Review: OZZY OSBOURNE Doesn't Live Up To His Legend At OZZFEST

Jon M. Gilbertson of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reviewed this year's Ozzfest when it hit the the Alpine Valley Music Theatre in East Troy, Wisconsin on Saturday (July 22). An excerpt from his review follows: The traveling heavy-metal mega-show known as Ozzfest has lasted for 11 years thus far, and a lot of that longevity might have to do with the man for whom the festival is named: John Michael Osbourne, a.k.a. Ozzy. Nevertheless, when his festival stopped by the Alpine Valley Music Theatre on Saturday, Ozzy was headlining the second stage (normally for lesser-known bands) about 4 p.m. (so as not to interfere with the main stage's entertainment, which began after his set odd scheduling for a man nicknamed "the Prince of Darkness"). If he didn't melt in the light, he didn't shine, either. He displayed his usual demeanors — that of a 12-year-old child when excited about audience response and that of a schoolmarm when gently exasperated about insufficient audience response — but he didn't match his legend. Normally, the classic songs, from power ballad "Mama, I'm Coming Home" to the ever-barreling "Crazy Train", would have carried Ozzy, as would have the solid three- piece band, including solo-heavy guitarist Zakk Wylde. Yet Ozzy was not in tune, vocally, with the band or in sync with the crowd, problems all the more sadly evident without the sort of eerie, Halloween-style power he can have under cover of night. This guy is missing the whole point. Ozzy is obviously declining in his voice and energy, but I for one am excited to see him in a more intimate setting for a change. I'm sick of big stages with seating. G.A. all the way!

I work at Alpine Valley Music Theater here in Wi. and I have to say, from what I was told by concert-goers, Ozzy's performance was a little under-par. Some of it is because of his age, and also because its hes playing at 4:00, and its still daylight. I personally liked the performance, caught most of it while on my break. People felt odd about seeing the OZZMAN during the day and in such a small area. The second stage at Alpine was only allowed to bring in 4,000 people, so many of them were pissed off. Which is very understandable.
Overall though, this years Ozzfest sucks ass, aside from SYL, Dragonforce, BLS, and of course, the Oz, it was all crap. I had to stand there and watch as Avenge Sevenfold make a mockery out of Pantera's "Walk". Turned into shambles. Disturbed suprised me. I dont hate the band, and gained more respect for them, they put on a good show, I especially liked the Genesis cover they did "Land of Confusion" they covered it very nicely and added some good hard metal sounds to it. SOAD can lick my hairy crack for all I care, they fucking suck. Aside from all of that, it was a pretty bad day. Take what that butt-puppet from the Journal Sentinal wrote with a BIG grain of salt and maybe a shot of penicilin, hes a douche. Fly On!

On Ozzy, every perfromer has bad days, I heard that Ozzy was (when not hoarse) singing quite well. I cringed more often a Dream Theater show, Labrie shouldn't try to sing as high a HE thinks he can, he starts screaming and loses all pronounciation.

It's a shame its going down to thist, but we all knew it would eventually happen. I wouldnt mind seeing ozzy on the 2nd stage fuck assisnged seating they need to re-make most of the venues where ozzfest is held and have a general admission part on the floor so people can really get into the music instead of standing with a thumb up their ass. As far as that list goes David Draimin should not be there not even top 5, you can't put him on the same list as Dickinson and Halford thats just not right

Your review is that of what a 14 year old would say.Ozzy is headlining the Second stage So people dont have to wait until 10:00 p.m. to see him.Ozzy Osbourne fans know what I am talking about,they dont have to sit through bands that they dont care for just to see Ozzy and the oppressive heat has drained you by 10:00 p.m.I think its great that Ozzy is headlining the second stage.Your review was pure trash !!

I was there, I kinda agree with the article, but he's old. I wasn't there for him anyway, I was there for two reasons only The Red Chord, and Strapping Young Lad. I saw and met them both, mission accomplished, the other bands suck.

I was at the Alpine show and I enjoyed Ozzy more than the past couple of times I have seen him. He had a lot more energy and he seemes so thrilled that he could see all the fans.

I have to disagree 100%.I was at the East Troy Ozzfest and Ozzy was awesome,especially when it started raining while he was singing.That was amazing live.My dads seen him live like 8 or 9 times and he said this has to be one of the best performances of Ozzy hes seen.And that Zakk Wylde 10-15 min. solo blew my mind.I'll never forget that as long as I live.Hes truly the best guitarist alive today. Bands that were good live:Atreyu,BLS was awesome.Hatebreed was really good,got the crowd REALLY into it.Avenged Sevenfold was really good.Disturbed, a lot of people were into them.And finally,System Of A Down was reallllly awesome live.
Oh and I met All That Remains,Bleeding Through and Lacuna Coil,although Lacuna Coil's manager is a moron and wouldnt let people take pictures with the band memebers.I wanted my picture taken with Cristina =(.Oh well,I got my pic taken with Marta from Bleeding Through though =].She was nice.

...what can you expect from a worn down man like Ozzy? A great show? When, 20 years ago maybe?! Not now. It's a shame they have no higher standard for what a 'performance' is. They also tried to market off their no talent little girl as a rocker. There are obviously no limits to what they can do, when they go by no standard or requirement that people actually should have something to GIVE when they enter the stage. It's all about past glory and present pretentiousness and a belief, a false belief that anyone can be anything as long as you put money into it and make an effort, talent or no talent. Who in the Osbourne sphere gives a damn about real talent? HAHA Nobody! And that is why they also put SOAD as headliner, a seriously crappy live band, and people get up and leave when SOAD plays Ozzfest this year. The people have spoken....
