STRYPER Singer Wanted To 'Reach Out' To SLAYER Fans At Mexico Festival

STRYPER frontman Michael Sweet has commented on SLAYER's decision to cancel their previously announced appearance at the third edition of the Monterrey Metal Fest, which was to take place Saturday, September 23, 2006 at the Coca Cola Auditorium in the city of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. SLAYER, who were scheduled to co-headline the event with STRYPER, cited "personal reasons" as the cause of the cancellation.
Commented Sweet: "We found out a few days ago that SLAYER pulled out of the Mexico festival. According to the promoter, it was due to the fact that STRYPER was on the bill. We only decided to take the show when we found out that SLAYER was on the bill. We've always wanted to do a show/tour with SLAYER in order to reach out to their fans/followers but since they cancelled, we have decided to shoot a new video to the song 'Passion'. It will be shot in Nashville on the 22nd, 23rd and 24th of September. A video is long overdue and since SLAYER is no longer in the line-up, the video shoot is our #1 priority."
As a result of SLAYER's cancellation, this year's Monterrey Metal Fest has been pushed back to November 18. All second-stage bands — REIGN OF TERROR, BLUDGEON, HYDROGYN, BENEDICTUM, DREAMS OF DAMNATION and JADED — are still confirmed for the festival and additional information will be provided in the coming days.

As unlikely as I thought I'd ever say this, I love the new Stryper CD. Everything that I used to hate about them (the mile-high vocals, the wussy songs) are gone. Even their image is cooler. Stryper are not for everybody, obviously, but you gotta respect them for coming back and sticking to their ideals. It's no different than respecting Slayer for the same thing. They could have wussed out like many other thrash bands (won't mention the names) but they have stuck to their musical and lyrical directions. In a sense, Stryper and Slayer have that in common, and I respect both bands.

according to people near the festival staff, SLAYER didn´t want STRYPER on the bill and the manager demanded the control and approval of which bands were included on the main stage.
Being 95% of the bill confirmed and contract agreements signed, SLAYER quitted and booked a gig in Mexico city the same day.

So Slayer pull out because they dont want to play with Stryper. You'd think after all these years they'd show alittle more maturity than that.
Why cant they simply put their differences aside for one night and let their music do the talking. Stryper are prepared to do so but obviously Slayer are not.
Many people may hate Stryper but the reality is they're hot live. Ye Ye bitch and moan about the message/lyrics all you like but once you look past that this is a band that can really play. A band fronted by one of the best live vocalists in rock.. that being Michael Sweet.
With both co-headlining there were obviously going to be comparisons and imagine the reaction to the following headline. "Stryper blows Slayer off the stage". That would put an end to Slayer as we know it LOL.
Put simply Stryper were up to the challenge and Slayer were not.
