ALICE IN CHAINS Fans Have Conflicting Emotions About Seeing Band With New Singer
- Aug. 13, 2006
|
|
Robert Morast of South Dakota's Argus Leader reports that ALICE IN CHAINS sold a couple thousand tickets or so in advance for the show Saturday night (August 12) at the Sioux Empire Fair that was to feature COMES WITH THE FALL singer William DuVall with the surviving AIC members — Jerry Cantrell, Mike Inez and Sean Kinney. The support is kind of surprising, considering that, as a rule, rock fans hate change. That's why, even among AIC's thirsty admirers, there's some hesitation to embrace ALICE IN CHAINS 2.0. "I think initially I was a little bit shocked. Seeing them tour without Layne [ Staley] was a little odd at first," says Barry Van Beek, a musician and longtime ALICE IN CHAINS fan from Rock Valley, Iowa. "But now, I think, I've come to terms with it and am pretty excited about it." Van Beek says his acceptance of this new AIC came through reading how guitarist Jerry Cantrell said this tour is so the band can play the songs one more time. Fans appreciate the return. But there still are some conflicting emotions. "I know I'll stand there in awe. I'll also be quite saddened. To hear those songs sung by somebody else will be kind of strange," Van Beek says. It's a common concern. "There have been a few people who have said to me personally, 'it's not the same guy, it's not the same thing,' " says Matt Adamski, director of the Sioux Empire Fair. "But you know, it's still going to be a good show. The core group is there. The music is there." Read more at www.argusleader.com.

They're not going to record any new albums without Layne, so maybe its not much of a problem. Although when I saw that Duvall dude, I thought that he's not the best choice that they could've made. Decent, but not all that great - on the other hand he's not trying to fill Layne's shoes, I think.

Doesnt really matter. Cantrell did nearly half the vocals anyways...and on the unplugged even more.
They didnt play that much back then,so most never saw them with Cantrell anyways.

Saw the new guy back when he was touring with Jerry Cantrell's solo band and he nailed the AIC songs live. One band member dying isn't the end of the world. Sad, but that's no reason for the rest of the band to quit. It's always been pretty much Cantrell's band anyways. Personally, I hope the band continues and they do record new material. Would love to hear more AIC.

I dont think its near the same now but so what, it cool to hear the music i loved 10 years ago. Its not up to them to relive the past or even try to uphold some bullshit legacy. They are musicians that want to play that music again and i appreciate it. If you dont like it, stay away but no reason to bash. Who are we to say if they want to continue to play and make a living with this music.

In my opinion, this should not be looked down on. AIC's music should be celebrated, and considering that three quaters of the band is alive, why not celebrate it........
Of course it will not be the same.....thats acceptable to me. It will be somewhat of an emotional tour for some, but let the music live on......
Put the hatred away!

You losers need to get over your self's. It's not Jerry's fault Layne killed himself and AIC. The reason they never went on a tour for self title was because Layne was fucked up on drugs all the time. Sorry if that sounded harsh, but it's true.

I was at the show and can say William DuVall did a fantastic job. Sure he's not Layne but Brian Johnson is not Bon Scott. I don't hear many peolpe ripping AC/DC. If they make a tour stop in your area I say buy a ticket and check it out. DuVall is doing a great job in my book and I'd love to see them again.

Yeah it's not the same...if they replaced him while he was alive it'd be totally uncool, but now that he's dead, and this is more of a tribute, then I am fine with it. I'd rather them do this than nobody ever tour and play all of their great songs again. Who better than Jerry, Mike, and Sean? I can't wait to check them out when they come to Cleveland in November.

I love Alice in Chains and, I was one of the first people I knew to have "Facelift" back in the day but, I don't see this Duvall guy as having the chops to carry this. I could, personally, sing circles around him and, I'm not just tooting my own horn. It's just the truth. Yeah, I'm a little bitter because I'm not doing anything worthwhile with my voice and, I'm no pretty boy but, I sing my balls off.. Someone mentioned AC/DC carrying on after Bon died. That's true BUT, looking back, that seems like fate. They just happened to find another singer who had "IT," that certain something you can't put your finger on. I don't see this Duvall guy that way. It's like when Blaze Bayley joined Maiden... He wasn't the absolute WORST singer they could have picked but, there were plenty who would have been better. Sorry AIC, I just don't see it...

Before i read a single fuckin post from anyone on here,(with all due respect dudes..)) i wanna say this - LONG FUCKIN LIVE ALICE IN CHAINS AND LONGER FUCKIN LIVE THE MEMORY OF LAYNE STALEY , SHALL THEY ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED FOR SUCH AN AMAZING PIECE OF MUSICAL HISTORY. thier music has such fuckin meaning(and always underlooked) , and was always sooo fuckin deep into the heart and soul of layne staley. Every song it seemed had a bit of layne's story in it. from his addiction , to his failing love with his girlfriend,, who ultimately left him and led to his depression , to seeing his own fucking death in probably at least 10 alice songs. LONG LIVE A - I - C - also , i dont think they were grunge, they and nirvana had each their own sounds , -separately. they were indeed legends. R.I.P. Layne, you arent forgotten brother...

