KORN Guitarist To Launch 'Multi-Genre' Record Label
- July 19, 2006
|
|
|
KORN guitarist James "Munky" Shaffer has announced plans to form his own record company.
"I'm looking to put together a really eclectic record label that's only for the artists," Munky said during a live appearance on the nationally syndicated radio show "Rockline" this past Monday (July 17). "I want to give back what I've been given, which is the opportunity to make music and make a living. I want it to be multi-genre — hip hop, rock, jazz. I want to sign a jazz band later. Right now I have three acts that I'm about to sign so I'm really excited."
KORN played two songs acoustically last night (Tuesday, July 18) on ABC-TV's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" The performance marked only the second national television appearance ever by KORN, following last year's spot as the musical guests on "Saturday Night Live". It's also just the second unplugged performance of the band's career after a four-song stint on AOL's "Acoustic Sessions" this past April. The group performed singles "Twisted Transistor" and "Coming Undone", both from its latest studio album, "See You On The Other Side".
As for whether KORN plans to incorporate acoustic sets into its headlining run on the upcoming Family Values tour, singer Jonathan Davis recently told Launch he hasn't ruled it out. "Everyone's asking that and I don't know," he said. "We'll see once we get into rehearsals. It would be cool 'cause we've been doing it a lot lately and everybody's really been responding to it and liking it a lot, so we'll see. I don't know. It's just, it's weird — I think it would have to be acoustic, all acoustic, or all heavy. I don't know. We'll have to see."
Davis has been home in Los Angeles recovering from a rare and potentially fatal blood disorder that forced KORN to cancel most of a European tour last month.
The band will begin its headlining stint on the Family Values tour on July 27 in Virginia Beach, Virginia, with DEFTONES, STONE SOUR, 10 YEARS, FLYLEAF and others.
KORN has added a handful of solo headlining dates around Family Values stops, including August 1 in Orlando, Florida, August 8 in Corpus Christi, Texas, and August 9 in Oklahoma City.

How shallow can you be????
Why can't Munky like other types of music instead of (Nu)metal?
That's like saying JackieChan only eats Chinese food. I'm sure you like other kinds of food, don't you?

^ yeah, good idea for a guy facing the end of his music career to make some more money. Something tells me he wouldn't know jazz (or music in general) from a hole in the wall.

This guy may be a crappy guitarist in a crappy band, but it's good to hear that he will try to sign more than just metal artists. Hopefully he sticks with his plan, and doesn't end up signing nu metal bands.
And I love metal (obviously), but for the record - If you trash Jazz, then you know nothing about music, and you can pretty much kiss any hope you had of being a good musician goodbye. I'd like to see Jackie Chan play guitar against Alan Holdsworth. But he'd probably end up getting some sort of stunt double, right Jackie?

though the all caps makes it look immature.
By the way, showing an interest in jazz and other genres is acting like your in a metal band...Country, Rock/Metal, HipHop, Jazz, etc...musicians all have tastes in other genres than their own, it's not like they're in that certain genre so they're legally binded to only listen to one genre and have no free will to listen to what they like.

It would be better to just not do that. Continue making sucky music with YOUR band, not helping other people make sucky music.

"crappy guitarist?"
You heard me. He totally sucks. I own a seven-string Ibanez myself, and I could play the entire "Twisted Transistor"* song the day they released it as a single. And I haven't played guitar for nearly as long as Munky has.
*I can also play "Coming Undone".

...it doesn´t mean that the guitarrist can´t play or sucks.
Smoke on the Water is really easy to play... tell me that Deep Purple has no technique? A lot of Zepellin and Sabbath songs are really easy to play also... do they suck ?
It´s not about technique... it´s about good ideas!

I think Jon Davis ran that piece of shit label. The last artist signed to Elementree was a rapper by the name of Marz, Jesus Christ I don't know why though. It wouldn't surprise me if Munky signed Deadsy to his label after they get dropped by whoever they're on now. Korn has shown that band way too much love, especially since they blow. As far as Munky's talent and ability, I think he is a talented musician who has ran out of ideas so he plays these two chord pieces of shit called songs. Somebody needs to beat these fuckers up so they'll go back to making heavy, angry, and not overproduced music like they used to.

Until most of you people on this board enjoy the success Korn has had, I can't take any of your hateful feedback seriously. The most initiative some of you all take is to post on the boards. Oooohhhh...I'm soooo impressed. And for those that have such disdain for Korn and nuMetal, it's ironic that you spend this much time talking about these topics. Clearly, they're doing something right. And don't worry, we fans will keep them going for a long time to come...live with it.

I'm a professional musician. You don't have to fucking shred or do technical solos to be talented. Although I do use these techniques in my music, I still respect players of other styles that do not. The man writes simple music and he is pretty good at it. I'm not saying you have to like the shit. As far his tone, I used to like the raw sound of the 7-string on the first album, but I haven't really heard too much new shit so I can't judge. Jazz owns all other music anyways...
