Swedish Animal-Rights Organization Slams MAYHEM Over Use Of Animal Parts

Animal Rights Sweden, the country's largest animal-rights organization with 36,000 members, has launched an attack against the organizers of the Gates of Metal festival over Norwegian black metal band MAYHEM's use of animal parts during their performance at the event ( Photo#1, Photo#2), which took place this past weekend (see previous BLABBERMOUTH.NET report). "I think it's very sad that animal parts were used on one of the stages," Animal Rights Sweden chairman Per-Anders Svärd ( photo) told the Swedish newspaper Östran/Nyheterna. "The festival organizer should have put a stop to it. You diminish the value of animal life by doing this. You sacrifice animals and you use them as props in a show for entertainment shock-value purposes. That's the worst part, I think. " MAYHEM obviously wanted to be the most extreme band at the festival. This incident only reaffirms the way society views animals, which is that animals can be used and treated in any fashion. You deny that the animal exists for its own purpose. "A lot of people obviously think that animals are creatures humans have the right to use as they see fit. You disregard the fact that animals actually are individuals with feelings." Per-Anders Svärd emphasizes that there are exceptions. "Dogs and cats get the respect they deserve. What if MAYHEM had brought with them mutilated dog and cat carcasses to Hultsfred [where Gates of Metal was held]? Then every journalist in Sweden would be calling me right now. But now we're talking about pigs and sheep and then it's apparently not as interesting." Per-Anders Svärd believes that pigs, sheep, cows and other mammals should be treated the same way as dogs and cats. "In principle, there is no difference between these animals. Life is probably the same for most mammals." Using animals for experimental purposes and killing a pig and displaying it onstage is, from an ethical standpoint, as bad as eating meat, according to Per-Anders Svärd. "I advocate vegetarianism," he says. Per-Anders also says that he loves hard rock. "I haven't been to Gates of Metal, but maybe I'll go there next year. Then I will bring with me a protest placard so that people can see what my views on bringing dead animals onto a music stage are." Per-Anders Svärd wants promoters to disregard bloody bands like MAYHEM. "Book some vegetarian hardcore bands instead," he says.

It's great to have diverse view points BUT it's even better to understand where someone is coming from. This guy is a vegetarian and to him, killing animals for food is an abhorrent proposition.
On the other hand, it's correct to say that the pig had not been killed by Mayhem or on behalf of Mayhem for the sole purpose of the performance. In fact, what do they do with pigs' heads, they hardly use them.
Cats and dogs are not used as food in this area of the world, therefore it would have been very odd for Mayhem or the festival to have killed a cat or dog for the sole purpose of the performance. I dont believe that would have been acceptable to the band either. Or the festival.
I, personally, dont think that Mayhem or the festival ought to be held responsible for inhuman acts. If anything, the veggies should go after the slaughter houses.
I speak as a lover of animals myself.

I understand how wearing an animal on stage can be a bit extreme. But when they are angry at them for EATING meat, that's when it bothers me. Fuck vegetarians. All they do is bitch and moan about humans eating meat. We have the teeth for it, why not eat it? But, it's not like they use the heads of the pigs anyways. They just burn them or grind them up and use them as fertalizer. Mayhem was just using garbage as stage props basically. I mean, it's not like they slaughtered the pig.

Of course Mayhem wants to be as " evil " as they can. But in my opinion, that was not much. Only bad taste as usual.
If they would have stolen a little girl' s pet cat and killed it on stage, now, THAT would have been an EVIL thing to do. And bad taste too, of course.

hey, typeodude.. back when peter steele was in carnivore, they used butchered animal parts in photo shoots, and supposedly at shows, too. just thought you should know. anyway, mayhem is a good band, but quite overrated.

That shit is too funny.. Seems almost cliche now for something like that to happen in the black metal scene. Atleast it was one of the originals.
Personally, The whole "Evilness" surrounding within the black metal scene is more entertaining than the music itsself.
I'd rather see that than some boring vegan hardcore band preaching on stage or handing out peta panphlets out at their shows.

I've been a vegan for about a year or so, and I really can't bring myself to agree with the Swede or Mayhem. Granted Mayhem most likely didn't kill any animals themselves to use as props, but they should know that it is wrong, no less boring to think that animal parts make for a good show. Per-Anders Svärd has a right to voice his opinion to alert the band, but any sort of legal action should be taken either on the record label or there should be an investigation as to how Mayhem got the parts.
I'm not so much against eating animal products as I am against factory farming. If you are a local farmer, fine. But pumping half dead animals full of hormones and antibiotics, then strapping them to a conveyer belt to be chopped up for distribution isn't natural.
Most likely the animals that were used were factory farmed, there fore should not be used for entertainment.

Yeah, I saw A Headbanger's Journey and I totally agree with you. That scene was also one of the most hilarious parts of the film.
