Ex-DAVID LEE ROTH Guitarist JASON BECKER Needs Your Help
- Aug. 27, 2006
|
|
Guitarist Jason Becker's ( DAVID LEE ROTH, CACOPHONY) official web site is offering t-shirts for a limited time only, priced at $15 (including shipping). All proceeds go straight to Jason, who is suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS, a.k.a. Lou Gehrig's Disease). When doctors diagnosed Becker with ALS in 1989 — one week after he joined David Lee Roth's band as Steve Vai's replacement — they gave him approximately five years to live. That was 17 years ago. Though Becker was able to complete Roth's album ( "A Little Ain't Enough"), in the ensuing years the guitarist would be robbed of his mobility, forcing him to communicate through an "alphabet board" his father invented. The one-time promising young gun now chooses each letter of his speech via eye movements.

Jason is a class guitarist & totally underrated. It's a shame he can no longer play guitar anymore as I'm sure if he could still reocrd, he'd kick the ass of many other guitarists out there with the greatest of ease.
I look forward to wearing that shirt, as I never thought I'd see one printed of my fave guitarist...

Guy was an amazing guitarist, had it not been for ALS this guy would be in the same league as Clapton, Vai and Rhoades. Some people would already consider him a part of that group.

I am not going to buy it. There are people/children suffering all over the world. I took a tour of a children's cancer hospital the other day while doing reasearch for my project, and it was heartbreaking seeing these little kids with a death sentence. Just because you were a guitarist does not mean you are more entittled to people's help than anyone else. I would rather my money go on these poor children.

I understand your point of view, but I'd like to point out that these t-shirts were made for Jason's fans because there was a demand for them. I'm sure there are plenty of fans who'd love a t-shirt of Jason regardless of where the money is going. I personally think it was a nice gesture for the company to donate the proceeds directly to Jason, when they could just have pocketed the money themselves. If you don't want one... don't buy one. No one is forcing you...

Becker is the most Genuine human-being/musician ever.
I live near him out here in Richmond California. Met him right before all this happened and still know him now-
I have a father who has Multiple Sclerosis.... which has similar syptoms but quite different still.
Jason truly LOVES music and all that is spiritual and is MUSIC. A true Musician. He should be a good example for people complaining they cannot do anything. The guy still writes music with eye movements and the help of his family and friends- Pushing onward no matter what.
For the ones who make stupid comments on his condition etc.
Karma...that's all I gotta say. Karma- say or do stupid shit. It's coming righ back at ya'.

Not to be a total asshat or whatever but we have ALL lost very close personal friends and family members and the day will come when we're all dead too.
Yes it's true that some people have a tougher run of life than others and that's unfortunate, in fact - it sucks ass. At least this guy had SOME shot. There are kids with diseases who are disabled and dying every hour of every day. Kids get NO shot, they don't get to do albums, they don't get to hang out with celebrities, they don't have T-shirts to sell.
In the grand scheme of things, before he was showing signs of this disease this guy probably had a better life than many of the people who post here, both on this end and those doing CD & DVD reviews for the site.
I have nothing against Jason Becker or anyone suffering from anything - I just think it sucks even worse for those suffering WITHOUT fame on their side to help aide their suffering.
If you are a person who is considering spending $15 on a shirt for this guy, please at least consider sending an additional $15 to SOME charity where the non-famous are suffering without t-shirts to sell.
Normal people matter too.

....well said. Eating at the nerve, yeah, you're right, I'm sure you're experience was heart-wrenching, no doubt. And, no, just because he's a guitarist does not make him MORE worthy...but consider where you are posting: a FORUM for music. There's an outreach for support here because of that.

"Just because you were a guitarist does not mean you are more entittled to people's help than anyone else."
Yeah, and just because you're a little kid does not mean you're entitled to more help. Double standard much? Nobody's ENTITLED to help from anyone. They get it from the very few generous and worthwhile people left in the world. If anything, he deserves it more because he doesn't have an entire fucking charity on his side. And, if you want to get right down to it, he's actually selling a product, not just sitting there asking for a handout.
"At least this guy had SOME shot. There are kids with diseases who are disabled and dying every hour of every day. Kids get NO shot, they don't get to do albums, they don't get to hang out with celebrities, they don't have T-shirts to sell."
That's absolute bullshit. Nine out of ten people aren't going to know who in the world Jason Becker is. Meanwhile, children with all sorts of problems have thousands of charities and millions of dollars to help them out. What charities earn more money than charities for kids? All Jason Becker has is t-shirts to sell to a handful of people who folllow heavy metal.

There's a million & one charities out there - but as far as I know, there's very few for ALS. Also, the few charities for ALS is purely for research - not for helping keep those who suffer from it alive. It has to be stupendously expensive trying to pay for round the clock care 24/7. Most people have never heard of Lou Gehrig's Disease when you ask them!!!
Jason may have 'had a shot at being a rock star' - but when it comes down to it, how long do you REALLY think those album royalties will last when you have to pay 10 afterlife worth of Medical Bills to pay - YESTERDAY???
The reality is, Jason IS just a normal person & a lot of people out there want to help him as much as possible out of respect for who he is - whether it be a family member, friend, fan, or just someone who can relate to what has happened to him & cares enough to go that extra bit further than most for a fellow human.
At the end of the day, if you're a fan of Jason Becker, you will know the score & know that as well as buying a t-shirt, you will be directly doing something positive for those dedicated to help support him.
I've already pledged my allegiance, and I hope many more follow...

Holy Crap what idiots! To read the imbecile spew that come out of some of you losers is incredible. Most health insurances are profit so the government has no hand in it...to this day there is NOT ONE piece of proof that stem cells cure anything, they are so far from research in that field that cures from stem cell (if there is at all) are 20 years away...Turning a story about a man with a horrible disease into a political argument has to be the weakest thing...ALS is a horrible disease which is fatal...Jason is lucky to have survived as long as he has, but the disease is crippling...Do you think he would be asking for money if he had millions? And what could he possibly do with the money for personal use if he didn't use it for his care. HE IS IMMOBILE. I just hope your youth makes you people stupid post

You haters, had better research this guy and check out how FUCKING AMAZING a guitar player he was when he was not ill. There are some insane videos out there of him burning up that fretboard at such an early age. Geeez what power...
I wish him the best. What a shame he has to suffer when jerks like fred durst should have that condition instead but fred walks around thinking he is a talent.
