METALLICA: Audio Of Second New Song Posted Online
- Aug. 14, 2006
|
|
A very rough audio recording of METALLICA performing a second new song — tentatively dubbed "The Other New Song" — during their headlining appearance Sunday night (August 13) at the Summer Sonic Festival in Osaka, Japan has been posted online at this location (another low-quality MP3 file can be downloaded here). According to one BLABBERMOUTH.NET visitor ( jason_813) who attended the Tokyo concert on Saturday (where the new track was also performed), the song is "totally different from 'New Song No. 1'. It's about three minutes long and very fast and seems to be based around two searing [ Kirk] Hammett solos. It was a very rough performance, especially from Lars [ Ulrich] but definitely shows promise." As was the case with all the concerts on the band's recent European tour, METALLICA played their entire 1986 album, "Master of Puppets", during the two Japanese shows, including rarely performed tracks such as "Orion" and "Disposable Heroes". "Master of Puppets" came out in the spring of 1986 and was METALLICA's first gold album and mainstream success. It featured staples of the band's live set such as "Battery", "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" and the title track. It was also the last METALLICA album to feature bassist Cliff Burton, who was killed later that year in a tour bus crash. METALLICA's setlist – August 13, 2006 at Summer Sonic Festival in Osaka, Japan: 01. Creeping Death02. Fuel 03. Wherever I May Roam04. For Whom The Bell Tolls05. The Unforgiven06. Battery07. Master of Puppets08. The Thing That Should Not Be09. Welcome Home (Sanitarium) 10. Disposable Heroes11. Leper Messiah12. Orion13. Damage, Inc.- - - - 14. Sad But True15. Nothing Else Matters 16. One 17. Enter Sandman - - - - 18. The Other New Song19. Seek and DestroyMETALLICA is currently writing material for its ninth studio effort, which is tentatively expected in the summer or early fall of 2007. "I think we've realized that the creative process works a little slower for us than it used to, and we're OK with that," METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich recently told BBC Radio 1. "It's not a bad thing, unless, of course, you're waiting for a record." (Thanks: Jacob Brossard)

It sounds like a misfits song to me too, with a few mid-tempo trash breaks "Kill em all" style added. Can't really say I'm that impressed... but it's nice to hear Kirk playing solos again at least.

So what if it sounds Misfits-esque. Thats their roots, their inspiration in the first place. I'm glad they did it, and I'm pretty damn sure they've been wanting to do a song like that for years. They're just having fun out there, and the shit sounds cool and it works for them.

It ruined the whole fucking song. I hate when Hetfield tries to be melodic with his singing..........god it sucks and I wish he would fucking stop it.
I also agree it sounds too happy. The slow part was good and it was also damn good to hear Kirk play some solo's again.

They appear to be heading in the right direction. A mesh of early influences like misfits and diamon head (makes me think of there cover of 'the prince' from D.H.)and the heaviest stuff from the metallica album AND the solos are pure kill'em all . Hopefully Rick Rubin's integrity is rubbing off on them, they lost there way for 15 years, the first new song still had the embarressing vocal melodies but this song is the most they have sounded as metallica in in half my life i really think this is of sign of hope

Another great new song from the masters of metal, they still have it to make thrash/punk, fucking great if you ask me. Load, Reload, Garage inc., S&M were all from the same era and Metallica's mindset. (after the years of nonstop touring in the beginning of the 90's) And they're all great records if you're openminded enough to give it a try. St. Anger was a therapeutic album for them, this was the first album I really disliked, there are a couple of so-so songs on there, but overall not that good. And now, as expected they make another kickass record, the new songs are really showing they're making another very, very good album. And Rubin's isn't all that involved yet, they're still writing. When they're done writing Rubin comes in and starts to make an album with them, imagine what he could do next....

that wasn't thrash or whatever, but it was A HELL of a lot better than anything I've heard come from that camp in a LOOOOONG time. Melody was decent and not all sprinkled with that whole James Hetfield southern "ooooaaaahhh" accent thing that Beatallica and Jim Brewer like to over emphasize when they parody him, and the solos were pretty decently executed for once!!! Yaaaay! That last song, er... the first "new song" however was just a continuation of the St. Anger "we're still trying to figure out whate kind of band we're supposed to be now that we're old and paid a lot for therapy" nonsense. It made me want to fart a lot.

