IRON MAIDEN Singer: 'We Have No Interest In Hitting Dozens Of Cities In America'
- Aug. 25, 2006
|
|
IRON MAIDEN frontman Bruce Dickinson recently spoke to MTV.com about the making of the band's new album, "A Matter of Life and Death", due on September 5 via Sanctuary. "We did the whole thing in just a shade under four months," said Dickinson. "We don't get together to make records that much anymore, so when we finally did, we were really excited, and that excitement turned into this really productive period." The band started writing in late 2005, and right away the machine clicked. There was a complete absence of the types of arguments that used to hamstring the bandmembers. "In the past we may have been a bit more uptight, but we're all just seriously relaxed and chill about things now, so we're able to work well together and not get worked up," Dickinson said. "Ideas were just buzzing through the air, and everybody was listening to each other and feeding off the energy." The band, whose last U.S. jaunt was a controversial stint on the 2005 Ozzfest, will launch a comparatively brief North American tour that begins on October 4 in Hartford, Connecticut, and winds down October 21 in Irvine, California. Then the band will launch a lengthy European tour and may not return to North America before its next album. "We have no interest in hitting dozens of cities in America, because let's be honest — there probably aren't enough IRON MAIDEN fans to justify an extensive tour on the scale we like to play," Dickinson said. "Do we think IRON MAIDEN could sell out a 20,000-seat arena in Iowa? Probably not. So we'll do these big shows on our terms indoors and then see what happens with the record." Read more at MTV.com.

for you, BRUCE, to say you couldnt sell out so you wont come pretty much makes you a sell out. all those people have been buying maiden records for years, traveling 100's of miles to hear maiden, and you disrespect them?

Maiden will never see another dime of mine. Same rule as Gene Simmons. I only spend my hard earned scratch on bands that appreciate it and understand where it comes from.

Once again Bruce Dickinson shows his distain for American audiences. Obviously he could give a shit about fans who have supported Maiden for years in states like "Iowa". I have been a loyal fan of Maiden since their inception. Sad to say that I will no longer buy any of their new cds. Not to worry Bruce, You won't have to come to my neck of the woods because I wouldn't buy a ticket to see your lame ass anyway. Just goes to show it is all about the money for these blokes. And people talk about Gene Simmons. Give me a break!! Fuck you and the rest of Maiden.

You guys don't understand economics.
Big production = Big Bucks
Small crowd = Small Bucks.
Maiden sells out 50k seaters in Europe in record time. Why should Maiden reduce their standards and lose money to make a few of us happy? Why is band great on one side on the ocean, and little more than an * on the other. Is this NOT a great band? Fuck yeah it is! If your market :Ie if your metalheads and Peers support Maiden they would be there . I'm not going to get to see this tour as the rest of the people in my city would rather sell out the dome for Hillary Duff. Yet on the other sids of my country Maiden has a fan base that is just that, fanatical. If you ever get a chance to see a Maiden show in Quebec. GO! you will see what I mean. True appreciation BOTH WAYS
Just because you buy Maiden albums and shirts does not give you the god given right to say "play my town" ....while you are doing your part, the rest of the demographic has moved on or is listening to something else.
Great bands should not be taken for granted.

its pretty sad when maiden does exactly what bruce bitches about on how corperate america is. we can all see they have no respect for the fans and are only interested in money. most bands will play to all the us markets even if it means they scale it down a bit and play a 1500 seat club. they dont care if they only make a few thousand to several thousand that night . its about the fans, the ones that allowed them to have their lifestyle. i can see if your somebody like saxon that only do some cities because they really struggle here. and as far as the stage you send it to the next town. what a bunch of bullshit !! i remember bruce bitching awhile back bitching about the fans here not being crazy enough either. well i'm almost 40 years old and am not gonna scream and jump up and down and bang my head anymore. i'm still enjoying the show though, i'm still buying the cd though. its a different element over seas. they play huge festivals outside with a bunch of young drunk kids how do you expect they are going to act ? i did too back when, it dosent mean i like them any less because i'm just standing there watching the band. bruce needs to shut his hypocritical face.

The Quad Cities.... hmm.. Jazz Festival, Blues Festival, Reggae Festival, Zydeco Festival...not sure if I've seen any thriving underground scenes lately. Maybe a handful of bands doing originals. C'mon..."Lumpy's" doesn't constitute an underground scene. Face it...it's lame here.

