeg" single will precede the album on August 14.

"A Matter of Life and Death" was recorded at Sarm West Studios in London with producer Kevin Shirley, who also worked on the last two MAIDEN albums, 2000's "Brave New World" and 2003's "Dance of Death".

The song is anything but your typical "single".Atmospheric and heavy.Bruce is in top form and the chorus is absolutely brilliant.

Such a cool song. A bit out of the Maiden formula which is really cool to hear. This album, if this is any indication, could be the one to get them back to headlining major arenas in the US.

They should get Saxon and a couple of newer Brit metal bands and do MaidenFest or another invasion tour.

Hey its more aggressive cool which is what the wankers been missing and the riffs are cool and heavy. Now the bad side I think The song is still over dramatized and a bit too long who needs 7 minutes of it I mean I don't know if thy are deliberately trying to keep those already beaten to death gloomy intros but they should have canned those . Its in the begenning and at the end but hey I could stand it. Hopefully there are more cool tracks in there down the line with more speed and less cheesy intros was about to break out my own fog machine here. Good idea on the not mastering thing as it culd have been too plished a production. I'll be interested in hearing more. I feeel they are prolly a bit more aggressive sounding on this cd which is what Maidden been missing or criticized for or is it the age. lol ok carry on wayward sons and daughters....

Benjamin Breeg was born in London on September 3rd, 1939.
After the deaths of his parents in a house fire in September, 1947, Breeg was sent to an orphanage in the East End. The cause of the fatal fire, to this day, remains unexplained. Breeg himself was present in the house at the time but escaped unharmed.

He was a bright child but very solitary, prompting one of his carers at the orphanage to state: "He has the demeanour of a child who seems to bear more weight upon his shoulders than any person should. What goes on behind his eyes makes one wonder what's troubling him." As well as his academic interests, Breeg also became interested in The Bible and expressed a desire to join the clergy.

Breeg was fostered by three families between 1947 and 1950 but each time, he was returned to the orphanage, unable to settle in any of the new homes that had offered to raise him.It was on his tenth birthday in 1949, that he began to experience nightmares that he himself later described as "the most vile and tortuous I have ever endured." Despite this, he went on to develop incredible talent as an artist and produced a large number of drawings, sketches and paintings. However, none of these survive and are believed to have been destroyed by Breeg himself. To this day, no one knows why. The subjects of these paintings, however, supposedly caused great consternation and distress among those who Breeg allowed to view them.

The verdict of one close friend who saw some of Breeg's work is as follows: "He says he paints what he sees. If this is true, I can only thank God I have no window into his mind."

Breeg's first job on leaving the orphanage, in 1954, was at a local Undertakers, where he was given the task of engraving headstones. His interest in the Bible had by now turned into what a colleague deemed to be "obsessive". He lived alone and little is known about his life between 1955 and 1959 other than that his interest in joining the clergy diminished. His obsession with the Bible, however, did not.

Breeg travelled widely between 1960 and 1970, visiting many different countries. Living for two years in Haiti before travelling to Eastern Europe where he lived between 1966 and 1969. He was forced to flee from Romania in 1969 following local Police investigations. He returned to England in March 1971. Upon his return, he was offered a position with the International Institute of Paranormal Investigation which he accepted.

Breeg wrote four books between 1971 and 1977. None of these, as far as can be ascertained, remain in print. All, however, concern the sights and cultures Breeg experienced while travelling. The emphasis in all four volumes is on the Occult practices of the countries visited.

Benjamin Breeg disappeared from his home on June 18th, 1978. All efforts to locate him proved unsuccessful.

Metallica, take note. If you want to change your sound, do it the way Maiden just did with this song. TROBB is one kick-ass song. Those riffs are fantastic, and the bass is your new god. If you don't like the song, it's because you most likely decided you were going to hate it beforehand. This song is heavy as hell, and just to remind you, the people who made it are around the age of 50. Even at this age, they can come up with something heavy-as-hell that most bands could never come up with. UP THE MOTHERFUCKIN" IRONS!!!!!!!!!

Do you guys remember "The Number of The Beast", "Power Slave", "Somewhere In Time?" and "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son"?

Do you remember when Maiden songs didn't labor on sounding as if they're about to collapse under their own weight?

My god... can these guys play something FAST anymore?

Geeze... this isn't as bad as most of DANCE OF DEATH but it's not exactly a leap forward.

Quit the fanboyism and look at the song objectively... it's not terrible but it's not great either.

I knew it would not take long for the negative comments to pop up...

For crying out loud....it's Iron Maiden...It is not like they are going to re-invent the wheel or something...

Their weakest material is still far beyond what most bands put out these days...

NOTE: That is my opinion...so all the little children can refrain from having to defend their bands to me....get over it already.