.....Deege gets it......
Singers always get more attention, even if all members are the ones who make the music happen.....No one should ever forget Layne Staley's singing talent, and none of the remaining members should go hide under a rock because Layne's gone, either.....
For all those years they respected Layne's wishes not to tour or do public appearances, now they have the right to do so......& they purposely choose someone nothing like Layne, because Layne's one of a kind, imitators are only going to look stupid up there....
There's a lot to consider when putting a band on the road, and there's alot of issues that goes into picking a bandmember....and ultimately, no matter how much people hate what they do or who they pick to sing ~ they're gonna do it their way, anyway.....

I never said anything about this being just like GnR. It's NOTHING like GnR...all of the original members of GnR are still alive and it's FUCKING LAME Axl is out there touring. Layne DIED, therefore making it impossible for them to use him. Replacing a dead member in a band where they were irreplaceable is a lot more respectable than replacing them just because they don't get along (like Skid Row, GnR, tons of others). Nothing can be done about it in AIC's case and I for one am glad that they are still getting to go out and jam those songs every night. It's better than them doing nothing ever again and being forgotten.

but Jerry, Sean and Mike + William DuVall is better than any band out there today. Playing the songs live helps to keep the songs and Laynes legacy alive, and William DuVall is an amazing singer who can pull it off in his own style.
For some obvious reason alot of the negative comments come from those who hasnt seen Alice In Chains v. 2, and alot of the possitive comment come from those who have. So do yourself a favour and see them live, before trashing the band.

The point I was trying ti make with G n R was when you take take the chemistry or cogs out of the band, they become a cover band, dead or alive. The remaining members should rename and push on after this tribute tour, staley cannot be duplicated.

I'm pretty conflicted as well about this whole thing. Undoubtedly, they always have been and always will be my favorite band. But personally speaking, Layne's voice had an impact on me in my younger days that I couldn't even begin to explain. I was just obsessed with the guy. If I was driving in my car and I heard a Tool song or basically any other non-AIC song, I would sing it in my finest Layne Staley impression. It was truly a sickness. And even just hearing someone speak the words "Alice in Chains" would just excite me knowing that there are other people who may actually feel the same way I do about this band.
I never got to see them play live and I'm really not very interested in seeing this version. I think it would just depress me because to me, Layne Staley WAS Alice in Chains. You can talk all the nonsense you want about AIC being Jerry Cantrell's band, but Layne Staley was without a doubt the biggest part of Alice in Chains. They would have still been a great band if Layne Staley had never been their singer, but Layne took them to a new level of greatness. His voice, his looks, his attitude. Everything about him perfectly mirrored that unique vibe that Alice in Chains had.
But one good thing about "Alice in Chains" touring again is that this will hopefully open up a lot of people's eyes to the music and magic of Alice in Chains. People who weren't too familiar will hopefully go out and pick up the Dirt and Jar of Flies albums in particular and realize what an amazing band they really were.

I did come off as a bit of a douche in my previous post. I apologize. I wish AIC the best... I just know what I could do if I had the chance to sing those songs. I'll be 33 in two weeks and, I've pretty much allowed a very good voice to go to waste here in Columbus, (hell) Ga... nothing to show but a handful of 1st place medals from high school and a rep as a killer cover band/wedding/karaoke singer. Who am I to bash a guy who's off his ass & doing it, right? I did record an mp3 of a little accapella "Nutshell" but, it's taking like 6 years to e-mail with AOL dialup...so..
Anyway, yeah... we'll see.. Can AIC pull it off? Will I ever get out and do anything of worth...? Time will tell... "Like sands through the hourglass... these are the days of our lives..." LOL Pity rant over...
Ehren PS- I'd rather have a semi-AIC than 99% of the others bands around...

With Layne Stanley being dead and all, I'm sorry, but AIC is never going to be the same. Alot of those songs sung by Stanley had personal meaning to him, so now to see them being sung by some other clown just isn't going to cut it. Alice in Chains died when Layne Stanley died, and that should have been the end of it. Didn't Cantrell consider ending Alice in Chains after Stanley died anyway?

you'd have to be retarded to think that it was layne's band. if you would happen to look at the booklets that come with the cd you'd see that about 75% of all songs were written by Cantrell. Cantrell found Layne singin with a bullshit band and pulled him away to start Alice in Chains. IF it was anyones band it was Cantrell's hands down. Cantrell brought in his influencial guitar playing thats ripped off all the time without anyone giving him credit. Layne had his vocals which stood out and for the majority of people that dont play instruments they automatically notice a voice and not guitar playing so natrually people think it was his band. Just because he sings the songs doesnt mean he wrote them either.