I wouldn't worry too much about these new songs. They are a step up from the last album. Not fantastic, but a step in the right direction. Once Rick Rubin gets involved I expect the songs to improve a lot. He has a great ear for songs and hopefully he'll have metallica on the ball with the songwriting and sound.

Some of you people are in complete denial. I mean I know Metallica has become so big that they don't need to release good music to sell albums. The name does it for them. And the exact opposite goes for Megadeth. They've become uncool, and would need to top Rust in Peace just for anyone to pay attention again. Anyway, on to my point. I think some of you Metallica fans need to admit that if Metallica had released The System Has Failed(with Hetfield's vocals of course) you would have shit your pants. All we would have heard on every post is how this band can't stand up to Metallica because they are the returning kings of metal......Oh, and for you out there that compare the two bands based on album sales. You're not a metalhead. Because no one that was would compare two bands based on how much they sold. Thats what pop fans do. Because I'll tell you this right now Britney Spear's newest outsold the shit out of St. Anger.

One thing though, in response to the first sentence(and only one for that matter) I mean it just didn't seem like a counter point at all. It kind of seems like any 2nd grader could have made the exact same point. You see when I argue I try to validate my point with some kind of substance in the response. just one thing to note... since when has James ever sung well live? Go on check out You Tube... in every single video he has the same "flexible sense of pitch" . His voice sounds massive on every record, but its more than likely due to the amount of time/effort/concentration/and production put into it.
However when you see them live you don't really notice it, cos a.) the crowd is singing every word to every song, b.) the sound of the instruments is so loud.
So i don't think its a case of having lost it, i just don't think he ever had it.

Yeah, it's ridiculous when metalheads bring up album sales. We're supposed to be used to the mainstream not buying into our opinion and listening to bands that don't sell a whole lot of records. But as soon as it's about Metallica you know album sales are going to be brought up(no disrespect to the real Metallica fans out there, I used to be one myself) Oh, and Stygian did you get that name from Iced Earth? I know it's a common enough word in metal, but if so it's another of my favorite metal bands(actually saw them with Megadeth a couple years back) Their last one wasn't one of my favorites but some good songs anyway.

Sounds quite promising - I would like to hear more heavy riffs like that 'slow one' though (that part with notes grouped with pairs) and more triplets mixed with power chords and maybe some black metal tremolo picking ;) I mean Jemes must have been sleeping while playing songs after Justice/Black era with some moments when he opened one eye before playing some saint-angry songs on his dropped f** D guitar. Can't wait to hear new Megadeth and Metallica records

I think they'll get some lyrics,it's almost painfully obvious from this "rough" sounding version they will but who knows depending on what the theme of the song when we get a clearer version (LiveMetallica/Clean Bootleg) we can't tell yet.
Chances are,we'll get some song lyrics and even better yet some more guitar solos where we got the "woah" parts.

Well i see that 8 of every 10 people reacting positive. Can't believe my eyes haha.
I like this song too and.. Metallica hasn't died in 1990. They had a new birth. Much better then al the other bands like Iron maiden who are using the same shit over and over again.
Anyway i hope for a melodic trash metal album with a lot of riffs and solo's. They have show the world that they are doing their own shit. St Anger wasnt made to be commercial. So thats a good thing.
See you in de record store in late 2007 ;)
Metallica forever!

Of Last Caress with the happy sounding tune mixed with The Prince. I agree it sounds more like a cover of a punk song than a metallica song, but I am digging the kill em al ltype solos going down.