I'm tired of the bass-with-clunky-guitars intro that we've heard athousand times, but when the song gets going it's pretty good.

I'll have to wait until I get it in my stereo, but the snare and bass drums sound nice and crisp, and the guitars are nicely distorted and crisp as well.; more of that feedback is good.

Personally, I perfer the faster songs. Hopefully the album will give us the same production and skill with a little more tempo!

Why would someone listen to Tool when there's this?

I haven't bought a Maiden album since "Somewhere in Time", but I'm definitely buying this the 1st day. I'd love to see Maiden do "an evening with..." behind this album; an hour-long 1st set, an intermission, and a 90-minute 2nd set. This song would be the perfect way to start the 2nd set!

plur

p.s. whomever it was that said there were no harmony guitars on this song: my computer speakers kinda suck...but they don't suck that bad. Harmony part started at about 4:45.

I respect Iron Maiden for their importance and influence, but beyond that, the only thing that I like about their sound is the dual guitars. Their image and lyrical content is mostly cheesy and I cannot stand the soaring power vocals. Don't get me wrong, Dickinson and Rob Halford and whoever else are talented singers with great range, but I hate the wail. I would much rather hear a growl, a lower pitched yell/scream, or Peter Steele. I don't think it gets any better than Phil Anselmo on VDOP or Jim Hetfield on AJFA. As for Maiden, as long as they get it done for somebody, hell, keep on going. As long as you're not a joke like the Stones or Aerosmith.

Bruce's vocals are the shining moments of the song, but being a Maiden fan for 23 years now I could say that this isn't groundbreaking in the Maiden realm of things. This album has already been getting huge hype for the past twp months online. However, this song and video in my view just doesn't please my senses. I'll still purchase the album though.

First of all, this song is far better than Wildest Dreams from DOD which was basically trying to The Trooper or Aces High without the intensity or energy. I am wildly disapointed by the video itself, because I expected a really cool concept video rather than another excuse for self-vanity. As for the song, The riffs are great and very intense. This song has a sludgy and powerfull vibe not heard since Seventh Son days. The intro vocals really grow on you with repeat listens, and become almost haunting. The length has been complained about on this board, and I honestly thought the same thing on first listen, but the structure of the song has grown on me a bit. The drumming is particularily strong, and it has definetly piqued my interest for the rest of the album. I think this is a song that grows on repeat listens, which is a pretty strong sign

The best you can say about this song is that it's fine. Not thrilling, nothing truly exciting, but fine. But fine is boring and Maiden never used to settle for it.

Harris still doesn't know shit about matching the accent of a given word with the meter of a corresponding line-- so he winds up making Bruce sound like Blaze.

He's also actually stealing from himself, now. That chorus is a complete rehash of Dream of Mirrors. (And the intro is basically Paschendale.)

So we find yet again that Shirley's studio updates are complete bullshit hype.

If this is truly the highlight of the album, y'all are gonna be catching zzz's very soon.

Benjamin Breeg: "Someone to save me from myself. . ."

this is something special. being a maiden fan for 20 years and playing in a lots of band for 16 gives me credibility to say whatever I want.
I will always buy a new maiden album, I will always go to see them live, but this is just wrong!!
good points:
1) Bruce sings great, his voice has matured a lot since he left maiden and this sounds almost as good as his solo material
2) Davey shreds as good as always
3) Nicko is surprisingly good, almost back to his old form. Some quick breaks here and there and a rather groovy rythm.
bad points:
1) Structure of the songs is complete bullsh*t! Why does Harris always have to add his freakind 6/8 tempo bling-blong on the bass?? He takes credits for this song only for intro/outro and that rather pathetic attempt to make an odd-tempo introduction to Davey's solo. He should have left Dave make a song himself, he proved before he can do a hell of a job!!!
Harry please, for once and for all, admit that you lost your songwriting touch and just stop copy-pasting Fear of the Dark bass groove into any future Maiden song if possible! Please!!
You have Dickinson and Smith back in the ranks, let them take the lead now, there is nothing wrong in that!
I mean, I don't want Maiden to sound like Bruce solo, but there is a classic Maiden sound and there is Virtual XI sound- don't go there again!!!
2) Tempo of the song is to slow, add some 10-20bpm and you gotta a galloping maiden classic. Probably it will sound nice live, but would have been much tighter and groovier song! Nicko could have shown all his potential. This way it sounds like a lame version of Stranger in a Strange Land.
Hope that the rest of the album will prove me wrong, but this + DOD looks like downward road for Maiden…to my sincere disappointment..

There were points that were sort of cool, but there were also points that sounded like a build-up towards a faster song that never materialized. On the whole, a mediocre song.
