TOOL Opening Act ISIS Say They're Ready To Be Booed By Meatheads
- Aug. 22, 2006
|
|
ISIS frontman Aaron Turner recently spoke to MTV.com about the band's upcoming stint as the support act for TOOL. "You're bound to have a larger meathead contingency in your audience when you open for a band as big as TOOL, and we're very aware of the fact that a good portion of the people at these shows will be bored to tears or perhaps even angry while we're playing," said Turner, who also owns Los Angeles-based Hydra Head Records. "There's also a good chance a lot of 'em won't even be there and will be finding their seats as we're finishing up our set. In one way, we're really excited about it, but in another way, we're realistic about it too. " TOOL are definitely the biggest band we've ever toured with, but I don't feel like it's ultimately going to change things for us that much," he continued. "The hope is that we'll gain some new fans. But there's no delusions that by doing this tour we're going to come out on the other side being a much more popular band. Most smaller bands that open for a bigger band are likely to gain some new fans, but they're just as likely to be heckled off the stage." Read more at MTV.com.

Back in 1991 / 92, not sure, I was going to see a the Boston based band, Extreme @ the old Orpheum. I find out who the opening band was......Alice in Chains....who the fuck...? never heard of them, who is going to see a band called Alice in Chains? that was my response, so, i neglected to see them. Oh how I kick myself for that one. I did get to see Jerry Cantrell at the invite only after the concert and heard him telling someone that they were from Seattle....go figure!

Saw Fantomas open for them in Maine. Think it was me and maybe three other people in the crowd that gave a faq, but it was sweet. Mike Patton trading riffs and rolls with Dave Lombardo. Sweet.

I saw TOOL once live and they were pretty good not amazing but the music is more mellow so I can see how some people won't dig it.
This is the second TOOL concert in TORONTO in this year and they both sold out in a combined like 2 mins. Play an encore show in T DOT!!

...saw Tomahawk open for Tool in two different cities on the Lateralus tour. They got booed for their entire set in Tulsa, OK (which was funny as shit, because Mike Patton just kept egging it on by calling the audience a bunch of redneck assholes), and then I saw 'em again in Houston, and the crowd cheered them on for their whole set (again, funny, 'cause I think Patton was expecting the worst, and he looked surprised that everyone was cheering)!
Go figure.

The worst I remember seeing an opener get booed and pelted was probably when I saw King's X open for AC/DC back in (like everyone else's story) 1991.
Thanks for the Alice in Chains story, I remember stories of them opening for Iggy Pop in the day and his fans absolutely hating them.
Once again, go figure.

I'd be much more excited to see Isis rather than Tool. I saw Isis a few years back and their sound is just enormous. I'm pissed that I waited too long to get tickets to the Mansfield show. And for someone not familiar with Isis, check out their Oceanic and/or Panopticon albums. They play a somewhat similar style as Tool do, but a little heavier and with harsh vocals. Most people with no sense of musical patience will immediately write Isis off after hearing Aaron's voice, but it's too bad because they really are an amazing band.
And I'm surprised I just saw a "Deadboy and the Elephantmen" reference. The demo of If This is Hell, Then I'm Lucky is one of the best albums I own.

I love the fact they are realistic about themselves getting booed. I saw hoobastank open up for VR and they were completely SHOCKED that people booed them.
Then he wrote that song about how Scott didn't talk to him the entire time on tour and their album flopped. Awesome.

Anyway For you strange folks who have never heard them, they are mostly very heavy, somtimes quiet, slow, and atmospheric. Much like Neurosis in a lot of ways, but still have their own sound! Isis is similar to the likes of Black Sabbath at times along with similarities to Mastodon, the Melvins, Neurosis, Cave In, Jesuit, hints of Opeth, Tool, Burst, etc. I hpe Tool won't mind getting blown off stage by Isis on this tour b/c Isis is better than Tool IMO.

Back in 1979 I saw Kiss at the Philadelphia Spectrum. the opening act was a band that was still relatively unknown in the USA. maybe you've heard of them?...Judas Priest! It was amazing. all of these people were there to see the massive Kiss stage show, and fucking Priest comes out on the stage first and just devastates the whole arena. they were so loud and so powerful that, even with all of Kiss's effects, they seemed tame by comparison.

not to talk about anyone's music, but the music business. In the past 10 - 15 years the M.O. seems to be to mismatch bands on a tour lineup in the hope of selling tickets to two sets of fans. I can remember when this all got started; Korn used to open for every metal band under the sun, and it was amusing to watch the crowd changing shifts like employees at an amusement park. I guess that's one reason I haven't been to a large theater or arena concert in many years; along with overcharging and having to many weak songs to play, my old favs never seem to have support bands I might like. If its gonna be so bad, you should have passed Isis.