Check it out:
Killers - gold The Number of the Beast - platinum Piece of Mind - platinum Powerslave - platinum Live After Death - platinum Somewhere in Time - platinum Seventh Son of a Seventh Son - gold No Prayer for the Dying - gold
And I'm not even listing the myriad of videos that have gone gold or higher. "Visions of the Beast" is double-platinum in North America.
I bet that if Bruce hadn't left Maiden, they'd still be just as huge in America as they were 20 years ago. Blaze Bayley just killed the band though, and to be brutally honest, the albums Maiden has put out since Bruce and Adrian returned just are not as good as 80's-era Maiden (in my opinion, anyway).
Oh well. I am a very thick-skinned person though and I'll still be buying the new Maiden album next month. Iron Maiden is one of this American's all-time favorite bands.

Maiden always have a huge stage set and like to put on big shows. Check the tour dates on the official page...nearly all the European dates sold out almost immediately, none of the American ones have. They`ve got to the point where they`re not too bothered by popularity in the States anymore, they`re doing just fine in Europe ( where the population is bigger than the States anyhow ), Japan and South America. Once you`ve made it in life you don`t have to do things you don`t want to and touring all over the States to play small clubs probably doesn`t appeal anymore.

I love Maiden and have for 23 years now but that's just fucked up about the US tour. Considering that most of the bands that do tour the States these days are fucking shit, Maiden would be an absolute treat to see. I'm sorry though, they're not to big to play 5,000 to 8,000 seat arenas and even smaller than that. I would love to see them in a smaller more intimate venue. They don't need to huge stage production, they music is what sells Maiden to me,not the props on stage. I would like to let Bruce know that there are thousands of Maiden fans here in the States and all though it's nothing like the craze the rest of the world has with them, they are popular here. Not every place they play has to be Madison Sqare Garden. They should give their fans a break and give them a chanc to see them. I know I would appreciate it.

I think he made a completely fair point - they are waiting to see if the demand is there first. Interesting to see the Americans moaning on here when they are visiting you lot before us Brits! And as Sontaron said - the demand is greater in Europe in terms of figures - you can't argue with the facts.

First off, Bruce needs to tone it down in regards to the FANS. The FANS are what got you to where you are today. The FANS helped make your career in the 80's here in the States. Don't forget where you recorded Live After Death. That's right, in the USA. Don't forget that a lot of your bread and butter came from our pockets.
You may not like corporate America(a lot of people don't), or the way our music industry is here. But to flat out bust on the American FANS is wrong. Yea Bruce, it's not the 80's anymore, or we might not have the Europe vibe going on, but Maiden has plenty of FANS here in the US.
Don't forget how many FANS here in the States overpaid last year to see you on Ozzfest. The only reason I went, as well as monay others. And don't forget how the FANS here stood up for you after the egg incident.
I love Maiden, and Bruce's solo stuff, but enough bashing on the FANS here in the States. Don't fucking release records here anymore, or tour if that is the attitude you're going to have.
REMEMBER THIS: One reason why Maiden is so big in Europe now, is because of the success they had in the US. The mark of a European band, is gauged by the success they have here in the States. If they make it in the US, then they make it anywhere.

There is a huge difference though between metal fans here in the States, and in Europe. Every band must realize that. Our corporate America lifestyles have really driven music into the ground, unlike Europe.

No it isn`t. Stop having such a sense of self importance. Maiden were certainly already huge in the UK before they hit the big time in the States.
And what of bands like Manowar, Blind Guardian etc. who are enormous in Europe but couldn`t sell out a small club in the States? By your reckoning how come Manowar have sold 8 million albums without breaking the States?

I love Maiden, but maybe Bruce deserved to get egged for this kind of shit, the rest of the band however did not deserve it! Maiden have of been shitting on their American fans the past few years. What's up w/ only playing 80 mins when you headline here in the States but playing at least 2 hours for your European fans. We American Maiden fans don't deserve less just because there may not be as many of us here as in Europe.

but hes a bit of a smugy cocky europeany long-winder. whatever happened to the 'book it an they will come mentality' Also what ever happened to smaller arenas where its a bit more intimate. what you cant play to 8000 instead of 20000? or would that be a little bit of an insult to the mighty maiden. I am a huge maiden fan, but dissing this country because its different from europe is a bit whiny and elitist. I agree eliteness is a cool thing at times but at the same time a little humbleness can go a lot further. I bet if they play a couple of smaller venues it would incite more people to go because its a chance to be closer and see better. Anyway....

I've been getting my teeth kick in over the last several years every time I speak my thoughts on Dickheadson. I agree with him totally that corporate American thumbs there nose at old school metal, but the son of a bitch complains about it to his fans at shows. Also the fucking bastard even mocked his fans for not singing loud enough. He actually got pissed at us for doing our best to sing along. What other band in metal history has done that? The guy has lost it! Fuck him. However it doesn't make me hate Iron Maiden. They are living legends and I disagree with everyone who says they lost it when Bruce left the band. Harris makes Maiden great! Which is why I absolutely love Virtual XI. Enough said.

"Because there are 8 million idiots everywhere else buying Manowar albums."
Well...yes, that was kind of my point! Thanks for clarifying it! You ( or whoever the original poster was ) said Maiden and any other band can only succeed in the rest of the world if they conquer America. Which is nonsense. Manowar, as you`ve just said, have proven it. As have countless other bands. There are 6 billion people in the world and only 270 million of them live in America. That`s an awful lot of sales to go after!

I think everyone is getting excited over nothing here. Bruce hasn`t come out and said all Americans are dicks - he wouldn`t play there at all if he didn`t like you! Basically he`s said that metal isn`t very big there nowadays and they`ve reached the time and point of their lives where they don`t want to leave their families for months on end to drag their asses around America playing small dates. Who here would do something they didn`t want to if they were millionaires? Maiden have no need to go after the American market anymore as their isn`t really an Amercian metal market left. They`ve nothing to prove and will play where they`re wanted and to size crowds they enjoy.

He complained about “people with mullets stuck in the 80’s” who do not buy the new Maiden albums. Hey Bruce look at your old pictures. You needed to shape up that ugly bowl haircut!! and growing stronger. I will be there first to admit that many American metal bands tend to be trendy and suck ass, but at least it is still growing. Also, there seems to be a increasing trend of American metal fans finally turning on to European metal.
I grew up on Maiden, but I'm sick of this dickhead's rants about American audiences to the press and during concerts.
As an American living in a capitalist society I realize my only "vote" in such situations is with the dollar. I cannot support Maiden this time; I will not buy this album. I will download or copy it. I encourage all Americans who feel the same to do the same.
Sorry Mr. Harris, but your brilliant but terribly arrogant singer has cost you another....

Why go play Greensboro, NC or Bum Fuck Egypt...the place be 1/2 full. The cost of fuel...insurance and etc....would make the ticket prices $50 - $75....most people wouldn't pay that.....so just because you love Maiden, you think they should lose money on a tour???
Come on guys, Maiden deserve more respect than some of the bashing you guys are giving them. Be realistic!

Hard to believe Bruce doesn't think Maiden could fill a stadium in Atlanta or Charlotte or Jacksonville. Hell, KISS all but sold out a 10,000 seat venue in Charleston. Fucking KISS.
I've read comments from Bruce about the US "culture" before, and sometimes agreed wholeheartedly. But he is clearly telling Maiden fans in the US to fuck off.
I'll hear those comments from him about the US everytime I hear a Maiden song now.

The Haunted dude above made a great point.
Both bands are generally considered old-school classic metal and have about the same media exposure in the US. They have mostly the same fan base. Judas Priest toured the US last year extensively with great success. The audience is there. Lame excuse.
I believe now the ages-old debate about which is the greater of the two can finally be put to rest, at least as far as many Americans are concerned. As Bruce stated himself, in America "there probably aren't enough IRON MAIDEN fans to justify an extensive tour."

I recently saw Nicko McBrain here in Florida at a small club perfoming with his Iron Maiden "Tribute Band". I thought for sure the place would be PACKED. Especially since Maiden hasn't played Florida since 1985. There were about 50-60 people IF THAT. I've seen local suck ass bands bring in more than that. There are not many places left in the US that really support metal. I supposed Maiden are not as relevant in the US anymore.

And yes he has been kind of an asshole lately, but I've never been one to get caught up in a bands personal views. I do agree that sometimes have to accept not making as much money to pay back fans that have put you where you are today. The person who showed off their sales brought up a good point. America is one of the reasons you are where you are so how about a little respect our way too. Don't get me wrong the entertainment industry in America is a joke. We only like foreign art if it's the "trendy, import of the year" style that come here every couple of years. Then we rant about it for a month or so and forget all about it as soon as the hype is over. Also, I hear it all the time on this site. "what's up with how long and drawn out the songs are" It's because they're building towards something. I mean for the most part bands anymore consider playing the same riff 4 times as a build. I don't mind giving up a little flash for substance. The new album sounds great, and I can't wait to see them in Chicago!