Well, I picked up Isis's Panopticon on the recommendation of a friend of mine, and I was impressed by the composition, but not so much the arrangement or the mixing. The music seems to have a lot of motion to it, but the recording seemed dull and lifeless. It's not as good as it could have been.
As it was, I got quite bored by the album. I don't doubt that they're tremendous musicians, and I'm hoping that their live performance will be much better when I see them in Minneapolis next month. If it is, I might go and buy another of their albums, to give them another chance.
As far as "Tool fans" go, I think the ones that give the rest a bad name are the same ones that give any other band's fans a bad name: the drunken, stoned fuckheads that can't seem to respect the other people that are there to see the same band they are... or the ones that are there for an excuse to drink beer, fondle women, and see how many noses they can break in a mosh pit. You'll find them at any concert. It's just that they seem to stick out more at a Tool show.

Tool is an extremely talented band, and extremely talented bands aren't afraid to take other extremely talented bands out on the road with them.
I have tix to this Sunday's show at the Gorge in George and I will definitely not be booing Isis. "Oceanic" is a fucking incredible album, and I'm lucky to get to see two great bands on the stage on one night.
Funny, but someone above mentioned missing Alice in Chains in '91. I did the exact same thing the exact same year. The 'Clash of the Titans' tour had come to Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque, NM. It was Megadeth, Anthrax and Slayer. (Slayer killed, btw.) Anyway, the opener that night was, you guessed it, Alice in Chains. I blew them off in order to find some doses outside the stadium, which I did find, btw. but oh silly me...

Tool is a cool band, but if I was to go to this tour (which I'm not) I'd be more excited about seeing Isis than Tool.
Tool puts on a good live show, but I think their latest album was pretty lackluster. I love Isis and I can't wait to see them live, but I'll wait for a smaller show.
And metalheads booing them off stage? Tool attracts a fairly mainstream crowd these days. It would be duchebags booing them off, not metalheads. The last show I went to was all Unique Leader bands (brutal death metal), I'm a metalhead through and through and I love Isis!

On the whole subject about who opened for whom, back in the day... I remember reading an interview with Downer a few years ago... If any of you can't remember Downer; they were signed to Roadrunner and released one album... They played some kind of post-grunge...
Well… Their first gig ever, was at a pizza-place. There where about 20 people (Correct me, if I’m wrong)... Who opened for Downer? Korn and The Offspring!?

Sadly enough, because I'm a HUGE Isis fan, they'll probably not get much more recognition out of it than most opening bands. It comes down to the fact that Isis is a bit of a niche band. Tool, for some reason, has managed to carve out a giant cult following...and while Isis is a bit similar to them, they're more of an aquired taste.
Can't wait to see them, though. Tool is always mesmerizing live, and I really enjoy Isis' material, so I'm surely looking forward to it.

props to golgatha, opethfan689,astral zombie, distemper, shapechanger, for you comments and your ability to bring thought and logic into the lifes of these musicaly challenged children..anyway im only 14 and im going to see Tool at the gorge in washington in 2 days and quite frankly now that i hear all the fuss i do kinda want to see isus. But i completely disagree about Tool giving dull performances. In my opinion they (Tool) got ahead of all these degenerate, cloned, mass-produced, heavy metal bands by simply making they're music harmonious. Tool is one of my favorite bands hands down, but im not a methhead or a deathmental slave, hell i listen to gnarles barkley, audioslave, soundgarden, rage against the machine, alice in chains, nine inch nails, the killers, live, pearljam, snoop dog, 2-pac, lyrics born baby, frank sinatra and tons of others...i even have two mp3 players a zen vision:m 30 gb and an apple ipod 30 gb because one wont hold all my music...sad i know...im also a starting musician, with my band civilian. and as far as small opening bands go, right after rage against the machine and soundgarden split up i saw audioslave (chris cornell from sound garden and tom morello, tim commerford and brad wilk from rage against the machine) open up for tool in seattle and now, in my opinion are one of the best and most influential bands out there and they dont sound anything like Tool, so relax all you heavy metal guys, stop dogging other bands and just experiment and test which ones you like and only talk about them, compliment them and voice you opinion about them, trust me its much more interesting to read then "Tool is gay and Isus is fucking awsome"...trust me.