It's true what I've been hearing about there being a market in San Francisco. I went on vacation there recently and wore a Maiden shirt....you would have thought I was visiting royalty. 15 people must have commented on the shirt. I went to two bars, one in San Francisco, and the other is a kick ass bar in Santa Cruz called the Poet and the Patriot where they had tons of Maiden on the jukebox. I think the one in San Fran was called.. The Crowbar.....or something like that. Anyway I spent about $20 on playing Maiden on the jukebox and the bartender at the Poet and the Patriot was totally rocking out with us. I think that is definitely a market they're missing. But a whole U.S. tour would probably resemble the movie Spinal Tap to much...

He is right though. The recent Maiden material doesnt hit home with the main metal base in America. Judas Priest can still write an album, and every metal/hard rock fan can love it. But Maiden has become more progressive. But as i write this, i realise that Dream Theatre still does big tours in America, and sell out shows. So yea...
But i have payed $75.82 for my 6th row floor seats in Toronto, and would gladly do it again.

It's a gay thing to say but the really pathetic thing is that America has gotten so lame that he actually SAID IT. This country has become a pansified version of what it was 20-30 years ago. Look at the absolute crap that most people listen to now. If they aren't into rap and pop, they're into crap like Chimaira, Glass Casket, Black Dahlia Murder, Lamb Of God and other irrelevant core shit. I hate the fact that Dickinson just kicked America in the teeth with what he said, but do you really blame him with what happened last year at Ozzfest? Do you really blame him with how metal-less this country has become? It's pathetic that America has gotten so gay that the bands that used to tour here either won't do it anymore, or will only do it briefly because they feel there's no one left.

As much as Bruce rails against "corporate America" he is showing what a big hypocrite he is. I have seen all the arguments here and I am sorry, but this is an ego thing... HIS HUGE EGO. WHich all of you have had plenty of time to recognize by now. Maybe some of you that were so willing to jump on Sharon Ozbourne will now realize that this was a two way street, with both groups equally at fault. Dickinson badmouths Ozzy on HIS stage during the tour, Sharon retaliates with eggs at ONE show. Both were at fault.
How many US bands have small showings in the US but are huge overseas? Should all of them just quit touring the US and go where the money is? The fact is that bands tour because of the fans and they tour wherever they are. Just because Maiden doesnt sell out 30000 seat stadiums here in the US they have a shitload of fans that have bought all their albums and reissues, and repackages and DVD's and merchadise, and for that, they owe them. If they have a big production that can't be supported over here it is a simple matter to scale it down.
I am a huge Maiden fan, but I am not going to defend the indefensable, and the rest of you should open your eyes as well.

90% of us do not just go with the flow. We have opinions. Bruce obviously does too, however, preaching for as long as he does during a show is not the appropriate venue. I've experienced his self-righteous ramblings at some recent shows and it's pretty unsavory. As for playing 20,000 seat arenas, in the 80's they played 3k to 5k seat arenas, which they made enough money to fill their coffers and please the fans.
The bottom line is Bruce is a dick and he doesn't care about his fans, American or otherwise, as long as they feed his wallet and his ego. To prove this all you have to do is look at the recent band photo of Maiden in Kerrang. What's the first thing you notice? That's right, he's wearing a fucking Hawaiian Luau shirt. Everyone is making a statement of metal except him. Come on! That's a shirt you wear at a Jimmy Buffet concert not something you wear when you're trying to show the world you are metal royalty. I can almost hear him say, 'I can show up at a photo shoot in a bathrobe and the other guys won't say shit otherwise I'll threaten to quit'. He's snubbing his nose at the band and his fans.
Take off your Bruce beer goggles! If some one asked you who from Maiden you’d like to sit down with have a beer with at the pub, the last person you’d pick would be Bruce. He is kind of person that would be looking around you, or over you, or pretend he’s listening while he’s looking at his watch.
I love Maiden but I hate Bruce. Luckily for them one man does not a band make.

What do you mean by "Iron maiden is abandoning their fans"? Doesn't it make sense that they play in the places where they have MOST fans? They would probably have a bigger crowd is they played in f**ing Thailand than they would playing a medium size city in the states. Still they have kept touring in the US! It's about time that they play places where people actually come to see them. Over here in Stockholm they have sold out all three dates in the city's biggest arena. They could sell out three more dates only here in Stockholm but they choose to play in other places as well. Consider yourself lucky to be able to see them in the US at all. I have travelled to Japan to see my favorite band (Accept) and I didn't bitch about it.
